Pretty basic selection. I've been to over 5+ tile stores in the area and the selection here is probably more limited than what is displayed at Home Depot: - There are very few bright colored tiles. - They do not carry any zellige tiles. I think it might be a good place to go to if you're a contractor flipping houses looking for something universal (neutrals), but not if you're a homeowner looking for something unique. Staff was very helpful though and gave me a white subway time sample even though that was not close to what I was looking for. read more

Great tile at a very reasonable price. Amazingly knowledgeable staff who wont try to sell you the most expensive tile. They listen to what you need and find the right product. They carry high quality Italian porcelain at the price you pay elsewhere for second rate tile. The tile on display is in stock at the warehouse in the back of the building so you can drive off right away with what you purchase. The staff in the warehouse are just as competent. They recommended the right grouts to use and the best Schluter trim for the tile I selected. They are super efficient and had my van loaded up in 15 minutes. I like that this store focuses on having a well curated selection of very high quality tile rather than carrying hundreds of lower quality tiles. These folks are tile aficionados, not commission salespeople. Great experience. read more

My partner and I just bought our first home and want to do some exterior and interior tile work. We visited the Berkeley location this past weekend and were completely ignored. Three employees were there; one was helping a customer and the other two behind the desk. We did not even get a "welcome in" or "please let us know if you have any questions". In fact, they didn't even look at us. It's a small, quite space and clearly the staff has zero listening skills or simply do not care. When we walked out 30 minutes later, one of the employees had the audacity to say "have a good day". We are shopping around but now know we can cross the Tile Shop off our list. read more

Kirk gave us excellent advice on the selection of our two tiles for our walk-in shower. We chose mosaic "Terrae" for the floor of the shower and for a matching band of color at about eye level, with glossy white subway tiles for the walls. Kirk suggested a perfect light gray grout color that would unify these two very different tiles -- and we have been so happy with the result! We have lived with our new shower for almost five months now, and I am always admiring the elegant look -- and also the very practical nature of these choices. The white subway tile makes the shower seem very bright, light, spacious, and the mosaic tiles on the floor and in the eye level horizontal band offer so much texture and depth. And safety too -- as the floor is not at all slippery. The grout color is just perfect and brings the whole design together. Thank you Kirk and The Tile Shop! We decided to add a new kitchen backsplash and tile to another kitchen wall. We started looking at samples online and decided we wanted to purchase from a local tile shop to ensure we got the color we wanted. Also kept reading about people receiving shipments where tiles were broken and we didn't want to deal with returning and reordering items. We selected a tile installer and had a few questions about the tile we picked. I called the store several times and everyone I spoke with was very helpful. Upon arrival the staff was welcoming and extremely knowledgeable. I came in knowing what I was looking for and they were able to help us with exactly what we needed. Everything from selecting the right tile to the quality of the product was on point. We accidentally picked up the wrong size tile, we called a couple days later and the issue was resolved in no time at all. I was having my bathroom remodeled so I visited a lot of tile stores in the East Bay, I think it was 6 or 7. The first time I went to Tileshop, no one greeted me. There were a lot of customers there at the time and all the agents were busy. It was a weekend. It didn't bother me because I was just looking and trying to decide what I wanted for the bathroom floor. I walked all around for about 20 minutes and left, no one said a word to me and that was fine. At that point, I didn't have any questions anyway and I don't like sales people that are pushy. After going to so many shops I decided I wanted ceramic tile that looks like wood. There were so many varieties at all these stores. My contractor told me some of it is bumpy and hard to clean. I remembered one at this shop that I really liked and it was pretty smooth. I went back on a weekday, it was less busy and there were several sales reps who answered my questions. They had a pretty large area of the tile I liked on the floor, it looked kind of grey to me. But they offered to give me a sample and that was more taupe. Turns out the batches vary. It is inkjet printed on porcelain. I brought the sample home and checked out how it would look. Decided I loved it and went back to buy it. The sales rep was very nice and the great thing is they have most of their tile in stock, the warehouse is right there. Most of the other shops I went to had to order their tile. At the warehouse, they gave me an extra tile, no charge. Turns out we didn't need it but that was nice of them. I'll return it now that the bathroom is finished. Check out the photo, looks great. My contractor thought it was some of the nicest of this variety that he had worked with. I agree, the pieces vary, a lot of the cheaper stuff is the same pattern printed on every tile, looks fake. We came looking for tile to re-do our fireplace, but discovered they specialize more in bathroom/kitchen tiles and didn't have the decorative stuff we were looking for. Nonetheless, we browsed and the owner told us about the best type of tile for our specific project. Even though he didn't have what we needed, he was happy to point us in the right direction and refer us to another shop in SF. It was educational, at the very least! We walked away with warm fuzzy sentiments for this place and their staff - it's rare when someone takes the time to help, even when there's nothing in it for them. I reached out to Nelson via text on Saturday, when the shop was closed. We had an emergency pop up when the tile we had ordered from a different shop showed up in the wrong color. I was panicked! The contractors were scheduled to start installing the floor first thing Sunday morning!! Nelson was quick to respond letting me know that the shop was closed for the weekend but went out of his way to try to match our tiles anyway to spare me from having to keep searching. He offered two options that were very close to my original order! In the end, the original shop overnighted the correct tiles but the Tileshop was next on my list. I had a good look around and all I got for help were glares from the snooty people working there - one of them was annoyingly shrill as she walked around, that was enough for me. Not bad choices but I'd rather shop online, I'd get the same amount of assistance. Update for April 2017: So, I thought I'd try them out once more as I'm onto the first of two bathroom remodels now,having done the kitchen. Always good to give a second chance I think. Same again. Zero from the people working there. One would think they may have reached out as I walked to the door to leave, but no. The showroom is mediocre to say the least, worsened only by their lack of service. I recommend Cal Tile Co. in Albany - Calvin goes above and beyond, I suggest these people take a trip to learn something about customer service and a real tile selection. Wow, what a great place! We're in the midst of redoing our kitchen and I am SO SICK of going to shop for granite, wood, cabinets, tile, paint, findings, plumbing stuff - you name it. I didn't want to go to the Tileshop this morning, but reluctantly agreed since I wanted to get this project over and done with! The place is laid out very well and they have an enormous variety to chose from in all prices, colors, styles and materials. We made our way around, made a decision (we pretty much knew what we wanted), hooked up with a salesperson, and were driving off in our car with the tile about an hour later. Warning: Inappropriate business practices. Buy somewhere else. I purchased tile here but I was told that I must send my contractor over ASAP or the tile I purchased may be re-sold to someone else. They said it was not their policy to mark the box I bought as sold and save it for me. They said they would give me a refund if the tile I purchased was re-sold to another customer before I could pick it up. Although I protested that the boxes I purchased should be put aside and marked as mine, and saved for pickup, the Tile Shop rep (Todd) told me he could not do that, and I should "send my gentleman right over, today" to pick it up if I want to make sure to get it. (I am a female customer.) My contractor was furious at having to drop everything and go at that moment. There are plenty of other nice tile stores you can buy from where they know how to mark and save a sold item, and do not treat female customers like this. read more

