What a gem. A must stop in the Catskills. Located close to Kaaterskill Falls in Palenville. An adorable general store with a mix of local goods and traditional. Fantastic counter that does breakfast and lunch. They use bread from Bread Alone. It's fantastic. Had such a great experience, I came back the next day. Some outdoor seating. The outdoor spots are dog friendly. Some local craft beers and ciders for purchase. The bacon egg and cheese on a roll is the best I've ever had. The roll was light and fluffy with a somehow crispy but soft crust (it's not hard - it just has a texture to the crust). The egg was perfectly cooked. The cheese melted inside so nicely. Good coffees both hot and iced. Non dairy milks and flavored syrups available. The food and drinks are reasonably priced. A great gem of a store. read more

I was told by a friend that we MUST stop here for sandwiches on a recent trip to Tannersville, and man was he right. They have an extensive menu with tons of options (including vegetarian choices!) and are reasonably priced. I went for their pesto caprese sandwich and it was incredibly good. I think i had one of the best sandwiches... was visiting town and saw this spot. Upon returning i stopped. The place is humble and honest. Everyone was sweet. Got 2 sandwiches... Turkey with pickle red cabbage, cheese and roast beef with gouda... first of all i never imagined a pickled sweet red cabbage would match so well.. it was a revelation.. i know its simple but wow. Also roast beef was on spot.. i've had good stuff but this was awesome.. bread on spot. The entire process and experience was phenom btw beautiful place. First of all, I want to say that the sandwiches are delicious. That being said, we encountered a few unpleasant snags concerning our bill. Our sandwiches were $11 and $12 according to the menu. However,we were charged $13 for each one. When we asked a staff person about it, they just said it was an "old menu." It would have been nice if they told us prior to ordering. They also double charged us for one of our drinks and gave us a refund without a problem. There are no restrooms of any kind on the premises. When I asked, they told me I could use the one at the Mobile station or Dollar General a short walk away. I discovered that the Mobile station did not have one. We felt they demonstrated an overall lack of consideration for their customers. read more

These guys will though, so I'll pay $13-15 plus tip for some meat on bread and be thrilled to do so because I have consistently, every single time, had a better experience here than most restaraunts. We stopped here twice for breakfast during our recent trip to the Catskill State Park and the falls. It is so close to the park which made it ideal for us. Breakfast is served till 11:30a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. The inside part of the restaurant was not open due to the pandemic, but one could order there or call ahead. There is some seating outside to maintain social distancing. We had egg sandwiches both days, and love that they use local and free range eggs. Everything tasted fresh and delicious. Great Greek salad! Food is usually on point and consistent. Our sandwich that was supposed to be hot was really cold-just crispy on the outside. I understand everyone is understaffed but we just ate it cold because we would have had to wait again. Not a fan a cold caramelized onions:(. I live in Palenville and The Circle W is basically a gift from the gods. They have great coffee, great sandwiches, nice people working there. Where it gets weird is that there are a lot of people who are from out of town stopping there because it does provide something of a New Yorky vibe and is priced something like a New Yorky price. That being said, as a bit of advice to the out of towner...if you are bringing your urban expectations of speed or 'service' or whatever, just remember, you are in a small town in the country. You probably came here to get away from your urban life for a minute, to enjoy the pace of life...so, try to put aside your expectations and just go with the flow. As someone who has commuted back and forth between New York and the country for many years, I will attest that the city energy is tough to 'wash off'. It stays with you. Be aware of your angst that you are bringing...it's ok! It happens. It's a lot. Take a nice couple of breaths and take in the country air, put in your order and if there's a lot of people waiting...go take a little walk. It might take some time, but it's worth it. If you don't want to wait...particularly on the weekend when it can be really slammed, go get something at burger king in Saugerties or maybe go hit the diner up in Tannersville if that's where you're headed. Also, for those of you inclined to sit outside and talk into or listen to something on speakerphone. Just dont. That's not something anyone should be doing anywhere. you have headphones. Put them in. If you don't, then don't terrorize the rest of us with your bullshit. We're just here at Circle W to sit outside like Rip Van Winkle and enjoy that beauty of the day. So come, enjoy, relax and if things take a while, roll with it. That's how we do in the Catskills. Maybe it will help you to confront your stress a bit. 