Berkeley Design Center is a fantastic place if you are looking for good quality material and variety of styles. There are lots to choose from. It appears to me that there aren't lots of people working at the Berkeley Design Center show room. So you have to be patient and wait to be attended when Roxie is busy with another client or ask for help when no one is in the showroom. I have been working wth Roxie who is very easy to communicate with, resourceful and extremely patient. Top notch professional! I highly recommend visiting this place for your home project. read more

I don't understand a company that lists their open hours on their voicemail so their potential customers drive to the store during those supposed hours - just to read on the front door that Saturday hours are by appointment only. DO NOT work with this company if you want your project materials to calculated and ordered correctly. They will make mistakes and not refund you based on their errors. When we initially requested a quote for marmoleum sheet flooring, a contractor came to our house to take measurements. After reviewing the quote, we decided to request a quote for click marmoleum to compare prices. The quote and calculations included the same measurements of the space but with different materials, sheet vs. click tile. We decided to go with the click tile because it was more affordable and the owner told us that we could either work with their contractor or one that we hire. Berkeley Design Center's contractor sent a quote that did not include baseboard installation and was at least $1,000 more than anyone else so per the owners recommendation over the phone, we hired someone else. The materials arrived at our house and were installed. During this process it was discovered that 60% more materials(over $400) were ordered by BDC. When I contacted the company they took no responsibility and said that "If we had done the installation and made the mistake of ordering more than typical 10% waste, then we would have refunded the cost of additional material ordered and not used. Since you chose some other installer, you should have asked your installer to determine the correct quantity needed before ordering the material." This quote is blaming us for choosing a different installer, a recommendation that was made to us by the owner. In all of their emails, they have admitted that you need to order less materials when it comes to sheet marmoleum and click tile, a calculation they should have made, and yet will not take responsibility for their error. read more

Had a very disappointing experience with this shop. Ordered two colors of square porcelain tile for a kitchen floor renovation, checkerboard pattern. Half of the tiles showed up 1/8 of an inch shorter than the other half, meaning clean lines couldn't be achieved. Our contractor had to work a 14 hour day to finish the project because he had to cut all the tiles to the correct size rather than a simple half day job. Given that the tiles were not to the spec I ordered, I requested a refund. Sinan, the owner, refused, and did not take responsibility for the product issue. On the phone, he also said I was "making a fuss," which is an entirely inappropriate way to address a customer. Horrendous experience. read more

We looked everywhere for cement like tiles that didn't cost a fortune and found them at BDC. Service was fine, commutation was prompt and we got the tiles without any problems. My contractor said the tiles are very good quality. The only drawback for me is they only accept cash or check, no credit cards. When purchase orders go into the thousands, they should have the option to let you pay by credit card. read more

Berkeley Design Center proved to be very helpful for my most recent purchase. Their selection is very comprehensive with items I couldn't find at other stores. I was able to find everything there that I had hunted for weeks other places. I should have gone there first. We have visited several times over the years and due to one reason or another never found exactly what we needed until this time. While working on a renovation project requiring some new flooring tile plans we visited BDC and met with Sinan (the owner) after a few more visits, samples and A+ input from Sinan to help us we purchased our new flooring from BDC and the entire process was fun and easy. Sinan helped us track the shipment and even when the shipper broke a few boxes Sinan helped us get new ones ASAP incredibly easy and low stress. Sinan's advice was helpful in narrowing down our selections and ensuring things like lighting, grout, and other things were factored into our entire plan. Please beware of this operation! I have been to BDC many times over the years. I do not know when Sinan began handling their work, but I trusted that it was a reputable place and that he was a reputable dealer. I had BDC/DEVCO install a very large window, several smaller ones, and a sliding glass door in our home. We had installed windows just like these in other areas of our home before without incident, so did not anticipate any problems. It seemed like a simple, straightforward project. While we were on vacation, the windows went in. When we returned, to our disbelief, they had completely jerri-rigged some strange way of installing the windows and they were horrible! I called Sinan. He came over and gave us some far-fetched reason as to why these windows had to be installed in this manner--differently from all of the others, and why the resolution to the problem would entail removing all of our mouldings, the window sill, and a number of other things that made no sense. Our painter came in, took one look at the windows and couldn't believe it. He offered to reinstall the window. I called Sinan. He said to tell the guy that if he thought he could do it to go ahead. The painter removed the windows and the rigging that Sinan had installed and put the window in. No big deal, no need to do all the things that Sinan was telling us we had to do, and the window looks great. I deducted the amount the painter charged me for the reinstallation from the final amount paid to Sinan. Sinan agreed to the amount. We paid him the full amount less the amount we paid for the reinstallation, even though we still left with the other smaller windows that he installed that have been put in in the same shoddy way. Today we just received a letter from Sinan threatening us with a Contractor's Lien if we do not give him the balance of the money. My first read of this experience was that the contractor was sadly incompetent. Now I realize that he is also unscrupulous. Beware!!!!! read more

I have been to BDC five times looking at tile for our complete home remodel, both to get ideas and to inquire about pricing, and was excited to know that I would be supporting a neighborhood store. With only Roxy working there you will wait a while to get attention, though she is friendly and tries to assist as soon as she can. The issue is that she couches all her answers to my questions with vague language about pricing, availability of stock, and what her manager will allow her to do. Yesterday was the last time I'll go there. I am looking for bullnose tile to finish off a project that is already in motion, but because I didn't buy the field tile I was trying to match from BDC, I was told they wouldn't sell me the bullnose tile. What?! She said her manager wouldn't sell me anything unless I spent more than $250.00. A sale is a sale and now another local tile shop just got my money. read more

