I was in Berkeley with some time to kill and also have been searching for a particular gas fitting so I hoofed it down there to take a look. I have seen the store front multiple times driving down Ashby. The main entrance is around back. Upon entering it reminds me of Orchard Supply Hardware. Back in the day when I was farming and owned rentals I think I almost lived at OSH. The other one. It was nice to cruze around a well laid out hardware store with just about anything you'll need. I was looking for a brass gas fitting and there was drawer for it but sold out. Popular item I guess. Even with that it's a great hardware store. Wide aisles and plenty of items. There are times I could just drive the extra few miles to go here instead of Home Outhouse. read more

Better service than Home Depot but that comes with higher prices. Main problem is the layout of the store. Very difficult to know which aisle items are on and even if the helpful staff tell you it is impossible to know how to get to a particular aisle because the signs are not visible from the front of the store. read more

Devon, the part time employee is very thoughtful, attentive and helpful. I broke one of the bolt when I was servicing an EV charger on the site of the store, the employee Devon helped me in finding the right tool and the right ways to extract the broken bolt( he even come with me to understand the issue). He just saved my day, I couldn't finish the job without his help! This is only a few times when I fell the tools are much valuable than the price, this all thanks to Devon!!! Having an employee like Devon is a big edge for the store, I will always want to go to a store if I know there is a guy can understand my needs and helped me through the way out. I came here to get one thing and it took a long time to find it. I wanted a fine strainer for my bathroom sink. It would have been great if I'd have seen an employee, but I felt like I was the only one working there. Not fun, not good. They did have a sale on something that I wanted and that was good. A lot of product is not priced. The cashier said they were redoing that section, but there was no one there working the section. I found unpriced product throughout the store. How am I supposed to buy something if I don't know the price. Bad standards. I did buy a Halloween sale item for 75% off $2.99 but the register gave the incorrect price of $1.25. The cashier said that was the correct price, 50 cents off. The manager training this person was there the whole time and started arguing that the register is correct. Service is mixed: in my 3 most recent visits to OSH on Ashby Ave., I encountered 2 employees who were thoughtful, attentive and helpful, and 2 employees who were rude and indifferent. Helpful employee: I went to OSH to buy a shelf unit a few weeks ago. The employee who assisted me was a young man who was attentive and helpful. He made eye contact and gave me clear directions to the aisle where I could find the item. A minute or so later, he came to where I was, listened to me describe in more detail what I was looking for, then he helped me look for it. It turned out OSH was not carrying the type of unit I needed, at least not at this time. Still, I appreciated the employee's thoughtful assistance. Unhelpful employee: a few weeks ago, I was looking for a nozzle/spout for a watering can. I had already found the product on Amazon. But, instead, I decided to take my spoutless watering can to OSH on Ashby Ave to see if, perhaps, they carry nozzle/spouts that I could actually touch to see if it would fit the watering can. After looking around and not finding nozzle/spouts for watering cans, I decided to ask an employee if they sell this. The employee, a young man, was kneeling on the floor. He was in the middle of stocking something on a low shelf. I said "Hello, excuse me, I have a question." No response. I thought he hadn't heard me, so I repeated myself. Still no reply. Then I said it again. This time he said, in a neutral tone, without looking at me, continuing with his task, "Yeah?" I asked if OSH carries this item. Without looking at me, the employee said, "No. I don't even know where you'd get that kind of thing." I thought to myself, by way of reply, "Amazon." But instead, I just said "thank you" and left. I kid you not, the employee never looked at me. On reflection, I wondered if the he heard me the first time and had intentionally ignored me, hoping I would go away. Helpful and unhelpful employees: Today, I went to OSH to look for parts for my drip irrigation system. I was looking for a shopping basket. After finding none, I approached the cashier, a young woman. She was looking downward. There was no line, no one around. I approached her and asked, "Hello, could you tell me where are your shopping baskets?" She looked up slowly, then looked down, mumbled something I didn't understand, and pointed outside. I figured she meant the shopping baskets are outside next to the entrance. So I walked outside, only to find shopping carts. I went back to the cashier and said that I didn't see the shopping baskets. Again, she looked at me slowly, then looked down, mumbled something that I couldn't understand, then pointed at a stack of white plastic buckets in front of her counter, which I happened to be standing next to. The white buckets had "OSH" printed on them. I asked, "Oh, these are the shopping baskets?" She didn't nod or say anything. So I figured these must be the shopping baskets and took one. I felt a bit frustrated that she didn't point to the buckets in the first place; and I felt looked down on because when I asked for confirmation, she didn't say anything or even nod. The reason why I asked for confirmation is because she hadn't pointed to the buckets in the first place, and because in most stores, shopping baskets are actually baskets, not plastic buckets. I proceeded to shop, but I did not find what I was looking for. I returned the shopping bucket and proceeded to leave, whereupon I passed another employee. Deciding to give it another shot, I asked the employee, a middle-aged gentleman, if OSH carries this product. The fellow made direct eye contact, smiled, and politely affirmed in a friendly tone of voice, with a slight note of apology, that if I don't see the item on the shelf, OSH is not carrying it at the moment. He sustained friendly eye contact throughout our brief exchange. My overall point is that, although I might not find what I am looking for, it is the attitude of staff that makes me return, or not, in the future. Also, "little" things like eye contact, tone of voice, and providing information (or not) speak volumes. To those two employees who were helpful: I appreciate your values, both personal and professional, that led you to be helpful and to treat me with respect. It is you two, and employees like you, on whom I will reflect when I am trying to decide what hardware store to go to. To the employees who, I believe, were intentionally rude: your intention to belittle the customer comes across loud and clear. Your rudeness speaks volumes about who you are as a paid employee and as a person. I will warn other customers, and warn OSH management, by writing this review. This OSH location has a good selection so it is worth going there. Just know that customer service is a coin toss. read more

