This is my nearest hardware store 3 mins from home but I now prefer to drive 25 min to Concord Home Depot. The service is quite poor and I constantly have to track down anyone in any department for service. Today I stood around in the paint department for 15 mins with no one in sight and simply walked out. I don't get it since this location has a captured audience and making a killing with their small hardware margins. But their staff are very young and don't have the perspective of a busy homeowner. I'm so impressed with the customer service at this OSH. The guys that are there, from younger folks to retired experienced ones, are very helpful and kind. It's like getting a small town experience in a large retail space. It's the best of both worlds! The first couple of times I was there, it's seemed empty and I wondered whether they could stay in business, but that was in the middle of a weekday. They do have much more activity and salespeople around in the earlier mornings and later afternoons. I had to go there to buy netting for a project. They have rolls of different kinds of netting sold by the foot and even do screen repairs. They just have so many things there that there is a lot more variety and volume than I excepted at a corner of Moraga. Had I known, I would've driven all the way from Oakland just to vibe here, before we moved close by! read more

OSH used to be known for its extremely knowledgeable and capable associates. That knew their aisles very well and gave great advice. They were always patient and focused. Under this new ownership, unfortunately it's a whole new ball game. And not a great one. They used to be some older fellows that were former contractors and super knowledgeable. Valspar paint is really good paint and this place has it. The manager was in a hurry as she dispatched me to someone who in the end was unable to order anything out of stock. And when I asked for the manager, I was told she "left the store." That's funny because she had a clipboard in her hand and looked pretty busy when I first saw her. I am a small business store owner UPS, single woman (round the corner) in Moraga. I bought this store in April, 2023. While the invoicing and our businesses etc were running smoothly, I had told my employees in Moraga UPS store to continue business as normal. It was not until Dec 2023, when I started paying attention to details on invoicing that I came across. There were a few payments incurred by OSH employees that no one had paid for during 04/2023 to 07/2023 since Dec 2023. We had no contact email, so I came by to the Moraga store in Dec to meet with John Fritzler (in email below) who stated that I should direct the invoice to him at that time. Upon receipt, he asked me to send him the invoice details on each of the line item invoices that were owed by OSH. Unfortunately, due to technical issues I was not able to turn his request over immediately and it took me until today to get him the details. There are now details for each line item provided in the statement sent to him! He called me with an extremely rude tone and was loud and obnoxious and did not even allow me the time to say hello or how may I help you. Did not give me any time to explain anything at all! Was loud and extremely very overpowering. He wanted an explanation on my "Danville" reference in the invoice and wouldn't let me speak. That is my corporation's address(that's all). When I asked him if I could explain, he started yelling over the phone! All your charges are only from the Moraga UPS Store. These invoices are in the system and the invoice system is connected to it. OSH store owes us money and we are a small business! He threatened that he will call my UPS Corporate and I explained to him that these are independently owned businesses, so they will not be able to help him. I requested him multiple times to please take care of my payment when we spoke. He refused and threatened me and when I stated that I will report you and your behavior to your boss, in response he stated "I am the corporate, where do you think your call will be routed to when you call?" He is a bully and a narcissist! Please help raise a voice against him and how he doesn't want to pay for services he incurred at my store. This is extremely unfair and unprofessional! I will continue escalating this to if I need to to get what is owed to my small store from services incurred by the staff of Moraga. read more

What a great store and great experience! Everyone worked as a team to make our experience enjoyable. We stopped in to shop for patio furniture and a gas fire pit. Our experience started with Russell helping us out with all our questions in regards to the fire pits. He gave us his advice based on his personal experience with the product which was helpful in making us feel like we were making the right choice. Then we went over to look at the patio set we were eyeing when we walked in. Here comes Kevin, he was so nice! We were worried the fire pit would be too tall for the patio set so he measured everything out for us. He also helped measure our car to make sure it would fit. But we were sold! When we went up to the register to pay Don was so friendly!! We went around the corner to pick up the furniture out the back. Greeted by Henry Kevin and Mike. The box ended up being a snug fit so rather than coming back with the truck Henry suggested free delivery! Henry and his coworker (who's name I didn't catch) came to deliver our furniture a few days later. They were nice and professional and brought it to the backyard for us. Guys, thanks for all your help!! Please give all these guys the applause and appreciation they deserve! Even though we live in martinez we have still been back a few times since to shop just based off our experience! And that time Russell was there again to give recommendations on more lava rocks for the fire pit. read more

We were at the Moraga store to purchase an electrical cover. I bought in the damaged one to compare. As soon as I entered the store a wonderful person guided me to the aisle for the display. Russell Bumes was the person who helped me again to figure out the correct cover to purchase. His knowledge in the various covers was a great help in determining the best solution. I went to this Outdoor Supply Hardware in Moraga this morning to purchase gardening soil. I took one of the old bags to show them since the last time they couldn't find the right kind and the guy who was in there, very rudely told me to go and find it myself. Today I paid for 4 bags inside the store and asked the cashier if they have the right kind and he said yes. I went to the back of the store to get them. When I got there, I saw the bags were on the ground and nobody was there to load them to my car. I finally found the guy in the back and asked him to load the bags and he said NO. He said I have to do it myself. I got into my car to go and talk to the manager. The guy started screaming at me: "I brought them out here for you and you don't want them now?" I told him that I'm going to talk to the manager. Then he said OK he'll do it and he threw the bags in my car with such anger. I asked him why he didn't want to help me? He said: "It is the store and their insurance company's policy." I went back to the store to talk to the manager; she was as rude as the employee. She never apologized for his behavior and just said that she will talk to him. I have given them 3 chances, but I will NEVER go back to this store. They are bunch of rude and incompetent people. read more