'Why am I so anxious to get this sandwich?' may cross your mind if you care to be a bit self-aware. 'That's weird. I really don't have anywhere important to go and yet I'm freaking out about how a sandwich takes half an hour. Do I not have half an hour to kill?' Enjoy the existential crisis of not receiving your sandwich immediately. Perhaps feel what it's like to be on the other side of the sandwich making process in this small store / restaurant that for the most of the year is reasonably sleepy and then on weekends in the summer is slammed. I feel like this place was all over what to do in the Catskills mountains and I'm not really sure why? We went in for coffee a few times and it was good. Otherwise it was just a normal kind of convenience store to me. I did see their menu online for hot food and was very interested to try the French toast bread pudding on the weekend. Well unfortunately the menu online isn't up to date and they don't serve that anymore. Super disappointing. I settled for the pancakes with whipped cream and fresh fruit expecting blueberries and strawberries. I got blueberries and apples. Which is fine but apples kind of make my mouth hurt so not so fun. The whipped cream was really watery. The pancakes were freshly made but tasted super gritty and dry. We also got there one morning at 730 one weekday morning and learned that the website is also wrong and that they actually open at 8. Overall, the coffee was good, but everything else was not up to date online and therefore disappointing. read more

Want to love Circle W because their turkey sandwich is so good, but went a few days ago for breakfast and was in line, with one person in front of me (and nobody behind me) at 10:58am. By the time it was my turn to order, it was exactly 11:00am, but they would not take my breakfast order because breakfast ends at 11:00am. I was so disappointed. I've given up on going here for those reasons as well as I DO NOT like being repeatedly solicited for tips both to my face and over the phone when placing an order. I will almost automatically tip 20% on my own, but when I'm put on the spot by being solicited for a tip.... my knee jerk reaction is to not want to tip at all. This is one of my parents' favorite Palenville places, and after visiting, I can see why. The Circle W is a General Store where you can pick up all sorts of stuff you might need: sauces, oils, vinegars, canned goods, jams, preserves, spices, cereals, rice, pasta, environmentally-friendly cleaning products and any condiment you might need. I was pleasantly surprised by the number of organic products, especially given how difficult it can be to buy such items in the area. They also stock locally-produced goods like quality maple syrup made right down the road. As if that wasn't enough, it also doubles as a delicious cafe serving up an excellent breakfast, fantastic sandwiches, and homemade baked goods of all kinds. There are always specials available including soups, quiches (portabello and goat cheese!), pastries and more. In addition to all the tasty treats, It seems to be a true neighborhood hub; everyone that happens by seems to know each other by name, and it makes you long for small-town times that you never even knew. The owners and staff are incredibly friendly, and they effortlessly combine that old-fashioned community feel with the modern world. A man who could very well be Rip Van Winkle might sit down at the mini-table in the corner and surprise you by pulling out his iPad to play on the free wi/fi. Personally though, this bright, happy place makes me want to put away the electronics and set up at the sunny table in the window with the Sunday Times and a LEGIT bacon, egg and cheese. You won't find a better sandwich in the area. This cozy store with an old home feel is busy with locals and tourists alike on a daily basis. This weekend I went with my personal favorite, the Red Reuben which has pastrami, Swiss and red cabbage smothered in thousand island pressed between some delicious bread. It is heated and served with a pickle on the side. If you have time, sit down and enjoy the relaxation bit. If you are on the go for hiking or skiing, take it to go and enjoy it while experiencing all of what the Catskill Mountains offer. The girls are super friendly and there isn't a bad sandwich on the menu. The grilled cheeses are also delicious. Give yourself a few minutes because everything is made to order. 