Wow. Have t been here in awhile. Very organized, well stocked, good pricing, and great service! Some prices were cheaper than Home Depot and in smaller quantity package and that is what I wanted. I think best service for hardware store in area. read more

Olivers in the best. The exceptional, kind and knowledgeable staff is incredible, and the sheer amount of inventory they somehow keep inside this store is mind boggling. Everything from little garden do-dads to real tools and hardware. Highly recommend them. If you aren't sure if they have what you want, give them a call and more times than not, I assure you they will stock what you are looking for! read more

There are hardware stores... and then there is Oliver's Hardware. From the moment you walk in, you don't feel like a customer--you feel like you belong. It's the kind of place where people know your name, remember what you came in for last time, and genuinely care about helping you get it right. Garth is a rare gem. Kind, deeply knowledgeable, and patient in a way that feels almost old-fashioned. He doesn't just "work there"--he treats every interaction as if this were his own business. You can tell he takes pride in making sure you leave confident, not confused. In a world of rushed service and indifference, Garth stands out as someone who truly respects people. And then there's Alice--an absolute force of warmth and personality. Friendly, engaging, and effortlessly entertaining, she has that rare gift of making people open up and feel seen. There's something magnetic about her presence. Don't be surprised if one day you see her hosting her own show--she has that unmistakable "Oprah of the town" energy. People don't just come in for hardware... they come in for Alice. Oliver's Hardware is not just a store--it's an experience. It's community. It's human connection at its best. If you're tired of being treated like a transaction, go there. You'll understand immediately why it's so special. read more

How lovely to walk into a hardware store and have multiple knowledgeable people eager to help you. It's like the old days (says this gen x'er with crunchy knees) where you have questions and can talk to a human being to get answers. First, the woman at the front counter is fabulous. She referred me to Garth to locate the correct 'springs' for a broken toaster oven door. I had the spring specs but Garth said if you bring it in I can give it a look. Next day, I did just that. Toaster oven door now works! Above & beyond. Old school customer service and just genuine kindness. I live 1 1/2 miles from Home Depot. No way in heck they would have done this. So worth the schlep to El Sobrante. I would give 10 stars if I could. read more

pricing is reasonable, products are good, and actually the advice is worth more than the products you buy. Staff is knowlable and honest, not just in product selection, but in application. It takes more time to buy the wrong product at home depot and to get the right solution at Olivers. read more

The ownership here really goes out of their way to assist you with whatever you need. The store is massively bigger than it appears on the outside (like a real life tardis!) so don't think for a minute they don't have a wide selection of options for your project. P.S LOVE the new awning! read more

The people at Oliver's Hardware are the best! You never have to wonder around looking for something like you do at the big box stores, you just have to ask, and there is always someone to ask! I went there to buy a couple bags of stove pellets last week, went to the counter and paid for them, and next thing I knew there was a guy with a wheel barrow who gets the bags, wheels them out to my car and loads them in the back. I highly recommend this business! read more

Small tucked away hardware store with limited selection but have enough to find what you need. The staff are super helpful and can find one at every corner. I've had to come here various times for small Knick knacks house projects or fixing and they had everything I needed and can easily find compared to going to Home Depot. They have a small parking lot but you can always find parking. I would highly recommend just based on the friendly and sweet staff working there. read more

This is a fine local hardware store that has everything you need and friendly staff immediately ready to help you find it. To all the folks complaining that the prices are higher than Home Depot, you get what you pay for. Good luck getting parked then wandering around endless isles looking for anyone who might help you. Those who write negative reviews because of that are the reason local business all over the country are going dark. Then what do you have? An endless boring sameness. This is a great store. Shop here. read more

The key that I went to duplicate doesn't work and is thicker than the original key. Also had a old male worker follow me like I was gonna rob the something, and kept looking over my shoulder. And when I was paying the same worker kept checking the bill like it was fake , giving dirty looks . Do not recommend this place read more

Absolutely outstanding customer service. The employees at this location are beyond helpful and made my shopping experience easy and quick. Everything on my list they were able to help me find. I will be a return customer and make sure this will be my go to location. read more

Great service again today. I have to say after working in several companies - and from walking into countless - if an employee is comfortable and happy they sometimes sing while working. In this store I heard a beautiful voice singing. I'm not asking for singing. Just an observation of how seemingly everything feels alright here. read more