This store supplements the excellent Moraga Ace hardware across the street, turning the little town of Moraga into a shining hardwaropolis. For those unfamiliar with the "new OSH," here are the Cliff's notes: Orchard Supply Hardware (real OSH) was bought by Lowes. After a few years, Lowes decided to close all OSH stores, even the profitable ones. Some entrepreneurs got the idea to identify the stores that were profitable, and reopen them. They changed the O to "outdoor," but left almost everything else the same. The store layout is almost identical to the old OSH, with some slight differences. The tools are better, and the garden section is worse. General hardware is comparable. Prices are all over the place... most deals are good, but there are items that cost like 2-3x what they should. It's a good idea to price-check things against Home Depot on your phone, just to make sure you're not getting gouged. The employees do a pretty good job, but if service is what you're after, the Moraga Ace is a much better option. read more

tl/DR: Terrible managers, and no intrest in improving. Convenience, nostalgia, and a few helpful employees are what this store has going for it. The selection is worse than Orchard had in many of the departments and while there are some deals, most things are very overpriced and it's not unusual for things to be 2 or 3 times as expensive as Ace or even Safeway across the street. Some employees are lovely, but some of the managers are by far the worst I've ever encountered. Last year I had to have a manager help me and for at least 5 mintues while I was standing next to him while he worked on the computer, he cruely trash talked with an employee about the employee that initially tried to help me and openly mocked him while they knew I could hear them. (The employee they mocked was very friendly to me and actually saw me at Trader Joe's later that day and checked in to make sure my problem had been resolved.) On top of that, the product they ended up selling me (a $200 product) was defective. Cut to a month ago, I went in to see if they had something that could work as replacement wheels for a push cart, and when a manager that was watching the CCTV saw me put the small axle I had brought from home back in my shopping bag, he came storming into the area and insisted "I know what you're doing and you need to leave." I was completely confused because I wasn't doing anything; I had been in the store for 5 minutes and hadn't even touched anything. He escalated to yelling at me when I tried to figure out what was happening. Eventually he let me go back to shopping but implied it was my fault for not asking for help if I brought something from home to compare the sizes. (I've never had to do that at a hardware store before and they don't even sell what I brought, how could I have stolen it?) When he saw me later he demanded to know what I was "doing now" and after I told him he gave me a fake happy "let me know if there's anything else I can help you with" before speeding away before I could respond. I contacted the company to let them know that I was incredibly unhappy and that they should offer better instruction to their employees or they were going to keep driving away customers. That was almost a month ago and the only acknowledgment I got was the automated message confirming they got my comment, so I really don't think they care to improve their customer service. read more

Am very happy OSH is back in Millbrae. Their service is outstanding. There seems to be plenty of knowledgeable staff on hand across all departments. Have been there three or four times in the last couple of weeks and it is a great experience. Pricing is comparable to other stores but the personal touch is well worth it to me even if it cost a few cents more. Went over to my brother and sister for Mother's Day. They had planted beautiful plants the had gotten from OSH the other day. . They are doing good things, check them out if you haven't already. read more

I was having a bad customer service experience trying to make a return, a small item, 9$, that became a crusade. The clerks were helpful, but the manager was non responsive. Nolan, a clerk, noticed my frustration as I was leaving without having been able to return the item, and stepped in. He calmly listened to my side of the story, and reminded me kindly that they were short staffed but he would do his best to help. He managed to efficiently process the return, with the manager's help by phone. I really appreciate your action and your manner, Nolan. Your manager is lucky to have you. -the grumpy guy read more

