Sadly my recent experience trying to return something I bought just two days prior with a receipt was such an unpleasant one that I will not be returning. The manager insinuated that I was lying about what an employee had told me about the return policy, and made a point to tell me that he would accept my return "this one time, but never again." I came in from the rear parking lot and was passing by a young lady. She didn't greet me, no biggie, but I acknowledged her and asked for kitchen & bath caulking tubes. The kind lady directed me that they were upstairs. Grabbed a few caulking tubes for a shower door installation nearby. Then went to the drill bit section and obtained 2- sets of tile drill bits, as yesterday I had 1- Bosch drill bit break on me. That sucked. Luckily, I had another brand tile drill bit..Milwaukee Diamond drill bit and it got the job done. Thanks, Milwaukee for your newer Diamond drill bits. Now headed back to the plumbing job to complete. Thank you to the gentleman also at the cash register. They all were very helpful today. Thanks, again. I always frequent this place for parts when I'm in the vicinity. I was walking around downtown Orinda on a pleasant day. I needed air filters for my furnace. I walked into the hardware store, and an employee said "May I help you?". I told them what I needed, and they had two employees take me to where the air filters were located. One employee in front and one following behind. The one following behind was definitely invading my personal space. I'm pleasantly close. I got the air filter and walked to the checkout, and still the employee was closely following me, kinda pushing me out. This is a stranger tailing me 1 foot behind. I paid them and left and yes, the guy followed me out of the store. I was not dressed badly-- whatever that means. Even if I had looked like a homeless person, you shouldn't treat other human beings so poorly. I have since taking my thousands of dollars of purchases at hardware stores elsewhere, and I will never go back. read more

This is a great local hardware store. It is well stocked and always has that odd battery I need for my alarm system every year, as well as the odd size filter I use for my furnace. It's great for parts for irrigation as well as paint, tools and so many items. What I really like about Orinda Hardware is the customer service. I have been a resident of Orinda for over 50 years and Orinda Hardware is my go-to hardware store in the area. While the store is not overly large, they have an amazing selection of hardware in Orinda. The convenience of selection close to home is the main reason to go to Orinda Hardware first, to meet my hardware needs. I find the staff is friendly and knowledgeable, which is not always the case at Home Depot. Patronizing a local store and supporting young people working in your local neighborhood, makes a lot of sense. read more

On 10.25.24 I was parked in the garage in downtown Orinda to see a film. My next stop was Castro Valley to see a play but I found the battery was dying on my car key and the key itself wouldn't work in the lock. I finally got the battery to open the door and called this hardware I found on the Internet to ask if they could help with the battery. Yes. The website showed they were closing soon. Then the validated ticket to get out of the parking garage didn't work. Eventually, someone came to help and open the gate. I left the parking garage not realizing that Orinda Hardware was just steps away. I circled the block looking to park and found a space behind the hardware. I ran around the block and found the nice young man I'd called. He calmly helped me by opening the key fob, finding the right battery for my key, and replacing it for me all the while the store should have been closing and the young man enjoying a Friday night with friends. Whew! He helped me and I made it to Castro Valley in plenty of time for the play. I am sooooo sorry that my current problem of forgetting names has hit again because this young man was so patient and kind to help me. I hope karma pays it forward for him. read more

This is a great store, with really helpful employees, especially Manuel. Not only does he greet me with a smile every time I stop in, but he went out of his way when I was shopping for materials for a science project. He looked up how to do the experiment when I wasn't sure what I needed, made suggestions for what I should and shouldn't buy, and helped me and my daughter figure out how to make electricity from a lemon. During the Camp Fire, Amanda Smith (an employee) posted on Nextdoor that Orinda Hardware received a shipment of N95 masks and asked folks in the community to note 1. how many masks they'd like to reserve and 2. their contact info. Went to the store first thing the next morning, and the cashier had the reserved masks grouped and ready to purchase. The staff was patient, friendly and answered all questions re: respirators. this store is terrible - 1. a customer next to me asked a question and was given a comlpetely baffling incorrect answer and then they "uphold" her based on what they said. the product they tried to sell even stated on the bag it was not to be used for the purpose recommended. 2. they send a mailer with their address and then never have the advertised product in stock. 3. then they fill the area next to the sale tag with a similar product at a 20% higher price and then just ring it up. Classic bait and switch. 4. prices are anywhere from 10% -20% higher than Home Depot. I have been to this place 3-4 times over the last 6 months - plan never to return. read more

