I've driven by this hole in the wall (literally. A taco truck has more visibility than this) so many times and have been intrigued by the plumes of smoke rising from the back. Finally I stopped by with a friend after a long bike ride and we took home a whole chicken to split. Um. Everything was DELICIOUS! The whole chicken came with soft corn tortillas, salsas, and a side each of beans and rice. An grilled/roasted (aka slightly charred) onion was wrapped up in parchment with the chicken, absorbing yummy chicken flavors that was pulled apart for tacos. Everything was flavorful and the beans were studded with bacon chunks in it. Yes, it was that good! The chicken was really flavorful. Very savory and perfectly charred. . It's mesquite grilled chicken but I don't think I've had anything like it.. Unlike typical American barbecue, this wasn't sweet at all. And I'm here to drop a knowledge bomb on you about it that hasn't been repped in my previous reviews: Carne Asada Tacos are a game changer. I sent a friend over there who was wasting away from hunger and starvation (or a hangover) and she came back without chicken. I was shocked. "What have you done? What have you DONE?" and then the most glorious little carne asada taco entered my mouth and the angels sung Selena. This place is a shady hidden gem! It's attached to a small convenience store and has limited parking and you would probably never go unless you were looking for it because of the location. But it's good. So TRY IT!! Authentic Mexican food at a great price and support generous portion! I came by on a Sunday night to grab a bite and got the #2 Steak quality was really good, it was a 10 minute wait but I was happy knowing that my food would be really fresh! It came with 6 tortillas and rice, beans, green suace, and salsa. It was simple food, but done right and fed two for only $9 so I'm happy! Unfortunately, there isn't much of a waiting area or a place to sit and eat, so expect to be taking your food to-go. Also it's a bit sketchy at night so be careful! read more

Just moved to Austin and ordered Pollo Regio for delivery. To say it was phenomenal would be an understatement. The standouts of our meal were the full grilled chicken, salsa verde, and salsa de árbol. But honestly the charro beans and rice also could have constituted and entire meal in and of themselves. The chicken was perfectly seasoned, tender and juicy with crispy chargrilled skin. The salsas were perfectly balanced, fresh, and flavorful. Omg and the thick, perfectly greasy tortilla chips, clearly made in-house . Absolutely phenomenal. We've already decided we're ordering another half-chicken tomorrow because two chickens in two days seems ridiculous, but 1.5 chickens... somehow more reasonable. read more

The chicken is still delicious and has been my go to take out for years. However, asking $20 for the number 1 (whole chicken) is too much. My boyfriend and I seriously are obsessed with this place. We can't eat here too often no matter how much we may want it though, because we'll fatten up with all the oil and greasy foods they have, but with the AMAZING combos they have for cheap prices and fast cooking times. It's definitely in a sketchy-area where my boyfriend and I get paranoid about walking around at night because we're super wimpy and the grounds are all icky but isn't that where you find the best food? I've tried probably 75% of their items and it's all oh so amazing, and the portions always fill me up and leave me with left overs. You drive up here, you order, and then you drive back home, to eat this amazing food alone and in silence, and also away from people who are about to judge the crazy amount of food you are about to devour. Plus, there's no seating out there, and it's much easier to sit in your house eating greasy comfort mexican food. I could probably make 2-3 meals out of my one meal since they're so stinkin' huge and I can't deny how much of my money goes to them, seriously, I can make them RICH with my business alone. P.S. This place is literally a hole-in-the-wall. I mean there is actually an old bank-style teller window which they slide open to take your order and they they give you your food through it a few minutes later. My coworkers say great things about the whole chicken and half chicken and even the carne asada. I'm not a huge fan of picking chicken off of bones, so I got the shredded chicken in between two tortillas and it was good, but the chicken was a bit bland and the salsa didn't help as much as I wanted it to. Maybe next time I'll just suck it up and get the half chicken and pick it off the bones to see what everyone else is raving about. Until then though, I'm skeptical. read more

The food at El Regio is decent but nothing to rave about. I think it's actually a chain with locations all over Texas. We went to El Regio about 7pm on a Friday night to pick up dinner to take home. We made a special trip because of the great reviews. We ordered a whole chicken. The chicken was cut into parts and wrapped in a paper bag, which was dripping with grease. Not surprised by the grease, just by the wrapping that allowed the grease to get all over my car floor. The chicken came with small containers (pints?) of beans and rice. They were measly quantities considering I wanted to feed a family of 5, which seems reasonable for a whole chicken. The containers weren't even full, and the beans were more like soup, with a lot of juice, some meat and not many beans. The green and red salsas were tasty, fresh and hot. The meal also included a grilled(?) onion. I asked the person at the counter how many tortillas are included with the chicken. She held up a pack of foil-wrapped tortillas and said "This many." I asked how many are in the package and she said she didn't know. I wanted to make sure there were enough for my family but couldn't seem to get her to take a second and actually count them. I finally just said to give me another pack of tortillas, which was only a $1. The chicken is good, though not as good as the red-colored, achiote-marinated Mexican grilled chicken that I was hoping for that's available from local joints in S Austin. The rice and beans were average in flavor and skimpy portions, as I already mentioned. The tortillas seem to just be store-bought that had been wrapped in foil and kept warm. Nothing special, not particularly fresh. In fact, I was disappointed that everything seemed to be packaged ahead of time, so not sure how 'fresh' it all was. At $15, the price was decent but you need to factor in a couple more $$ to get extra sides if you're feeding more than 2 people. I won't make a special trip to El Regio again but will probably try it again if in the neighborhood. read more

