Every menu item has a unique sauce and toppings that usually don't need any addition of their great salsas. Some must-tries are El Picosito and Shrimposito (steak or shrimp in an awesome chipotle-sesame salsa macha) and Delibelly (pork belly in a spicy-sweet sauce). I also like to get simpler tacos like the Mexico City sirloin, Cowboy, Pollo Fundido and Freakin' Vegan and load up on the red or Dõna salsa. Really, they're all good. Taco deli is an Austin Classic. I have been eating here as long as I can remember. The restaurant is always clean and the staff are sooooooo friendly. I've been a loyal customer at the Spyglass location for years, but this location was shockingly disappointing in comparison. The quality control is completely inconsistent we were served raw chewy meat, undercooked rice, and brown wilted lettuce. Even the sauces were discolored and hard, which is just unacceptable. To make matters worse, the churro brownie was stale, hard, and dry, and the soda fountain had small black specks floating in the drink clear evidence of poor maintenance (I only noticed because I ordered ginger ale). I spent $50 for dinner for my friend and me, and we could barely eat any of it due to the low quality and food safety concerns. It was so unappetizing we didn't even feel comfortable trying the queso. This experience was honestly insulting considering how much I enjoy the Spyglass location. I've attached photos to show what we were served and sincerely hope management will make this right a refund or replacement meal would be appreciated. read more

I came to Tacodeli for the first time this evening!! I've had their tacos before at coffee shops but have not been into the main store until today. It was busy! Lots of families here - so the at tells me the food is good AND affordable! I was helped by Sunshine who was a total ray of sunshine they were so nice and we chatted like we were old friends. They really helped me feel comfortable ordering gluten free tacos! I ordered the cowboy taco with corn tortilla. It was delicious! I've had consistently great experiences with Tacodeli, but unfortunately, this particular location fell short in terms of customer service. I came in to pick up an online order and was left standing at the counter for several minutes while the staff member continued a casual conversation with another customer. There was no acknowledgment or even a quick "I'll be with you in a moment," which would have made a big difference. It's frustrating to feel invisible when all it takes is a moment of courtesy. I really hope this location can work on their customer service -- simple gestures like acknowledging customers and managing the line more efficiently go a long way. Roberto delivered their (now) 10 locations from Mexico City to Austin in 1999, and I've staked out all the proteins on their menu, although I'm told the Freakin' Vegan is TO DIE. I used to have to hit them up for a daily special to grab the DeliBelly - now a permanent part of their menu, and a crown jewel with its honey-glazed tender braised pork, green salsa and onions for crunch with cool avocado & cilantro to finish. Otherwise the Cowboy is my everyday winner with peppery perfectly marinated beef, a relish of grilled corn, caramelized onions and red bell, topped with their excellent guac & fresh cotija. There's any number of others to suit your fancy (breakfast, vegetarian, and vegan options too), but the theme of high-quality, locally-sourced fresh ingredients runs consistently across all tacos, at every location, without fail. Once, in the golden haze of a hungover Austin morning, I found myself at Taco Deli--a temple of honest sustenance, a brief and greasy balm for the existential vacuum. There were mornings when their tacos whispered poetry into the ruins of my body. But now? Now the place is a mausoleum where corn tortillas go to die fat, thick, and stupid. Let me say this plainly: the corn tortillas have ballooned into leaden, joyless disks--dense as the prose of a bureaucrat and about as nourishing. Chewing through one is like dragging your soul through a tax audit. There is no give, no music, no soft yellow lace of flavor. They are inedible coasters, designed more for supporting condensation than consumption. And the coffee--dear God, the coffee. What once was an ambrosial jolt of life is now a thin, bitter parody of itself. They've changed brands, they whisper as if that's explanation enough. Changed brands? That's like swapping out Dostoevsky for a corporate memo and calling it literature. It's acrid, metallic, with the bouquet of regret and the finish of defeat. I sipped and saw my future in it: sterile, joyless, bland. What madness possesses a place to abandon what made it beloved? To sink willingly into the quicksand of mediocrity? The tacos are now mere vehicles of insult, the coffee an affront to consciousness. Even the air inside seems heavier, weighed down by the ghost of what it once was. Taco Deli has become the kind of place that makes you question memory--was it ever good? Or was I simply drunk on youth and salsa? Perhaps.