I had a great experience here recently. I needed to burn some keys for Christmas presents. I was walking down the aisle to the key area, when an employee asked 'Can I help you with anything?' I was surprised someone was asking me that in a hardware store. I told him I would like to duplicate some keys, and he said "I can help you with that for sure". The employee helped me cut my keys and made conversation while we were waiting for the machine to cut them, and in the key-cut area another employee was repairing a wheelbarrow and making jokes. It was welcoming and lovely, they even gave me instructions on how to check out (some keys had sticker barcodes & other keys needed me to bring along the barcode tags to check out). The cashier was very kind as well. I'll definitely be coming back. It's so convenient, right across from the grocery store! Lovely staff. read more

Great hardware (nuts and bolts) selection. Aside from avoiding the Home Despot in Emeryville which is just ... no ..... the reason why OSH is my go-to store is for the hardware section. I'm a hobbyist/DIY/hacker and so I'm constantly making and fixing things (and breaking them again). This requires a wide selection of random nuts and bolts in everything metric and SAE and beyond. The big box stores have shrunk their nutsnbolts selection to a tiny portion of an aisle. Not so OSH, you get four gorgeous aisles of every variation of nut, bolt, pin, and beyond that you could imagine. Need a stainless steel SHCS? Yup. Need Grade 8? Yup. That the store is usually empty which means parking is available up front and there's rarely a line at the register is an additional bonus -- although it does make me worried about the long-term financial stability of this place. Review for the garden area only: My husband is the plant enthusiast, and they were well stocked in that area. They have a large variety of pots and a decent selection of fruit trees for a chain. We purchased a satsuma mandarin semi-dwarf. The price was cheaper than BHN, where we picked up a dwarf nectarine tree. Both locations have trees from Dave Wilson nursery. This store is kind of a tucked-away gem. Parking is safe and abundant, it's never too busy, customer check out is fast, and staff always has time to help out (and they often check on you to see if you need help). If you're needing to go to Home Depot, pause and ask yourself if you can get it here at OSH. This morning Steve took tons of time to figure out what hex nut I needed for my truck. Outdoor Supply Hardware is a medium-sized hardware, home improvement, and gardening supplies store. It's about 1/3 the size of a standard Home Depot or Lowes, but still has 90% of the selection for most non-contractor needs. It's easy to park at this location and is rarely busy with no lines. The staff is very friendly and the prices are competitive.  My favorite part about this Outdoor Supply Hardware location is the gardening and plant section. They have a vast selection of plants, pots, fertilizers, soil, mulch, and more. All the bagged soils and mulch are stored in front of the store right in the parking lot, so it's convenient when loading. Anything you need for your garden or backyard project is here! I've noticed they receive vegetable and fruit starters much earlier than other nurseries in the area. The actual size of the starters is impressive and the pricing is unbeatable on certain plants. The strawberry starters work out to be $1.50 each with the 6 pack, which is the cheapest I've ever seen at any retail location in the Bay Area. read more

This spot took over Orchard Supply and although it's a new company, it's same. Same layout, pretty much same products, so if you were familiar and enjoyed that experience, you'll like this one! Plenty of parking and the few times I've stopped in, it's been rarely empty. I went during COVID times and for sure lack of hand sanitizer at the door which I would have liked to see. It didn't seem as if they were diligent in sanitizing the carts, so there was that. I went for garden supplies and they have all your miracle gro and pest sprays. They have a basic selection of herbs and tomato's, as well as annuals and some perennials. I picked up a few but as most of their plants were already in bloom I didn't want to load up on somewhat spent plants. Prices were all reasonable. People seem to go there for soil and mulch which I'll do in the future! Not your boutique experience, but gets the job done. Overall, your Home Depot style garden center experience at a much more convenient and less busy place. read more

