Today was their last day. I managed to get one last shopping stop in as they were literally packing up the stuff left. They had a bunch of stuff for free outside for anyone to take, which says a lot about this business. Will definitely be taking my business to see them for their excellent customer service at the South Shore location even if it is a farther drive from my daughter's preschool because I appreciate their honesty and loyalty to the customer's goals and needs. Pagano's Hardware on Central Ave is Alameda's hometown hardware store. Before you even think about going to Home Depot, you see if Paganos has it. I used to shop at the old Lincoln Ave location. You had to ask someone for help to find anything. Same is true at the Central Ave store. The store is packed with merchandise. The other day I was walking around the store looking for wall clocks and bug bulbs, and a store person had to help me. BTW, the store people aren't there to watch for shoplifters. They're there to help you find stuff in a semi-unorganized store. What? Someone is going to steal a bag of anchor bolts? Maybe run out the door with a shop vac? And Yes, they make keys. Pagnano's is an old-world style hardware store, where the staff actually know there stuff. As soon as you walk in to Pagnanos, you will be greated and asked if there is anything they can help you find. Name something - anything - and they will instantly rattle off the isle number and which side its on. They give out free popcorn. Love that. Reminds me of a hardware store that I used to go to as a kid. Great personal touch. Parking is always easy. You can be in-and-out within 2 minutes with that hardware item you need. read more

Today, Ben went out of his way to make sure I could repair my kitchen crane. I tried to buy the wrong thing that was quite pricey. He explained why the more affordable choice was better. I also stopped in at Lee's Donuts to get a donut...all sold out, but I did purchase a croissant. Then it was over to Pho Baguette to get a taro smoothie with boba. I'm just spreading my wealth in this strip mall. I don't do Bonfare, so no stopping in that business. While waiting for our loads of laundry to be cleaned, I decided to walk over to Pagano's to take a look-see. Their employees were unloading some of their merchandise. Pagano's Hardware Mart has moved from 1100 Lincoln Avenue, Alameda, to this location - 640A Central Avenue. I do not believe I should be the recipient and/or deserve the FTR for this business, as I feel it is not fair to all other yelpers who had reviewed this business at its prior address. I just want that noted. Ambiance: Double glass door entrance. In front of business, garden supplies, plants and equipment are displayed. Garden soil advertised for $5.00. Kingsford charcoal displayed to the left of the garden soil. Popcorn cart is several feet away from front entrance. A sign is also posted that the paint store is across the way at 640 F (correct address is 650 F - see photo). This location is not as spacious as their previous one. There is no second floor. All cement floor throughout the store. The aisles are wide. Cash register/check out stand also in front of entrance. Customer service: As always, excellent. Cashier in front greeted me immediately and radioed Scarlett to help me out with my inquiry. I am in the market to purchase a power screwdriver with a flathead and phillips drill bits. They do carry them and she recommended the Black and Decker model at a price of $29.99. Great! My husband and I will be back to purchase it. Parking: More parking spaces available in this strip mall available compared to previous location. Public transportation: AC #20. Stop heading to Oakland is in front of 1400 Grill on Webster Street. Stop heading to South Shore is in front of O'Reillys on Central Avenue. Even though I did return to purchase the power screwdriver, I saw something that was useful - a peachy clean silicone scrubber for my nonstick skillets for $7.99. This product is Made in the USA. It is mildew resistance, it does not carry an odor and it is safe on pots and pans. It is better than a sponge. Welcome, Pagano's to the west end of Alameda. I'm glad your store is at this location. I am super sad to hear that this location of Pagano's is closing. I have been a regular customer for nearly three decades. In that time, I have become very familiar with several long-time employees, and am so impressed with the quality of service and attentiveness that they offer. South shore center is not the most convenient location for me, but I would be inclined to make the trip there if I could know that I would keep on seeing the same friendly faces. Many of the employees in his establishment are very patient and good at helping you get to the bottom of your needs. They have normal stuff like cleaning, solvents, paint, just about anything you can want. But they also have hundreds of thousands of individual screw boxes, well screws, fastening hardware, literally, hundreds and thousands of different sizes shapes colors, metric and American. Plus they have decoration, sand, soaps, and waxes and candles. You can go in there as a construction worker and house, upgrade or, or kind of a shop or looking for cute stuff kitchen ware, etc.. The guy asked me what I needed help with and I showed him the kind of nails I needed and he pointed me to the direction and found the exact ones I needed. They suddenly require masks and I asked for one. They said I could only buy one and it was $3.99. I asked them to bring it to the curb and they said to come on in maskless?!? What's the point of requiring masks if it is ok to enter the store to buy masks? Most stores either offer them free or charge 10 to 25 cents a mask. The service at this hardware store is fantastic. Its almost at concierge level. When you walk in during the day, you'll be greeted and asked if there is anything they can help you find. I take them up on this everytime, and they always know exactly where everything is. The selection of screws, nuts, and bolts here is astounding. There is a full isle of neatly organized and well-labeled bins. Its so much easier to find little parts than other stores. My favorite part of this place is the free popcorn! They have a little popcorn machine at the entrance. You can help yourself to a bag of free popcorn, after scooping it yourself. So much fun. And the popcorn is darn good. If you have old fixtures in your home, Pagano's is one of the few places where you can find replacement parts. Although they have moved to a new location and tossed out a lot of inventory, it's still possible to get what you need here. And if you can't find it, the associates will call other hardware stores that specialize in older fixtures. I live on the other side of the tunnel and I make a special trip out here. About 30 years ago, in the early 80's, the city where I lived in western New York State had many 3rd generation privately owned hardware stores. Y'know, the type where you walk in with a plumbing project, plop it on the old wooden counter and say, "What do I need to replace this with PVC?" ...and they pull the necessary pieces, assemble it before your eyes, and say, "This is what you need." This level of service can't be matched by the big box stores. And, when is the last time you walked into a big box store and tried to match a screw, and then were able to buy just 2 of them? I value that level of service and I'm willing to pay a little more for it, and to keep Pegano's around. I always go to Pagano's first, then if they don't have what I need, I'll try the other privately owned hardware store in town first before relenting to go to a big box store. Last week, I went into Pegano's to get a couple of duplicate motorcycle keys made. They didn't carry the blanks I needed, which is not surprising as not many people need duplicate motorcycle keys. They recommended another locally owned store in town. I did order the blanks online (OK, not the best decision), got them two days later and walked into Pegano's with the blanks, asking them to make the keys for me. They used my two blanks to make the new keys. Then they refused to take any money from me, even though I told them that was not fair. This is the type of service you get from a privately owned hardware store that has a real stake in the community in which they live and operate. At a time when more and more privately owned hardware stores are disappearing, go to the local store first. Preserve them. Keep them around. Keep them in business. You may need them. This place has a lot of tools and much more. It doesnt have EVERYTHING but it's got many things you can improvise with. If you're looking for something specific, you can always ask the employees, but you can definitely find stuff yourself.