When tile shopping- to find exactly what you're looking for, you have to go to many many tile stores. Each one has it's own array of available in stock tiles ('cause who wants to special order and wait for their stuff?). I wound up buying tile from three stores. This store had a selection that was perfect for our old style craftsman/art deco house. In particular, they had a bunch of subway tile styles in beautiful muted tones that weren't offered anywhere else. I bought a muted matte pistachio green subway with slight speckling that was beautiful on my kitchen backsplash, in addition to some other lovely tiles for the floor. My only criticism was that they were expensive. But then when you want handmade tile, I guess you have to shell out. If you have a certified tiler doing it for you- get them to give you a discount. read more

Most of the times when we need tiles for home improvement projects I would go to Import Tiles in Berkeley and Granite Expo in Emeryville. I am glad my neighbor Bob (who works there) informed me about the Tileshop. They have a very nice showroom and good selection of beautiful tiles. Their tiles are sourced from Italy and so the prices are a bit higher but the quality and design are also of high grade. I came here after already visiting several tile places and so I wasn't expecting much, but I was very happy to find the tiles that closely matched the design I had in mind. The customer service I got was excellent. Karen gave me personal attention and provided free samples and brochure to take home (other places charge you for samples). When I came back to purchase the tiles Kirk was pleasant to work with and gave friendly advice about which grout to use. We ended up with a beautiful bathroom and I am glad I got the tiles at the Tileshop read more

My husband is insanely picky about tile and we looked everywhere. Tileshop had some really neat options we didn't see anywhere else that were very reasonably priced and in stock. The fact they were in stock made a huge difference for us because we had a bunch of issues with our contractors and had to go back a few times for more tile. I am so grateful to the Tileshop. They have gorgeous tile, fantastic prices, kind staff and, what's more, a social conscience! As an art teacher bringing art to inner city public schools where kids otherwise get no exposure to the arts (!), I am always seeking great places for supplies. I had asked several tile stores for donations or teacher rates for a mosaic project I was leading in the Tenderloin last spring. Most responses were less than enthusiastic. People actually seemed to turn up their noses at the idea. I persisted...you have to. And then I met Claudia at the Tileshop. Not only did she and the owner agree to generously donate tile to the non-profit I work for, she bent over backwards to help. She picked out special colored tiles just for me, sought donations from other sources even, and aided me in planning out the mosaic application. She treated me like a valued customer and she was helping MY project! When we remodel our kitchen and bath next year, we will be giving our business to the Tileshop. read more