3/26/19 UPDATE: Although I am usually a creature of habit, especially when I find something I really like, I went rogue today and ordered the Gino's Lincoln sandwich. It has ham, salami, provolone, red onion, lettuce, mayo, oil and balsamic on a hard roll. First off, the sandwiches weighed around 30 pounds (maybe exaggerating). The ingredients all blend together well and because it is so big, the meet slides out with each bite but that adds to the experience. Another 5 star sandwich. Such a cute little cafe/convenience store en route back to the city! My fiancé and I stopped by at the recommendation of the front desk staff at our hotel and couldn't have been more grateful for the tip. We both had breakfast sandwiches on the softest Kaiser rolls with poppy seeds, and a generous helping of their fresh-squeezed orange juice -- extra pulpy, just how I like it! I added an extra egg, hot sauce, bacon and cheese to mine and was full through to dinner. The customer service and warm hospitality also couldn't be beat. My boyfriend and I stumbled upon this adorable cafe after trying to hike Kaaterskills Falls (tip: you need crampons if you go during the winter!). Cold and tired, we decided to pull up to Circle W General Store - and boy, was I glad that we did! It's so cute inside! They have a few small aisles of basic grocery items, teas, essential oils, and local upstate NY goodies (maple syrup, honey, jams, etc.) But the main draw is the cafe in the back. We weren't that hungry but were in desperate need of something hot with caffeine so we got a cappuccino, coffee, and granola+ yogurt+ fruit (the paninis and soups sounded really yummy though!). We gave our orders to the super friendly staff and then grabbed one of the tables by the side. Btw- love the ambience. They brought us our order and I was so happy with the foam on my cappuccino - I love me some frothy caps! The yogurt and granola was really good too. It was just what we needed on a cold winters day. It filled up pretty quickly after we sat down too - and it's pretty apparent why. If I'm ever back in the area, I'll probably stop by! read more

Excellent place for lunch right before heading into the Catskills for some hiking! My family and I stopped by for a meal. The decor made it feel like it was a hipster cafe in Williamsburg, not a general store in the middle of nowhere. The sandwiches were a bit expensive but generously portioned and well-made. I got a panini with prosciutto, goat cheese, fig jam, and arugula and felt that they were too generous with some of the items & threw off the balance a bit... but the other sandwiches were all well portioned and the veggies were super fresh. The rest of the store had some interesting things to browse through but I wouldn't necessarily buy the items from there unless you were in a pinch because they do have to charge a lot for the items. (Having lived in a small rural town for a few years and spoken with the local general store owner, I understand the high prices.) read more

What an arrogant, shady little business this once good cafe has dissolved into. Oh, sure. The sandwiches are good but SO WHAT if the staff provides little but subpar service and overall disrespect to its customers? Let's start with the fact that they refuse to provide restrooms to paying customers. They may be legally exempt because Circle W seems to have opened prior to any law requiring them to do so. It's still sucky and tells me that the owner is too cheap to treat customers as civilized members of society. Really SUCKY and CHEAP! Ewwww! The lack of a restroom most certainly whacked up my lunch experience as my lunch partner (a senior citizen, btw!) was directed to a gas station a 3-minute walk away. Unfortunately, that gas station refused to allow my friend to use their restroom. (I'm going to guess that the Mobile Station people are fed up with Circle W staff sending their customers to use their facilities instead of providing them of their own decency and accord.) Soooo my friend was forced to walk another 7 minutes in the opposite direction to Dollar General. Fortunately, DG was willing to pick up Circle W's slack and let her use their restroom. (How heinously unneighborly of you to dump that on nearby businesses, Circle W!) She then walked another 3 minutes back to the sandwich shop - where her food was getting cold. That's 13 minutes and over a 1/2-mile walk! Sorry, folks but that's just ugly, disrespectful and frankly inhumane. I couldn't imagine how impossible a visit to this place would be