This was our second time here. The first time was to select the proper type of wood for our needs. Tony helped us with selection of wood for our project. Also we brought a sample of the size that we needed. Tony told us the amount of sheets of plywood needed and that we could pick up our cut wood the next day. I received a call from Tony stating that my order was ready for pickup. I arrived and was instructed to pull up to the shed where a gentleman helped load my order into my SUV and I was on my way. I worked with Eddie and Tony at Dolan in Pinole to purchase exterior siding, composite decking, and railings. Eddie and Tony were great to work with. They helped me understand the pros and cons of redwood, James Hardie, and radiata pine. I ultimately purchased redwood siding and Eddie helped me place an order for custom-milled wood that perfectly matches my original siding from 1950. The new siding looks fantastic and blends perfectly with my old siding. Eddie and Tony were also flexible and went out of their way to help me. I changed my mind at the last minute about the color of my Fiberon composite decking and they allowed me to change my order with no problem. They also made sure I got all the proper hardware from Fiberon, which was tricky. Overall, Dolan Lumber was invaluable for my whole house remodel. Great service from day one to the delivery. Took care of us right away and showed us the product before purchasing. This place has a variety of product from nails, trim, tools, and etc. What blew me away was the gentlemen who delivered my wood saw i was stressed out holding a bandage and baby yogurt in my hands for my daughter said "I see that you have your hands full I will take care of everything just point where you want it". Helpful, courteous, and knowledgeable staff compared to some box stores. I can't believe there's only a handful of reviews of this store. I lived down the street from them for 20 years and my dad used to always go there for all his hardware and lumber needs. Since moving a city away we had two encounters lately with Dolan's in Pinole the first was to replace a sliding door with French doors. Service was excellent but ended up with a different style with another company. Oh and my 2yr old son was gifted a book of stickers while we were speaking with the staff. How cool is that? The second was a phone call to inquire on 12 ft posts to install a 20x20 wind sail. They had 6x6x12 in stock and they were able to deliver the next morning right on time. I recently needed a new front door for a house I am renovating, and got frustrated with the various choices in the big home center stores. I had questions but I couldn't find anyone available to help me. I decided to try Dolan's in Pinole and am so glad I did. I got lots of helpful advice and my questions answered. Jeremy Wilson was the person who helped me with that first door and was very knowledgeable and kept me informed on my order. It went so well that I came back again when I needed an odd sized door for the kitchen. Jeremy came to the rescue again and found me the perfect door with a fast delivery in just a couple of days. I wish I could write a good review of this place but I didn't have a good experience. I had tried to get a specific door from Home Depot but the contractor they sent to measure said it wouldn't fit. He recommended I try Dolan's and had nothing but high praise for them. He told me to ask for Robert, which I did. I explained what kind of door I wanted. After a few minutes of discussion, he said he might be able to get something like that specially made. He questioned the contractor's measurements and told me to go home and measure the door, the contractor had only provided the frame measurements, and to call him back. His attitude was a bit dismissive, maybe he didn't think I was a serious customer, but I was prepared to spend at least $1000 for the door. I called him back within 30 minutes. He said he would call me back in a day or two with a quote. I had a feeling that was a lie. I was correct, I never heard from him again. I decided not to pursue doing business with them as the feeling I got during both encounters was he really couldn't be bothered. Oh, and I asked about the free estimates and measuring mentioned on the web site and he said they only do those sometimes. read more

These folks are great. Yup, prices are often more than you pay at Home Depot -but Dolans knows their stuff. They (gasp) make recommendations, help find the hard-to-find item, help the DYI folks do it right --AND have good quality stuff. The folks who work there are funny, quirky and helpful. Some good, some not so good. I'm familiar with many local building suppliers, home improvement centers, hardware stores, speciality showrooms, etc. This Dolan's is hardly anything special to write home about, but there's nothing severely wrong either. It's just another small store in a small slow community. Recently I bought a large window here. It took over an hour for the guy to place the order over the counter. Prices are similar to other places that can order windows and doors. They just charge less for local delivery ($35 