The future here is unclear, as the local town wants nothing but more housing, and this site is in the crosshairs for "redevelopment". But for now they're open and a good place to go. FInally got an excuse to visit and walk around. Up and down all the aisles, and couldn't find what I was looking for, so I asked the clerk. He led me out to the one row I hadn't looked at, at the front on the register side. There was the Brasscraft replacement for the cruddy junk-metal bonnet nut that Delta inexplicably put in their otherwise OK bathroom faucets. Happy happy joy joy! True Value lists this BrassCraft part on-line, same $5.99 as on-line with 1 week shipping. Clearly marked with the Delta RP6060 number. BrassCraft's part is thicker and heavier duty than the junk-metal original, and fits a 27mm socket vs 15/16 or 31/32 inch tools. But also does fit the presumably inch dimension threads under the handle.. Old, old, school, as someone posted, not a lot of power tools, lumber or plants. Yep. I don't go to hardware stores for power tools, or lumber, I go for hardware, and hardware is what they're all about. One of the men who works here is truly rude, like leading-with-rude rude. First, as he breezed by, I asked him if they had any wood filler. He kept walking away from me, barked "No!" at me over his shoulder, and turned the corner. 10 minutes of walking around later, I found the wood filler and went to check out. As I walked up to the counter -- I was the only person in line, and I was moving at a normal human pace -- he glared at me, aggressively gesticulating with the "come on! hurry up!" hand motion, and then grabbed my items out of my hand. I can always count on the staff at Eastern Supply Hardware to have what I need, or find it for me. Pricies vary, but on the whole, the convenience beats out any price difference. And, I've been able to return something that doesn't fit, or exchange it for something that does. And if you aren't rude and demanding, you don't have to worry about someone swearing at you in Chinese -- really. The only downside is, they need a bigger store! But they can find things that you can't find anywhere else, and do it with exceptional speed. If you don't bring any cash this place does not work well because there's a five dollar minimum. All I needed was four screws that were worth $1.75 and it made me purchase something that I did not need. Granted I could've walked across the street and got money out but it's been very frustrating personally to try to finish a project that is been going on for more than 2 1/2 weeks so I need to get this done right away. The service was helpful but up until the end when I decided that I didn't need these items so I would like a refund for one of items that I had to purchase in order to get my only four screws worth $1.75. I don't know if people normally do this but I'm very upset because I didn't need that item but I needed to get it for these screws. and he wouldn't let me refund it and so I asked him if I purchased something else in the store and ended up not needing it could I bring it back and get a refund? and he said yes but not this particular item that I purchased just now. After breaking off a front door key and being locked out on a Sunday afternoon things were starting to look bleak. We had been directed to three other stores none of which could offer help. We found True value and were grateful that Elaine the owner seemed confident that she could be of assistance. After fabricating a new key the owner told us there was a 70% chance that the key would work. Because of this she insisted that she didn't want us to pay her anything. This is a review of two small family run business in Berkeley, CA. These business are not associated with each other but they solved a problem and had the parts that I needed. I needed a lamp socket with a rotary switch at the end. The Big Box store and other hardware stores did not have what I wanted. I went to Al Lasher's Electronics ( 1734 University Ave, Berkeley, CA 94703 ) on the chance they might have the part I wanted. Lahsers's have a lot of Electronic and Electrical "Stuff" but not the part that I wanted (we searched hard). Bob Lasher suggested that I try the True Value Eastern Supply (2900 Shattuck Ave Berkeley, CA 94705). I went into the store, showed the owner the part. "Yes, we have the part head down the aisle the the end and look on right." The exact lamp socket that I was looking for. This is a real Hardware Store with lots and lots of "Stuff." I always want this to be a great hardware store, because it's super convenient and the owners seem like good, decent, humble folks and there just aren't other options nearby. There's always parking right outside, and the absence of parking is reason enough to never go to Ace Hardware in downtown Berkeley at their new Milvia St. location. But this True Value on Shattuck always disappoints. Every time I come in, they don't have what I'm looking for, it ends up a waste of time, and I swear I'm not coming back again. "But it's so close and my lunch break is short so I'll just swing by." Foiled again! Ok THIS is the last time I come here. "But it's on the way home..." Rinse, repeat. It is run by three Chinese guys and English is not their first language, but Customer Service is! They rock. No matter what you ask for, they have it. This is thr traditional asian hardware store where there are hundreds of items tucked in nooks and crannies. If you go, just look up and look how much inventory is handing from the ceiling! Great hours, great prices, nice guys, local heros. Back to heating. 6" to 14" is in stock, starting collars, 90's, wyes, registers, boots, and even a plenum or two! This is all outside and in the back. Be patient, you need to rustle through many parts to get what you want, but they do have it and at good prices. I live in hardware stores. This is my #1 favorite. Years ago I avoided this place because it was so small and considerably more expensive than OSH, Ace, Home Depot, and other nearby alternatives. Fast forward and this place has saved my butt countless times. Somehow they have a little bit of everything. Keys? Yes. Do they make and repair screens? Yes they do! Shower drain strainers? Hilarious business model -- they cut two keys for me, one of which worked, the other of which clearly did not -- naturally, b/c I'm fussy I brought it back, saying, "I'm sorry, but this key doesn't work" -- he looks at me and says, "yes, I know", and promptly refunds my monies?? LOVE IT. I think it was around $2/key -- when not busy, they are quite quick, and the store has a small, but decently sized collection of hardware stuff. While the language barrier makes most English difficult to transact in this Chinese owned store, the crew sure know the language of electrical, gas, water, tools. You name it. I have asked dozens of trade specific info on all ranges of topics (renovating my house myself) and always get my answers plus other "contractor grade" advice that is worth the cost of the merchandise alone. I dont know why anyone goes to HomeDepot or other big box store. Except for lumber these guys have it all. For an added plus, the "Girls" (related) have their own store just up street on Telegraph just north of Ashby. I think it is called Telegraph hardware. Easy five stars too. read more