Even though it isn't very large, Oliver's Hardware reminds me so much of the hardware store I went to with my father so many years ago, I want to think of reasons to stop here. I read that the store has been in the Oliver family since 1943. The store is bigger than it appears from the outside. They carry everything I need when I go a hardware store. The people working here are helpful and friendly. I'm sure if I had a question they could answer it for me. So, how do I rate a hardware store? Well for me it is 5-stars all the way: Old fashion charm that satisfies my memories of childhood hardware stores, and that also meets my current needs for nails and light bulbs read more

Word on NextDoor is that Oliver's Hardware has been sold. The last time I was there a earlier this month (Aug, 2020) a couple of the old time staff seemed a little distracted or something. The guy who wrote abt the bad key-cutting experience made me think of that. Could be the most senior employees knew that change was coming. I hope the new ownership keeps all those excellent, knowledgeable staff members on board. read more

AMAZING!!!! I'm so excited this will be my go to hardware store since we just moved to El Sobrante. It has a warm cozy feeling like walking into their home. Staff is extremely friendly and helpful....don't run across that so much anymore. FYI: Closes at 7pm Monday thru Friday......not 8pm. I'm attaching picture of store hours even though it's a bit blurry it's readable. So y'all instead of wasting your time going to the big box store stop on by Oliver's Ace Hardware Store. I have been a long time devoted customer of this Ace. It's close to home and I want to support a local shop. I went to Ace to get paint, which I buy often. Now I have spent thousands of dollars here because I own my own business. I had an exchange because I bought the wrong item. They told me I can not exchange the item for the correct one. Now remember I go there all the time and the girl that was there saw me buy it. Then I ask, can you make some paint? Ummm, no I have some customers in front of you. What? No! how about sure, let me take care of some customers first. Learn some service, or just to be nice. So I left the store and I vow to never go there again. This was not the first incident but they know me there and I go there often. Never again! read more

Wonderful and helpful staff. DIY projects are always stressful, but the staff here knows what they are talking about, and if they don't, they'll find someone who does. Prices are a little higher than Home Depot but it's worth it for the knowledgeable staff and not having to run around looking for help, waiting for help to arrive and get pestered by various salesmen trying to sell you a remodeling kitchen or solar panels. Since OSH fired all their good people and replaced them with no help greeters, this is becoming my Go-To Harware store. read more

Whoever provides the customer service here must have called in sick today. I do not enjoy getting on yelp and giving bad reviews because the interactions aren't fun for me as a customer. From someone who has many years of hardware and key experience I hope the management of this store can read this review and it help provide some insight. I had three house keys made today and only one worked. Now I know from experience that there is a chance a key wont work first try when getting duplicated. When I looked at the keys I realize they weren't even buffed. I go back to the store and tell the associate. She tells me she has been a locksmith for twenty years! That they keys may not have been buffed to my specifications! AT THIS MOMENT PLEASE PAUSE AND RE-READ THE LAST TWO SENTENCES. The only specifications of buffing a key I have is for them to work! I don't know what kind of locksmith doesn't buff house key duplications. This worker would make me quit if I worked here. She rushed through cutting my keys the first time and didn't even apologize when I came back. The proper way to handle this interaction from the employee should be, "I apologize that happened let me take care of that for you." I understand you cant teach an old dog new tricks but I hope management can tell this lady her shitty attitude only turns business away. Ended up fixing the workers mistake of the keys in my shop, I would have done it the first time to not go back and see this lady, but one of the keys that didn't work was to my shop. I wont be going back here and will tell others to avoid. Its a shame a local hardware store, the last small Ace in the area acts this way. read more

