I stopped by today to look at tile for a kitchen backsplash and was super impressed with Doug. He was so helpful, patient, and knowledgeable. I appreciated how he zeroed in on the cabinet and counter samples I brought in, listened closely to my description of the project and preferences, and came up with a number of great tile/grout combinations to try out. Doug kindly sent me home with a bunch of great samples, including extras of the same tiles, so I could get a good feel for them at home. Incredibly, he didn't charge for those samples or pressure me to return them by a certain date. What's even more impressive, Doug gave me the name and address of other tile stores in the area, even though he risked losing my business to them. Because of his excellent customer service, I'd really like to give Doug my business. read more

The service here was amazing! we had one on one help for a good 15-20 minutes. He provided recommendations, went multiple times to get other samples, and truly wanted to help us. He provided samples without asking for multiple forms of payment (other stores charge you if you don't bring them back in 1-2 weeks). I really liked the color of the porcelain tile I picked out for my bathroom and I could not find the style/lookI wanted at another location. I also really like their showroom - it's top notch! For that alone I would want to give 5 stars but I took 2 stars away for a couple reasons. 1. I've been in there about 6 times and bought from them twice - and each time it took more than a solid minute to be greeted (twice standing at the counter waiting while someone was looking down at their computer or paperwork not with another customer). I can go to Home Depot and get ignored there - but I like smaller shops and don't mind paying more if its made up for in A+ service. This is actually the only real reason I took 2 stars away - service is so so so so important in a shop that has high prices - what else are you paying for? The quality of the product is not that far above Home Depot or Lowes - I just like supporting smaller businesses. 2. When I picked up my tile - they were very vague about where to pick it up (go around the corner) and I figured it out but definitely a bit of confusion - like... where is the sign - which port do I stand in front of? I stood outside waiting for about 10 minutes until someone came out with my tile and I was like, "oh good Im in the right place". Just put up a sign that says, "retail customers - pick up here" (cuz i know they have contractors too that pick up and probably know the routine). ALSO - when I picked up my tile - the guy that worked there was way too personal. Im a very personable person but he was asking me all kinds of bizarre questions like we were on a blind date or something. Creeped me out a bit but I wouldn't lower a star for that - that's just a side note. 3. They don't take returns after 30 days as a strict policy. I can go to Home Depot for a strict policy. Just to end on a good note - they do have a great selection and their showroom really is set up well and can give you good ideas of what you can do. read more

We didn't buy our tiles here, just the accent pieces, but Omid was great with helping us find what we need. He has a good eye for matching and we ended up with a piece that I would never have given a second glance to. But it worked beautifully and it's so unique. He was very helpful in giving us sample tiles as well,...and we're talking full tiles, not just a small piece. Other stores charged us for them, he didn't. Great service, great products! And most things are in stock, which is awesome when your contractor needs the tiles right away! read more

Best thing about shopping for tiles here is that you get to take home sample tiles to color match your furniture, paint, textile, etc. They have some wonderful ideas about arranging and mixing different types of tiles. Make remodeling less of a chore and more about creativity. read more

There's everything to like about this place. If you need less expensive tile, check their sale board for limited or discontinued styles. So, I described my project and the salesman immediately showed me three options on the showroom floor (all beautiful), and the proactively suggested we look at the product on close-out to see if I could find something there and save some money! We just completed our bathroom update and I'm thrilled with the results and the service from the Tile Shop. They provided free tile samples, recommended an excellent tile setter (Cathy Raingarden), and helped with color selection on the grout. Their warehouse is onsite and most of their huge selection is typically in stock. They also helped coordinate getting a particular grout color from their San Jose store quickly. The staff was super helpful in finding the right materials for the job without being pushy or intimidating. I've bought smaller selections of tile for other projects from Import Tile and I found their service to be lacking and the selections limited. read more

This is the best tile shop in the Bay Area. It is a small store and everyone is very helpful. We are DIY so we need someone to help us with amounts and choices. They do this here and want to. I was approaching my first tiling project. A friend who had recently completed a full bathroom remodel recommended the Tileshop so highly I went there first and was thrilled with the service and the results. They had a fantastic selection and great displays that helped you visualize the end result, but the most important element was the customer service. I walked in and they were ready to help me. I worked with Doug who guided a beginner in making good choices that produced a wonderful look. He was quick to point out options I'd never thought of, respond to my questions, and help me narrow my choice down instead of getting lost in the sea of tiles. I visited The Tileshop on two occasions. I totally agree with some of the other reviews that the people who work here are not very friendly. I was in the shop for over an hour today. After about 45 minutes, with not one of the 3 persons even greeting me, I had to practically beg someone to help me with my color choices. I did get some genuine assistance, but it was with some obvious initial reluctance. After going to my car, and coming back in for another question, the two workers ducked into the warehouse, apparently pretending not to see me. Little did they know we have a 3,100 square foot house and are actually remodeling 3 bathrooms, a laundry room, our kitchen and 2 fireplaces. They will not be seeing me again. read more

After visiting about 6 other tile shops in Berkeley and Oakland with no success and very little customer service, my husband and I stopped by Tileshop today. There were a few customers in the store when we arrived but we had only been there a very short time looking around on our own when Doug told us he would be free momentarily. About 2 minutes later, Doug found me and answered all of the question I had about a specific tile. Doug gave me all the information I needed about the tile I am considering and offered me a tile sample gratis. He even went to another building to get a newer tile out of an unopened box and then gave me a couple of pieces to take home. Other tile stores in Berkeley charge $10-$35 per sample tile! The tile selection at Tileshop was just what I was looking for and the customer service was excellent. read more

Understaffed. I waited 1/2 hour to get any help just for a bag of thinset and of grout. The front desk people were nice but clearly overworked. One called to someone in the back who never came out. This is certainly a place to check for tile options, but service is better at Import Tile and at italics. read more

I went to Tileshop largely because they promote green certified materials on their website. The 2 clerks with whom I spoke were surprisingly unknowledgeable and unhelpful. There are much better resources in the Bay Area, i.e. ecohomeimprovement on San Pablo in Berkeley where the staff and resources are far superior. read more

Very poor customer service. In fact, nonexistent. We went there with the clear intent of redesigning our bathroom, maybe laying tile in our dining room. The displays were nice, though skewed in the direction of trendy Italian tiles. And the staff were completely self-absorbed, unfriendly, unapproachable. No greeting, no offer to help--broadcasting a sense that we weren't "cool" enough for them to deign to interact with. Some serious customer service training is in order. We went elsewhere with $5000 of tile business. Not a mega sale, but not insignificant. Too bad. read more

I cannot say enough wonderful things about the Tileshop. They were so very friendly and helpful and had a great selection of tiles on sale. I was in there for a long time in the throws of homeowner indecision re: the design of a new kitchen counter for my beloved Berkeley brownshingle house. I had the good fortune to have Omid helping me. He had great advice while at the same time respect for my aesthetic. I was not going to be a big sale, it was just a small 21 square foot project, but he treated me with respect and kindness. I love Tileshop. I did a big DIY tiling project, and it turns out that I'm not the best square footage estimator in the world, so I ended up having to go there again and again to buy stuff. I love a tile shop that has stock!! If I had special-ordered at a regular tile store, it would have been a disaster. The only other places that stock are places like Home Depot, and then you're stuck with a very limited selection of low-end tile. Tileshop has a nice selection and nice staff. Plus, the pricing is very good in general, and for their sale items, it's crazy-good. read more