I love this place. It took me too long to give them a try because the exterior is less than inviting. Now I've seen the light: at this store, they focus on the interior. It's a tiny shop, but the diversity of items per square foot is off the charts. Everything I've gone there for, they've had: garden, plumbing, housewares, tools, and weatherproofing. It's the fastest shopping destination I know. There are always staff members waiting to help you find things, and because the shop is so cozy, you're never more than a twenty-second walk away from the item of your desires. You could seriously be in and out of the store in under two minutes. Plus, the prices are completely reasonable, even to a cheapskate like me. My housekey cost $1.39 to copy, compared to $2.99 from a slow, awful machine at OSH. read more

This hardware store is adorbs. They will sell you nails in bulk (I effing love bulk shit) which means if I want like 4 nails and 7 screws. NBD I can have that instead of buying more of each than I could possibly use in a small apartment. They cut glass, cut keys, will help you find things, unless I need some lumber, I never want to go to Home Depot again! Plus, they were open at 9am. I love the hardware store. Over the years I've been there 30 or 40 times, for everything from caulk to dimmer switches to tools to fridge lights bulbs, and so on. They've ALWAYS had what I'm looking for. At first glance the place can be very overwhelming. The shelves are as high as the ceiling and stocked full of every kind of hardware. The owners have organized the aisles by product type but it can still be hard to find something if you don't know where to look. This is where the owner/staff comes in. This is the best local hardware store. It should have been the first one we went to. We were looking for a replacement faucet for a bathtub/shower conversion, the kind that has a hole in the top for the pole which supports the circular shower curtain rail. We went to OSH, very tiny selection of faucets, then to Home Depot, which also did not have anything like that, in fact the employee did not seem to have heard of such a thing, then drove by Pastime, which had a huge line outside and we have not been successful at getting things there in the past, and then, last resort to this jam-packed old-school hardware store. He knew exactly what we wanted and reached up to a shelf behind the counter and produced one!! This is a store which looks like a treasure trove of things one might want. They cut car keys too. And, as someone else pointed out, they had large quantities of masks when you couldn't get them anywhere else. Refreshingly not big box. read more

Let me start off by saying, I really like the fact that this is a small owned business and loved coming here to get things I need because it is so close to my house. On Wednesday March, 4 2020, I came in to buy another hose for my kitchen sink which I had the box and wanted to buy the exact same one that I previously about two weeks ago. I asked one of the asian guys who was working there to help me look for it since he was not helping anyone or anyone was waiting for him to help. First he told me to go look for it myself but since I am not familiar with these items I asked him to come help me look for it. He came around from the cash register area and started saying vulgar words at me in Chinese. I told him it was not nice or appropriate to say those nasty comments to your customers and I told him I understood Chinese and he played dumb by say " who said those things?" I said loudly to him that you said those things when I asked you to help me. I will NEVER shop there again and will tell all my family, friends and people I know who are in construction to never shop there. I felt very uncomfortable by the language he used and discriminated against because I was a woman asking for help in a hardware store. read more

The workers are super nice and the price for a normal key copy is cheap. They were willing to make a special key for me and offered to fix it until the key works (just remember to keep your receipt). I had to visit several times but they did alter the key a couple of times. The only thing you have to keep in mind when making keys here is that you need to tell them exactly what you want and any problems with the key before they make a copy so that they won't mess up. The place may seem small but it has a LOT of things inside. So check their wares when you're there, maybe you'll find what you need. read more

This little neighborhood hardware store is the best. I've used it for years and most of the time they have what I want at a very good price. They know their stock and will come over to advise and help if you are uncertain about what to get. I just purchased wide foam weather stripping from them. Two other hardware stores only had narrow sizes and Home Depot would have it for p/u in a week, at $1.50 more than Eastern. I made a quick dash over here to get a screwdriver the other day so that I could replace the hard drive on my new laptop. Unfortunately the screw driver set I ended up with was poor quality and the Torx T6 I used stripped as soon as I tried to undo the screw! I came back expecting a big fuss, but these guys found a stronger screw driver for me and took back the entire set with the broken one without me even really asking.
