This is hands down the best CrossFit gym my partner and I have been to. We've been doing CrossFit now for the better part of the last 10 years and have seen a few boxes as we've moved houses a few times and this is the box that truly gets it. First off, the owners are involved daily! You see them on the floors, coaching, knowing the goals and abilities of all their members. That is so valuable! The environment that the owners foster here is safety, respect, push yourself, respect, and community (with respect). This place is such a beacon in the community, providing a safe and inclusive space for ALL to come and get your sweat on. Coaches are ALL amazing, I have no favorites because they are all great. I've been to some boxes where I'd avoid going at certain times because I just didn't like the coach but here that is not the case. All are very friendly, knowledgeable, and overall good people. The community here is unlike any other box. Everyone is tight, checks in on each other, respects each other, and cheers each other on. Workouts are tough! Not impossible, as anything can be scaled to your ability but if you're looking for a good sweat, this is your spot. Tiltshift may be one of the best Crossfit places in Seattle. coaching is 10/10, membership make-up 10/10, and the programming is definitely 10/10. Of note: I have been a member of a number of different CF boxes in Seattle over the last 10-12 years, so I feel like I can say confidently that Tiltshift stands out from the rest. Here's why. Keeping it real: the coaching here is much more centered around achievement of YOUR goals, not the gym's goals. This leads to a place where you can feel included and empowered to do your best and that's enough. Where CF gets its bad rep is often rooted in the idea that the whiteboard must be all massive weights and Rx PRs. Don't get me wrong, Tiltshift is challenging and you'll get pushed, but artful coaching leads that pushing to be from inside you, not at you. Community: See above. The result of less bro dude 'tude from the coaching team leads to a stronger and more accepting community. I'm in decent shape and I'm outgoing and social, but I've ALWAYS felt intimidated at Crossfit gyms, I just figured it came with the territory. Until now. I signed up for the intro RAMP program at the LAB. Needless to say I am getting my ass kicked. And I love it. Crossfit can sometimes get a bad rap because if you don't get the form down correctly you can seriously injure yourself. (I see a physical therapist for some knee pain and she sees this a lot). The RAMP program allows you to work on the fundamentals so you don't do something stupid... like try to do it and home and get knee problems, where you end up spending a ton of money to see a physical therapist just to be mobile again. Just saying. I consider myself to be in reasonable good shape and I am happy to say just the intro class destroys. Second class in and I feel sore to the core. A lot of repetition, fast, and stretches afterwards to help recover. The program changes every class so your muscles are always in for a mindfuck. The instructors are really nice and supportive, but more importantly helpful. Definitely looking forward to more classes and moving forward. read more

Ten weeks in and I am officially a convert. I was definitely skeptical about the whole crossfit mantra at first. I thought, why pay so much more for a regimented schedule? But, I have noticed a big difference from my usual mundane gym workouts previously. Before crossfit, I would go to my gym, throw my headphones in and workout on my own. If I didn't feel like doing a last set, I would say, "ah, next time" and be done. At crossfit, I feel motivated to push myself through every workout we do and try to get my best time or score, every time. The workout changes every day, so you never find anything repetitive. I definitely feel physically better, even mentally, strangely... There's also a feeling of community here. I have come to know everyone in the classes I've been taking as well as all the teachers and we all commiserate with each other post-workout. So, yes it's expensive, but in my mind, worth it. IN THIS GYM IT IS OKAY TO LAY HANDS ON SOME ONE AND AS LONG AS THE TRAINER OR THE OWNER HAS NOT SEEN IT, YOU CAN GET AWAY. I have been going to this gym for more than a year now. I loved working out with amazing people and coaches here, especially Rory. I cannot imagine working out from a different crossfit gym as long as I live in Seattle. But something unpleasant happened on, Tuesday, February 27th 2018. While working out at the gym, one of the members, Pooria, pushed me saying I was in their way. This was unacceptable and my heart that was already beating at a higher rate from the workout, was pounding even harder with the rage. I could have fallen down on my face or tripped or injured myself severely. Fortunately, that did not happen. I let the workout get over and told Pooria, "Don't do it again." In utter disbelief he said to me, "What did I do? You were in my way." I repeated, "Don't do it again." To which he replied "I'd do it again!" This was way out of line and while I was verbally expressing my strong opposition to this behavior, Rory decided in his head that it was okay and that such things happen. Rory started to explain to me how it was okay and that I should shut up. Pooria did come to me and apologized. However the incident has left a long lasting effect on my mind. I am unable to comprehend why, but it has. I left the gym that day thinking that Rory does not completely understand what happened and that he supported such incidents happening in the gym. I went home and I could not sleep the whole night. I wanted to work out on Wednesday but I could not make up my mind to get there. On Friday, I fought my guts out and went to work out. After the workout, I asked Rory, what has been done about the incident. He said he emailed the owner, Lindsey, about it and spoke with Pooria. To me it was not enough and I expressed that to him and left. I emailed Lindsey and Rory that night asking why did they not communicate anything to me, in the last 3 days, about the incident, assuring me that such a thing will not happen again and that I must feel secure to resume. To this email, Lindsey replied with complete denial of responsibility and apathy. She said she did not see the incident so she will not do anything about it. And further said that it is up to me and Pooria to peace out and to continue the gym or not. I am greatly disappointed at this handling of the incident. I am so enraged about the incident that I do not want to see Pooria's face ever again. I do not feel like going back to the gym I loved working out at. And here is the owner of the gym completely denying responsibility and being arrogantly apathetic. All I expected was a bit of empathy and assurance that they understand the gravity of the incident and that they have taken measures to prevent it from happening again. With the responses I read, I gave up on that. Anyway, I was clear in my email, on Friday, that I do not wish to continue and asked Lindsey to cancel the membership. I did not receive any email confirming cancellation so I emailed again on Tuesday. I am charged $225.71 for the month of March and I asked if that will be refunded. To this Lindsey replies that the membership is wrapped up as of March 31st. This was followed by the most infuriating part, "Please feel free to use the gym until that time." This has pushed me over the edge. I want to say to Lindsey, "I do not want to use your gym and I certainly do not feel free to do so. You are not doing me a favor. I have paid in full amount." I am appalled at this unprofessional behavior by the owner of such a reputable gym. My heart goes out to some amazing folks who use this gym, who are going to be saddened reading my review but the apathetic behavior of the owner has forced me to do this. I want my voice be heard and that they do not take such an incident so lightly ever again. I also wish no one has to be on the receiving end of such an incident. And if someone is, they must not feel pressured to stay quiet. It is not about just a push. It is about the mentality which tells you it is okay to do that and arrogance of "I'd do it again". It is about the denial of responsibility by the owner and completely failing to understand possible effects of such an incident and not showing any compassion or any regards to take measures to ensure that such a thing does not happen again. read more
