Ulster County used to be my home and I've noticed Calcutta Kitchens during my travels through Kingston. It's one of the businesses on that stretch of Broadway to endure while others have changed hands. So the other day, I decided to take a peek inside and find out what's for lunch. Chicken Vindaloo. There was also a vegetarian option. Each cost $15. The vindaloo was really delicious. I could smell it as soon as I walked in. The location is both a gift shop/ market and restaurant. There's dry goods and ready-made foods for sale on the shelves as well as brightly hand-painted gifts such as food storage containers and kitchen towels.I bought both as gifts for friends. I also got an order of vindaloo to eat-in along with unsweetened ice tea. The meal was delicious. The business owner is gracious and helpful. Her ready-made lunches are served in what look to be attractive eco- friendly paper containers. When I let her know that I couldn't finish my meal, she smiled and said," I'll give you a cover for the container so you can take it home." The cover fit perfectly and was secure. Such a shame that a place like this has so much potential but the owner can ruin its vibe. It's not my first encounter with her. All my experiences with her have left me with a bad taste in my mouth and I have overlooked it until recently. She's not nice, she tries to be pleasant but comes off insincere. Recently I spent almost $100 there and ate there. The meals come with a very small/trial size condiment/chutney that holds maybe a tbsp of content. I asked for another one and she was hesitant, she told me that I could buy them and pointed to a shelf. Seriously, I couldn't believe it! I asked again and she reluctantly gave me a different condiment babbling about how there are different ones. Nm that I just spent a lot of money for mediocre food! The frozen butternut squash and lemongrass was very watery and lacked flavor. I used it as a broth that's how watery it was. The hot chai was bland and watery with no taste of spices. The chicken curry was decent but again lacked depth of flavor and was on the watery side. It's very sad bc I like Indian food and want to support local businesses but not when you're treated like this esp by the owner who is very cheap and unpleasant. Food has gone downhill and watering everything down to cut costs doesn't help. And it's way overpriced like other reviewers state. read more

The food is fresh and yummy. I'm gluten-free & dairy-free, and it's easy to order a tiffin that satisfies. I'm happy to say some of the tiffins have heat, and none of them have been too spicy. Always, just right! read more

I wanted to stop in here after seeing all of the great reviews. My friend and I had Tiffin 1, which was a chicken dish with rice. He got some samosas which were good, and I got the Indian Cole slaw which was also good. The Indian spices were delicious throughout. The cashier wasn't particularly friendly and was a bit distracted when we were cashing out, but overall we enjoyed our dining experience and definitely plan to return! Yes, yes, yes, stop here! Adorable building from the outside and lovely, well stocked, and clean inside. Greeted and served by a friendly young lady-I had a small bite there and then took a lot to-go. The Pav Bhaji was the absolute bomb! The flavor-wow. Full of flavor. Kerala Chicken Dry Curry was also delicious. Absolutely will stop in again next time I'm in town. read more

Amazing spot! Cute space. Friendly service - she took time to explain ingredients to us. Love that you can do take out or eat in. They have different dishes everyday. We had 2 samosas which were the best ever tasted, basmati rice, ragda, and an order of paratha, which was also incredible and buttery. The Ragda was good, lots of spice and came with fresh slaw and cilantro yogurt sauce to tamp down the heat. Also love the little market with gifts including their own Indian sauces, chutneys and spice blends. Definitely will be back! read more

I ordered samosas online. Within one minute of ordering, I got a text saying my order was done. When I arrived there three minutes later, I was handed a paper bag with my samosas and sauce. They were less than luke-warm. I think they must have been cooked a long while before I ordered them and just put in a bag. I expect freshly cooked food, not something that's been sitting around all day. read more

We loved this shop! Everything we had was terrific. We tried both of the daily tiffin (chicken and vegetarian), the kheer, limeade and the rosemary shortbread and the flavors were terrific. There is a great selection of grocery items as well and we got a perfect mango, a mango lassi and some spicy snack mix. All great and we left happy. Love this place. Have been three times now. Every time I run errands in Kingston I get their limeade, their samosas, and something to go for later. I've had. A couple different curries and was impressed by all of them. The limeade is unique but if you like a salty spiced and lightly sweet drink you'll like this. The store is also super cute! read more

Great Indian food to go, spices, chutneys, breads, and basmati rice. This is now our go-to place when we are craving for Indian food in Kingston. Not much lunch menu, but there's always a vegetarian and meat dish, and the samosas tastes great. I, myself prefer a very small selection of dishes, rather than a whole lot where the quality of cooking is nil. This place will provide you simple, authentic, meals and that's most important! Everything we had was phenomenal! I grew up on Indian food and this place is delicious. Loved the tea I had also.

The food is absolutely delicious. The meals are reasonably priced and the chai tea has free refills if you request a mug. Make sure to try the short bread cookies and samosas! read more
