Our experience with Truitt and White has been absolutely awful. Unfortunately, unlike other one star reviewers, we purchased our windows here through Brian Martin. He rushed through the order process, made several mistakes, never discussed color, and when we approached the company with these errors they were entirely unhelpful and the solution they offered was for us to BUY MORE WINDOWS from them at a slight discount. My friend warned me about this place and Brian Martin specifically, and was smart enough to buy from Ashby Lumber and had a great experience there. My serious but only complaint is that if you order products for later delivery or pickup by your contractor, they palm their junk off on you. It's a crappy way to treat customers but I have first hand experience now three times dealing with being handed damaged or substandard goods. The recent December 2022 rain storm blew a few of the decorative trim pieces off my home. After several phone calls to lumber companies in my immediate area, I was referred to Truitt & White Lumber Company. I received excellent customer service from Thom who collected the details of what I needed and then from Terrence who reproduced the additional trim pieces exactly from the sample I provided. While waiting I was asked several times by different employees, 'Are you being helped?' My experience was beyond satisfactory. Also happy to support a family-owned business. read more

We went to Truitt and White to look at Marvin windows because we need to replace the windows on our remote mountain cabin. Even though we can't buy the windows from them which they knew, the staff was incredibly generous with their time! Jeff Van Horne spent a lot of time showing us what all the features our installer was recommending looked like and what all the options were. He even had some cost saving suggestions that we will be looking into. In addition, they let us meet around a table for about an hour to go over the cost estimate that we had and figure out which estimate correlated with which window and whether the recommended window operation was what we wanted--even offered us refreshments. Truitt and White has always been our (and our contractor's) go to, but given this incredibly helpful welcome we won't look elsewhere. read more

I am a subcontractor in Berkeley and have been coming here for years. They always have what I need which is primary, but their staff has the attitude that they're doing you a favor when you ask a questions or need help. And what really bothers me is that I've never gotten a "thank you" from the cashier after I pay for my materials. Maybe I'm too sensitive, but I think the staff could do better. read more

My experience with Truitt & White has been horrific. The person I was working with completely disappeared and it was not until I had been sending him emails for 2 months that I was able to get someone on the phone to tell me he was no longer working there. AFTER I paid $1,500 for custom doors. Then the guy who assured me he would take over continued to ghost me via email. I started this process 4 months ago and after I got a call that the doors had arrived learned that they never ordered he hardware I had ordered and received an invoice for a month prior. I do not recommend using them. It has been a total headache. read more

I can't say enough about Van & Jim I usually go to economy lumber and Ashby lumber for my windows and wood supplies - fortunately today neither had the part I needed so I ended up going to Truitt & White. I didn't realize Truitt & White works with smaller projects like mine (I'm not a contractor I'm a handy home owner). When I arrived the young lady at the front desk got me right where I needed to go (no waiting). Van (Vanzuela McDanies) was the representative who helped me. Van greeted me and let me know she'd be right with me (she was dealing with 2 other people on the phone). As I waited I saw Van comfort a customer, take very technical details from a manufacturer and ask questions that help expedite everything - this was before she helped me. Then she helped me... Van asked a couple questions, located what I needed and actually walked me to the warehouse to confirm parts were in - wow!!! Unfortunately, the part wasn't where it was suppose to be - but Van didn't give up. She spoke to everyone as she passed - good thing she did because we met Jim. Jim was just as personable. He says hold on let me check another area. The first area he checked he didn't find the parts then he checked 2-3 other places - it was like Van & Jim had to win the day - and they did - they found the parts. All this took 30-45 minutes Van and Jim put Truitt & White in a class by itself. Oh yeah they told me about classes T&W offer to teach installation among other things. Great experience! read more

Just had my first experience at this business. A clean and well run operation. The people helping us load the redwood we bought were friendly and professional. The cashiers were friendly but one cashier teased me three or four times and it felt unprofessional and disrespectful. I stumbled into this place yesterday looking for a screwdriver and walked out $300.00 lighter and a happy man! What I found was an outstanding hardware supply store! From basics to the top of the line Festool power tools. Super knowledgeable and a couple cool dogs kept mine entertained. Oh they have a great lumber set up as well! The level of service @ Truitt & White is superior! My fiance and I went to several other lumber companies before, looking for interior doors & baseboards. Not a single one could answer our questions or give us general information on different options. All we got was look through this catalog of a couple hundred doors and let me know what you like. We had lost hope and really had no clue what we were going to do for our doors. As soon as we walked into Truitt & White, Terrace introduced herself and got right into helping us. Within minutes we had a better idea of what door style we liked. One more time. Sam did it again. Returned with the needed part to be able to adjust the window so it could close as good as new. What I failed to acknowledge in the past is Angela. During the previous 5 months I have had periodic communication with Angela to assist me in repairing our 30 year old windows. First she assisted me in the selection of the proper part, she ordered them and when I needed installation she scheduled Sam. Today my most recent and for now last contact with Angela. We completed the final step in the repair. I thanked her for the many phone calls and assistance she provided. In addition to being efficient and accurate she does it with patience and when needed a sense of humor. What ever Mr White and Mr Truitt are doing to keep Angela and Sam, keep it up. Dave, Maria and Sam spent the better part of an hour in their store trying to find replacement door latches for my home. They instructed me to disassemble the latches to determine the correct dimensions. In doing so, I was very surprised to find I could fix the ones we had. I needed a replacement part for an older Marvin window. Eric and the young lady in the receiving department were able to help me find the part that I needed. I had also recently ordered a part for a different Marvin door and Truitt and White was able to order the parts that I needed. I've dealt with other suppliers in the past and the customer service here is "heads and shoulders" above the others. read more

