I've had two extremely disappointing experiences at Montclair Village Hardware, and after today, I won't be returning. The staff--especially the cashier at the front--has been consistently rude. He acts visibly annoyed whenever a customer asks for help finding something, and even during checkout he's combative and unfriendly. Someone with that attitude should not be working in customer service. I truly hope the owner pays closer attention to how customers are being treated, because this reflects poorly on the entire store. There are plenty of other hardware stores where customers are treated with respect, and I'll be taking my business elsewhere. read more

The name is a little misleading because it is not in Montclair but it used to be. This is the opposite of a big box store. It is a small town store. There is someone there who will help you. Maybe even someone you will recognize the next time you go in. Besides service, sometimes there is free parking (on the side of the building). If you park on the street--you pay. When I went in yesterday, besides having 3 keys made, I got a smile and some conversation. read more

Love this place! I'm right down the hill from Montclair Village Hardware store and enjoy supporting local small business. Recently went by there and saw that they expanded to the business location on the left of them. This means that others in the neighborhood are supporting them too. Keep it up neighbors!! The staff at Montclair Hardware is always incredibly helpful. I'm generally pretty dangerous with a tool in my hand but these guys have explained a task such as extracting a broken screw in language that even I can understand. I'm really surprised at comments about the staff being rude, personally I can't think of a single instance where anyone there has been less than helpful or unfriendly. This is the type of business that every neighborhood needs to remain vibrant and it is kind of a poster child for Shop Local. read more

Like previous customer comments, sales people are a hit or miss - a couple willing to help you and one that's incredibly rude. I came in about a month ago and asked a simple question and the sales person was probably the rudest person I've ever encountered at the store. I've been coming to this store for over 10 years. After this experience, I'd rather drive to Cole's in Rockridge. At least I'll have someone who's polite and willing to respond to questions, even if they don't know the answer to it. read more

I will not go here anymore and advise you do the same. Maybe they will change their ways. (1) They are expensive, far more than they need to be for the area. (2) The guy who has been there forever (skinny older guy) is super rude and very unpleasant to be around. (3) They have a good selection but seem to not be stocked or simply not stock a lot of basic ACE products. (4) This is not a good store to go to if you have construction and building knowledge. The expertise given by the staff feels like they are belittling you and assuming you know nothing about your own home. Rediscovered MVH after having lunch at Woodminster Cafe around the corner. The new / current location is larger than the original was in Montclair Village and parking is easier too! Staff is still friendly and knowledgeable. Not everything that you can find in one of the mega-stores (OSH / HD), but most of what you'd want and certainly a proximity advantage. I brought back a defective cell phone charger wire yesterday that I had purchased from them about a month ago. It was very identifiable because it was a kind of a material and color that only they sold. I also had purchased the identical charger wire about 6 months earlier, and it has worked perfectly. The guy employee insisted that I needed to have a receipt for this $6 item to exchange or refund. I said "who keeps the receipt for a $6 item?" I showed him exactly where it was when I picked it out of a clear plastic tray near the checkout area, and that it wasn't even in a package just a twist tie, and I said how would I know that it was there if I didn't purchase it from your store? It's interesting they don't even sell those chargers cords anymore. The guy was just being uncooperative, because he just didn't want to refund my money or offer a replacement because they no longer even sell those cell phone chargers. Or he was just a moron. I was so disgusted with him, I just tossed the practically new cell phone cord at him and said, "here, you keep it because I don't want garbage. And then I said I will never shop here ever, ever again." I also told him, "you recognized me. I come in here all the time" and then he looked at me and he said I don't know who you are. He was lying. Does he really think that I'm going to try to palm off a broken cell phone charger cord when it's exactly what they did sell, and now no longer sell? No one else sold this particular green braided cord. Like I said, I still have one from about 6 months earlier and it works fine. I have a hard time getting around right now and I am a disabled person in my mid 60s. I'm not willing to give this thing any more effort. But they treated me badly. Don't shop here. Small, convenient hardware store if you live in the area. If you need a particular nut, bolt, screw, hardware for sinks, Bona cleaning supplies or key made. They mostly likely can help you. They now gave a paint section that carries Kelly Moore paints which is a bonus. John who has been there for years can be irritable at times but everyone else is friendly & helpful. read more

But if I need advice, I don't want to go here and it sounds awful but one of the workers smelled very unclean so I don't really want to have him help me as it is unpleasant. Selection is limited which is ok if the customer service is amazing. I didn't find that to be the case, unfortunately, which is too bad because I live down the street. I had to pull teeth to get assistance and the guy was pretty short and clearly annoyed that I was asking him questions. The other staff members didn't seem too keen that I was there either. When we bought our home a decade ago, I leaned heavily on the Internet and the owner of this store, Eric, to figure out what I needed to do to fix things! Eric has continued to provide me great insight, suggestions, and referrals when needed. Everyone in this store is always kind, helpful, and thoughtful. We are fortunate to have an old fashioned proprietor-run hardware store like this. I was at first upset when they were forced out of their Montclair store after being there for so long, but now I actually prefer the new store location: it has free parking (woo hoo!) and the store is bigger so they have a larger inventory. Sure, I still need sometimes to go down to Osh on Ashby (I avoid the Home Despot in Emeryville like the plague!), but almost always Montclair Village Hardware has what I need and I do make a point to support this homegrown local shop whenever I can, especially after everything they have done to support me and our home. read more

