    Stew beef
    Desiree K.

The food is amazing!! It's everything I'd hoped for! The dishes are offered in small, medium and large. We ordered a medium jerk chicken and a medium stew beef. Each dish comes with two sides and the medium is served in a metal, circular tin. I always love when I go to spots like this that offer multiple sizes. I usually pick a size up from what I know I'll finish so I have leftovers for the next day. I could tell this was going to be good just by looking at it. The tin was FULL and the meat was coated in delicious sauces and seasoning. From the moment that I put a piece of stew beef in my mouth, I knew that this place would be a staple moving forward. The meat was SOO tender and juicy. It just fell apart in my mouth. It wasn't chewy or dry at all. I chose rice and peas with fried plantains as my sides and they were just as good. There was definitely food left over for the next day and the reviews raving about the food are absolutely TRUE! This place is amazing and there are so many options. I don't usually get my hands on these dishes too often and when I do, they're not always enjoyable. It was so nice to find a legit Jamaican spot, serving up food that's made the way it should be.

    Fried chicken. Delicious.

The food was excellent and the price is very good for the portion size! Will definitely go back if nearby.

I used Grubhub to deliver my food. The oxtail large portion is so big and I split into 2 meals. Fried plantains are $2 for few pieces. Overall the food is decent and the price is cheap

Sylvia is great. I wouldn't necessarily call it a sit down spot but you do you have the option of sitting there and eating and the staff are very nice. I had the jerk chicken because they didn't have the pork ready yet. I also had some plantains and some greens and rice. The food was extremely good and the portions were very sizable for the amount of money that you were paying. I got the medium for lunch and it came out as a large dinner portion in my opinion and it was only $10- $12

I came to this restaurant recently to get a somewhat home cooked meal. The woman who served me my food and rung me up was very helpful and friendly. I asked her a series of questions which she answered for me. I am finally happy to know the soup menu: Tuesday: Red Pea soup Wednesday: Beef soup Thursday: Chicken soup Friday: Mannish Water (Goat Head Soup) Saturday: Red Pea Soup I ordered Curry Goat with Rice & Peas and a side of cabbage. I forgot to ask for the fried plantain. The rice was really soft. But, the curry goat was tender and flavorful. I just wish the food was a little bit spicy. I paid $9 plus tax for my meal. Which is not a bad price I believe I ordered the small. I would definitely return to try other items on the menu.

This place certainly has authentic Jamaican food for sure. At the recommendation of a friend wife & I stopped in for dinner and the main courses were pretty darn good (i.e. ox tails & rice with peas). Beef patties were ok, however I suspect those bad boys were "real" Jamaican beef patties but I am conditioned to those Tower brands from the supermarket so I could be clueless to an authentic beef patty (meat was not as thick as other processed patties). For a small store front I expected a small cramped spot but it was very spacious, decor was decent and tables very cozy and neat. Overall this is a really neat place to stop in for an informal dinner.

Oxtails, cabbage, and plantains, unbelievably perfect combo of savory, tangy and sweet

Sylvia serves the best Jamaican food in Poughkeepsie, with friendly and fast service to match. I visited on a weekday and was impressed with the reasonable prices for authentic Jamaican eats complemented with outstanding service. I placed my order for Oxtails at the counter and asked for sides of cabbage and plantains, unfortunately they were running low on plantains and instead of telling me to pick something else, offered to straighten out the kitchen which I appreciated. Unlike most visitors, I was dining in, which the staff gladly accommodated although it seemed to be the exception. Within a few minutes, my huge plate of oxtails, cabbage, and plantains arrived at my table with silverware and hot sauce. The oxtails were braised to a melt-in-your-mouth tenderness, falling off the bone into the savory sauce and tangy cabbage. I saved the plantains for the last couple of bites and was not disappointed by the crispy and sweet bites to finish off a great meal. All for less than $20.

So good! I have not had Jamaican food too often but I thoroughly enjoyed this place. Family restaurant with good home cooked food! I had the curry chicken with rice and plantains and my husband had curry goat. Both were delish.service was fast. I have no complaints.

Then I had the Chicken Tikka Masala. This was also one of the best ones I've ever had. The sauce wasn't too sweet, almost slightly smoky. The chicken was fresh and tender. I also had Plain Naan. It wasn't doughy like many I've had. It was slightly thinner which means you won't get full from it. The service was friendly, efficient and attentive. Another plus was they give you a pitcher of water for the table. Highly recommended!

The bar appears to be well stocked, too. We were immediately greeted and told we could sit anywhere we liked. Menus were brought over along with a large carafe of water, and we ordered soon after. Very attentive and friendly wait staff. We ordered the vegetable samosas and garlic naan as appetizers, and they were served with lovely dipping sauces, including tamarind, mint cilantro, and red onion. The samosas were large and freshly made, crisp and delicious pastries filled with potatoes and peas. We also received four generous and delicious pieces of naan. For my entrée, I ordered the vegetable biryani with mint tea, and my friend ordered the zaffrani chicken biryani. Both biryanis were large and served with generous potions of raita. All very delicious! I inquired about the mint tea, which was served in a pretty metal tea pot and dispensed into my cup at the table by our waiter. He said he makes it with fresh mint and some spices, and it was indeed a perfect mint tea experience! I will definitely be back!

The staff was so sweet and excited to have us, even though we were too close to closing time. We got the fried vegetable momo, which came out with two dipping sauces. One was a nice fragrant curry forward sauce and the other was super spicy. I added a little dot of the spicy one on top of the other and it was SO good! We also got thru marinated cucumbers (delicious and spicy) and the gobi Manchurian which was the best I've ever had! I could have eaten two helpings of that with rice and been satisfied. We came here looking for a lovely vegan and vegetarian friendly meal and were so happy! And equally sad that we leave nowhere near here. I can't recommend this place enough!

Sure enough, I found Momo Garden. Being convenient to my itinerary, I invited a local friend to join me for a quick lunch (just momo's), and a chance to scope the rest of the menu. Their website and sign say open at noon on Saturdays, but they were already open when I arrived a few minutes before that. We were given hot tea after being seated. I don't know if you always get that (they have a chai on the menu), but because the restaurant was still warming up from the chilly morning, the tea was very welcome. Various other alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages are also available. Papadam and sauces were also brought to the table. The momo's come in 2 varieties, chicken and vegetable, and you can get them in several ways, including fried, steamed, and Jhol, which is the street-food style served in broth. These were delicious, even better with the dipping sauce. The vegetable ones might fall apart a little bit, so you may want to use a spoon instead of a fork, to be sure you get every bit of the deliciousness. This is a great addition to the area. The rest of the menu will just have to wait until my next visit.