for the 5.3 mile, 12 minute distance, which is hopefully not a one-time low ball quote). When my window arrived after two and a half weeks, however, it was actually left outdoors on their open truck overnight for at least one night, maybe two. It was all wet! In fact, they didn't follow through in telling me as soon as it arrived that it was ready for delivery. I had to keep asking. Communication was extremely cryptic in both email and over the phone with the guy -- always just one or two word responses. This was the most unnerving part. It was a vinyl window though, so I figured maybe no damage. I only hope water didn't seep into the gaps in the frame and sashes. Delivery was otherwise prompt, and the item was exactly as specified, so it was okay. The real nice thing was the helpful delivery driver. He was willing and able to go out of his way, so I tipped him $10. He deserved it. This was the best part of the whole purchase. Any larger store would've had drivers too busy to care, and also charge too much for the delivery of just one window. So there's some plus, some minus. At other times, I've found good lumber at competitive prices here. But too often they just don't carry what I need. Clerks have always been friendly. read more

I wanted to replace my exterior doors. Dolan's has great selection in their showroom. Their staff are super friendly and helpful. I worked with Jeremy Wilson, and he is TRULY AMAZING! He was so patient and knowledgeable. From start to finish, it took me about 6 weeks to navigate the surprisingly complex world of doors and make a decision. Jeremy was with me all the way, even with changes and my evolving criteria. To start, he sent me links to at least 5 different websites to give me a good sense of the different kinds of doors that I could choose from. The myriad of choices was exciting, but also quite daunting, so I appreciated how he listened to me as I articulated what I wanted and how he provided his expert knowledge about what products might work. I wished I knew of this place sooner. I really liked the family feel and was happy to learn it was still family owned. If you have a project and don't check these guys out you're a fool. They charge less to deliver than H.D., have long sizes of lumber the box stores don't carry and better quality. The Big thing though are their suggestions. They saved me over $100 on my last project and showed me how to build it better and easier than I had planned. I always come here to get lumber - whether it's PT or redwood, they always have guys helping pick just the right board, that's straight without a bunch of knots - they custom cut dogear, bevels and grooves for almost next to nothing. Oh Hey!!! It is a pleasure to be able to write this review! We LOVE the people who all work at Dolan's Lumber in the San Pablo, CA location. For nearly 2 years, we had some pretty large and small home building and construction projects going on and Dolan's staff all jumped right in to help make sure all our requests were addressed. Nearly everything had to be delivered and each time, within the time frame they indicated and every experience in this area was rather fun and added that extra bit of "greatness" to my day. We even had a large delivery where a fork lift driver and equipment had to deliver 5 full pallets of concrete back into the interior area of our 1 acre property... this all went off nicely and with ease. It's like the crew at Dolan's could all be part of our family and we could invite them over for Thanksgiving Dinner...not that we will do that but hey, they are all so friendly and really helpful. We'll be ordering and visiting the store long into the future and they deserve our 5-STAR Rating! And my hubby just reminded me as I read this review to him... When he went to make a large payment for a purchase I had called in over the phone, my hubby forgot his pin number to his bank card. The customer service guy, "R..." didn't get impatient or bent out of shape.... he patiently waited for my "guy" to call the bank to help get things squared away so the payment could be processed without any glitches. Oh... and the guys that help load the car... they all are exceptionally friendly... Excellent customer service and great advice! Searching big box (so-called discount) stores for items in my home has been a nightmare! Although, my home is less than 25 years old absolutely nothing that's the standard off the shelf at a Home Depot, OSH or Lowe's ever fits. Dolan's is a throw back to when your local family owned business was your first and last stop. I bought a large quantity of window and door trim for a remodel. Tried Truitt & White and Ashby Lumber, but their selection of samples was very sparse and their assistance was worse. Finally found Dolan's on the internet - it was worth the drive to Pinole. Colleen knew all about the casing and baseboard lumber and she was very helpful. Also, the service was fast and the stock was well organized. My contractor got me a quote from Economy Lumber, but Dolan's had an even better price. By far the best service, and even the best prices. I will definitely shop here next time. read more
