As a Dominican, the food is okay. You will be lucky if you get there early when things are fresh. I miss the previous owners they were super friendly and nice. But the last time I went there...terrible... the lady at the counter won't even greet you... straight to the "que tu quiere"... rude. Clientele is very shady. Just be on the look out. Rude people everywhere. Staff is pretty cool and the food is hit or miss. Some things are good and some are eh. Lunch prices are decent. Don't believe it when the app says they're closed! Poughkeepsie location is open 9 AM to 10 PM, seven days a week. I'm giving five stars because as I understand it anything less looks bad. I went into the store and asked for a small rice and oxtail and a small rice with two baked chickens. I ran to my car to get my cash because I didn't want to use my phone to pay because I would have to hand my phone over to her and she would go to the corner and pay. When I came back the food was bagged so I paid for it and came home. I opened the bag only to find out I had the two pieces of chicken with no rice. I called them to understand why I paid the amount I money I did. And the lady was initially speaking English with me with no issues, told me the rice and oxtail was a medium. She couldn't explain why I got a medium when I asked for a small. When I tried to ask her to give me the breakdown of what I paid for since I didn't get any rice she couldn't do that either. And all of a sudden she couldn't speak English. On their menu it says that a small oxtail is $10 and a small baked chicken is $7. I also got a tres leche which on the menu says $4. I paid $24 and didn't even get rice with my chicken. What frustrates me the most is the faking that she could not speak English when she started speaking English with me to begin with. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. There are other Latin restaurants in the area with better customer service and better food. My mistake was not asking for a receipt. read more

Killing it in the Dominican/Puerto Rican food game. My wife and I came here at the end of our vacation in upstate NY (this was actually the only time we went out to eat), and were really happy with the choice. Agreed that the area is sketch, but it's worth it. I would say that you have to get the roast pork. Fantastic, I have no idea how they make it, but they're doing it right. You know about your carnitas at the most recent Mexican place you've been to? Yeah this is like double better. The prices are unbeatable too. You just get a "small" "med" or "large" dish pretty much, and they fill it with whatever. We got two "medium," one we got with rice and oxtail, the other one we filled with straight meats - the pork, also steak and onion. The steak and onion wasn't as good as the pork but still solid, and they LOADED this plate up with meat. We had two meals for the price of 0.7 meals. read more

The first one was loaded with yellow rice and beans with a few pieces of Oxtail and pork in gravy. The 2nd plate we asked for no rice because the first had a lot of rice and it was loaded with our choice of roasted pork and steak/onions. This was plenty of food and meat for only $21! We ended up eating leftovers for dinner. Everything was packed with flavor! The yellow rice and beans were great, but the star of the show was roasted pork! My husband is Puerto Rican and only moved here from PR 4 years ago so he wanted to show me his favorite authentic Puerto Rican place to eat and it definitely left a great impression. I personally hate when places have no music or bad speakers while you're eating, or even worse, they claim to be Mexican or something and play Taylor Swift but this place has good speakers and a TV playing the music videos to a lot of Latin trap artists. I just finished my first meal from Nellys, won't be my last! I got a large stewed chicken with yellow rice & beans for $8. Great food! The chicken was sooo tender just falling off the bone. The gravy was delicious! Excellent rice & beans. The plantains are an extra order but totally worth it! Again, huge portions of fried plantain for only $4 - awesome. They have generous portions at a very fair price. The staff was very quick moving everyone along while also being very friendly - I always appreciate that. I think this is mainly a "to-go" place where you go up to the window and order what you want, however, there are several nice tables for seating if you want to sit & stay. Sorry I have to give you a rating of 1 star but disappointed and the food was not good. Got to do better. I normally don't come here for oxtails but my mother wanted to come. We ordered oxtails with rice. I choose the white rice because other choices of rice looked dried out. We ordered the medium size ($14). There was more rice than oxtails. My order had one large piece of meat (which I question if it was oxtail) and three small pieces too tough to eat. So basically I had a container of white rice. My mother's order was similar several tough small pieces with a bunch of dried yellow rice. Both containers of food went in the trash. This location has been a hard no for me for the last couple of years and pretty sure moving forward it will be a hard no for my mother. read more

This place is authentic. The portions are so large a small serving is enough for two people. The roast pork I think is the best thing they have to offer. It is so flavorful and tender. The other thing about Nelly's is the prices are amazing. They did just raise the prices and they are still reasonable. If you want authentic Spanish food this is your place.
