This is a dependable standard to my cheap and somewhat healthy diet. The subs are good, if you know how to order them right (be very picky about what's put on, i.e. only a little sprouts) and they are fast enough. I like the mural on the wall (where the wild things are), very cute, great for kids (not that i have any). The staff has been surly at times, but generally, the guys in there have been nice and accommodating. Nothing to write home about, but just something that's decent and cheap. BTW...the brownies and carrot cake rock the house. It's so hard to resist getting them every time I go in there. I do keep waiting for the day i accidentally grab the "special" brownies, but that hasn't happened yet. besides, if you're working at TC, i doubt you are going to be willing to part with even a little bit of your stash, even as a joke. read more

I was reluctant to try this place because I thought it would taste like Subway. I can't even walk by a Subway without feeling nauseous because it always smells like vomit. But not Thunderclouds. This place is right around the corner from my crib, so I tried it after not being able to decide what to eat one evening. I think I ordered the California sub-it had bacon and avocado and some sort of deli meat. I went through the drive-thru and the dude working there saw that I was with Elroy, so he went and got him some bacon. Elroy now expects treats at all drive-thrus since he gets goodies at Sonic as well. I love thunder cloud and this one is close to my house, however every single time I place an order online (pre-paid with tip!) or call in my order they have never started my order before I get there. I have purposely waited 30 minutes to pick up my order thinking they were just busy but I When I arrived, as always, the store was completely empty, had three people working and they still had not started my order. They said they didn't see the order come through, but...I mean it's every time. The reason people order online is for convenience and to not have to sit there and wait, so it's a little bit frustrating. The food is average. The service is enough for me to pause when ordering though unless I have the time to wait. read more

NO GLOVES! Dirty, greasy hipsters in a small shack with dirty greasy walls, smudges and crumbs on the two tables they have, but if they wiped it it'd probably be with a dirty rag. The guy told me he washes his hands, that's why they don't need gloves. He washes them once a week after his dump, I'm sure. Extra charge for olives, pickles, jalapenos, etc. Each sandwich has two prices, one is for a 7 inch, and one a 10 inch, but you wouldn't know that because the menu doesn't tell you. I've lived next door to this Thunderclouds subs for 8 years and I just love the place. Everyone who works there -- and it's been a rotating crop for sure -- is always polite. They work hard, they get the food out quickly and they are fun. I'm sure this is a reflection of the owner/operator, but that's irrelevant when you're buying food :) Make sure you try the GIGANTIC brownies they make fresh there. Thundercloud is an Austin staple, and it is for good reason. I've had home-grown Austin friends assail me with stories of just how amazing thundercloud is, so I've been eager to try it. So I wanted a sandwich for lunch but I wanted something different than my usual sandwich shops. That was my first mistake. They had Pastrami on special. I was so excited. Until I unwrapped it. First it was on Whole Wheat not White like I ordered. I know I have an accent counter guy but there are no "R's" there. Listen up! Then he forgot the onions. Pay attention next time counter guy! I have been eating at various Thundercloud Subs locations for years. I have never had an issue with them, they are usually pretty solid. This location is disgusting. While I waited I watched the two guys make subs barehanded. Not a huge deal if you washed your hands, but during the course of making three sandwiches they touched their faces, pants, cash register, handled money and credit cards. The one guy rubbed his mustache 3 separate times. One of them full on stroked his giant beard mid-sandwich prep. I'm not a squeamish person, but I was so grossed out by this that I just got chips and a coke. read more

Me and my friend both went in here and explained to the guy how we wanted our meat and cheese heated up, which he said he could do separately. We also both asked for ranch on our sandwiches. This is my regular Thundercloud, which gets a visit from me at least once a week. Tuna is awesome and best in town. The California club (turkey, avocado, bacon, cheese) is also great. They have great rolls, always fresh and soft. Be sure to get the Thunder sauce, glorified vinaigrette but somehow way more tasty. My son loves the meatball. I also like their salads. They're just iceberg lettuce (not my first choice, would prefer romaine) but they're fresh and tasty, esp. with Thunder sauce as the dressing. All that goodness and it's a local place that's way better than national sub chains. read more

I like this location because it's the one location that does not eff up my order. It seems that the workers at all the Thundercloud locations are high when they're working... I don't know about this particular location, but at least they are making my sammich the way it should be! The price is good. The sandwiches aren't as tasty as a Quizno's, but I'm also not paying $10 for a sandwich, so it's worth it. I do enjoy the meatball sub, but for some reason, it gets the bread a little soggier than one would expect. They have specials. Having to come to terms with the fact that I can no longer eat a meal for $3 like I could when I was a little kid (unless you want CiCi's pizza or Gattiland) I'm happy to eat here because in comparison to the other sandwich shops I frequent I can normally make it out with my wallet intact. Thundercloud is quite alright, you know, if you're into sandwiches and soup. They aren't the best sandwich in the universe, but the best sandwich in the universe is not in Austin at all, sadly. Regardless, Thundercloud is solid and their soup is actually worth the money, unlike soups at various sandwich places. At this particular location, I really like the staff. They are friendly and funny without seeming fake. Place always seemed clean to me. I work nearby and eat there all the time, haven't gotten sick once. Great start. They've lots of local/organic/grass-fed etc options, which is awesome and clientele-savvy... Austin's pretty into that. They also have a drive-thru with extremely loud speakers, which is useful if you're trying to order something and funny if you're walking by. read more

