I love thundercloud subs, and on my last trip into Austin, I decided to find the closest one. It happened to be the one on Burnet Road by Anderson Lane. They were not crowded, which was good,. The cashier was friendly enough. My mistake was going into the restroom. It is nasty and other than a complete remodel, I don't see how they can make it any better. Also, their online ordering "goes down" at 7pm. It doesn't give you any message that it's down. After you've spent the time to input the order, it just doesn't go through. Ordered 5 different subs for a group of us for lunch at work and I had a coupon given to me a few weeks ago when I donated blood through We Are Blood for a free small sub. My coworker volunteered to pick up the order. He gets there and they refuse to take the coupon and say the We Are Blood gave out the wrong coupon and the coupon was expired. Come on, really. This was being advertised on TV and Facebook. You got all kinds of exposure and you're turning down a coupon for a $5 sub. Well I am not a regular customer nor will I become one now. The other thing is we ordered online 30 minutes ahead and they hadn't even started the order when my coworker showed up. He had to wait for the whole order to be prepared. Which meant it took him awhile and he barely had time to eat since most of his lunch hour was taken up waiting. My boyfriend and I ordered two subs, the Austin Club and the California club, and a mango pineapple smoothie. This was our first time at Thundercloud after hearing good things about their sandwiches. Unfortunately, we were sorely disappointed. We both ordered large size sandwiches and upon receiving them, we realized both sandwiches only had one slice of sandwich meat. My sandwich came with avocado, lettuce, tomato, onion and 1 slice of turkey. His sandwich had the same except with 1 slice of chicken breast. We were basically eating veggie sandwiches. The service was very subpar. The girl taking our order and making our sandwiches was nice enough, but everyone else was completely rude. They often shout at customers to get their orders and brush past you if you're standing in their way. We were standing behind the yellow line to get our order taken due to social distancing guidelines, and one male employee kept pushing past us, physically pushing past our bodies with his which not only violated the 6 feet apart rule but also is incredible rude. I guess this is one of those instances where the phrase "your mileage may vary" comes into play. Seems like I've been spending lots of time lately in various Thundercloud locations, and I'm happy to say that while this location isn't my absolute fave, I've eaten here enough to pass on what for me has been a predominantly happy vibe. Agreed that there are pseudo-emo staff at these places, but seems like I usually end up with nice ones; the dude that made my sandwich today was extra friendly, almost perky, even, which you might think would conflict with the Emo Credo. The guy actually made my day a little bit better. Case in point, the barrell-chested cowboy next to me was loudly talking on his Yugo-sized cellphone without a care in the world: holding up his sandwich maker, the people in line behind him and so on. And when my phone rang, it didn't occur to me at the time that what the cowboy was doing was an imposition...I was focused on my sandwich. So I asked the caller to call me back. I've been really disappointed with thundercloud lately...not just one, but several of the locations have seemed to go downhill in food quality and service. I was pleasantly surprised by this one though. We happened to be in the area, and wanted something cheap but healthy. Considering the other nearby choices were a mcdonalds, a pizza place, or a donut place, we opted for thundercloud. The guy making our sandwich was super nice. Amazing what a remarkable difference just that one thing can make! We tried the weekly special, the texas tuna, even though I'm not much of a tuna lover. But alas, he really wanted it so I said "what the hell, we're already at a sandwich place I've started to hate, why not?" I was surprised for the second time when it was actually pretty good! Not terribly fishy, and the jalapenos they put on there seemed to counteract the blandness. Plus there was lots of thunder sauce and black pepper...yum! Worst customer service EVER. Don't get me wrong the subs are DELICIOUS but this past weekend I had a horrible experience with this location. I work for a plumbing company nearby and usually order through DoorDash rather than go and pick it up to save time due to the brevity of my lunch break. Friday night my husband placed my order for a large Club with NO avo/guacamole, black olives, pickles & onions. Imagine the disappointment when my food finally arrives $20 & 45 minutes later only to bite into a sandwich covered in guacamole ! I could have cried. It was disappointing because 1- I was REALLY hungry but also because I LOVE these sandwiches ! Ever since my first time visiting Thundercloud I haven't even stepped foot inside a Subway; so needless to say I was really looking forward to this food. Work was way too busy for me to leave and get it corrected and I did NOT want to pay another delivery fee; so I called in and spoke to a manager about the mistake that was made with my food and asked if I could come pick up a replacement the following day (Saturday) since I had to work anyway. I was assured it would be no problem and that it'd be corrected. Fast forward to lunch on Saturday; my husband called in to confirm the location was aware I would be returning for my sandwich but made properly this time- No guacamole ! He let me know a staff member by the name of Mary was aware of my order and even repeated it back to him to ensure it would be right this time; The Club-turkey, ham, provolone,no guacamole on white bread, extra bacon, black olives, onions and pickles. I work alone on Saturday and normally we can't leave for lunch; I had to request my boss forward the office phones to our on-call phone so that I could run and grab my food. She obliged but told me to make it quick. I go and get my food and rush back to office and no kidding- THE SANDWICH WAS WRONG AGAIN. Not only was it on wheat instead of smothered in guacamole but the only meat on the sandwich was bacon! Since my husband is the one who called to confirm the order I asked him to call the location back and let them know what happened but 3-way in case they needed to speak to me as well. He spoke to Ricky who advised that he "did everything he could do" and that there was "no way" there was no meat on the sandwich but at this point getting it remade would