So I walked past this place for a good three months before I finally decided to go in and see what…read moreit was. I danced for 15 years and so I knew that Barre stood for a ballet barre, so I assumed it had to be some type of exercise studio. All of the ladies that work here are super friendly. They have a lot of really great packages and programs. Student discounts, Corporate discounts (if you can get five people to sign up), and New Client Memberships. I decided to try it out and purchased a drop in class which was $18.00. Man! This is not for the faint of heart. I had to modify most of the exercises, and had to take multiple breaks the first couple of weeks. I have always been a pretty active person. I played basketball in college (DII NCAA), and danced. I had been doing CrossFit for 10 months, but had taken a break from it due to multiple surgeries. I also didn't like how bulky I got doing CrossFit or that my WOD only took 20 minutes, and I felt like I hadn't worked out long enough. Barre is completely different. It is very challenging! This is not some Zumba class at your local Y. It is a full hour of circuit style barre/yoga/pilates style exercises. You will get your cardio! Don't worry! You will not stop moving for an entire hour. I love that I get a full body workout and my cardio in an hour. The same workout would take 2 hours of weights and then a two mile run just to get the same feeling. As a mother, I don't have three hours a day to spend at the gym. Barre provides variety to avoid muscle memory, and every class is different. I have been taking all of the 12 o'clock classes during my lunch hour (with the exception of Tuesdays). There are different instructors on different days, but even if you get the same person leading the class the workout is ALWAYS different. I usually have class with Trish or Elizabeth's, and I have done one 4:30 class with Dena. Love all of their styles. They are great. Elizabeth and Trish give modifications and really guide you to challenge yourself, and not give up. I literally feel addicted. I am coming 5 times a week, and I can tell on the days when I don't go that I missed a workout. This isn't a fad workout program, and there are a bunch out there. It is hard work, but if you do it, you wil get the results you want and better! I knew the first time I walked into class and saw a small group of women that looked like dancers that I was in the right place. Not because I look like a dancer, but because I want to look like one! lol I already feel leaner and more flexible. Just try a drop in class, you will be hoooked! It is great, tons of fun, and you will be back.

I've been with I love kickboxing for about 6 months before starting the #6WeekChallange. I…read moreoriginally joined the club to get ready for my military PT test. I hate running, so I had to get my cardio up. (I ended up doing really well, btw.) I'm pretty active (besides running, lol), I have been doing a lot of strength/weight training and I eat fairly healthy. I've was gaining weight (muscle mass) but not losing any body fat. So I decided to start the #6WeekChallenge to kick my butt in gear. It was definitely a challenge. Adjusting to the meal plan the first week was difficult; I was hungry about 99% of the week, but I lost 3lbs and 2% BF that week. The second week, I had no changes in my results, and I was extremely frustrated. (There were a few weeks where I didn't have any changes. ) After talking with the instructors, I adjusted my meal plan a bit to help out. By the 3rd-4th week, I still wasn't seeing the results I wanted, so I talked to some of my fitness friends for additional tips and I had to adjust my meals again. And because I wasn't eating very few carbs, I was unable to sustain my strength workout with weights, I just ended up doing a lot of body weight workouts and adding in more cardio (besides the 3-4 kickboxing classes per week). But I ended up losing 14 lbs and almost 8% body fat!! I was weak, tired, and hungry most of the 6 weeks and there were many moments I wanted to quit and just go eat a Cinnabon, but I'm glad I kept to it and am extremely proud of my results. Although, I know some of the weight I lost was muscle mass. Rather than recommending whether or not to join the club or the 6 week challenge, I'll state my pros and cons. Pros: 1. The instructors are AMAZING. They are very helpful and patient. And the push you when you THINK you can't or just don't want to do the work. 2. The other members/challengers are awesome. They are very encouraging, share tips, and are willing to be an accountability partner whenever asked. 3. Class times are accommodating, for the most part. There are classes later in the evening on most days, for those of us who work during the day. Cons: 1. The club and the challenge are really expansive, even with a military and member discount. 2. The club itself (Tacoma anyways) smells like stinky feet. (Until you get used to it.) 3. The punching bags are well used, it would be nice if they were updated. 4. Challenge specific; if you are fairly fit and don't really have the weight/body fat to lose, it's really difficult to be successful without doing additional things aside of the challenge itself.

Pros: friendly snd encouraging staff, modify things for new people, excellent full body work out Cons: high pressure sales pitch, and it's too expensive and not a flexible membership. $125/month and sign up for a year. If they had a punch card or a month to month - it would be much more doable. But if you aren't working out 3x a week every month. It's just too expensive for what you're getting. If you weren't committing to a year up front - it would be better. If they had a 10 punch card option- that would be helpful- but I also don't want to pay for 100 punches at once. They need more flexible membership types.

I'd never done personal training before, but a friend recommended Summit and I've been partaking in several sessions monthly. Working out with a trainer is much better for me personally, and I've started to see results somewhat instantaneously. I certainly feel the difference between working out solo vs being held accountable and being personally coached. Via Summit I've worked with two trainers and fancied them both - Robert and John are awesome! John has years of coaching and training both professional athletes, various teams, and individuals such as myself. Robert was a college athlete and is in prime shape himself, and he really kicked my butt at my sessions. The workouts are designed for someone older or less skilled like me. They usually have between 10 and 25 people in each hour long class.
