We were out shopping and all of the other Indian restaurants were closed for the mid-afternoon break. It was surprising how busy it was here but we were comfortable. We were seated quickly and our food came out quickly. Service was a little slow but they staff was attending to several big parties. The restaurant is clean and modern. I personally saw over 8 different tables complaining how bad the service was. Disorganized and chaotic. I saw dozens of dishes get dropped at the wrong table. It became comical. The table next to us never and I mean never received the drinks they ordered even though they asked about them every time the server came over. (It was 2 Rum and Cokes) It was a five course meal and we ordered drinks when we sat down and finally received them but only after asking a manager about them after the main course was finished(the fourth course) The reason I am even writing a bad review is because I could accept a disorganized service on a busy night but yet they still had the BALLS to automatically include a 20% service tip on the bill. We have been to Tamarind a couple of times and it has always been a great experience - good, service and the new revamped ambiance looks fantastic. We tried the vegetable Manchurian and it was so good. Outside of India this is the first time I loved the Manchurian so much. Paneer ke shole was great. It never disappoints. Palak Patta chaat was delicious too. Super crispy and fresh. For the main course, we had malai kofta super creamy and yum. Their dal tadka is simple yet so flavorful. Naan - soft and buttery. We were absolutely blown away with our experience at Tamarind. We came in simply looking for a good Indian meal, and while it didn't disappoint, we received much more. We were seated quickly and had the friendliest server! He was thoughtful and kind when taking our order, asking follow up questions and exuding warmth. After placing our order (dal makhani and butter chicken, along with lasooni gobi to start), out came some complimentary papadums and chutney which hit the spot. The lasooni gobi was just perfect and a great warm up to the meal. When the meal itself came, each curry was adorned with a decorative swirl that made it look extra-appetizing. The flavor was on point. When ordering, we were asked about spice levels, and they came out perfectly matched to how we asked for them. The most impressive part of the experience was the bread basket. Do not skip the bread basket! For $6, you can get your choice of bread. For $16, you get bread for days, including paratha, butter naan, garlic naan, and another bread that I forget. It was seriously so much, which was unexpected and exactly what we needed. We left with lunch for tomorrow, but before we did, another server and potentially a chef came by to ask how everything was. What a classy, awesome experience. I went here twice within two weeks, so I'll do a write up about both. Dropped in one night after work for dinner and drinks. First off, the drink menu alone is probably one of the best in the areas. For dinner, I had the Shakarkandi chat to start... it was easily my fave thing so far. Crunchy fried potatoes, raisins, pomegranate seeds... it's sweet, salty, and just soo tasty. The Meen varuval was pretty good - curry was tasty, but I'm not a fan of fish with bones still in them. The second time I went back for Mother's Day, and we had the thali lunch. It was fun to basically have a buffet without having gigantic portions (you can always get more refilling), and many options. Staff was incredibly attentive both times. Bartender knew what I would like, gave me great ideas for dinner, too. When sitting in the restaurant, the server staff was also quick and kind. ALLIUM FREE REQUEST was met. This was a last-minute takeout order because I was not up to cooking. Tamarind dining experience is a bit hit and miss, but I'll give them props for trying to accommodate my allergies to alliums, especially at the last minute. SERVICE: I called the order in and spoke with who I think may have been the manager or one of the wait staff, he ultimately passed me over to another lady who took my order by way of the kitchen. The ordering process was a lengthy one since I had restrictions. It was dinner hour when I called so I appreciated them accommodating our request. We were craving butter chicken, but without advance notice, there was no way they could prepare that without onions and garlic, so we got it for my daughter, and I relegated myself to the recommended dishes of a paneer with a velvety tomato based sauce, most likely made with yogurt. The seasonings were lovely. As always, the proteins are far outweighed by the sauce, which isn't necessarily a bad thing since I tossed the sauce in with some chickpeas to make up another meal. The vegetable dish I got was mixed with cauliflower, carrots, and some other veggies. The sauce was mildly spicy and the vegetables fresh. It was missing something, but I couldn't tell what.( don't say "onions and garlic" because my reviews are always based on my pallet, which is used to NOT having onion and garlic ). The other allium-free dish was made with lentils in a sauce. It was really excellent. The reason I'm not going to give you the names of these dishes is because they were basically custom ordered. If it sounds good to you, just ask them to make something without garlic and onion, shallots, and chives, etc.. BUTTER CHICKEN: we Americans seem to love butter chicken don't we? My daughter had a craving. Sometimes I make it at home, but it's never as authentic as the one you get at a restaurant. She said that it hit the spot. NAAN: i'm sure they make the naan -from scratch and it's really delicious with a great chewy pull and just enough char.SATISFYING! TIP: order extra to keep in the freezer. The yogurt sauce was pretty much a waste of time- watered down yogurt with a few slivers of carrots. Not worth the money. Pass on that and make it at home. I appreciate them trying to make a garlic free however it lacked any flavor. PORTION SIZE: I'm pleased