be at his managers discretion who coincidentally "wasn't there" and that we'd have to call back Monday to speak to her. My husband and I waited on him to hang up so that we could resume our conversation however Ricky neglected to hang up the phone. For 7 full minutes we listened to him bragging and boasting about the way he'd just treated a customer. My husband called back to inform him of this at which point Ricky accused us of 'roaching' for free sandwiches and repeatedly saying it was " impossible" for there to be no meat on the sandwich. After spending now 2 days trying to get this sub, getting accused of not only 'roaching' for a free sandwich but also of being a liar I ended up spending ANOTHER $20 for DoorDash to bring me Schlotzsky's. Thundercloud is plain and simple and that is what is lovely about these guys. This particular location was great. The workers were super friendly and worked as fast as they could without dropping everything everywhere! They were a bit quirky and yet somehow quite professional so that was fun, too. The location is not the easiest to find but they have outdoor and indoor seating so that is pretty nice. I have had some very funny and interesting experiences at this particular location. The staff has always been very friendly to me. I always know what I want and how to order it. Roast beef and avacado all the way, you have never done me wrong. Your companion however, the green chili and corn bisque has. Let me explain. On one of my many visits to Thundercloud I complimented the employee on the soup. "It's so good! Where do y'all make the soup?" I asked. "Well, I hate the burst your bubble, but its frozen." He was right, my bubble popped right then and there. On another occasion I overheard someone ordering the veggie sandwich with no hummus. She must have mispronounced it because the employee says, "Ma'am, humus is a dirt. Do you mean hummus?" I almost lost it..............so did she. I will say also say I don't understand why they don't become like just a drive thru only because almost every night when I go it is drive thru only. Lack of staff? Oh well, on a side note the staff they do have can be quite the acrobats. On more than one occasion when the wind catches my dollar bill that I am tipping and blows it below the jar, the employee has either bent down to almost the reverse 180 degrees or jumps out to retrieve the dollar bill. Ok, so I go to this Thundercloud most often... The good: Best decor! Where the Wild Things Are mural cannot be beat. On good days you get good service from chill folks. All Thunderclouds have tasty sandwiches and I kind of dig their chef salad. When you get one on special, its even better. Today was Chicken Mesquite. I'm all about that. The average: The location is a bit tough to get in and out of sometimes. It requires a lot of relying on the kindness of others to let you through. The Bad: A lot of the time if you go at non-peak hours, they will be prepping in back and it can take some time to get service. Today they were out of the two fountain flavors I crave. Wild Cherry Pepsi and Dr. Pepper. Both. Ugh. The quarters are a bit tight, so during rush, you may find yourself out the front door. I think we'd been on the ground in Austin about a week or so when we ventured into this location, hungry and curious. There was no staff to be seen, but voices could be heard from the rear of the store. Finally the staff entered into view after we'd had ample opportunity to read the menu board thoroughly about five times. We said hello to the staff, expecting the standard call & response of pleasantries before placing our order - but we were met with silence and averted eyes. Hello we said again - again nothing. We turned on our heels and made off with our money and our patronage to somewhere else where the people working there can be bothered to actually greet a paying customer in some way shape or form. There once was a sub shop named Thundercloud Sometimes they play trippy music really loud They make me a turkey Without being a jerk-y But sometimes their heads are in a cloud That pretty much sums it up. They always seem a little (ok, sometimes a LOT) stoned here but totally friendly. Every sandwich I've gotten there is made with total attention and care. Might take 10 minutes, but hey, it's an experience. Their subs are not spectacular, I usually take it home to throw some extras on it they don't offer (or charge for), but it's a good solid sandwich at a low price. They also list their nutritional information on their site, which is nice. Plus, it's less than a mile from my house, so it's great weekend lunch food. Lots of different sandwiches, large selection of chips, and I haven't tried their soups, but I mean to, really I do! And I think some people are mixing up the locations, there is a drive thru location a bit south on Burnet, but this one is in a strip mall-ish area near Conan's Pizza. read more

I work right by this location and frequent it whenever I get a sub craving. They make some pretty awesoem subs at a good price with all the fixin's (soup, drink, chips). Certainly not an every day thing, but very good still. I usually go for the special of the day, becuase I eat anything except for crab and they never serve a crab sub. What really impresses me abotu this location is the following: No matter how crowded the place is, They alwyas have some cool character ready to make me my sub in a few minutes. How have I not written a review on this place. I have been here at least 40 times since moving to the neighborhood. This is not a place to go get a fast sandwich. This is a place to hgo have a sandwich carefully and slowly made. t will be good, nothing amazing, but consistently good. The decor is fun, where the wild things are painted on one wall and a yellow submarine on the other. Good and strange music always pumping over the speakers. At lunch this place can get very very crowded, so I suggest going during non peak times. But the bad side about going during non peak times is that the service seems even slower. read more

This is a dependable standard to my cheap and somewhat healthy diet. The subs are good, if you know how to order them right (be very picky about what's put on, i.e. only a little sprouts) and they are fast enough. I like the mural on the wall (where the wild things are), very cute, great for kids (not that i have any). The staff has been surly at times, but generally, the guys in there have been nice and accommodating. Nothing to write home about, but just something that's decent and cheap. BTW...the brownies and carrot cake rock the house. It's so hard to resist getting them every time I go in there.