out of all the steak that's ever hopped into my mouth and melted into my belly, this was one the best. They have complimentary nachos (not the cheap kind) and salsa bar with habanero sauce! The portions were enough for two solid meals, with beans, rice, and tortillas. The somehow manage to run a fast food style drive thru and a classy eat in despite the building itself being kinda small. The charcoal roasted chicken is the only not slimy great tasting well seasoned chicken like what I used to get in Mexico. $5 per person is cheaper than most other fast food places and this is fresh and has not failed me once yet. After the aftermath of several El Regio locations closing-being converted-absorbed by the Borg, whatever..., I began to wonder if this particular location is akin to a lost battalion of Japanese soldiers hidden on some remote island somewhere, still under the impression it's World War II and waiting for orders (geriatric but still truckin'), only to be found by some drunk American fisherman who accepts their surrender and promptly forgets he did so the next morning...and so the cycle continues. The location is, by most peoples standards, the height of Sketch City. Attached directly to a liquor store where one can acquire an awesome array of Mexican sweets (seriously, yum), it has every semblance of a concession stand gone awry. The little chik'n ordering window appears to be cut out of the wall of a storage room, and if the wind is right, most of the building is obscured in smoke. This, I believe, is part of an elaborate defense system to protect the chicken secrets that dwell within this peculiar facade. At night, no doubt, you might be able to see the red laser alarm grid that surrounds the perimeter of the building. (Those could just be refracted tail lights, BUT STILL.) My ability to order the chicken is somewhat hindered by the fact that I speak precious little Spanish. I am reduced to silly hand signs in my desperation to communicate my hunger, oblivious to the possible offensiveness or chance of a misconstrued message. I care not...I'd do cartwheels in the parking lot if that's what it took to get the blessed bag of goodness handed through the port hole to me. After that, the language barrier evaporates, and all I wish to do is hug the girl within in silent thankfulness until one of the other chicken merchants begins to poke me with a push broom until I leave. What's that, you say? You can't believe anyone is that excited about a roast chicken? Then it's obvious you've never eaten at El Regio. And you know what? That's fine. More chicken for me. APOLOGY TO THE PEOPLE OF TEXAS At first I was going to name this "Apology to the People of Austin" but then I remembered that there are (were?) El Regios in other parts of Texas, too. Some background: I have an uncanny ability to make things disappear. The moment that I declare that I like a product, business, experience or resource, it tends to go away. Forever. Anyone remember a restaurant on Burnet named Tien Hong? About three months before they announced they were closing forever I had put it on my regular rotation and you could find me there at least once a week. I have "disappeared" anything from hair care products (I tend to get hooked on things, say Dove's original formula of Replenishing Mist, about 6 months before they go away forever) to entire car models (the original S-series of Saturn was the best EVER and I'm going to drive mine until it disintegrates because they don't make 'em anymore). Trying to figure out how to make some money off this skill... So I'd been reading reviews of El Regio for a while and meaning to try it but hadn't yet because it was usually on Sundays that I remembered that I meant to try it and they're closed on Sundays. About 3 weeks ago I headed out to the one off 183 having decided that this week, darn it, I was going to try one of those whole chicken deals. Then I got sidetracked and didn't make it. The next week, intending to try again, I looked it up on Yelp for the phone number to confirm their hours when I came across the Talk panic thread about El Regio closing. Apparently the one off 183 was one of the few left open in Austin, so I went today. Sorry. They're definitely all going to close now because I'm HOOKED. Tender, flavor-to-the-bone chicken. Fresh corn tortillas. The rice and beans....I knew to ask for extra green sauce from dear Yelp but if I ever get the chance to go again I will order extra rice and beans. The beans have tomatoes, jalapenos and actual fatback pork in them - FATBACK, people! The chicken comes with grilled onion - sweet, charred grilled onion that works so well on a tortilla stuffed with pieces of grilled, seasoned, tender (even the white meat) chicken torn off the bone and drenched with (I drizzled first, then drenched, and yes, even drank) that spicy, creamy green sauce. Lovely service at the window. The chickens are already packaged in white butcher paper (cut into quarters already, which I appreciated because it takes entire MOMENTS to cut/tear pieces off a whole chicken and that's too long when you're smelling something this good). So the service at the window (this one is a walk-up, not a drive through - careful in the tiny parking lot shared with a convenience store) was very quick and easy - the whole chicken/beans and rice/tortillas for 11.99 package is on the menu board as #1 so I didn't even need to speak Spanish. The rumor about the owner being indicted on drug trafficking charges? I don't