This could easily be a 5 star review based on ease of purchase and end result, but it started off disappointingly and left me feeling a bit cynical. I called them about cream 3x6 Manhattan Subway tiles, and they said there would be a problem with the match between bullnose and regular pieces - that some people were able to accept the questionable match and others weren't. We agreed I would have to come down and take a look for myself. When I got there the situation was very different from what the desk person had described. In fact, all the cream Manhattan tiles, bullnose and regular, were decidedly grey. The office person readily agreed that they were all grey, and that it was this grey color that had been making people balk. Somehow this rendition was not in any way the same as the story she'd told about the 'match' issue. I went ahead and bought them, but took them back the next day and paid for the difference between them and Riva tiles. I'm happy with the Riva - but feeling a bit cynical about Tileshop. read more

I had an incredibly crappy experience here recently. I don't like to slam a local business, but really, customer service is one of the main reasons people patronize local shops rather than, say, the nightmare that is Home Depot. Their selection seems decent, although we had something specific in mind so we didn't look around much. My partner and I are in the throes of a remodel and needed to purchase tiles for the bathroom of our 1920's cottage. Wanting to stick to a period-appropriate look, we decided on those little black and white hexagon tiles and white subway tiles for the walls with a black stripe and a cap trim for the top of the wainscoting. Seemed pretty simple, and it's a small bathroom. Over the past few months, we've stopped in to several places in Berkeley, Oakland, and San Francisco to locate these tiles, which turned out to not be as easy to find nor as economical as we had hoped (typical for the whole remodeling project, of course!) The "right" tiles were at Tile Shop, but the times we've stopped by in the past, not a single person has greeted us, offered to help us, or in fact even made eye contact. This should have been a red flag, but like I said, they had what we wanted, so last weekend we decided to go with our plans in hand so that we looked more serious. We were ready to buy and it should have been a simple matter and an easy sale for them. We walked in and there was one guy at the counter who was helping another customer. So we waited. And waited. After about 5 minutes passed and he hadn't acknowledged our presence at all, in fact he seemed to be avoiding looking our direction, my partner asked if there was anyone who could help us. I mean, we don't mind waiting, but c'mon! say hello at least- we're not invisible!! He replied that his coworkers were on break, and then shouted into the back room that he had customers. A woman came out and seemed extremely put-upon that she had to help us. When we asked her some details about the tile we wanted she walked over to the display area with us, then promptly disappeared before we could ask her a question. It was downright weird, not to mention rude. We showed her our plans and she acted like it was crazy that our contractor wasn't the one buying the tile (b/c he's cheap and lets us do some of the legwork!). She was also annoyed that we hadn't figured out the exact amount of tile we needed- even though we had architectural drawings that were to scale. Plus, it seemed like she didn't really understand how to look at the drawings and figure out the dimensions. I don't know if we seemed too young, or not affluent enough for her, but she came across as a snob. Finally, we had enough and told her we'd go elsewhere. Then we walked out. Luckily, a nice woman in the parking lot gave us some great advice! She was also annoyed with Tile Shop and had witnessed our unpleasant exchange and said that she had a great experience at Art Tile in Oakland. So, Tile Shop, you lost $1500 worth of business as well as future business when we remodel the kitchen in a couple months solely because of the poor customer service we received. We're confused by the other positive reviews and would have been more hesitant to post this one if we hadn't been ignored multiple times, making it seem less like a fluke and more like a pattern. read more

i carried out about 600 pounds of tile away from the Tile Shop over the last few weekends. italian marble melograno mostly. i tried a bunch of tile places in the area. for some reason, berkeley and emeryville is just the hot spot for tiles in the SF bay area. but this one had some of the best selection. it's medium sized. nothing huge but the tiles were high quality. this is not the cheapest place to get tiles and the italian marble is outrageous in comparison to the artificial stuff, but it's good to have a solid selection of nice looking tiles when you're doing a redesign. if you're working on a budget the home depot is the best spot, i think, they have a pretty good selection and nothing is even a quarter the price of real marble. that said, the Tile Shop here, has a pretty nice selection of artificial tiles also, which apparently are easier to take care of as well. also very important is that the employees were very cool about giving out samples that you could take home and were helpful when trying to make suggestions. the bad part is they close at 4pm on saturdays which seems, unfortunately, to be the norm for all stores like this. weird considering that most people would want to shop for this stuff on the weekend. read more

In addition they also let people take samples of tile for free which in this day is rare. I have worked with Ted, Greg, Carlos, Juan and others in the warehouse, Nelson and Victoria in the front office, Chris French the outside customer rep has helped with installation questions, know Carl the owner by site (but not over coffee). What is striking is that there are people I have seen there for 20+ yrs. which bodes well for the general feel of the establishment and that people enjoy their job and are being treated well.
