DA BEST company to get rocks, soils, mulches, barks... from. The customer services, from the front desk to the manager to the workers, everyone was extremely friendly and helpful. There were always someone answering the phone calls and they open 7 days a week which is a super huge bonus. They have so many beautiful rock products to choose from. My husband found this business a while back and we ordered all of the rocks for our yard. A couple days ago, we just ordered 30 yards of mulches and they should be delivered tomorrow. I stopped by the business to make sure I got the correct stuff and the wonderful ladies who helped with the orders and the manager were super nice! I also got some small Mexican gravels to fill in our walkway and they have enhanced our curl appeal. I rented two concrete mixers. both yard in half and in each mixers they shorten me at least a half of yard. every time I go there they always short me. I try to get some type of refund and all they do it blame it on the calibration of the concrete mixer. the manager witch she never came out to talk to me in person gave me a half yard on concrete for free but they shorten me on the half yard. after that I decide never to go there again worse place to rent a mixer. read more

I really wanted to support local businesses rather than Home Depot, but the customer service here is terrible and the quality of their materials is awful. I've tried to buy from this place several times, and this was the last straw. I bought two different types of weed fabric from them. One worked great and the other didn't work at all. Terrible customer service. The only reason I bought anything from them is because the place with helpful people didn't have the stepping stones I wanted. They broke one of the stepping stones when they loaded it for me. I didn't notice until the landscaping was done and we started to put the stepping stones in. The store would only give a partial refund. They will not get my business again. The people are not helpful or friendly, and their return policy stinks. read more

I purchase two big rocks and tons of pebbles from here. Everything was good until we realized the rock delivered didn't go well with our landscaping. I asked if I can return it. They say I can return but no refund and I also have to pay a pick up fee. I pay $85 for pic up fee and was told they will pick up from the front yard. This is for my two fiat visits in the same day. The first visit was 5 stars plus because of the following. Open on Sunday! Greeted by a very nice young man, eager to fulfill my our needs. My wife browsed and selected the rocks she wanted. I self served myself to the rocks, filling the bag the young man has given us. We weren't real sure how much we needed so we took what we thought was enough. I went to the office and was greeted by a woman with a very sweet personality. I payed for the material and off we went. I told my wife that they deserve 5 stars. What a fantastic experience! She agreed! We returned home and saw we were short about double the first load. I couldn't wait to get back. I drove back, 20 miles or so one way. The young man who was so friendly and treated us with respect was replaced by an agitated older man who made me feel unwelcome immediately. Told me to move my truck like he was my boss, with bad manors. I explained over and over that I wanted 800 pounds of the same rock. So I put three large rocks (same price per as the smaller version) because my wife liked them. He had me talk to another guy, medium friendly and kept saying, ok, 1 ton. I tried to explain that one ton was too much. The mean guy kept angrily commanding me move my truck although earlier in the day it was fine. I wanted to be sure I didn't get too much but I HAD to move my truck. Ok, I moved my truck. He comes to the scale and announces he has 1,200 pounds. Now here we are. I am NOT taking home an extra 400 pounds. Now I engage the same sweet office woman I had earlier in the day. I stared explaining the difficulty I was having with this angry guy. She immediately apologized and of course I accepted immediately! You know, she saved my experience by listening, caring, and then, having the angry man make it right. Cool right? Well, angry man got angrier because now he had to offload 400 pounds of the same rocks he just bagged. We've all made mistakes. My mom always said, "sometimes we get spammed and sometimes we spank ourselves " I hear him start the forklift, grind into gear and spin the tires. Great. Dude loves me. I went to the truck thinking he surely wasn't going to hustle. I was wondering how I would take 400 pounds of rock out of that bag and wondered how he was doing it. I didn't care. I just wanted 800 pounds, plus or minus, go home, and complete the job my wife had needed my help with. Remember the three larger rocks I told you about? They weren't in the bag. It was the that I realized exactly how he did it. He emptied the entire bag and refilled it minus the three rocks with 800 pounds. My bad for not getting enough the first time. Was a five star the fist visit. Second visit featured someone who lacks customer service skills, exhibits negative body language, just a negotiable vibe AND should be happier he even has a job with the poor attitude he possesses. Makes it tough when you must tell it like it is. Makes it tough to go back when you have that kind of experience. That one guy kind of ruined it for me. Still get three stars based on everything else. Five stars for the woman at the counter. She's clearly the star of the show! 5 stars for the selection. 0 stars for the angry man. read more

i don't know if i've ever seen a review site with such a strange skew -- primarily 5 star and 1 star ones. the main purpose of my "review" is to question the reviewers. heck, the staff is incredibly polite, helpful, and patient every time i go (at least a dozen times). i've worked with different members of the indoor and outdoor staff at various times of day. i've always received the same consistent help and found the quality and choice of products to be everything i want. i must say that i pick everything myself. i don't have deliveries made because, you're obviously going to get randomness in the selection because not every piece is perfect. so, let me ask the 1 star reviewers this: what are you doing in your conduct to receive what you consider to be such terrible quality service. any chance it could be unreasonable expectations or a condescending attitude on your part? ask yourself this...how could so many people have splendid experiences, yet, you're on here complaining and whining. read more

