I had plans and permits for a large 6200 sq ft home in San Rafael. I provided all the details to three different companies. Golden State Lumber - Berkeley Economy Lumber - Oakland Ashby Lumber Door & Window After several attempts I could not get the guy at Ashby (Rich Ginn) to do a little work and quote me. I then did all the take off's myself and sent him an excel list. He still did not quote me. Economy lumber quoted slightly higher. Paul at Golden state Lumber helped me out, asked the right questions and priced it out best. A lot of Marvin windows and doors. Decided to give these guys another chance since they were the only window showroom open on a weekend. Got a quote from their window showroom. Took a while to be seen, even though the reps were not busy, but fine, and eventually spoke to someone who was very helpful. I received a quote for the windows we need, but figured we'd compare pricing at several (4) other lumberyards in the area. For the exact same windows and configuration, Ashby was almost exactly 30% more expensive than nearly everyone else. Prices varied slightly of course, but Ashby was by far the most expensive. Was nice that they were open on a weekend to look around, but wouldn't recommend purchasing from them with that level of markup. read more

Absolutely terrible experience at the door store. The salesperson we worked with made an error telling us the door stiles were solid wood and we could drill into them. That led to us drilling into foam on our brand new door. Due to the saleperson's error, Ashby Lumber replaced the door for free. This time we decided to let them drill the holes for us so there would be no possibility for confusion. We could not have been more clear of the problem and the need for the lock bores to be drilled into the solid wood section of the door's "lock-block". Despite our clear communication, we had to refuse delivery of the second door as upon arrival we saw that the bore holes were again drilled into the foam-core part of the door. I then escalated and started communicating just with the manager. The manager was so condescending. He told me "I can tell we are not going to be able to please you", implying that our most basic requirement that the bores not be drilled into foam was an excessive requirement! I quote that he said to me, "well, I am not a door expert". I was confused about why he was telling me he was not a door expert when he was the manager of the door department. They did refund our money after the second mistake. Well, note to this door department manager, taking our business to Truitt and White got the job done correctly on the first try. No comparison. Trying to complete a project these days is incredibly expensive, frustrating and stressful. We purchased five doors from Pete Ziss in July 2021. It's now May 2022 and we're still waiting for our last door to arrive! The delays were caused by supply chain issues, two manufacturing defects, and then a distributor made a mistake which caused yet another huge delay. Pete always responded to our calls/emails in a timely manner. He was sympathetic and understanding of our plight, and really went to bat for us. We feel lucky to have had Pete in our corner! He provided a level of customer service that you don't find often these days... Just last week we stopped by in search of hardware for a couple custom wood casement windows we were installing. It turns out that you can't order hardware separately from the various lines of windows that they sell, because that hardware is made for the specific dimensions of the window in question and isn't generic. But Brandon sketched out all our options, including both online and brick-and-mortar vendors. He even printed out maps! The result -- within a couple days we had found all the items we needed. I have been going to Ashby lumber for years, bought all kinds of hardware supplies there as well as toilets, faucets tools etc. Folks there are always very knowledgeable and super helpful. For someone like me that is really REALLY key. So when I was in need of a couple of new doors for a home improvement project of course they were my go to place. Really, what a great experience. Who knew there were so many types of doors, and details to have to decide. In the middle of our remodel I was kind of maxed out on really researching or making a choice out of hundreds. Enter Daniel. What a pleasure, we walked in, sat down with him, went over what we were looking for and where the doors would be in the house. He got right to it. Instead of having us looking through endless samples, narrowed it down to just a few choices. He also did NOT try to upsell us on anything. It was so refreshing. Clearly he really knows all the inventory and options and was able to easily just boil it down to what we wanted - BOOM! Showed us what we were looking for, and how to customize the doors for our project. Plus he is a super nice guy. Really knows his stuff, AND has a great sense of humor. Then when I went back to choose hardware, we did it over email. I sent him what I wanted, but then, very politely he wrote back and said, "okay no problem I will order for you, but are you sure you want this ROUND circle shape for the deadbolt? You do realize it will make your deadbolt had door handle look a little like an "i"?" OMG! So right. I went with the square one instead. Ordered the hardware via email, and then picked it up later. They also delivered the doors to the house, on time and in perfect condition. Oh and did I mention that the prices were more than competitive, given what we had randomly and fruitlessly been looking at before, he saved us money as well as time. We replaced about 20 windows in our house with Marvin Ultimate Replacement windows from Ashby Lumber about 5 years ago. Fast forward To Tuesday night and one of the retractable screen decided to no longer retract. It's been the only problem we had with our windows. I called Ashby Lumber to find out about getting a replacement part or how to fix the screen. I spoke with Jeremy Hodina. He was very friendly and helpful. He was so patient as I stumbled around finding the window serial number, even emailing a picture of what it looked like on the window. Once he had the serial number, he had all the details on the problem Window screen. He said he would email me a quote for a replacement. Much to my delight, Jeremy went the extra mile and called Marvin Windows the next morning. He spent time on the phone with Marvin discussing the retractable screen and to my absolute delight found out that Marvin would replace the screen under warranty including labor. He told them I had another window just like it, and they will replace that one as well. It would've taken me hours on the phone with Marvin to find the right person to talk to and I wouldn't even have thought to mention I had the other window screen. I love it when i come across this type of customer service. Avoid these guys at all costs unless you enjoy months and months of frustration and incompetence. We placed a major order (30+) of windows, and spent literally hours in the showroom with the sales rep going over the order with a fine tooth comb to ensure that each window was spec'd and then ordered correctly. Spoiler alert: they weren't. After all of that time and effort, when the windows were ordered there were "minor" details that resulted in a number of the windows arriving with problems and needing to be re-ordered -- details that I had personally painstakingly reviewed multiple times with the sales rep. Unbelievably frustrating. In addition to this, some windows were apparently mishandled by their delivery crew and arrived damaged and needed to be re-ordered. Again, so frustrating! And to kick it all off...the sales rep just forgot to order one of the windows - just forgot! When I called around the time the windows were scheduled to arrive to check on the order, I was told that all was well and on track. Then when I specifically asked about this window - it's a garden window, and needed to be ordered separately - the response I got was "Uhhh..." When I expressed my frustration with this, the rep assured me that he'd get right on it. Well, "get right on it" apparently meant "don't worry too much about it" to him, because then he STILL TOOK WEEKS TO ORDER THIS WINDOW, AND NEEDED FURTHER FOLLOW-UP PRODDING FROM THE CUSTOMER TO DO SO. How do you run a business this way? As if that weren't enough (seriously!), when we discovered that one of the major windows had arrived with an incorrect lite pattern and we pointed this out, the sales rep tried to tell us that no, he had ordered it correctly - and that if we wanted it to be correct, we were going to have to re-pay for that window - THAT WE ALREADY ORDERED CORRECTLY IN THE FIRST PLACE (and had the order sheet to prove it) AND PAID FOR IN FULL. Seriously - do yourself a favor and never, ever work with these guys. Unbelievably terrible customer service all the way through. read more