to report that the takeout portion sizes seem to have been more normalized. In the past, we've spent $70+ plus tip for a couple of entrees, naan, and a side and still been hungry afterwards. PACKAGING FOR TO GO. I'm also really impressed at the new takeout packaging which seems to be eco-friendly, instead of those plastic containers that we've grown accustomed to but are not good for our health nor the environment. So they get a star for that. A GOOD EXPERIENCE OVERALL: Would I order the mixed vegetable dish again? probably not. I would order the Dahl/lentils. And extra naan. FOR THE MANAGEMENT: great job accommodating my allergies with no advance notice. I suggest adding a few more vegetable options that can be prepared any style. The takeout containers are brilliant. Increase the portion size a bit more. BY THE WAY, our order without tip: $99 although we did enjoy the leftovers for lunch the next day, Tamarind is a luxury takeaway dining experience. Came in with my daughter tonight at opening. We were finishing up a day trip in Poughkeepsie from Schenectady....Firstly we were greeted by friendly, well dressed and handsome staff. The BAD includes steep prices, understaffed bartenders (took us 25-mins to get a drink) & the place inside & out can use a good cleaning as we saw dirty menus, greasy tables & stockpiled garbage that include old tables, booth seats, trash, etc piled up outside around the building. We've been going here for several years because the food is delicious and the atmosphere is very nice, however note that it's always been a little expensive. The last few visits we have noticed portion sizes have shrunk considerably and yet the prices are the same or even slightly higher. This is an expensive restaurant with delicious food and almost always great service, but now portion sizes are a joke and I don't like it. It's not my imagination as others who ate with us at our last meal said the same. For this reason I am reluctant to go here for a while. Disappointing. The restaurant interior is very nicely designed and decorated to create a nice ambience with lots of room between tables offering the most comfortable, well-cushioned seating I've had at an affordable restaurant. I had the vegetarian Thali, a lunch offering, and enjoyed the variety of food it came with. I couldn't finish what was on my tray but refills are included in the price for those with bigger appetites. I thought it was good value even without refills. Our server, Almaad*, was on point and recommended such tasty cocktails. The cocktail glasses definitely elevated my experience. And the food was incredible. IMO, it's difficult to mess up such a perfect cuisine, but Tamarind capitalized and made everything surrounding the food also perfect. It was kind of a weird experience when we walked in: One person greeted us and then, as they seated another table, someone else came up and tried to seat us, but the original person came back, and was very confused. BATE & SWITCH After visiting this restaurant when they had the smaller location and recently booking our facility holiday party here in December for work the menu was good & food tasty. I decided to come here on Valentine's Day. When I called to make a reservation no one told me that they had a special Valentine's Day menu that DID NOT include any vegetarian options, nor was they being accommodating to allow any orders from their original menu in which we have pre-planned our selections. PRICE WARNING They did not have a cognac called D'ussé and the waiter suggested the Remi VSOP or Hennessey. This is not my 1st time here, but my 3rd. The food is really delicious - I have no complaints. But what I can complain about is the service. We walked in on a Sunday and found no host or hostess. We had to wait for a server to seat us. After waiting a bit we got water and menus. The server left, we perused and decided on our orders. The server was gone for a while, but finally came back to take our order - that went well. Then we waited. And waited some more. While waiting I noticed the water they gave us had some things floating around in it. Gross! Finally my food came out. But just mine. One of my biggest pet peeves is meals not being served in unison. Also, the dish my food came in had been spilled and did not look professional at all. This place isn't exactly cheap and I expect some measure of presentation, which they failed to deliver. As my food cooled we waited for the 2nd meal to come. Finally it came and the server left. Another pet peeve - the server never returned to make sure our meals were as they should be. I was actually going to order Naan bread but didn't get the opportunity. We finished our meals, which were delicious, and sat. My final pet peeve is waiting forever for the check. This server only had 2 other tables - we waited quite a while to pay which really irritated me. As we waited I couldnt help but notice tables around us were left dirty with garbage on the floor. We ate here on Friday night and really enjoyed it! I haven't been to India in many years, but flavor and spice-wise, the food at Tamarind reminded me of food I ate when I was there. We ordered three vegetarian dishes and they were all stand out. I particularly enjoyed the eggplant dish--it had a smoky flavor. I would also like to mention that the cocktails were excellent--and they made a delicious strawberry lemonade for my son. The interior is elegant, unlike most restaurants on Route 9. We ordered fried cauliflower which was fabulous and I made it very clear I thought, we wanted 2 Bowls of a very spicy garlic soup and amazing flavor BUT they brought mine as I waited for my wife's soup so we could have it together but NO...my soup went cold as they finally brought hers BUT hers was MILD not hot. It took so long we decided NOT to order a complete meal and we left after that. My Birthday Choice for a week of waiting. If you order to GO it may be a better choice and take it home and serve yourself. Excellent Food getting it to the table is another thing all together.
