These people are so nice, especially Christopher! They mostly rent construction equipment, but we live in the neighborhood and often need to rent chairs and tables for parties and meetings. Last week I realized, at the last minute, that they were about to close for the day. I ran down and pleaded for chairs! They unlocked the door and got me the chairs, even though it was 15 minutes after closing time. This saved us from great embarrassment! They rent broken and dangerous equipment. Imagine wasting your morning renting, picking up, and driving your equipment to the job site only to find out that it doesn't work. They showed me a replacement and it didn't work either. The throttle was stuck. This kind of equipment could maim or kill someone and they rent it out nonchalant. read more

I've been renting tools here for the past 15 years, probably a few times each year. I've never once had a bad experience, or a bad tool. They're conveniently located in between the Dimond Dist and the Laurel, in Oakland. It's always a painless and fast transaction, making me get to a job faster. The tools are always mechanically sound and if they have a blade, it's sharp. They send you with a gas can filled with gas too. I can't say enough good about this place . RESERVES THE RIGHT TO DISCRIMINATE I turned up at Oakland rentals Saturday morning to rent a 14' A-frame ladder I needed to complete a job. Just as I was about to pay for it, the outside attendant I'd informed prior about needing the ladder came in and relayed to the man behind the counter that the 14' ladder was too long to transport on top of my car. The man behind the counter was just saying the law states that transported items on a vehicle can't extend more than two feet past the length of the vehicle in any direction, so it was put to me to rent a 12-foot ladder instead. I did so, even though I had my doubts it would be sufficiently tall. But I had to be on the job site soon, so I capitulated and agreed to the 12-footer. While the transaction was being processed the man behind the counter expressed doubts about me being able to properly secure the 12'ladder on top of my car. I found this presumption to be mildly irritating - he hadn't seen my car so why was he saying this?. Nevertheless, I assured him I knew what I was doing, finished paying, then went outside to meet the attendant, who then helped me raise the 12' ladder onto the top of my car. After tying it up, I visually examined the ladder and calculated that I actually did have enough play-room for the 14' ladder. But time was ticking and the bill had been paid, so I crossed my fingers and left for the job. When I arrived at the job site in El Sobrante, it became clear that the 12' ladder wasn't tall enough after all (as I'd suspected). I then had to reschedule this brand new client for the next day and returned the 12' ladder little more than an hour after renting it. On the drive back from El Sobrante I had time to reflect on the events that morning and it occured to me that had I been male and showed up to rent a 14' ladder (all other things being equal), there would have been no issue - no belittling discussion about whether I was sure about what I needed or knew what I was doing. How do I know this? Let's just say a woman knows when she's being stereotyped after 47 years of dealing with this type of behavior from un-woke men practically on the daily. Of course, upon returning the ladder I reasonable expressed my frustration with the situation -that I felt the event reflected poorly on me with a new client. But before I could even finish talking, the man behind the counter who'd given me push-back earlier cut me off mid-sentence, saying "Alright, alright I don't want to hear it, ok okay, I'll refund your money". I was taken aback - not just by the interruption, but by his choice of words and his condescending tone, and I expressed as much. I didn't want my money back - I just wanted to rent the 14' ladder for the next day, but I couldn't get a word in edgewise. So rather than argue, I just let him process the refund and decided I'd avoid this location altogether from now on, and simply go next day to their sister Berkeley location. The next morning (Sunday) I called Berkeley Rentals and learned they are in fact closed on Sundays. So due to budget constraints, I had no choice but to return to Oakland Rentals for the 14' ladder. On the way over I consoled myself that maybe the guy I'd dealt with yesterday was just having a bad morning... and hey, "everyone deserves a second chance" - I mean really, how bad could it be? Well, when I arrived I was greeted by the same man behind the counter with "So you came back, hey?" Ignoring his smirk I said "Yes, I'll take that 14' ladder today, please". Then he says to me with that same condescending tone "You know, I don't know if I want to rent to you today after what you accused me of yesterday - you really ticked me off". I was shocked. I hadn't accused him of anything at all. Seems he was conflating patiently made observations with accusation? Then he points to a sign over his shoulder that reads "WE RESERVE THE RIGHT TO REFUSE SERVICE TO ANYONE FOR ANY REASON" and said, "I'm not going to rent to you". It crystallized for me in that moment that his attitude toward me was irrational and untenable, so I turned around and left. THE TAKEAWAY: It's likely that if you are a female unaccompanied by a man and you try to do business with this guy, you can, at best, expect to be patronized, and at worst, be discriminated against if you dare to challenge his ego by being CWF (Competent While Female). And dare I suggest also that my race the and/or androgynous choice of dress might have factored into his behavior toward me? One never knows the prejudices held by strangers. Bottom line, this guy's an asshole and won't be getting any more of my money... and doesn't deserve yours if you like to support local businesses who know how to treat people with dignity and respect. read more

I reserved a trencher for Tuesday morning I show up and the trailer doesn't work. So they tell me to come back in 20 minutes I come back 40 minutes later they said they don't know how long it will take so I say I will come back tomorrow at 7am. I show up the next day first thing in the morning and the guy tells me they already rented it out As a business owner it sucks to have to keep delaying your project because of a rental Company. I try to support small businesses but I'm better off with Herc Rentals. People are super nice but this is business not personal. read more

Sure there is an occasional problem, we are renting tools that are being used daily by the general public, but I find that the owners (who are behind the counter) go the extra mile when problems come up. read more

