Host put us in a two-table private dining room when there was plenty of open other tables available. It was an intimate dining experience...with complete strangers from the table next to us. Not to mention this room was in a high traffic area so we had servers and other restaurant guests walking by making both my wife and I very uncomfortable. My wife got the drunken tips and she liked her meal. I got the fish fry and it was horrible. Three tiny pieces of awkwardly flavored fish. The fish had no taste and the breading had too much taste if you will. I could only taste breading and not fish. Living in Wisconsin my whole life I expect certain things from a Friday Fish Fry and Thunder Bay Grille did not meet my expectations at all. I ordered a "tall" tap beer. It was served in a large water glass, not any particular beer type glass. I can overlook bad food and service. I can't overlook the fact that my credit card information was stolen after I used it at Thunder Bay Grille. Thankfully my credit card holder did not hold me accountable for the transactions. I know where I use my credit card and where I don't. I am confident my information was stolen because of my use of the credit card at Thunder Bay Grille. If you want to try the restaurant, you may get decent food. My wife enjoyed her meal, I did not. I would use cash to pay the bill. read more

So disappointed. We used to go here all the time after work, and it was great so I talked my husband on going at 6 on a Saturday. It was not terribly crowded, we were seated right away and our server was there shortly. We said we were going to do a tapas (like 4-5 appetizers to share) and he recommended the seafood fondue(the most expensive). We did order that and 2 drinks right away- from there it was over 15-20 minutes before we received our drinks (again, it was not busy) and appetizers came moments before the drinks. His pomegranate Mule was good, but the sangria was harsh and a bit rough -- very harsh -- alcohol overbearing. Two of the chips with the 4 that came with the crab/avocado tower were stale, and the fondue was nothing to write home about-- in all this time the server never returned to check on us or ask if we wanted anything else or our main meal- at the point he finally checked on us and asked if we wanted anything we said no, he said to call if we wanted more bread...but we never saw him again, even when we sat at the end of our chairs asking for the check. The food was so-so, but the lack of engagement or attention from the server was the bigger issue. I have never tipped under 15% before...typically i am 20-40% even on our worst--but mediocre food, VERY delayed drinks and missing server put me to a new low. read more

This has a nice, rustic ambiance. The food is hit or miss, depending on what the special is. I like seafood and it's hard to find a decent fried shrimp dinner, but sometimes it's offered here. Got take out - a burger and an Ahi Tuna salad - and found it was surprising better than I'd anticipated. The burger was the correct temp (even after being boxed), and my lover, who ate the salad, said she would have it again, and thought it was very tasty. Went here for brunch and $50 a plate the food quality wasn't the best. Myself and my father had stomach cramps and were upset to our stomachs afterwards. Called to let them know so they could be aware. Manager was very rude and stated that there was no way the food made us sick and that no one has complained about the food and that the chef does an amazing job. Working in the food industry I got very upset. I snapped at her and told her I was going to come back and have a in person conversation with her on how to handle upset customers. I had no intention on a refund. I just wanted to make sure that food quality was there. Upsetting that a higher quality restaurant doesn't coach on customer service. There was no reassurance or an apology for our experience instead of the feeling of being accused of lying. Thunder Bay was able to get us reservations at 4:30 PM for Easter "brunch". We hadn't been there before and were disappointed in the experience. The wait staff was friendly and helpful so that was a plus. The problem with Thunder Bay is it's just huge. Crowed, noisy, messy, food dried out from sitting too long, ran out of prime rib, and the champagne fountain dried up. This may be a great buffet for the early customers but it's certainly not worth it for a late afternoon reservation. read more