The technician that fixed our window, Noe, was awesome. He was prompt, courteous, friendly and efficient. He followed all the Covid protocols and was extremely pleasant. He took the time to explain exactly what he was doing each step of the repair process. After literally years of frustration with multiple service visits that evaluated but went no where, repeated phone messages, emails and even driving to Berkeley in person, our problem was never resolved. We are still missing screens that we paid for and that Truitt & White agreed to provide. Apparently replacement parts were ordered, subsequently lost in the warehouse, and eventually thrown out due to disorganization and employee turnover. We almost had a resolution from customer service recently... "Pam, I made a call to the distributor and found out that they unfortunately no longer make the screens for your doors. Warren has offered to give you a credit of $300.00 for the screens as a courtesy." From me... "I would be happy to seek out an independent estimate from a third party for the sliding frenchdoor screen and the six additional window screens that the Truitt & White correspondence of 06/08/05 clearly states you will provide us at no charge. I do not believe that $300 will cover this cost." After submitting the bid for $697: From the owner this statement... "Since we had gone to the trouble and expense of ordering your replacement screens it seems reasonable that we would have made every attempt within our control to finish the process. We believe in providing customer service and stand behind the products we sell but we do have our limits. Based on the time frame of your current request and the information you provided us I must decline your request for any compensation for replacing your screens at this time." I agree Warren White, it seems reasonable that you would make the effort to deliver what you owed your customer but the fact is you DID NOT make an attempt to deliver! This owner is willing to risk a very bad review for his company over a $700 fix on a $60,000 order. Truitt & White is completely unorganized and the ownership is absolutely unethical in blaming a much too patient customer for their mistakes and mishaps. Avoid this business! read more

Juan was the expert on door handles; he helped me find the exact part that I needed, and he helped me get it much faster than I would have gotten it anywhere else. I've been putting off writing this review because I've had good and bad experiences here and struggle with articulating my overall feelings for Truitt and White. But since I've used Truitt & White for far too many of my projects, including recent remodels, here's to ending the lolly-gagging. Here are a few of my big epiphanies and tips: 1) When you walk into this place it looks like a clean family-owned hardware and lumber company that's really grown over the years and functions like a well-oiled machine. Take a number, see a specialist, get sent to the appropriate location for merchandise, pay. 2) They carry a nice selection of items you'd need and didn't think you'd need. 3) MOST IMPORTANT TIP: The quality of your experience here is utterly dependent on who you end up speaking to for assistance. If you have time, consider lingering around and observing the interactions of the various sales people or staff behind the counter, then try to make a thoughtful effort to seek assistance from someone you think you can make nice with. For the windows and doors at the Marvin Showroom, see Roger. He was good at asking the right questions and giving us serval options with honest pros and cons for each option. He was responsive - especially with emails. With our last order with him, our special order windows arrived two weeks earlier than he anticipated. As a result, we were able to complete the kitchen earlier than if we had to wait for the windows . Score! 4) As enthusiastic as I might sound about Truitt and White as I have had success in getting what I needed from here, it's kind of pricey, the service is not consistent, and quite honestly, beyond the smiley white faces of the staff here, there's something almost plastic and kind-of-unwelcoming about this place. I called this company a few days ago to order replacement windows for an older Craftsman house, and had one heck of a weird experience with Roger in that dept. My 1927 Craftsman still has lots of original charm, however the windows are cheap aluminum, and are not standardized sizes. Our contractor measured them carefully and I called Roger to order replacement Milgards. Roger then began to enthusiastically re-evaluate each window's size. He made guesses based on his knowledge of Craftsman styles, and said he wanted me to make sure my contractor was ok with the changes. I wasn't happy with this, but went back to my contractor, who said that while he wasn't super happy either about replacing windows using this approach, he thought he could handle it. I had told Roger I would call him back the next day to order, but when I did, he asked me what my contractor thought, and when I said he was ok with it, told me he was uncomfortable with that! Then he wouldn't allow me to order unless my contractor came in. I tried to reason with him but he insisted I could 'reverse the charges' if I was later disappointed in the sizes, and he just wouldn't risk it. Give me a break. When you place an order for windows and they come in the size ordered, there is no basis whatsoever for reversing charges. I have no idea why he put me through the whole thing but it was nuts. The good news is that I went to Royal Windows and Doors in Pleasant Hill and saved $1000 on the exact same order! read more