These guys are great. I needed to rototill in my back yard in the Oakland Hills. I rented a 7hp front tine tiller from here, got it home and the lever to activate the tines broke. I threw it back in my truck and brought it back and they set me up with a new one. Got back home and sadly the dirt was too compacted for the tiller. This was on a Saturday and it was too late to go back as they were closed. Went in on Sunday morning and they gave me the 13hp rear tine tiller. It's hydraulic and is a monster of a tiller. They are only open however for 4 hrs on Sunday and the next day was Memorial Day and they were closed. No way I was going to get it back same day. They said just have it back on Tuesday morning. So I had it for two full days but only charged me for one. They didn't charge me for the ramp I needed to get it in and out of my truck and didn't charge me at all for the front tine tiller. I live pretty close by so the back and forth was not so much of a hassle. They were great, the more powerful tiller totally did the job. Great service. This place is awesome. read more

The other day I'd rented a jack hammer one hour before closing. I was quoted $78.00 for a four hour rental. I was told it was OK to return the jack hammer in the morning. However when I'd returned it the next morning at 9:00am, I was charged $98 for returning the rental after 8:00am. From my perspective I was charged nearly $100.00 for a two hour rental. The proprietor refused to honor the original fee of $78.00. I will no longer patronize this establishment. read more

I just called in an attempt to rent a stump grinder and got the worst customer service I've ever experienced. (I have used Yelp for a long time, but this finally convinced me to register and write a review) To get to the area with the stump, I have to go through a small door. So, after getting quoted the rates (about the same as Rocket Equipment Rentals, also in Oakland) I asked for the dimensions of their grinder. The agent asked why I needed them and then just pulled a couple estimates out of nowhere. I asked if those were exact numbers or estimates and he confirmed my suspicions and said he wouldn't give me real dimensions. Not wanting to fight that battle, I asked for the model of the stump grinder so I could research the dimensions myself. He told me "It's a Honda." When I asked what model Honda, he said, "It's a Honda engine. Good-bye." and hung up on me. I called back again asked for a manager and was given him again. I asked if he was the manager and he said no, his manager was out - even though the previous receptionist said the manager was on a phone call before transferring me to this guy. So I explained again, I have a small space to fit the equipment through before I get to the stump, and I need exact dimensions to know whether it would fit. After telling me he didn't know the dimensions or the model of the grinder, and that he would not locate them, he hung up on me again. The whole experience was surreal. read more

We needed to rent a thatcher and they had it, the prices were very good and the service was fair. For the price paid and convenient location I am very satisfied with Oakland Rentals. If there's a fuel deposit and you return the tank full, make sure you ask for your deposit back upon return. I'm not sure they would have refunded the deposit without being asked. read more

After contact them few times and assuring that it was taking care of, my next amex statement still show the charges(over a month to fix it). I have amex dealing with them direct, and still waiting. This business is DISHONEST! I went to Oakland Rentals to look at their floor buffers/polishers for my soft wood and stone tile floors. According to the manager, these machines are intended for home use. The one I looked at was pretty substantial both in size and weight. After watching the manager demo it for me, I gave it a try. It was very difficult to control. A slight downward movement of the handle immediately moved it in one direction and a slight upward movement of the handle moved it the other way (extremely responsive). And it was easy to lose control. I told the manager that I had very narrow spaces in my home with a lot of furniture and/or cabinets to maneuver around. Given that I couldn't control the thing in their large shop area, I thought it imprudent to take it home. He insisted that I would get the hang of it and that it was very easy to use. I reluctantly agreed to rent it and purchased several pads (he told me to return the ones I didn't use for a refund). I also inquired abut the polisher's weight because it seemed quite heavy and he told me that it weighed about 45 lbs. O.K. I can do this. My daughter weighs about 45 lbs and I pick her up all of the time. When I got home, I could not lift the polisher from the car (one of the guys at the rental place had put it into my car). It was extremely heavy. Fortunately my husband was home and, with a lot of trouble, got it up the stairs (hurting his back). We later looked online and found out that it weighs 90+ lbs! I wanted to try out the polisher in the largest area of our house before progressing to the smaller areas so I started in the master bathroom which is quite large and open. Controlling the machine was very difficult and I did not feel comfortable. I felt as though I could make a small mistake with the balance and do some serious damage to our furniture or cabinets. So my husband, who is really handy and is always rebuilding and repairing our old house, gave it a go. He too had great difficulty controlling the polisher and after a few minutes gave up. I immediately called OR and told them that we couldn't control it and therefore couldn't use it and that it would be returned. When we arrived, the manager was very rude and after much questioning about whether we had 'used the pads', agreed to refund our money. We received the paperwork for the refund and left, but after checking our credit card statement, it appeared that he had cancelled the refund and actually charged us for the rental and all of the pads! Of course we have disputed this with our credit card company and we do have the paperwork to prove it. This is a really unprofessional way to do business. We'll never return. Buyer beware! An update...they did credit our account after we had disputed the charge. read more

I reserved 25 chairs on Thursday for a party on Sunday. I was to come by and pick them up Sunday morning. When I first got there they didn't know what I was talking about and simply shrugged and said they had no chairs. There was no "Sorry sir" or nothing like that. The attitude was more like "Not my problem dude". I had to ask the man to check his computer. He did after I asked him three times......apparently he felt that since there were no chairs why check? His computer confirmed my reservation. There are two points I want to make. One, when some one wants to rent 25 chairs they are having an EVENT. The failure of the Oakland Rentals to properly manage their business has a big effect in this case. Secondly, I ran a small business for over 30 years. I'm very tuned into what that takes and how to do it well or do it poorly. These people do not know how to run a business. Their messy reservation organization spills over into the look of the place.....which is also that of a mess. No doubt this messiness also effects the condition of the tools they rent out. read more