for someone with a physical disability or injury...but quite obviously needs any customer is of little concern to the owners of Circle W. So what are we up to here? Circle W has demonstrated to us that it is cheap, sucky, ugly, unneighborly and inhumane. And we haven't even been served our sandwiches yet! So now let me get to the fiasco of their full grift... While my friend was out on her unexpected and extended sojourn to the nearest available latrine, I waited the 20 or so minutes for our 2 sandwiches to be ready as well as for my friend to return to enjoy lunch. I glanced at the bill and noticed that it seemed quite high, but at quick glance I only noticed that the cashier had charged us twice for the same soda. Assuming this was just a simple mistake, I brought this to the cashier's attention and she corrected it but then she took my receipt and tossed it in the trash. I asked her to retrieve it for me since - it's MY receipt! I then went back to the table. My friend returned soon after and we FINALLY had the opportunity to eat lunch while also looking over the bill. As it turns out we were charged an extra $1 for the Great Red Rubin and an extra $2 Tannery Panino over the price quoted on the menu which we were presented at the counter - as well as on their website. Refusing to delay our lunch any longer, we decided to eat instead of (yet again) asking the cashier to correct the bill to reflect the price we agreed to pay when we both directly pointed to the item on the menu! After lunch we confronted the cashier about the discrepancy and was told "Oh that's an old menu." Now, I don't know if this person was stupid or corrupt and I really don't care which it is because what she informed us is that the owners of Circle W are CHEAP, SUCKY, UGLY, UNNEIGHBORLY INHUMANE and SHADY! Why is every person that walks into Circle W being quoted one price and charged another? I'll tell you why...because the owners of Circle W are running a dishonest grift and are ripping off their customers. There are other places for a good sandwich without the cagey practices. Pass this place by. These grifters are unworthy of your business. The place had one person in it and it took her 10 minutes to start making my latte and then when I said thank you - she stared at me, so I said it again and then she responded with the biggest attitude. I went to a wedding in the Catskills recently, where everything is apparently very spread out, and rented a house in lovely Palenville with my husband and a dozen of our friends. We found very quickly that there weren't many places to eat in Palenville--the restaurant by our house was only open between 5 and 9:30, no help for a large group in search of a place to get lunch. We were happy find Circle W, which despite its generic convenience store-sounding name was a hipster-as-fuck general store with a cafe. It was a charming, quaint little place, most of it devoted to aisles of merchandise. There were practical items like toiletries and snack foods, as well as a wide range of gift stuff--books on Palenville and the Catskills, unique toys and ceramics. Everything was expensive and curated, boutique shit only. We were thinking of buying some shampoo here, but that plan went out the window when we saw the selection. Not the most functional general store, I guess, but with a definite vision and a strong commitment to that vision. The back of Circle W was devoted to the cafe, where we ordered sandwiches over a deli counter from a chalkboard menu. Service was kind of whatever. The cashier insisted on taking our order all at once--there were like ten of us, with at least 5 or 6 checks--and it took something like 45 minutes for most of our sandwiches to get made. (Two came out immediately, and it later turned out that they'd been for another party, but no one figured this out until it became clear that the rest of our lunches were in limbo. I hope those other people got their sandwiches in good time.) My husband and I had errands to run before the wedding that afternoon, and that unexpected delay put a real rush on our day. The food was good, though, and we had a great time eating on the attached patio. I got the Helena panino, a hearty sandwich with Genoa salami, provolone, marinated artichoke hearts, and roasted red peppers on ciabatta. It was very tasty, with good ingredients and a lot of nice flavors and textures. I also got a side of macaroni salad, which was on point, creamy with a pleasant bite. With some Kettle chips--we shared several bags, and did you know dijon Kettle chips are amazing?--this made a solid, satisfying meal. I'd recommend Circle W for lunch if you're in Palenville. It's a cute place, and the food is much better than necessary, given the competition.