We have worked on two projects with Sinan Sabuncuoglu and his team at Berkeley Design Center. We have been extremely happy with the overall process and of course the finished product. Sinan offers a one stop shop service, which includes, the Berkeley showroom and resource center, design services, product selection and contracting services. Our first project was a kitchen renovation / update and the 2nd was a fireplace renovation / update. During the process we found Sinan to be very patient, as we did not make decisions quickly and with Sinan's keen sense of design and attention to detail always steered us in the right direction. Sinan's contracting team were first class and Sinan was on-site most days supervising the work. We felt quite comfortable leaving a key and actually left for a couple days vacation leaving Sinan and his team to lock up at the end of the day. We recently completed a kitchen remodel, we hired all the subcontractors and bought all the appliances and materials. We borrowed tons of samples as we decided what finishes and products to use. After carefully checking prices and references, we found the Berkeley Design Center very reasonable and consistently the best value. In addition, they have the most complete list of products and recommended sub contractors in the area. They are easy to work with and their store always has parking. I would give them 10 stars if I could. read more

Extremely slow to respond. Sent me damaged material and would not offer me a reasonable refund. Owner was rude when he finally did decide to respond to my emails. Were not helpful getting an installer to work with my project. All in all, I highly recommend finding somewhere else to buy from. And I am a designer - I would have thought I would get better than average treatment seeing as how I represent potential repeat business. Sad. read more

If I could give zero I would. Went there on a Saturday afternoon to look for tile options. Looked around for 20 mins -- not one person greeted or even acknowledged us. There were at least 2 ppl in the office with an open door and we were the only ones in the store -- impossible for them to not know we were there. The products were disorganized, not labeled and not priced. Don't waste your time here and just goto Import Tile. read more

Cannot comment on using this outfit for supplies/materials only but I would not recommend them for any renovation project as I felt they were way over priced for the quality of work. With a few relatively minor changes to the initial plan the initially quoted price rose by %50. This truly felt like a bait and switch though the bait wasn't all that attractive to begin with as the initial quote was fairly high for the amount of work involved. I was just expecting high quality work as the showroom suggests. The final price was even more of a slap in the face. Silly me. I knew no better and had no recommendations for them. Lesson learned. You can do better elsewhere.... Is it not odd also that there are not more reviews for this business that has been around for many years? It seems suspicious for manipulation, especially after my experience. Let's see how long this post stays up. read more

I like supporting brick and mortar stores but this is not the one to go to (unless perhaps you are a contractor). The staff is extremely ill informed about what is available and directed me to several products that they subsequently couldn't get (and told me that several days after I ordered products with them) - this delayed our project. I had left a cash deposit (they don't take credit cards) and had to go back to get the cash. Their products are more expensive than elsewhere. I feel like I wasted a lot of time here. read more

Our experience started out fine -- the sales rep helped us find tile that would suit our needs, and had some good design ideas. However, when it came time to order the tile, we started to run into problems. We are not contractors ourselves, so to be safe we gave them measurements for the spaces we needed to cover, and they calculated the square footage of tile we would need. When we later checked, it didn't seem like they had put in any extra for overage, so we asked them to add 10-20%, which they did. When we received the tile, however, it was still not enough. Apparently, mosaics are typically sold by the sheet, and one sheet might be approximately one square foot, but is often less than that (ours were 20% less than a square foot). The BDC rep did not seem to know this, and so she calculated the square footage (e.g., 15 SF) and ordered 15 sheets. With our request for overage, we had closer to the right amount, but still not enough. This set back our project by a week while we had to wait for additional tile, and it cost us extra in shipping. We counted on BDC for tile expertise (otherwise we could easily order tile ourselves online or elsewhere), and they did not come through. It ended up costing us time and money. They did not think it was a big deal. Caveats: I don't think the rep who helped us is with the company any longer, and Sinan seems friendly. read more

Les is great. I have been into the Berkeley Design Center several times, and she knows me now. She is very knowledgeable and helpful. The design center has a nice selection of floors, tile, and countertops. I especially like their Marmoleum section. There is generally parking out in front. And it is never crowded. Great place to go for a remodeling or refurbishing project. read more

This is the third project we've done with Berkeley Design Centre........all three came out amazing but this last project had even a bigger WOW factor! All of the remodels truly came out beyond our expectations. Sinan's great sense of design and style truly gave the projects the added assurance of no regrets when they were finished. I was in need of quality sinks and faucets. Not only was their customer service representative (Roxy) incredibly responsive, she was able to anticipate my needs. Even more incredible was that the owner of BDC actually paid a "house call" to make sure that the sink I was ordering would work with our existing cabinetry. BUYER BEWARE.....i ignored previous posted warnings. I wen t in looking for wood appearing tile and told the owener what I planned. He showed me a new italian tile that was being imported by 2 italian americans in santa cruz. He told me I could offset by a third. Once the tile arrived, I learned that it was from India. That was not a problem except that 3 tile setters commented on how warped it was ( yes, long plank tile can do that but they all felt it was more than usual for the length. By then I had accepted 3500 square feet as I had not opened 100's of boxes) . By then, Les at the store had said the company recommended off setting by no more than a quarter. No big deal. Except the tile setter I choose explained why he recommended having no offset to minimize lippage. Once he got more into the job, he said the warping was far worse. I am stuck with many many thousands of dollars on tile that was misrepresented as italian tile. Quality was so poor I had to change design of installation. Owner said he was sorry but then started talking about long tiles. The tile setter I am using had set many plank tiles---without the difficulties i have encountered. What seemed like a good buy ( not a great one) has turned out to be a very costly one. The owner tried passing the buck and blamed what the tile supplier said....who, of course, also had some excuse. read more
