Mugi is a true professional. Shows up on time, works fast and meticulously and did a fabulous job on refinishing my old oak hardwood floors. They are gorgeous and perfect. Plus I kept changing my mind on what I wanted when it came to stain or no stain, gloss or satin. He gave me expert advice and I am glad I listened. I am so happy I went with him, I got about 5 quotes and his prices are beyond fair! I wish I took before and afters to show here. read more

Incredible work ethic. Beautiful work. Happiest anything has ever made me in the work I've done to make my Berkeley pre-1900 brown shingle, full of legacy wood, look and feel better. Mugi refinished badly stained existing oak flooring, put in new oak flooring, and cleared a room's floor of a bad paint job to expose and refinish Douglas Fir. I see the poor reviews indicate that Mugi required follow up. That was true in my case as well but that's not uncommon in the world of getting work done on a house. And once Mugi commits he's a very clear communicator - no regrets! read more

Mugi and his brother are floor wizards. He gave an extremely well priced quote, had the wood I wanted, and got the job done really fast. It was not the easiest space to work with, but Mugi took it on with no issues. I LOVE my new floor. It is so beautiful and solid. My house was left shockingly clean - I was sure there would be more dust. Thank you so much, Mugi!! read more

We were so pleased with our experience with Mugi. His quote was clear and reasonable, and he helped me understand upfront what challenges might arise. We hired him to install new red oak in half our home and to refinish some existing red oak in the remainder of the house. He seamlessly blended the old with the new and it looks incredible. They started right away and moved quickly; finishing the whole project in under 2 weeks. I would highly recommend using Mugi! read more

Mugi was the best of all worlds. He was cheaper than other quotes but then did an amazing job on quality. He was able to text and communicate about ordering the materials and helped pick them up. He is old school get the job done and get it done right. read more

One of the things that struck me most about Mugi was how he came across as an artist more than a contractor. We ended up hiring him for repair work after a backed up drain flooded the house. I had gotten multiple quotes, including one from a guy that originally redid our floors when we bought the place in 2019 and had really impressed me. However, not only did Mugi outbid him, the floors came out beautiful, and he did most of the work himself. I also want to comment that Mugi was excellent at communicating throughout the process, which really helped as we were making some adjustments along the way with all the other contract work that was being done parallel. read more

Great professional. Timely, knowledgeable got the job done beautifully and on time. It was great working with Mugi Hardwood Floors.

We discovered that water had been seeping under the carpet at a door & there were rotted, moldy floorboards underneath. We wanted to replace the flooring asap and Mugi did a great job for a very reasonable price. He tore out & took away the old carpet, made repairs & installed new vinyl plank flooring all in one day. Very happy with the results and the total price. read more

Mugi recently did a great job refinishing the wood floors in about half our house. We had a pet issue in one area, and I had hoped that the work would simply return the floors back to what they looked like before that. But after Mugi finished, the house looks truly stunning, much much nicer than before! Had I known this would have happened, I'd have had the floors done ages ago. Mugi's prices were fair and he got the work done quickly and on schedule. I plan to ask him back to finish up the rest of the house next year. read more

The quality and craftsmanship of Mugi's installation of a 3,000 sq. ft. white oak floor in our church's 75 year old sanctuary was far beyond our greatest expectations. Mugi was professional in every way--cooperative, communicative, considerate, and thoughtful. He always did what he said he would do, how and when he said he would do it. His attention to detail was remarkable. His quote was far below the other three local quotes we received. His solutions to the numerous inherent challenges of rejuvenating our historic building demonstrated exceptional experience, creativity and an authentic commitment to listening. We asked for a floor that would last more than 50 years. We believe he gave us just that. He will be the only flooring profession we ever call again. read more

I had Mugi re-do my kitchen floors with oak strip flooring salvaged from a house in El Cerrito. The install was quite complicated. I had removed most of the old flooring myself (all 3 layers...), but part of the original linoleum was still stuck to my subfloor, leaving an uneven surface. I also had lots of corners, and he let me choose exactly how I wanted the border. He put down paper to even the subfloor, picked the nicest boards from my pile of salvedge, and did a lovely job installing and refinishing them. I love my kitchen floors! He also used a few of the boards on another house nearby that needed repairs, which I though was cool. What else can I say... The price was great, especially after I saw how much labor he put into making the floor lovely. I am SO glad I hired him instead of attempting to DIY! read more

