Shockingly bad experience for an early Saturday dinner. We were early for a show so decided to take our time and order appetizers before ordering our dinner. The room was uncomfortably warm and shabby with an unpleasant odor. Appetizers arrived, but where not as described in the menu and included meats despite having ordered vegetarian dishes. Instead of an apology and effort to make it right the surly owner argued before grudgingly offering one vegetarian samosa (The order contained about 5 appetizers). Even the samosa was terrible seemed like a leftover that was refried. I was so put off I didn't want to chance an entree and just as well since my dining companion was not happy with hers. A shame. I like Indian food and was looking forward to trying this place. so far Namaste is by far the best I've found. read more

Just ate here and was not impressed. First off, we arrived at 5:30 and the place was dark with a Closed sign up front. We asked if the place was open and the owner Mohammad said "of course!" rudely and when I said the sign said closed he said "no it doesn't, it says open!" There was no one there but instead of seating us we had to wait for our full party to arrive. We decided to stay despite the rudeness and waited over an hour for our meals. It didn't make a lot of sense since there was no one there when we arrived: The waitress was nice but clearly overwhelmed. When the food finally arrived it was ok - nothing was flavorful and the chutneys and chicken tikka masala were an unnatural green and red (surely from food coloring). If the service was better and we had a kinder reception then I may have rated this place better but sadly, it's one of the few Indian restaurants in the area so probably why it still gets business. read more

Was looking for a last minute meal. I called ahead for an order of tandori chicken take out. A lovely, tender, moist 1/2 chicken with great tandori marinade and thinly sliced seasoned peppers and onions, basmati rice with peas and carmelized shallots with a hint of fennel seed. This is still our favorite Indian restaurant with their perfect Sweet Lassis and Mulligatawny soup and naans; I'm just adding the info that they stopped their buffets during Covid, understandably, and those have not returned. But the food is still worth coming in and/or taking out! PS The spice level varies from dish to dish, so there should be something for everyone. We personally love that there are many dishes that are flavorful without being hot. read more

We have been eating here for almost a decade, and it is consistently good with a lot of variety. The Curry House helped raise my kids, mostly on Tandoori chicken, Lamb curry, Fresh shrimp (appetizer), and mango lassis. Tandoori fish, chai and rice pudding is my favorite meal. And, the all-you-can-eat buffet is back, but only on Sunday nights. I'm not usually one to write a negative review, but I was rather unimpressed...probably won't go back. The food wasn't bad, just a bit lackluster for what I would expect from good Indian food. My Tandoori chicken looked delicious, but the flavor was quite mild...on point, but mild. Perhaps it was the large pieces with not enough time to marinate...more salt? Either way, if I paid 50% less I would have been very happy, but I was expecting better. Chai tea was also under spiced. Very milky with little chai flavor. The rice was actually quite nice! Mild cumin flavor and a few fried shallots, but not good enough to redeem the rest of the entree. On a last unfortunate note, the owner was not service oriented or kind. Vacuumed next to me while I drank my tea and would have nothing to do with cordial conversation...‍ Maybe I'll give Red Hook Curry House another chance one of these days, but it probably won't be soon! read more

I ordered a variety of dishes, and all were great, except for the chicken soup which I didn't realize would be a coconut base with chicken... I decided to write this because there are so many negative reviews that seem quite unfair. The quality of my food was very good, and traditional foods are on the menu. There does seem to be a labor shortage evident, so maybe some of the "grumpiness" people are harping about is due to the fact that there are not enough hands working. I had a genial conversation with the front desk owner (?) who while some called gruff could also be seen as overworked and harried. Excellent flavor but why do they need to overcook the proteins to this extent? I was very much looking forward to the kebabs and lobster curry and the curry itself was delicious, but the kebabs and lobster were so extremely overcooked that it wasn't possible to really identify their flavors at all. The kebabs were very very dried out, needing a lot of condiments to get them down, and the lobster was very over cooked with no flavor and a dry/chewy texture. The kebabs are small and need only a brief cooking and lobster meat cooks very rapidly and should only be added for a minute or two at the end before taking it off the heat. I will stick with chicken dishes going forward which this restaurant seems better able to cook properly (I have had the chicken korma prior which was my only other experience at this restaurant and it was very good). I definitely appreciate having this restaurant in town, but technique needs a little work. read more

