Mike is very communicative and nice to work with. Scheduling and planning was easy. The problem was the work. There were sanding swirls and over-sanded low-spots in the floor, some areas that were unfinished, transition pieces where the wood was split, demo debris embedded in the finish, and molding not nailed down. I was rather surprised and disappointed with the level of craftsmanship - to the point where we are considering removing and starting over. Might have been a really rushed job or an unexperienced crew. read more

I'm so impressed by the professionalism and work ethic of the Floor Show. We just bought a new house, I was planning to apply a coating to the wood floor in the living room and kitchen to protect it from our dog's claws and kitchen water damage. I have no idea about flooring and am prepared to spend a few hundred if not thousand for this to be done. I have a dance studio in my home so I can't just close for two weeks while a gym finish dries. I need a non toxic finish that is ready to use quickly. Three months ago, we bought a 1911 bungalow with hardwood floors under the wall-to-wall. The floors were in bad shape-- dark areas, some water damage, places where the boards had been (badly) patched. We got three quotes for sanding, stripping, sealing and replacing some boards (I think about 15 boards) in our living room, dining room, and hallway. The Floor Show quote was $1400, which was around the same as one other company, and several hundred dollars less than another. I was impressed with Mike's knowledge of (and love for) wood floors. He told us that our decorative trim was gumwood, which is unusual, and he encouraged us to leave the wood natural rather than staining it. We're glad we took his advice. The floors look great, so much better than I thought possible. You can't even tell where they were patched up. The Floor Show got the job done on short notice (right before Christmas, yet!) finished up on time, cleaned up after themselves, and left us with gorgeous hardwood floors. We were getting ready to sell our 1900 Edwardian condo in the Haight. After we got all our stuff out for the stagers, we found that after 17+ years without having properly refinished the floors before we moved in, two dogs, 13 puppies (yes we placed them all in good homes), and a teenager with a habit of storing wet towels under his bed, the floors were a disaster. I've known Mike Dunn at the Floor Show for 35 years and know his level of craftsmanship and pride in his work, so I called him the next day. Fortunately he had room in his schedule. The hideous cheap plastic flooring in our kitchen always looked terrible, and finally got so ripped that we had to replace it. The old flooring underneath was not usable, so I was almost resigned to installing yet another ugly plastic surface. I got an estimate for real hardwood floors from The Floor Show, figuring I would just find out what it cost, but not really expecting that I could afford it. To my surprise, their price to install wood floors was less than some of the quotes I got for vinyl and fake wood. The two young men who did the installation were friendly, courteous, and did great work quickly. I decided to go with an oil finish that would give the floor an old-fashioned look to go with the rest of my apartment, so I had to vacate the premises for a few days, but it was worth it. The floor looks great, and is easy to take care of with just vinegar-and-water mopping. It really makes our kitchen look so much better, and it works perfectly with the original hardwood in the other rooms. The Floor Show was the only company willing to come out and give a decent estimate for this relatively small job--all the rest had "minimum" charges. In April 2012 I asked three companies to bid on stripping and staining our hardwood floors at our house in Berkeley. The first two bids gave me a standard proposal for stripping, staining and two coats of sealer. When Mike from the Floor Show came he spent a good amount of time really looking over all aspects of the floors before his quote. His quote was equally competitive with the other two but he took a completely different approach. He showed me what the original color of the wood was in a few areas and suggested we strip the floors to that original wood color and do NOT stain the floors. He suggested we take the savings from not having to stain and use that money to do four coats of sealer to protect the floors for the next 15 years. So his quote was the same as the others but we got so much more value for the money. The floors look absolutely fantastic! Mike is a real pro, he really understands wood, how it wears, and how to best approach your specific hardwood floor project. And he was on time and very easy to work with. I highly recommend him. Last month, Dec. 2011, we had Floor Show come to our house and provide an estimate to replace badly dog-stained boards in the front and dinning rooms and refinish the entire hard wood floor. Their estimate was fair and accurate. In fact, they came slightly under their estimate and they finished the floors as per their estimated timetable. As we were not sure which color to stain the wood, they placed four stains on the floor enabling us to see the color under the different lighting conditions. As a result, we are very happy and extremely satisfied with the choice that we made. The company also has a checklist not only detailing what they will be doing with an estimated timetable, they also have suggestions regarding the proper care for the floor which extends the life of the finish.The floors look fantastic.