I know like most of the residents out here, I was anxiously awaiting their opening. My husband and I have been in now at least 4 times. All the employees we encountered have been friendly- however they seem to be greatly lacking in training. This store is great if you just need to run in quickly and grab something. But if you have a question, or need help with something- better luck going to another store. We needed to get wire cut to string our blackberries on. My husband talked to 2 employees trying to get the wire cut- the employees weren't trained on the machine. I had to look away, I was afraid there would be an injury. The employee didn't want to read the directions, just kept yanking on knobs and pulling the cable wire. The same seemed to be true in the plant section- no one had any plant knowledge. Plus- with Sloat right across the street, we just go there. We had to come in for a return- it took 3 employees to figure out where that happens. Finally it was decided we stand in the line with all the other people who are buying things. The line had about 6 people in it. Many employees were milling around, and only 1 person was working the register. So after anxiously awaiting their opening- we are still very happy with Ace and Sloat. It's a toss up depending on the day if we want to deal with nice, but incompetent people here or the crowds at Home Depot Still plenty of parking in the lot. Let's keep this new alternative to Home Despot and the internet. I was sad to hear of the old Orchard Supply Hardware folding. I mainly bought from the nursery, but also tools, and building supplies. I'm happy at least some of the old OSH came back. The new Outdoor Supply Hardware has a very clean store. Nice and helpful employees. Lots of parking. Store wasn't crowded. We agree with others that it is a much pleasanter experience than Home Despot. The Ashby store in Berkeley has less stock than the old Orchard Supply Hardware. Then again most retail suffers from less stock and less choice in the Pandemic, lockdown, and supply chain shortages. It would improve if the new OSH would imitate more of the old OSH - like using more of the dark green signature color, the original name, and bringing back a knowledgeable plant person and more varieties of plants to the nursery/ garden center. read more

Go elsewhere! Came in this morning to get some paint samples. After browsing the chips and waiting at the paint mixing desk for a bit I asked a cashier whether someone could help with some paints. Was told in an annoyed voice - "No paint today." I asked if I could come by later? Again the flat reply - "No paint today." I looked at the two other people in the checkout line - we were all incredulous. One of the customers said - "Um. So no one is available to help with paint today at all?" Cashier - "No. She's off today." After the customers in line gave me some recommendations for other paint stores I left. A minute later I realized I'd left without my pen so I went back inside. The cashier was talking to another employee CLEARLY trashing me for daring to ask about the paint service and being confused about the lack of service today. They realized I saw/heard them and they loudly shifted to another topic. I have shopped here for 15 years. Not anymore! read more

Seems like the old OSH. Cashier was friendly. Asked about some plants on a rack that all looked very dead. There was one in ok condition. She asked someone and was told they're half off. Half off for a very dead plant is a rip off but for the one I wanted seemed like a good price. When I brought it up, she asked someone else and he says, that plants not dying so full price. At least Lowes marks a plant down to 50 cents or a dollar if you're really just buying a plastic pot with dirt. read more

osh was recommended to repair my window screens. i dropped them off and was told i would be called in a couple of days. i had to call after 12 days and the person i spoke with did not know anything about my window screens. 3 days later i called to inquire about my screens and was very rudely told that they were ready. when i picked them up i complained about the delay and the rude customer service. i was offered 30% discount. i paid $100.00for repair of 3 window screens, when i talked with the friend who recommend osh, she said she only paid $80.00, the screens were the same size. i will never use osh for anything, i will go to home depot read more

I've only been able to reach them by phone one time. That was today. I asked about a product, and the person confirmed they have it, but didn't know the price. They said they couldn't get the price because they were the only cashier, and everyone else was doing inventory so "nobody had time" to check. I guess they figure I have time to drive 30 minutes round trip to check? I give 2 stars only because they tend to carry stuff not found at Home Depot. But even that has dwindled. Last time I went during their normal business hours and the outdoor garden area was locked. When I asked if I could get in, I was told they didn't have anyone back there. I was told this while there was an employee sitting in one of the floor display outdoor chairs talking to the cashier. Finally a manager came and let me in. Shouldn't have bothered because the plants looked really sad. I've asked before why nobody answers the phone, and was told it was because they didn't have enough staff and it was too busy. I have never seen more than 3 other customers in that store when I'm there, and nearly every time there are at least two employees in the front chatting. Not going to bother any more unless I happen to be right there. It's just not worth the hassle or attitude. I can't imagine this place is going to last. Even Home Depot has more responsive customer service, and HD has pretty much no customer service! read more

I love this store, I love the kind humans that work there, I love everything about it. After having challenges with Home Depot not fulfilling orders and going into the store to find that they don't mandate customers wear masks, thereby putting their employees at risk, I decided to find somewhere else to go. Outdoor Supply is fab. They had just about everything I needed, there were so many people ready to help, it wasn't super busy, everyone was wearing masks, and prices were super reasonable.