I came inside this store to purchase a roll of wire. The price on the shelf which matches the description of the roll of wire being purchased stated a price of $109.99. They tried charging me $212.00. I showed the salesman the price tag. He removed the price tag and said that he cannot sell me it for that price. This is illegal, classic bait and switch. I wish I would have meet this Walter dude instead... I do a fair amount of projects that require me to go by the Orinda True Value if I don't want to head to a big box store. I am fairly handy so I usually know what I need and will find it myself in the store. I recently had to ask for some help at the front counter. I asked for three items and were told they didn't carry two of them and were out of the third. I decided to poke around anyway and found one of the items they "didn't stock" and the item they "were out of". A point in the general direction of where this type of stuff would have been more helpful than lying. "I'm not sure, let me ask someone" would be 100% understandable too. That turned me off for a month or so and then I had to go back for something else. I found 2/3 items I needed and had to ask where they kept heavy duty trash bags. There was a man restocking an aisle so I asked him. "Excuse me, sir?" Guy doesn't stop restocking or acknowledge me asking him a question. "Excuse me. Sir?" Looks at me without saying anything. "Uhhh, okay, can you tell me where I can find heavy duty trash bags?" "Next aisle", he says and goes back to restocking "Which one?" We're in the middle of the store! Still turned away, points super irritably to the aisle to our right. I get it, retail sucks. I don't expect you to know where every single thing is. But don't lie about stuff so I'll leave you alone. And if I am asking for something within one aisle, don't be a jerk about it. I don't need you to show me where it is, just tell me the general direction! Service seems to have gotten worse within the last year. Not sure if it's a budget issue with staffing, training of new staff, or just not having the candidates to hire in the first place. I'm sure I'll have to go in for something else for convenience sake at some point but if I actually need help, I'll be avoiding the Orinda True Value. read more

Time was when you'd enter Orinda True Value only to be met with scowls & disdain. You frequently had to interrupt a conversation being held between the staff to get any help, and then it seemed to be given begrudgingly. I live in North Orinda but would often drive to Orchard in Moraga or Home Depot in Emeryville simply because I didn't think anybody at True Value would have peed on me if I was on fire. That time has gone. The surly, despondent, unaccommodating staff has been replaced with cheerful, helpful people who actually seem to know what they're talking about. It's like a breath of fresh air. I will no longer venture far and wide if I have to ask for advice or am not exactly sure what I'm looking for and don't want to be scorned for it. Thank you to whoever was responsible for this change, it is most definitely welcome. It's 4 stars instead of 5 just because it's a smaller store and might not have every possible variation of everything, although when you add in everything that's downstairs they've made pretty good use of the space and more often than not I wind up finding what I need. read more

We inadvertently came into True Value as we were walking by and saw the really cool train set in the window. My son insisted going in and taking a look. He had such a great time playing with the train set. Its a great place to stop by with kids if you are in the area. Top notch service and great dealing with Walter at True Value. I was looking for a Bbq Grill and Walter patiently explained to me their selection and what my options were including special order if I desired. I ended up buying a Webber that was a special purchase and on sale, and Walter not only delivered it for free, but he arranged for a technician to come over and install the natural gas line for me. Although the initial part was different size and required an adaptor, the technician went back to the store and rushed back to complete the task. This am Walter personally called me to make sure that everything went well. Overall, this has been an amazing experience for me. If I need anything, I know Walter at True Value Orinda will be my first call. read more