Mugi did a small job at my home installing EVP flooring in a basement kitchenette. He was prompt, efficient, and did a stellar job in installing everything quickly, and his pricing was very competitive. He wore a mask the entire time he was here. I am absolutely pleased with the work that was done and would recommend his work to anyone that asks. read more

Professional, knowledgeable, efficient, hard working. Our floors were in horrible shape. The subfloor had failed in numerous spots, resulting in gaping holes. Other areas had water damage and extensive scuff marks. Our hardwood floors needed a lot of work. We contacted numerous contractors and very few were willing to even take on the job let alone give us a fair price. Mugi came in, took a look, and gave us a clear and concise assessment of everything that needed to be done, and provided a fair quote. He laid out a detailed plan and provided insight into why and how he was going to approach the work. Mugi and his crew showed up everyday on time, ready to work. He answered all our questions, and walked us through every step. In the end, the floors turned out great and we were extremely satisfied. read more

Hi, I'm back with another review, since my mother's place turned out so well, I hired Mugi to do my downstairs 2 bedroom basement apartment in my 110 year old home. Mugi did a great job putting in new flooring in one room of our house. The room had original hardwood floors that were beyond repair, so he installed red oak to match the rest of the house. He was communicative, friendly and professional. He explained everything that we asked, and presented clear options to us when any questions came up. Our schedule was a little up in the air for a while and he was flexible with us, and finished the job right when he said he would. I'd definitely recommend his service. read more

I reached out to Mugi in order to determine if he could work on my squeaky floors. He seemed very knowledgable and arrived at the appointment on time with all the tools needed to determine the problem. After leaving the appointment, we chatted via text a few days later to determine the replacement floor pieces. After I asked for a quote via email, he went silent. He hasn't responded to my text nor calls over the past month. He isn't the only flooring business that I has come out to my home to provide an estimate that hasn't provided an estimate. I'm not sure if my job is too much work but it would have been a courtesy to be told "we're not interested in this type of work at this time". read more

I'm not a Yelper, but I do use Yelp from time to time to crowdsource opinions from random strangers when paying relatively large amounts of money for a relatively important service. The first and last time I left a Yelp review was 2 years ago for our wedding photographer. She was just that good. So let me reassure you -- Mugi's Hardwood Floors is also just that good. We had a fairly typical flooring project: refinishing the oak floors in an old, small house in the East Bay. The small 1920's Craftsman we recently purchased had original white oak hardwood floors underneath the laminate and carpet (and linoleum in some rooms, gross) that we pulled out. But as you might expect, the floors were in pretty rough shape. There were sections of rotted wood, gaps between boards all over the place, a handful of spots that had received hasty board replacements, creaky boards all over the place, and remnant holes in both the oak floor and the subfloor leftover from long-ago previous wiring systems. I reached out to about 15-20 flooring contractors to ask about our project. Some took one look at the photos I provided and recoiled in horror, insisting that our floor wasn't salvageable. Others said that they only do refinishing, not the extensive repairs that our floor would need prior to refinishing. I ended up getting quotes from 5 of them, and 3 came out to look at the project in person (including Mugi). And we ended up going with Mugi because he impressed us by demonstrating the most responsiveness in communication leading up to an in-person project scope, as well as his attention to detail during the walk-through itself. He pointed out red oak boards that had been installed as shoddy replacements for the white oak floor at some point in the house's past, and tested various boards for thickness and strength. His quote was a bit higher than the other two contractors who came out to look at the floor, but we figured he'd provide a better quality repair/refinishing job that would end up being worth the slightly higher cost. And worth it it was! Mugi mapped out his work schedule and confirmed it with us beforehand, showed up on time or early for every day, and we couldn't believe how quickly he and his partner worked. On day 0, he dropped off replacement boards and we gave him the keys to our house (he'd be working in the house while we were still living and working from home in our apartment). On day 1, he completed all repairs and replacements. On day 2, he completed sanding and had stain samples ready to show us by the end of the day. On days 3-6, he applied the stain and then applied the 3 coats of finish, each 1 day apart. The finished product looks amazing -- especially considering how rough it looked before. Mugi was fantastic to work with, and was always promptly responsive via email and text. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend him and his business to anyone else I know who needs hardwood floor refinishing, repairs, or replacement in the Bay Area. He is completely deserving of his 5-star reviews. read more

