You can really taste the quality of the ingredients, and everything feels thoughtfully made. The ambiance is warm and cozy, the kind of place you want to linger in. I also love that it's part cafe, part market, so you can grab incredible food and also pick up market goods like fresh bread and local items. Rosie General is a cute little spot in a great location at Kingston waterfront. Went there for brunch recently, and I found it pretty hard to navigate, to be honest. Was very unsure about seating, which seems to be first come first serve. There is a section of tables and chairs, and then barstools along the window counter. You have to just hover until someone leaves, and be mindful of people waiting. Difficult to know who is waiting to order, who is waiting to be seated, who is buying pastries, who is shopping in the store, etc. Order at the counter, and be mindful that there is a printed menu and also a chalk menu above you. The food was good. You also have to listen pretty intently for your name to be called. It's a little hectic in there, but good vibe. read more

Even at 11am-ish on a Friday, Rosie was rammed with a funky-good crowd. But with a bit of patience, there are plenty of seating options: by the window counter facing the street, up at the bar, the cozy nook with some plushy, velvet-like benches where you can leisurely do some work or towards the bar counter in the back. So without further ado, let's get down to more good stuff: you order up first, grab a seat, name is called. All breads are made in-house and almost everything else is. And food is tasty. The menu seems small but there are excellent options for all sorts of eaters- Vegan dishes, Vegetarian, meat dishes, Pescatarian and (maybe?) gluten-free. Then again, there's something for everybody that'll make you say mmmmmmm. Do inquire about other breakfast or lunch items not listed on the main menu. Hubs loved his crispy, thick cut bacon in his BEC on an English muffin. My house-cured lox was pristine, the onions are sliced paper-thin as they should- as were the mini cucumbers. The bagel....oh man, the bagel. Let's just say this, even my favorite spots in Woodstock (or towns near it) that offer a Lox & Bagel sandwich- the bagels aren't even all that- they're stiff as a board- even when toasted and it's like chewing on rubber. Not these my friend. Not these. Bagels at Rosie are simply airy. I'm a fan. I think if I lived in this town, Rosie would be my favorite go-to for breakfast! Went here for lunch on the way to Saugerties this week. Rosie General is a charming cafe that bills itself as a butchery and bakery with pickles and pie. There is a good amount of counter/bar seating and a few tables for small groups. I ordered the egg salad sandwich and a cappuccino with oat milk. The sandwich was delicious; it's been so long since I had a good egg salad sandwich! My husband ordered the Spicy Egg Toast and my MIL got the avocado bialy, and sadly, neither of them were too impressed with their meals. The cappuccinos also left much to be desired. I was in Kingston, New York recently and found myself in the Rondout area on my way to the maritime museum on the Hudson River. Rosie General was bustling and looked like a great place to try for lunch. Rosie's is in an old storefront and serves breakfast, lunch and baked treats. There is a little shop with food items, cookbooks and other cute things for sale. Stools and tables are packed around an L-shaped counter that has glass display cases with pastries, cookies and other treats. Although they have a board with the available food items, I found it to be a little confusing. Order are taken by servers at a bank of cash registers, but the way it's set up, it almost looks like you should place your own order. I had the egg salad sandwich, a bag of chips, and a slice of olive oil lemon cake. Everything was delicious, and I really enjoyed the lemon cake that was light and airy despite olive oil based, which often tends to be heavy. A lovely and unusual place for breakfast or lunch. Certainly on the pricier side for the food quality in my opinion. Our $11 egg and cheese on a bagel was just ok and the turkey sandwich was loadded with mayo in an unappetizing way. The $5 orange juice in the drinks case tasted like Tropicana in a plastic cup :(. The cookie and brownie we enjoyed the mostest! Stopped in for the first time today. Wasn't greeted and interacted with three people behind the counter - all were not friendly, and none welcomed us or asked what we wanted. It was odd. We stood near the counter for minutes and almost walked out before someone looked up. Odd. The drinks we had and the baked goods were tasty though. Adorable little shop and restaurant. I loved that they had all kinds of their house made pickled things available for sale! We ordered some things to go and it was all very yummy. I especially liked the toast with egg, chili crisp, sautéed greens and white beans. That's something I could totally see myself attempting to replicate back home. Cuttttteeee! Took a drive up to the area and found this spot on a walk. It's covered in plants, old photos, market goods, pastries, breads... you name it. Rosie General has so much character and charm you'll want to stay all day. Their lunch menu was not sprawling with options but I know you'll find something you love. I opted for the turkey sandwich (simple, I know) but it was fantastic! With a little avocado on it and a pickle on the side, it was a great lunch and oh so filling. They let us know while we were on line that it would be about a 20 min wait once we ordered so we got coffees and teas to sip on while we waited. They have lots of tables and a long counter along the window with seats so chances are you'll find a spot. They are right on the corner of the cutest road packed with vintage shops and boutiques and a 5 minute walk to the water. Was in Kingston for a week, and stopped in a few times for breakfast or snacks in the afternoon (if you read my reviews - you know I like snacks). Everything was super fresh, and prepared fresh. Even though they list no substitutions - I have a really