This local, small-town hardware store looks and smells like the real thing, but don't be fooled! The manager is a swindler who gives small business owners a bad name. His staff are mostly young women, and they are helpful, solicitous, friendly, but unfortunately lack the power to prevent their horrible boss from rudely ripping off his customers. I shopped there when visiting friends, because I like to support local, non-chain stores. On crutches, I needed help to locate items and was assisted by staff to my car. Before and after my purchase of an electric kettle, I was assured that it would be returnable, with the receipt. I asked several times because it was a gift. Yes, no problem, I was told repeatedly. When I returned with the kettle, in its original box and with the sales receipt, a few days later, the manager glared at me and refused to refund or exchange my purchase. His reason? The kettle was "not defective" in his opinion (even though it failed to shut off and whistled incessantly), and therefore was not returnable. I tried to politely discuss my options, but he rudely cut me off and looked at me with open disdain. A few more unpleasant comments from him, and I was out of there. His well-meaning employees huddled sadly together, looking ashamed and contrite. I limped away with my dignity intact, but left with the promise to write a negative Yelp review, clutching my unreturnable" kettle close. Do not shop here!! read more

I've only gone here a few times, but the staff at this TrueValue are always very helpful and upbeat. The price for their hardware is fair and it's clear they care about the customer experience. They have a large supply of home improvement items and fill the shelves on both floors with parts for almost any project. Glad we have such a great hardware store in our neighborhood. read more

I agree that the employer should work at least some of the time, and on a regular basis, because hardware stores should have an expert handy. It would be awesome if the hardware store offered classes or a way of renting an expert. That being said, they do have a really cool website, which features a 3D interactive house. This interactive house, allows you to click on bubbles that show you how to improve that area of your house. With this website you are able to learn about how to do something for free. The only problem is that the employees even after I mentioned my idea of hosting classes, did not tell me about the website. It is possible that website was created yesterday, for all I know, which explains why the employees did not tell me about it. Given that the Orinda Hardware store has a website, and a top-notch one, I like the hardware store. Despite the website, it would be very good if one day they had more experts on staff, and they either offered classes in the store, or in the community center. read more

Geezzz . . . what a struggle. OK - - I'll give them the benefit of . . . maybe . . . it was a hard day but it wasn't easy for me as a customer!! Luckily I live in El Cerrito so I don't need to shop here again. I shopped here cuz they were able to order in a special product and - - when I called to confirm my item had arrived, I was told "it's behind the front counter." 'Course, the inexperienced person who was there when I arrived couldn't find it . . . and finally another staff member found it in the back. The manager [I guess], Tom, had told me the cost was $9.99 over the phone but when they rang me up it was $11.99!! Who's running this store??? After ringing me up, I left the store and . . . had a hunch to . . . check the price [of all the other items I bought as well]. Yep, you guessed it - they charged me 2x for the special item!! At least they knew how to refund my card when I returned . . . but I was wondering!!! Then, checking the sales receipt 1 more time back in my car, I found another error!! They had charged me 2x for 1 item in place of another item of similar value. Gezzz - I had had enough at that point - and given the current COVID-19 exposure, didn't wanna go back in, so just called it even. Won't return to this store even if it's the only place that can special order what I need [I'd rather just go without the item!!]. read more

Orinda Hardware used to be my favorite hardware store but it's been going downhill lately. I don't know if management has changed but many of the old staff seem to have disappeared and the new have very little useful knowledge of what they're selling. And worst of all the new crew plays what appears to be dance music over the store sound system and cranks up the volume. This makes the store very unpleasant to be in. So now I head over to Orchard Hardware just down the road in Moraga even if it takes me a few minutes out of my way. Finally! Doing so much better...whew! Thought they were going out of business. No more crappy staff! (I had refused to go in any more because that "one guy" creeped me out.) This hardware store could be a great hardware retailer in an area that is woefully in need of a good, reliable source for household hardware items; and, where the items should be in stock. It appears that the owner or owners are not present or involved in their store so the semi-dedicated, but young staff is left to fend for themselves. The employees appear to be well, non-standard for a typical hardware store. They can assist and some will try, but there is minimum effort and a here-it-is, take-it-or-leave it approach to finding items or getting a little bit of basic assistance. A much better and better managed alternative is the Ace Hardware in Lafayette at 3311 Mt. Diablo Blvd. The major problem with the Ace Store is the fact that they only have about 10 parking spaces so you are on your own for parking. read more