I love this place -- it reminds me of the local hardware store near me when I was a kid. These guys know their stuff and if one employee doesn't have an answer the senior staff almost always does. I have never had a problems exchanging or returning items, and often they even help me come up with solutions when I want to hack a small home repair DIY solution. This is not a mega retailer; if you want to that go to Home Depot (which I only go to when I have to). But for everyday solutions to everyday hardware needs, these guys are great. It's a shame that they had to move out of Montclair Village, but I'm glad they found a way to stay nearby! read more

Tall white guy (manager) is rude. Shouldn't be shouting at an employee on how to handle customers without masks, especially while people are in the store. Do that during a meeting, not during business hours. The lady at the cash register was very kind. The tall manager with long hair rubbed me the wrong way. I just went back to get my masks and they were out. While I was waiting in line a woman walks in and collects her prepaid masks. I was in the store at 9:40 am and was told that they expect a delivery and to not show up before noon. They could have told me to prepay, like the lady who just picked them up, but no, they did not. That is not the customer service I would expect from a neighbor hood store. I will NEVER buy anything from that store again, even though it is 3 blocks from my home. I have been buying everything there to support the neighborhood store, but not any more. I will use Amazon from now on and will drive out of my way to go to the Laurel hardware store and boycott the people in Woodminster. Shame on you. Ellen read more

Sweet folks, and a hit-or-miss inventory. I managed to get about half the stuff on my list (who runs out of aerators?) and the staff was polite and friendly, but the lines are fairly long for such a small store, and usually only one register is open at a time, for some time, until someone is freed up from making keys to staff another. ACE could do a better job of supplying its franchisees, though even inquiring about getting a screen made suggested that the staff was also lean, and not always experienced (2 week wait for a screen because their screen guy was ill). Great for a neighborhood store, and a nicer experience than driving 3 times as far to Home Despot. read more

I live down the hill from the Mormon Temple so these guys are my 1st thought for stuff I need. I've been going in here for almost two years, since they moved to the new location in Woodminster (Lincoln & 13 on the uphill side of 13 if you are new to the area). I can only recall one time when I had to go someplace else to get something that would work. I needed some 2" ABS pipe once, full length, they had it! Honestly they have 90% of what the big orange box place has for plumbing, paint, electrical, fasteners, hardware, hand tools, power tool accesories like bits & blades and stuff I'm forgetting. They are adding things all the time too. It's starting to get that old hardware store clutter thing going, which I love. I have called them a lot to check stock on items and they are always able to understand what I am asking for and ask clarifying questions if needed. When I get there after the call, what they said would be there, is there. The prices might be a tiny bit higher than big box. The time and gas savings FAR, FAR out weigh this small premium, which is barely a factor for me anyway. Usually I am working into the evening on the house, so I wish they were open a little later. That's the only negative I have. read more

Terrible customer service. Would not accept a return for an unopened CO monitor the next morning after purchase. The receipt says 30 day return policy; some handwritten note on yellowed paper behind the counter says "all purchases are final." He told me he'd had trouble with real estate agents who buy the CO monitors and return them after a few days use. I told him I was not a real estate agent and that the package wasn't even opened. He said, "I've told you we don't accept returns." As he said this his voice was quivering with anger. They do have fairly good hours, so he's okay if you're local and need an emergency item. Run out after you've bought it, though, and don't come back. read more

If you're gracious enough to ignore the occasional juvenile behavior from certain employees, MVH can be a great tool in your regional tool belt. To quell your imagination: I was nearly knockdown as a middle-aged gentleman rushed out to the sidewalk to shout lewd comments at a female pedestrian. To be fair, they seemed to be acquaintances... During subsequent visits, I've found the staff to be extremely knowledge, more readily available than their big-box competitors, efficient and helpful. read more

Worst service I have ever received from any store I have ever been to. I went into this store today and asked if they had a specific type of herbicide. Instead of saying 'sorry no we don't', the answer I received and I kid you not from the employee there was: "sorry we don't like to kill people" I didn't realize it was the role of a hardware employee to judge its potential customers and shame them. The guy acts as if you are bothering him by shopping there. I recently tried again, no improvement. I will continue to drive down to laurel or even homedepot. The name is a bit confusing since they're no longer in Montclair. Big plus - it's much easier to park at the new location. I'm a softie for family-run hardware stores, and do what I can to support local businesses like this whenever I can avoid the chains.