bad dairy allergy, and they accommodated my request to remove the dairy from my orders. Their hours are not great for a breakfast spot - I'm up for work at 6:30am and really want something available before 9am - normally I'd drop a star for that, but the experience was just so darn good that I can't in good conscience. Oh my god....this place is AMAZING! If I could give 10 stars I would. This general store took over the old Sillypot Antique space on the Rondout and what they did with it is unique and beautiful with such old school charm. They have everything here - cheese, meat, eggs, homemade breads with sourdough base, sandwiches, bagels, excellent coffee, baked goods and so much more. The type of spot you could go for breakfast lunch snacks or to pick up fresh local provisions. They have a few cute tables toward the back, seats at the large round bar or a long counter with a huge window facing the street. And plenty of plants to add to the cozy vibe. I came away with fig walnut bread, a cookie, slice of blackberry almond cake, a cold bean salad, fennel taralli and a cold pineapple tepache - everything made in house and really delicious! The best part is the friendly service. It's a family-owned business and the owners are knowledgeable, warm and will spend time actually having a conversation with you. I can't wait to go back. Yep. I like it. Was honestly hesitant to write a review because of a past experience there. Which I should have left a 1 star review for but I swallowed my anger and walked away. Only to come back several more times and enjoy myself. Could have been 4 or 5 stars if only I had gotten an egg.... So I got their lox bagel, or whatever they call it, and I often like to have an egg on it when I order this. Personal preference. So I order an egg added. No, sorry we don't do that. Ok I'll get one on the side. No, we don't do that. So I get cheeky and try to order their egg sandwich without everything except the egg knowing their POS system will allow for removal of components in a dish. No, I'm sorry, the chef is busy and we cannot make off-menu items. ( mind you there were three or four other tables who had food in front of them and nobody else in line with me) *blank stare* and then I have to let out a laugh. I mean it's laughable. Clearly he is cooking eggs to order for their sandwiches, do you seriously not see how absolutely ridiculous that is? You are saying no to an easy EASY $3 because "it's off menu"?!! Wake up! My boyfriend drove us here on our way from the city to the Catskills. The shortbread was dense and delicious. I only ate half and saved the rest. Three strikes even before we got our food. Please try not to laugh at the absurdity of this review. Here goes: any place that claims "no substitutions" is already barking up the wrong tree. They claim the "kitchen can't handle them," but the excuses they make up, and the time they waste explaining them to customers is the real waste of time, and why this review had to be written. I asked if my ham sandwich could be made on their sourdough sliced bread instead of the semolina sesame seed bun, and this is the ridiculous excuse I got from the 35-ish blond woman behind the counter. "Well, the way we layer the cheese and ham and lettuce, makes it more difficult to get built on the sourdough bread, and sometimes there are many holes in the bread so we only make the ham and cheese on the semolina." I swear, without actually rolling my eyes so far in the back of my head, I could actually see the people behind me. First, the sourdough was already cut in a basket by the cook's station. I could see it had no holes, and so what! The bread has holes. Can you imagine bread with holes in Sicily? How would their race survive the great hole calamity? She also said "well, it can get messy with the sauces dripping through." OMG. What?? How and why does this place have such ridiculous, unrealistic and childish rules? On top of this, their desserts were uncovered and to the left of the cash register and the breads and pizzas right in front of the cash register...again, uncovered. Do they realize that their patrons are still wearing masks in the store, and that they should be more careful with their food being RIGHT there at the counter during yet another wave of the pandemic and Monkey Pox, nevermind sneezing and coughing. People are leaning right over the food when they're at the register paying, with their shirts actually touching the food. Anyway...back to the ridiculous "Sad-which" debacle. I even said, "I don't want any sauces or Mayo or anything on it, just ham and cheese. When she said "no," I asked if she could make it on French baguette" Her answer? "No, I'm sorry, we're all out baguettes. Someone came in and bought all of them." Strike two: don't sell all of your baguettes to one person. Reserve some. And then, for my the salad I ordered, "I'm sorry we ran out of that type of salad and those types of green and can substitute it with other greens." Strike three. While I'm waiting for the food to be made, why did I see two huge baskets filled with French baguettes five minutes later on the bar? Were those old and just for looks? We're they not French baguettes, or similar? Why, for the love of crust, couldn't those be offered? And the big question of the day...how do you run out of all this at 12:30pm, a half hour into lunch time. I don't get this place, at all. These kinks should have been ironed out weeks into your opening. Aside from the fact that it was 100 degrees outside today (No joke, it was one hundred degrees), there was no circulation and possibly, at best, a poorly functioning air conditioning. Sadly, this is what happens when people don't understand the food service business from the ground up. Everything about my experience was poor, with the exception of the sandwich which was just okay, but NOT even close to what I wanted. Let me be clear, I never even showed any sign of incredulousness, or acted argumentative, I just said "cool, yeah, let's try the sourdough." We didn't want to buy anything else there, since it was exposed to everyone, and did everything