This review concerns customer service when buying propane. I have been buying propane at Oliver's Ace Hardware for probably twenty years or more. I won't be going back again, ever. To get a propane tank refilled at OAH, you drive to the far end of their building. There is a button for a buzzer there labeled "Ring for Propane." I recall a number of years ago that buzzer was broken, and stayed that way for more than a year as I recall, but it's working now. I got to the store just before 3 PM on a Wednesday. I got out of my car, pushed the propane button, and got back in my car. After about six minutes with no one coming out, I went back up and rang it again. About five minutes later, another guy arrived wanting propane. I told him I had been there for at least ten minutes, rung the buzzer twice, and that no one had come out. So he went in to find out when someone would be there to fill our propane tanks. A minute or so later, he came back out saying that they were just too busy to have anyone come out and fill propane tanks. So I had wasted fifteen minutes - God knows how long I would have had to wait before either leaving in frustration or going in myself. If they weren't able to spare anyone to fill propane tanks, they should have put a sign over the buzzer so stating. And in case anyone from OAH tries to defend this lack of very reasonable customer service, there's one more thing: As I was sitting there, I watched one of their employees on the other side of the fence throwing boxes into a dumpster. If they were so very busy, then why was this guy doing busy work? They could have easily had him come out and explain they couldn't fill tanks today, and put up a sign so stating, rather than leaving me sitting there. I have had some other bad experiences with them, but this one took the cake. I will never go back there. There is a Mobil station on San Pablo near the freeway that refills propane tanks, as does the Arco station (cash only for them). So Oliver's is no longer an option. read more

Double the price for lifesaving equipment when disaster hits. Good job! Well, people always say supply and demand until you need some stuff for your own health, your kids' health, your 76 years old mother's health. The Butte county fire smoke has been hovering over bay area for a while and all family members coughing nonstop, including my daughter and mother. You are like, yes, I need to buy some masks. Homedepot? All run out. Google map shows me this store. I bought a box of 20 pk N95 masks for a good $49.8 while on Ace Harware website it shows $22.99. I had no choice but to pay for that. Family members' health depends on it. What is not clear to me is that: Is it a company policy of Ace Hardware to increase the price when disasters happen and human being's lives are in danger? I know the famous saying "supply and demand" and it is pure business. Maybe that's the business model Ace Hardware store is advocating, at least this store. read more

Wish could give option of "No Stars." Ordered a product online on 6/4, with web showing "item in stock." Received email 2 days later that order was processed and shipped. We says items normally ship within 1-2 business days, so it was right on par. I wrote an email on 6/10 asking for a tracking order or a estimate delivery date. Quickly received an email of "Order canceled. Not in stock." Were they just hoping I forgot I ordered something? Were they never going to update this order unless I wrote an email? I wrote another email asking questions, but all's I get back is a Computer Generated response that the Order was cancelled. People on the East Coast don't do business like this. Shady. read more

You would be surprised to see how big the store is. From the outside, it looks small but you can find so much stuff. I have found paint, a great jig saw cutting machine, paint for parking lot lines, and a cheap machine that goes with the inverted can, a great tool set for the price, and a great black and decker drill set. Furthermore, there is foam to seal holes where mice and rats can go through. Overall, the team members there have been very friendly and helpful. They have been patient and made useful suggestions. The ladies who work at the front are also friendly and very helpful. I would say the only one negative experience was with one lady who acted like she was the boss one time and was not very patient and directed her team members to do something, but without asking please. I am glad i have not seen her again, lol. read more

Extremely polite and helpful...AND they speak English (the kind you can readily understand)! I usually have only a vague idea of what I want/need or think I want/need when entering a hardware store. Nothing pushy, just great assistance...definitely will be going back here rather than wasting my time elsewhere and risking a language barrier... read more

Slightly overpriced but considering the lack of hardware stores around, this will do. Staff is always willing to help and knowledgeable. Bought a tool that didn't work but honored the return. 3* because Deb wanted to make sure the item was indeed purchased from their store, which also implies the customer was lying. In the world of customer service, the customer is ALWAYS right no matter how wrong they are, however, abusers should be banned. After implying that I didn't appreciate her actions implying that I was a liar, Deb became rude. Would I go back? Only if I was desperate. read more

No one EVER seems to know where anything is. And while seeming to have plenty of inventory, most of it is impossible to see. Nails for a nail gun? They didn't know. But we found them in 30 seconds. The employee seemed surprised. Today I called to ask about a drywall product. The second person who answered the phone fully admitted to not knowing much about drywall... And I guess they don't carry Fast Set 20. I would love to support this store because it's the closest to us, and seems like a super neighborhood friendly place, but this is easily the 4th disappointing experience. Alrightly then! We love the group of people that work at Oliver's Harware! Alice, their front line gal who we deal with all the time... nobody is more friendly and informed than this gal. Everyone is really friendly and we like scooting over to this store to pick up the things we could buy elsewhere and yet, it's like going to visit family here.