I'll be honest, I've only been here once. I was so disappointed. I always try the meatball sub at any sub place. It's basic and easy. You can't go wrong with meat and cheese. Boy, was I wrong. The meatballs were lacked flavor and were really watery. I think they had the meatballs soaking. When I got my sandwich, the bread was soggy. The servers did look high, too. Eh, that doesn't bother me so much so long as my sandwich is made right. And to their credit they made my sandwich as ordered, they were quick and polite. The taste was what threw me off. I'll keep this simple: 4 stars for food, 3 stars for service, 1 star for sanitary issues. Food: I LOVE Thundercloud's vegetarian-friendly menu. Their nada-chicken subs are a God-send. Everything about the sub is downright tasty. It isn't up there with Jersey Mike's, granted, but it gets excellent grades for the vegetarian love and tastiness. Service: Pretty average. They do a decent job of taking orders and get you in and out in a relatively short amount of time. Sanitation: Terrible. THEIR SANDWICH MAKERS DON'T WEAR GLOVES. Gross, gross, gross. I didn't see hairnets either, and some of those dudes have some serious hair and facial hair. I haven't eaten there in almost 6 months, hoping they'll finally start wearing gloves. Thundercloud is a staple of my diet. Their cheap yet filling sandwiches have kept me powering through until the late afternoon. I live within walking distance to the Burnett location so I'm there a lot. I mean, folks, we know what Thundercloud is: your basic tasty sandwich, weird cashier and loud music and we love it! I will say that even though I often walk there, it's pretty sweet that they have a drive-thru. Tip: If you like avocado on your turkey sandwich, it's cheaper to order the california club with no bacon then simply adding avocado to the turkey sandwich. read more

I had high expectations going to Thunderclouds. When I went they ran out of wheat bread, so the start of my experience wasn't too great. The staff was busy (two guys) talking amongst themselves and seemed a little annoyed that they had to serve another customer. It was around 7:30 PM so I guess they were winding down. I dream about having a ThunderCloud sub here in Lubbock. This place grew on me like a small little piece of moss on a tree into a Jungle of greens that could cover the forest floor. It is just so simple and fresh. They aren't pulling any weird tricks like trying to reinvent the wheel. They just do things like have cool workers who provide fresh ingredients. I like that every single time when I come I can order the same california club, add alfalfa sprouts, take away tomatoes and it taste the same every time. No surprises just my comforting sandwich that I can always rely on. I personally think you are doing it wrong unless you get Mrs. Vickie's Jalapeno chips, put them on the sandwich and then use their homemade ranch to dip it all in. This Thundercloud looks like one of the oldest around town, which is usually an advantage in a city like Austin. Not so much at this location. The servers (evening shift) were checked out by 6:00 pm and barely passable as "friendly", and the food was definitely not satisfying. My boyfriend and I went through the drive-thru and ordered the broccoli/cheese soup and a roast beef sandwich on a gluten-free bun. The soup was like watery cheese, hardly any broccoli chunks -- and the chunks that were there were stalks, not crowns. The gluten-free sandwich bread was incredibly crumbly, to the point where it was difficult to hold and eat the food -- a sign that the bread was left out too long before serving. The roast beef and fillings were comparable to Subway. I could forgive a dead-faced employee, but the food was so disappointing that we'll probably never return to this location. We'll give the other locations a shot before writing off this local chain for good. read more

Thundercloud makes some truly delicious sandwiches. I've frequented this particular branch for several years. My two favorites are the NY Italian and the Veggie Delite with Hummus. Those are my favorites - but just about anything on the "Signature Subs" menu is great. What makes these sandwiches great are the fresh ingredients that are matched well. The freshly sliced veggies are never overpowered by huge amounts of mayo or a bad combo of other flavors in the sandwich. Order a NY Itlalian (with the roasted red peppers!) and you'll understand what I mean. They've got the best cold subs in town - hands down. Now for the only reason they aren't a 5 star sandwich shop - consistency. The staff is almost always friendly but you'll get the occasional sandwich maker who just doesn't get it. They'll pile on an excess of one of the ingredients or they will sloppily smear the avocado over only half the sandwich. Some people like it when their sandwich maker piles it on deep. I do not. The right amount of each ingredient is what makes the sandwich. So they lose that 5th star to their occasional sloppy sandwich maker. read more

Just like every other Thundercloud in town, this one has its own 'tude. The Maurice Sendak-inspired decor really adds something extra to this especially tiny location. I was reading some of the other reviews for this location and I got the impression that most of the complaints were related to the staff. I guess I've grown accustomed to the non-fuck-giving employees at Thundercloud, so I don't get bent out of shape if I'm not greeted with a smile. If you like their sandwiches, just go in and get one. If you don't like their sandwiches, grab a bite at one of the other literally dozen or more eateries less than two minutes away. My wife is particular about her Thundersauce, and they get it right at this location, so I'mma keep comin' back! read more

I live in Bastrop and all we have here is Subway, so when the opportunity presented itself I jumped at the chance to try the Thundercloud sub I've been hearing about on the radio. The person who took my order was pretty rude, no smile, sort of treated me like an idiot while asking me how I wanted my sandwich. I went and got a sandwich 15 minutes before they closed, but I am a fast eater so I knew it was going to take me less than 10 to eat it! Nonetheless, the guy who took my order made sure to remind me (twice) how much time I had left. "Only 7 more minutes." It was indeed an extremely uncomfortable experience. Not to mention that he had a sarcastic tone through out the whole order. I understand that he was probably tired and just wanted to close and go home....trust me I GET IT...but I feel its a lack of professionalism to make the customer feel incredibly awkward, not to mention rushed like if there was an eating contest!