Honestly, been to a ton of different Indian restaurants, and this is hands down one of the best. Everything is hand made with care (you can see right into the kitchen, it's a family operation). Not sure why this place doesn't have higher stars but it's a shame. Yes you may have to wait a bit longer but it's worth it for high quality food made to order. If you're in red hook you should definitely give this place a shot, and if you drink, bring a bottle of wine! read more

The food was Just ok! it took over an hour for my to go order to be ready , and the didn't seem very busy for a wednesday evening only 2 of 5 tables had customer's.. My main complaint is with the owner !!! very very rude man, while waiting the extra 15minutes for my order to be prepared, I tried having a small conversation with him since he was standing next to me at the front counter I won't say more but he should not show his face to customer's nor his attitude! it ruins everybody's mood. read more

He snapped at this young girl waitress who was working her butt off because they were understandably understaffed. Who would work for this guy? He charged us for a Soup we never received and then took off the price of the soup without recalculating the tax. Two stars because the food was good. At around Six-Thirty post meridiem on the evening of Saturday, September the Fifteenth, Two Thousand and Eighteen, I, along with an undisclosed number of others, attempted to enjoy the first Indian meal I had had in months. I had received several recommendations across the nation for this seemingly straightforward, generally well-reviewed Indian restaurant. And so, I had a general tingling of excitement from my ankles to around my Adam's apple when the idea of finally trying this almost legendary in my own mind cuisine was proposed. As is generally within how people perceive my character, I ecstatically voiced my excitement and approval. We began our trek toward what I was certain would make this a significant evening worth writing home about. As we approached, somewhat distracted by the Blues Brothers dancing on the rooftop across the street, I, along with my cohorts, was absolutely awestruck by a beautiful, old bitch sitting outside. In spite of our hunger, we stopped and squatted beside the dog to shower it with affection. Once our excitement had been thoroughly rejuvenated by this bear-dog, we ventured at last into the Red Hook Curry House which was now on par with the Holy Grail or the Golden Fleece in my mind. We were greeted, at first, by who I assumed was the owner. This man, clad in a blue and white striped shirt and an unaffected facial expression, received my request for a table kindly and asked that we "please hold on." Without any further conversation, a much younger waitress took over our request and indicated that we were welcome to take either booth. "I can add a chair on the end," the supposed owner explained. We gave thanks and sat. I slid smoothly into the burgundy booth and set my sights on the menu which had been placed before me. I recall being fully and unsettlingly aware of how famished I had become due to our strenuous escapades of the day. At last, we ordered some nourishments. Chicken Tikka Masala. Chicken Curry. Chicken Madras. Naan. Garlic Naan. Vegetable Samosas. Basmati Rice. Iced Chai Tea. Coca-Cola™. The first round of Naan and Samosas arrived quickly and was very tasty, so our hopes remained high. Not long into our sit down, we decided it was appropriate to play "the phone game," in which every member of our conglomeration placed their phone in a pile and was not allowed to pick up their phone, lest they wish to cover the entire check. We began our long wait with a recounting of the previous nights events, which consisted of the consumption of several movies, several episodes of the Nineteen Sixty Nine Hannah-Barbera animated television program Scooby-Doo! Where Are You?, and some marijuana. This conversation led to a chronological analysis of every Scooby-Doo related movie since the initial "Scooby-Doo Goes Hollywood" from the year Nineteen Hundred and Seventy Nine. After nearly thirty minutes of waiting, a quick glance at the illuminated wall clock snapped us out of our nostalgic conversation and struck us each one of us with the unnerving realization that we would not make our organized seven-thirty transport which had previously seemed to be a very reasonable length of time away. Perhaps saddest of all, was the fact that two members of our once-merry band would miss a long-standing commitment to jam with some other fellow musicians back home around eight o'clock. Questions began to arise amongst our party as to the efficiency of the people who were preparing our food and our responsibility in failing to meet a commitment made with others who would likely fail to understand our lack of culpability in our own predicament. Forty-five minutes into our wait, one brave member of our camp inquired as to the estimated time of arrival of our food. The response by the waitress was vague and unhelpful. We didn't learn anything we didn't know, just that the food was going to come out "soon." Since we were under the self-imposed restriction of the phone game as well, we were unable to contact anyone from the outside world to inform them of our increasingly inconvenient situation. To add insult to injury, the room smelled like a spiceful heaven by that point. It was roughly seven thirty post meridiem when our food arrived. It smelled good. It looked good. It tasted good. It might have even been a bit better than good. However, as I have learned from such experiences as ordering a buffalo burger with a party of seventeen at Buffalo Trails Trading Company in Virgin, Utah, the longer you wait for food, the better it tastes. And so, I am not sure how good the food actually tasted as my palette was abnormal at the time of consumption. It may also be worth noting that some of us (myself not included) had recently taken part in the consumption of some cannabis through a very tasty green apple which had been fashioned into a pipe. They always, always get the order wrong, and always charge for the omitted or incorrect items. Check everything in the bag before you leave if you're getting takeout. They won't offer to refund your card, only invite you to drive back and pick up what they missed (gee, thanks!) Food is standard-issue Americanized Indian - generic dishes, generally too sweet and too bland, but not awful - will satisfy if you're craving basic Indian food. I go to Red Hook Curry House almost exclusively for the Sunday and Tuesday dinner buffets, and I like it very much. It's typically about 8 dishes, a nice mixture of meat and vegetable dishes, usually 2 chicken, 1 lamb, pakoras, naan, etc. Their chai, which I believe is home-brewed, is fantastic, probably the best I've ever had. While an Indian buffet should strive for a balance of spiciness in its food, I would say that on average it's probably a little spicier here, but then again, their specialty is curried dishes. I've been surprised a few times by an unexpectedly large number of small hot peppers in some dishes. Sometimes it feels like that little extra flavor you'd want in some dishes was replaced by slightly more spiciness. I could live on the vegetable dishes. The meat dishes, while also good, are sometimes a little inconsistent, especially the lamb dishes. The curried lamb is the best of these. I really need to come here on other nights of the week to try their other dishes and see what their service is like. But the buffet just keeps calling... read more