I could not to show my displeasure, hence this terrible review....after I had a few hours to think about. I promised myself if it still bothered at bedtime, that I would write this and use it as a teachable moment for how you treat your customers. This is an opportunity for your business to understand, when a person asks for a substitute bread on a sandwich , you say "yes, no problem!" It's not your concern if the Mayo spills through the holes in the bread, or if the arugula falls off the plate. That's a tragedy the customer will deal with on their own. People who eat in your place may be eating out for the first time after two months in the hospital, and are craving their first sandwich a certain way. Make it the way they want! And don't make up BS rules that make your first time customers feel like THEY were being reprimanded for "making a special request." I've just never heard of such a stupid thing. Remove that "no substitutions" nonsense. You're not a Michelin rated restaurant with a chef's menu tasting. You're a deli/bakery. You're number one job is to make people happy and never, ever, say no to such a simple request. Ever. read more

First time getting lunch from Rosie General !! I got the House made Pastrami Reuben, a Kitchen Sink cookie (no picture) and 2 Everything bagels for later. The flavor of the Rueben was good. The bread is baked on premises and was fantastic as the was the house made aioli. My only criticism was there was only one slice of Pastrami on the sandwich. It is thick cut and then grilled. It was a bit dry. I prefer a thin cut Pastrami piled high! But, that is just me! The "Kitchen Sink" cookie was just that. Moist and delicious with all kinds of nuts, chocolate and other things that made it great! The house baked bagels were really good as well. Next time I want to try the Bialy and the Oatmeal and Golden Raisin cookie! They both looked amazing! They have a variety of fresh fruit, various pickled items and assorted grocery items as well. My wife and I tried three different times at different times of day before forming our opinion. All three times the coffee was good (nothing special, but no complaints) and all three times we got a huff when asking for non-dairy milk. Not sure why it matters which bottle you pour from, especially when you're charging more for oat or almond. But we pressed on. We are regular working folks who stopped in for coffee and a snack--clearly not rich and fancy, which might be why we were ignored for at least 5 minutes while the staff chatted amongst themselves. All three times we've gone in we have been ignored. When we were finally helped there was no greeting, no smile, no "what can I get you" just a stare while we wondered if we should speak or run. We can handle unfriendliness and pretentiousness (they have both in spades) but most importantly the baked goods are sitting out in the open at the front of the counter where countless people stand, breathe, cough, TOUCH, and otherwise contaminate all day long. The woman "helping" us took our cash and with the same hands picked up cookies to put in our box, then rearranged the remaining cookies. She never sanitized or washed her hands or used gloves. I watched two other staff do the same. Many customers were wearing masks, several were elderly, and I didn't think we needed to remind them our county is currently being devastated by covid and now monkeypox. Just out of respect for your customers you MUST cover your food. It's not expensive to put up a thin piece of glass or plastic if you insist on displaying food next to the cash register/in front of the entrance. Very very bad practice. Even if the food was good and not ridiculously overpriced (a coffee and two cookies was $20, the sandwiches and small salads are way more), the service here is atrocious. Not one employee smiled or greeted any customers. They seem bothered by people being in their storefront. All this without mentioning there are already two cafes on the same street--one has been serving homemade baked goods, sandwiches and coffees for 20 years. If you're the new kid on the block at least pretend you care about the block. Or the health of your new customers. We have a feeling this place will stick around to serve the city crowd and the rich folks who park their yachts down the road and seek out a $15 bagel. We'll stick to Dolce for coffee and lunch, and HalfMoon for donuts and treats. Someone tell Rosie's to spend less time and money advertising (they are alllll over chronogram, local papers, social media bragging about their amazing offerings) and more time training owners and staff on food safety and customer service. read more

This place is quite pricey but their products are *very* good. Excellent sandwiches, great baguettes and tasty baked goods. My issue, and the reason for 3 stars, is that they will not allow you to request *any* substitutions on your sandwiches, which cost as much as $17. If you're going to charge that much for a sandwich, you should really make them the way people want them. It's a small thing that is, for me, a pretty big turnoff. I've been in food service and it's just not a big deal to hold the mustard or add a slice of tomato or whatever. Their soup-Nazi policy tells me that this is a place that is run by jerk, who don't want to make their customers happy and as I said, that's just an unnecessary turnoff. read more

They've only been open three days now, but hopefully they'll take ownership of this Yelp spot soon. In the meantime, this place is really promising! They're making all kinds of fermented things like sauerkraut, vinegars, pickles, etc, which are on display behind the counter, and they use them in their prepared foods but also sell small jars of tempting things like garlic crisp and fermented hot sauces. They have a reasonably extensive menu, and they carry an interesting range of locally made foods and some quirky mass-manufactured selections. I had a breakfast burrito that was really exceptional - high quality cheese and chorizo, something tangy (maybe one of their hot sauces?), and not cooked to dryness as they sometimes are.