Mugi is a miracle worker. I had a guy do my floors who didn't know what he was doing who somehow made my 100 year old floors look worse than before the refinish job. He had stained them a hideous dark color. Mugi was able to remove the bad refinish and make them look practically new even though the floors are 95 years old. I can't recommend Mugi enough-he's responsive, on time, and does a great job. He was also comparable in price to other bids that I got. read more

In 1999 I bought a house with floors damaged by dog urine. My solution was to seal the dog urine smell with shellac and put carpeting over. 21 years later I contacted flooring specialists to see if it would be possible to remove the carpeting and restore the hardwood floors underneath. Most contractors moaned and groaned and thought it would be extremely difficult, and one contractor even refused to even give me an estimate. Luckily, I called Mugi and now I have beautiful floors that look new. I couldn't be happier thanks to Mugi. read more

I hardly provide reviews but I wanted to share with others on my experience working with Mugi Hardwood floors. Mugi came on time to look at my floor and email the estimate the next day as promised. His price is very competitive and after looking at all the positive reviews from Yelp, I was sure it was a good decision to give the job to Mugi. He and his worker came on time. They helped me moved my furniture to the carport in no time. Start working on the living room and dining room floors. They also took out the hallway tiles, cleaned and managed to saved the hardwood underneath! They are very professional and reliable. I left my house while they were working on the floors. He cleaned up the areas every night after work. He is honest and he noticed a small squeak in one area and brought to my attention by telling me he will fix it. I'm so happy with my beautiful hardwood floors! I highly recommend Mugi Hardwood floors! Trust me, you will never be disappointed. read more

Mugi did an awesome job restoring the Douglas fir subfloor in my kitchen. It looks amazing now - wow! Who knew that a gorgeous floor existed under 80+ years of linoleum in my old bungalow. Mugi was super responsive from the start. When I called him he gave me a quote over the phone and came out right away to check out the floors. He offered to move all my appliances out of the kitchen which was no easy task and something other service providers told me they would not do. He was able to come out and do the job within a week of me contacting him and everything went very smoothly. He is kind, considerate, meticulous and hard-working. I spoke to many different hardwood floor businesses and he was by far the best! He does excellent work and I highly recommend him! read more

Mugi was the best small contractor I have dealt with in the Bay Area, bar none! I have dealt with a number of contractors over the past 7 or 8 years, helping my son manage a series of projects to repair and upgrade his older Berkeley home. Mugi was better than any others I have dealt with - and by a big margin! Mugi quickly provided a fair quote to install hardwood flooring in a bedroom to match others in the house. He quickly advised his availability. AND HE SHOWED UP WHEN HE SAID HE WOULD! Mugi did exactly what he said he would - in terms of scope and schedule - and he did top quality work. He used quality materials and all the proper tools. He didn't make a mess and he cleaned up after himself each day and at the end of the job. He worked very quickly on consecutive days so he was in and out. And he completed the job for the price he quoted. The finished floor is magic! And to top it all off, Mugi is a really nice guy with an interesting personal story! If you have a hardwood flooring project and want a quality job at a fair price, you couldn't hope for better than Mugi. (This may sound like a paid advertisement, but it is not - this is a true testimonial!) Thanks again, Mugi! read more

Mugi was pleasant enough when he came by to give me an estimate. I tried to hire him, but maybe he didn't like the time-frame for work hours. i work overnights so i did require a late starting time. Our floors were the worst ever--water spots, pet accident deep stains, cracks, sun damage, buckled boards, etc. Mugi did repairs like the craftsmanship he is. He was able to remove and flip over boards to avoid having to match new pieces to the original wood. He sanded till the whole floor was perfectly smooth and imperfections were gone. After the stain and coating were applied the floors look like I imagine they did back in the 1920s when the house was built. We couldn't we happier.