know nothing about nothing, but the cavities of chickens can hold plenty of addictive substances I'm sure. I mean, how many times do you read that someone wants to dip their face in hot sauce? The chicken is great. They pack it all up so that there's little to no chance that anything will spill out in your car (or on my motorcycle), and it's ready in no time! NO time! It's almost a little scary how fast, but once you get it home or to where you're going, you'll be thankful you didn't have to wait longer than necessary for this tastiness. No veggie options here, my friends! The beans have not only bacon, but I've found chunks of sausage and ham hocks all over them beans. So, veggies stay away! Away from my chicken! Last weekend, I did a little experiment for my camping experience. Bought two whole chicken meals, put them in a cooler with cold packs. That night, I got everything out, heated up the beans and rice, and heated the chicken for a little bit on the grill. It didn't even get dried out. El Regio almost certainly isn't a front for a Breaking Bad-inspired drug operation... unless, that is, you count the straight-up addictive qualities of the food. I brought home a half chicken meal and let me tell you, no voluntary act of will could bring me to stop eating until the last bite was gone. Like my other experiences with Mexican charcoal chicken, the signature meat by itself wasn't sublime... not short of charcoal flavor but kinda dry. That said, I found myself picking every last shred of meat off the bone to mix up with the onion and avocado green sauce on a corn tortilla. I'm pretty sure that's the best creamy green sauce I've ever had. Not too bland, not too wolf-in-sheep's-clothing hot, but just exactly right. I'm also pretty sure those were the best charro beans I've had, anywhere and at any price. I don't know about you, but I've managed to find boring, perfunctory rice and beans at some of the fanciest and highly-touted places. This modest little food stand does not take those sides for granted. The beans were absolutely perfect, with enough bacon to keep your local cardiologist in business. The rice was delightfully rich, no doubt infused with a like amount of delicious saturated fat. I figure I'm going to regret trying El Regio the way a hopeless addict regrets taking his first hit. Regio is my favorite "restaurant" in Austin. It's just a window to order food with nowhere to sit, but the food is worth its weight in gold. Regio's medio pollo is the second best dish in Austin, second only to... Regio's baked potato, which I'd passed up a hundred or so times before trying (how good can a potato be?). My sister and I were near the domain and decided to try it out and the chicken very dry and no flavor and beans needed salt and the chicken needed salt and rice needed more color and flavor. After working for many restaurants, next time I cook I will take them some of my rice and chicken, if you get lazy just go home and cook. Since the we paid $21 and the chicken hardly had any meat at all, you are better off buying a chicken from HEB or central market and it will have more meat and only $8. This is coming from a cook and they need to work on there flavor for sure a lot more, I am not the type to throw shade but they need some help with the cooking for sure! When you show up to this place, do not be afraid of how sketchy it is. The food coming out of that small window in the side of a gas station can easily hold it's own against some of the best food in this town. I normally order one of two things, each a fantastic value at $9. Half a chicken. Always perfectly cooked and seasoned. Has so much flavor. Combine the chicken with a bit of the delicious cooked onion tossed in and drizzle some of the green salsa over the top of it and it is what dreams are made of. Skip the red salsa and ask for an extra green salsa, you won't be disappointed. The included beans are out of this world as well, easily the best in town. Papa Regio. This is a baked potato the size of a football (I'm not kidding). They take this magical potato and load it up with sour cream, butter and cheese. That would be good enough on its own, but then they PILE on their delicious carne asada until it is overflowing. This makes it even better.... but wait, there is more. They include a cup of their incredible green salsa to drizzle over the top. This just brings it all together. It's almost like a non-mobile roach coach. Mistake 2 Ordering two tacos, beef and chicken, and thinking I want to sample more to write more on Yelp. I'll just eat half of each and save the rest for later. Plus it's only $4 a taco. (Someone else stated it perfectly, that ain't a regular taco, it's more like a 1 lb fajita in a small corn tortilla) I opened one of the boxes and saw nothing but grease oozing everywhere. What do I do? Go in head first. I take some of the green sauce provided and ladle some onto the beef taco. I bite into it and it is GLORIOUS. I devour half the taco and a whole jalepeno and put the taco down. So far successful. I open the next box up. No layer of grease. Good so far. I unwrap the foil and reveal what must be half a chicken, a tortilla, and sour cream. I bite. Not as greasy, but not as tasty either. The chicken is a bit dry but it's tasty. The green sauce holds it all together. I bite. I bite. I bite. Aww crap I just ate the whole thing. Then eff it, who is gonna leave other half of the beef all lonesome. I eat that too. This is the best charcoal chicken I've had ever! The beans and rice were exceptional and the tortillas will melt in your mouth, so good and fresh that you could just eat them by themselves. There is no seating in this place, just a small window your stick your hand in and call out a number for what you want to order. And outcomes the goodness in a plastic bag with sauces of two kinds, a whole grilled onion, and rice and beans. Also has some fresh made tortillas in an aluminum foil wrap. I am so glad that our new house is closer to El Regio than we were before. $13 for a whole chicken, tortillas, beans, and rice? And it's ALL delicious? It's amazing.