I live a block away and won't go there anymore. The store went from Orchard Supply Hardware to Outdoor Supply Hardware and changed both in name and service. This has been years. Getting yelled at and then reprimanded by an elderly employee last week because he tripped over a piece of lumber I was trying to purchase while I was checking out (and helping the cashier look up the item in her product book) was the last time for me. As CeeLo Green would say: Forget You. I can get most of my hardware needs met at the Ace hardware store across the street; drive to Lafayette for a larger selection at the Ace store there, and buy outdoor plant stuff at Orchard nursery, or just do both at the Ace Hardware in Walnut Creek. It's a big hardware store with reasonable hours, and at least one of the employees is nice... I'd been buying compost & soil amendments from a few different sources -- Ace Hardware, Orchard Nursery, and this store too, once before. At each store, they had me pay for the stuff, then someone would bring it out to the car, and even load it into the car; seems pretty intuitive. But this one time -- only the second time I've gone to Outdoor Supply Hardware, the cashier, a middle-aged guy, seemed utterly flummoxed at the idea of someone paying up front and then an employee bringing it out. Even multiple huge, heavy bags of soil and compost that would block aisles and be a struggle for a lot of customers (like me). He just couldn't figure it out. I showed him the item & SKU, etc., on my phone, but as he became more confused about how someone pays up front, without having the items in hand, I noticed his mask hanging below his nose. So, I just adjusted myself back a few feet -- but, he wanted to peer yet again at the item on my phone, requesting I bring it closer. So I matter-of-factly said I wanted to hang back a bit because his mask wasn't on. That's when rudeness replaced his confusion. He said something snarky about me to his co-worker and had him ring me up instead, as he stalked angrily away. Nearly 10 minutes later, the co-worker came out with the cart with my 3 huge bags of 3 cubic feet of garden soil, and a bag of mulch. This young man stopped the cart and said, "Here you go" -- no offer to help load it into, or move it closer to the car. I must've looked kind of shocked because he quickly mumbled something about his manager wanting him back or something. I feel sorry for the young guy if he keeps getting put into these weird situations by that other guy, who might be his manager -- though it's hard to imaging someone so rude and clueless could be a manager. Then again, lots of organizations haven't figured that one out yet. So, this store is a real mixed bag. read more

They are well stocked but man, they are clearly not managing the customer experience. One of the redeeming features of Orchard has always been the customer service. Perhaps it's just Covid keeping the more mature folks away- makes sense. Hope this changes at things normalize. I approach the checkout and say good morning as I present my item. No response. Okay. I use my credit card and pay. The young man hands me the receipt while looking out the window. I take it. Pause. No response. I say thank you. No response. I leave to find the product on Amazon for less money, delivered. At least Amazon says thank you. If my experience was pleasant, I wouldn't have price checked the item. Training people, training. I'm not a Moragian, but I grew up nearby. If this level of customer care persists, the store will get closed by the guys at corporate. read more

I'm going to be honest and say I have missed the old OSH tremendously. That was my jam and nothing has been the same. Until now. What a great experience today with Adriana, the assistant manager. (I am really sorry if I am messing up your name.) Actual customer service! She was so helpful, searched other stores for an item, discussed other options, measured something I had a question about - this service is what I've been longing for. I purchased a patio set that I may not have tried if she hadn't suggested it. So comfy and being delivered tomorrow! We are thrilled. The store is clean and well organized. The nursery had fresh plants and the lady stocking (apologies - did not get her name) actually knew about plants! What? They carry a lovely selection of soils and really nice gallon sized plants as well as six packs. This store is about a 30 minute drive for me, and I'll be making it because of the service I received. read more

I was in need of a small, temporary shed. I made the foolish mistake of going to OSH to purchase it. To say it was cheaply made and designed by someone who had never assembled one is a vast understatement. I could go on and on about it's cheapness, but it certainly was not worth $300. I have 20 years as a builder of unique residences, went on to do three tech startups inn the 1990s, the last ending in a successful IPO. In retirement, I built furniture for my home:(https://www.congodog.com/congodog.com/PIECES.html) and am considered a master woodworker. When I got to the torturous end of assembling this thing, I find their parts package was short on the necessary screws. I went to the local (Moraga) store for more parts and just out of curiosity took a look at the display unit upon which mine was based. Of course the roof joining system was dissimilar to the piece of junk I had. The display shed roof required fewer screws, but I guess the Chinese (made in China) guy responsible for such details missed that difference. I explain the situation to their front man and he "charged me for the missing parts", which were different but I made them work. This is the third time I have had to return/replace purchases. We live in the neighborhood and visit almost every weekend to find what we need for whatever project we might be working on. Honestly- their selection is wonderful. They've got stylish outdoor plants & planter options, any kind of home or outdoor supply we've ever needed and most importantly they've got a team of knowledgeable employees who are super friendly and consistently give us the right advice / guidance to achieve whatever our project goal might be.   Moraga is a really well run store that's always our first stop (rather than HD or Lowes). You should absolutely pay a visit and when you do, please say hi to Tammy, the store manager. Tammy goes above and beyond, is insanely knowledgeable, great a brainstorming through ideas, and always provides us with the MOST AMAZING customer service. Horrible service, every time I walk in I make eye contact with the register and no one greets me in. This most recent time I came in I needed keys copied. I asked the nearest worker and said I need help copying keys. She said nothing and shrugged me off and at the time I thought that was her way of telling me she will be with me in a minute but then I waited 10 minutes and she was still over doing the same thing so I asked again and again she looked at me and continued to cut her wire so I went and found someone else who was reluctant to help me. Customer service was great. And I was not there to buy a big ticket item. I was trying to repair an antique cradle and needed four screws. Shane suggested that I bring the cradle into the store, and then he and Torrance put the right size screws into place and tighten everything down. Women should NOT go to this hardware store, it is a very hostile environment. I usually love to support small businesses, but my experience in the store clarified why sometimes it's just better to go the extra 20 minutes to Lowe's. One of the employees followed us through the store and finally asked if we were just "taking a look around."