Onion fritters were delicious and a generous 4, so I took home 2 in the paper bag provided and they soaked the bag with grease in 2 seconds. The aloo gobi was more of a garlicky stew than I've had before. The potatoes were dry and the pieces were cut too large to be comfortable bites. I wouldn't order it again but I'd try something else. We had lunch at Red Hook Curry House today. The food was exceptional! The Mango Lassi really had the taste of fresh mangoes and the Chai was excellent! Almost like the chai we had in South India. We ordered the Shaag Ponir, the Lamb Korai (hotpot), Chicken with lychee and Lamb stew. They were all delicious and tender. We all loved it. We will definitely be coming back here and bring our friends. As for the owner being rude, I don't think that is fair. I come from Asia and I understand the culture. I am old-schooled and sometimes, with traditional upbringing, we can look very stoic and serious sometimes. Definitely, they take pride in their food and do take it very seriously. The hours say they are open and when we called at dinner time we were first told they weren't open and then The phone woman was quickly corrected by the manager that they are so then she tried to say that the phones don't always work. I ordered takeout; vegetable korma and my nephew got samosas. I'm a vegetarian who loves food but hates lack of options or bland. So I'm a big fan of Indian food because it generally has meatless and flavorful options. The other local Indian place, Cinnamon, used to be my go to. But since they moved into the village, they really fell off. I kept going hoping they'd have whatever problems worked out, but nope. So I happened on this place and figured I'd give it try. I'm basing this review on just my one experience, but the food was really good. There was also quite a bit, like enough for three meals. And for both things it was only $20. I have found the man to be very unwelcoming and difficult to work with. Really ruins the experience. I advise against order from them. Business is about more than just food, it is okay at best, but also the experience. If I could I would give them a zero. We have been regulars and they treat us like trash. I will be happy to take my business to cinnamon in rhinebeck. Not only is the food better but they provide an exceptional experience. I hope you all do the same.