This review-rating is only for their Window & Door Dept. I'm not a pro contractor, but in 10 years I've installed over 25 doors of various quality and types (swings, bifolds, pockets, sliders, interior, exterior, glazed, shojis, 8-footers, overhead, etc.). Some I've made custom from fir stock since I have my own workshop, some are from Home Depot, some from Pella direct, etc. I've also installed over 17 windows of various types. I've literally remodeled my entire house foundation to roof. Basically I'm the ultimate DIYer. I know a thing or two about installing doors as well as fabricating doors. So it saddens me to report that Truitt & White, despite their reputation as a complete supplier for builders, runs a lousy Window and Door department. Prices are sky high, service is disrespectful and quality is low. If you don't care about price, they would gladly sell you a $5,000 door. Just one door! However, if you walk in asking for a low cost french door for example, they'll quote you a snotty snippy $900 and try to get you to go away. But I went ahead and bought just that $900 door. It came down to their reputation as a premier door supplier. They hang these doors (to hang is to mount with hinges onto jambs) in their own shop same premises. I gambled that they would be able to put together a good door. Lo and behold, their workmanship sucks big time! Jambs are not straight or parallel. Clearances vary from 1/4" to nil as a result, which is nearly unacceptable for doors. Screws are not centered (easy to do with a centering drill bit), lots of dirty finger prints all over the bare wood panels. It's like they hired an unskilled laborer to hack it together. Lots of other little problems. It was downright impossible to re-shim to make fit. But most installers I'm sure do just that -- cover up the mess and never report the poor source quality. So it was either transporting it back & wait another 3 weeks for replacement (and more disrespectful service & haggling) or just trimming it down myself and re-mortising the hinges. I did the latter and got it done. It's very disappointing. The main store and their lumber might be okay with higher than average prices. read more

Walked into their showroom to look at windows. We have an old , leaky window, and it needs replacing. I was a serious buyer, ready to go, as we are in the middle of an exterior paint job, and the timing is right. Spoke to a salesperson, explained the need. He gave me his card, I emailed him dimensions and photos of the existing window within a day. Never heard back from him. Then, after two follow up calls, leaving messages for him I just gave up trying. Got another estimate. Going ahead with the job, using another company, I guess Truitt and White do not need $6200.00 worth of business. They're too busy for your business. read more

The staff was amazing helping us first with our doors and then with door handles. (Who knew doors didn't come with handles?) I was amazed at the range of options from number of windows (or lites) and texture or tint in those windows, panels of wood, types of wood, or no wood at all. Whew! So many considerations. What a wonderful team! Every has been incredibly helpful and patient with us as we've redone our home over the last four years. I Truitt & White has everything you possibly need plus tools that work, by people that use them on a daily basis. I am a designer and I needed some items to help me measure floor leveling, room sizes, stud finding, joist and that all so important SIMPSON WOOD CONSTRUCTION CONNECTORS CATALOG for cripple wall design. These guys not only had what is the standard connectors but had what contractors use to make the job stronger and built faster. So boobs or brains, they help give you what you need to do the project correctly, and safe. read more

I generally like this place, and I find some of the staff helpful. I had been looking at doorknobs for two weeks and had worked with Sam in the hardware department. Got the information I needed, left with a catalogue. SAM IS AWESOME! A few weeks later I go to place the order but Sam's not there so I work with Larry. DO NOT WORK with Larry. What should have been a basic order that arrived in 4-5 days ended up taking two weeks and I ended up with more doorknobs than I had wanted. I was very specific saying I was ordering door knobs for my new door which I had ordered at Truitt. First, a week after I place my order Larry called to say that the knob company needed one more piece of info to finalize the order, mainly how does the door open and to what side. Well, I should have been asked this question when I placed my order. Second, two weeks later I received my door knob. I thought I was getting two door knobs but I got four! I had said I had wanted one for the exterior and one for the interior being told I could mix and match, as long as they were from the same company. Instead, I have a set of each of the door knobs. So now I have to return one set and Larry tells me there is a 25% restocking fee. Well he messed up not me. Apparently Larry is new and not very well trained. Run! read more

Large Custom Glass French Sliding Door: I had a large custom sliding door project - to be installed in a very prominent spot in the house. Truitt and White worked with me to insure I got the right door (it took 2 tries and Mark Pearsall, VP insured great results in a difficult situation to his credit and the companies). The door is fabulous, beautiful, perfect for the spot and this older home and the installation (done by an outside contractor - Steve Holmes) went well, with Truitt and White being supportive all along the way (came out and adjusted the track, slider and locking mechanism). The product is good but the service depends on the mood of the staff and time of the day and the blowing of the wind..... This place has got Berkeley written all over it... which is.... "we are just fine in our socialist Berkeley fantasy world and we are too cool to give a crap if you buy our stuff or not." If you know what you want then fine, we will ring you up and you will be on your way ASAP. But if you don't know what you want or you want some advice or help.... then you need to be very, very nice to us staff. Cos you the customer are just and obstacle between us and our pay checks and we can not really be bothered with your ass. The guys in the back and the product itself are good (if a little pricey).