I ordered 4 cubic yards of bulk lava rock but I find that 1/2 the pile is contaminated with sand. I went back to complain but they only wanted to give me a 10% discount on subsequent purchases. We ordered Belgard Pavers here. We were promised to get our shipment this a.m. We called them again this morning to make sure that they would deliver as we have hired people to do the job. They assured us that shipment will be delivered between 9-10 a.m. We waited and waited. Nothing was delivered. We tried calling them for several hours. No one was answered the phone. We emailed them. Finally, around 2:30 p.m. they called us and said they can't deliver for next two days. What kind of customer service is that? Who's going to pay us for the people we have hired to do the work? This company has been reliable year after year! Over the last 10 years, I've ordered many truck loads of soil, rock and mulch. The pricing is excellent even with the delivery fees to Oakland or Orinda. With 3-4 days advanced notice, they were able to deliver to match my landscaping timing and material needs. At the time of ordering, they give me a delivery day and window. I call the morning of delivery to confirm and get specifics about deivery time. The driver has always called enroute to give me a heads up 5-10 minutes before arrival. The driver was patient and skilled as I laid tarp on the driveway pavers and was careful not to hit my plastered driveway walls. I am very pleased with their service after all these years. I loved going to this place. We just sold our place in Oakland and I went to Acapulco Rock and Soil for all the landscaping materials, it turned out amazing. I've always loved their materials. It is clearly a family business. Most of the employees seemed uninterested to be there but, I did learn to deal with them. Which I realize is not a great business model. I attempted to go somewhere else because I didn't like the attitudes but, found out that American Rock and Soil was worse .... way worse. All in all I went to Acapulco for about 8 years and was very happy with the selection and their location. Maybe when the kids with get old enough to realize they need to get into what they are doing. Stopped by at the recommendation of someone else shopping at Home Depot. Great prices, great customer service. They explained and helped us figure out how much wood chip would fit in the pick up and how much we needed based on measurements. The guys in the yard are polite, hard working, and also gave recommendations and always had a smile. Will definitely come back here for future projects. The wood chips smell fresh and made the backyard smell great! You can smell and feel the moisture in the product, unlike the stuff that is stale and broken-down at big box stores - Home Depot, etc. read more

I've been getting my soil from American Soil for over 20 years, but I would have to wait a week for a delivery so decided to give Acapulco Rock & Soil a try, which I very much regret. I have two new 4 by 8 raised beds, one filled with an American Soil product, the other with Acapulco's Super Blend. The former bed is thriving while the Acapulco bed is not. I have peas, peppers, tomatoes, zinnias and squash, and all are dying except the zinnias. The difference between the two soils is astounding. The Acapulco soil is dry looking even after I've watered and has a very high percentage of large rocks, a lot of sand, and not much of anything that looks like healthy soil. At this point I am considering pulling all the plants out, heavily amending the soil, and starting over. Their Green Compost is also inferior to American Soil's product, so in regard to ARS being cheaper, you definitely get what you pay for. It's also worth noting that the delivery person dumped a quarter of the 3 yard load onto my neighbor's lawn, not in my driveway, and left a very large oil slick on our sidewalk. read more

Okay I will start by saying everyone that works here is very friendly. However I have had some serious problems! First of all they are extremely disorganized The product Z compost is basically pure cow manure that is not fully decomposed. That means not only does it stink it will also burn your plants And even kill your garden because it's still hot So I tried the grape seed compost SAME ISSUE then I tried planting mix and even though it was a blend of different materials it was also hot! Another major issue- as a landscaping professional at this point in my career, I can look at a pile and tell immediately about how many yards are there. This company, when delivering, has brought me a pile that looks like about 3 or 4 yards when I ordered ten!! And this has happened multiple times. I will be taking my business elsewhere. read more

This is a great place to get landscaping material. Friendly staff, great selection, fair prices. BUT buyer beware: I have to warn you about one of the products: The Z Compost -- one of their three compost products -- does not tell you in the product description on the website that it smells like absolute $#!&. I don't know what it's made from, as the website just describes Z Compost as: "Organic materials review institute certified for organic gardens. This rich mix of plant compost and wood mulch can be blended at a rate of 30% to 50% by volume." The womanon the phone said it was also ok to just plant straight into it and a lot of organic home gardeners do. I don't think it's based on plant compost since it smells 100000% like straight poop. Maybe it's cow or horse dung? It's so embarrassing to hear strangers who walk past our front yard exclaim, "Ew, it smells like doo doo over here! Why does it smell so bad?" I thought the smell would die down but the smell has hardly dissipated after about 2 months. We sheet mulched our entire front yard, and opted to use Z Compost instead of regular fill dirt, so that the plants would get an extra boost of vitamins. Bad idea for two reasons: A) No compost I've ever used in my 15 years as a master gardener has ever smelled this bad. The smell has hardly dissipated after a couple months of being out in the sun, regular watering, plus being covered with nice-smelling cedar mulch. B) Strangely, about half of the plants we planted into the Z Compost are not growing AT ALL. These were all rigorous starts ordered from Annie's Annuals at the exact same time. A few plants have grown well but more than half of them are not thriving in this bedding material. Before you go blaming that on Annies Annuals or the care, I will also say that nearly *all* of the plants (starts and seeds) that we planted into Z Compost in POTS have all failed to thrive. Some were growing well in other mixes then stopped growing *once put into the Z Compost mix*. Some grew a couple inches in it, extremely slowly, then stopped. It's bizarre, I've never seen anything like it. it's almost like there's something in this Z Compost mix that prevents plants from thriving and only the most rigorous and hardy plants can manage to grow well in it. It doesn't absorb water well, the water frequently beads up on it then rolls off. Aside from the epic fail we had with using Z Compost to landscape our entire front yard and multiple pots, everything else we've ever gotten from Acapulco has been great. Flagstone pavers, pebbles, gravel, decomposed granite, etc. I won't go back to them for planting mixes again though, not after the issues with the stinky AF and bad-for-plants-? Z Compost. read more