SO RUDE! We went there for Easter brunch today. Their brunch is not cheap and with the number of people we had plus alcohol, we spent a good amount of money. Then the manager told us we had to leave 1hr 45mins in to our brunch because they have a 1.5hr time limit for reservations. This was never mentioned at time of reservation. Save your money. My husband and I looked online and thought the price range and menu items looked good, so we went. When we arrived, it was freezing in the dining room. I commented to the server who seated us and she replied, "I'm so hot!". She also commented that the menus were COMPLETELY different. When our server, Nate, asked how we were doing tonight, I replied "Freezing!" and he answered, "Yeah, it is pretty cold in here." He did not offer to see if he could do something about it (like maybe turn down the A/C-it is not hot outside). The menu reflected a significant increase in prices and several of the items that had attracted us were no longer part of the menu. I chose the sea scallops and my husband had the Alfredo pasta and added shrimp. The server asked me what side I wanted. I looked at him expectantly. He stared back until I suggested that maybe he could tell me what my choices were. (the menu did not indicate that there was a side included) He told me I could choose some kind of potato (I had to prompt him for what kinds were offered), or I could have roasted vegetables or asparagus. Those last two choices were on the description for the meal so I was confused until he told me that sometimes people want more because there are only 4 (referring to asparagus, I assumed). I chose sweet potato only to have him return later to tell me that they didn't have any more sweet potatoes. While we were waiting for our food, my husband heard the table behind us talking about how their order had been messed up. The server brought sweet biscuits and sweet flavored butter, the biscuits were mediocre at best and dry as a bone without the butter. In my opinion, a sweet biscuit was an odd offering before the meal, but that is just a personal choice. Our meal came and the first thing I noticed was that my $21 meal included only 4 scallops, 4 stalks of asparagus and a 1/3 cup (approx) of "roasted" vegetables (which were flavorless and seemed to be mostly water). My husband paid an additional $4.99 for 6 med shrimp and the Alfredo sauce was watery and bland. Both of us had to salt and pepper our meals in hopes of flavoring our meals. The quality of our meals was "ok" but closer to what we'd expect if we'd ordered the same items at Denny's. None of the staff looked to be happy. And, the server did not return to check on us until we were almost finished (we ate it because we were starving)....and he never asked us how our meal was, just asked if he could get us anything else. The dining room has vaulted ceilings causing the conversations around us to be very loud. This meal/dining experience was definitely not worth $45 read more

Ok so I got the BBQ Red Snapper. Here's what went down. I had excellent service at the bar but the fish was way over cooked. I did voice this to the bartender. The veggies were half cooked and half raw. I like them raw if possible but most people do not. I was disappointed about the $18 red snapper. There was a discount of 50% added to the check because Anna fought for it. I did finish the meal so I was not asking for a free dinner. I will still return because I am staying in the hotel next door and I don't have transportation elsewhere. read more

If you have a gluten sensitivity, they have a GF menu, however I just got really sick. One of their steaks on the GF menu is marinated in beer. Um. Ok. Went here for my father-in-law's 87th birthday. He made reservations for quite a large party. They stuck us in a long, narrow room at the front of the building where there was maybe 15 inches between the back of the chair and the wall. He asked if we could be moved to a more spacious area, but management refused. There were no ceiling fans, and only one entrance into this space. It was extremely hot, and the poor waitress had to squeeze her way to the front of the room at least 50 times throughout the ordeal. The food is average, definitely not worth the price. I would NEVER eat here by my own choosing, and I think my father-in-law has ended his traditional birthday celebration there, as well. read more

First off the only reason I'm not giving this 5 stars is because my soup came out cold. The four stars is mainly for the service and partly for their food. The service was outstanding. My family asked for some pretty crazy stuff and they made it happen. I'm sure if you asked the waitress to take off her pants I'm sure she'd do it. She was so good that she went out of her way to microwave my soup three times and to add to that we went their 5 minutes before it closed. If someone came into my restaurant to take time away from seeing my family I would probably pee in their food. The food was also great. The quality and service was mediocre. The shrimp jambalaya was good but the drunken sirloin tips were difficult to chew and dry. The salads were not very fresh and the four cheese mushroom caps were barely warm. The mushrooms were still a bit hard. The rolls were also dry although the cinnamon butter was good. We go here every 6 months or so really hoping to like it but every time, we are disappointed. We went there Friday night for dinner with the family and my husband and I got drinks at the bar. He got a beer and I got a $10 glass of wine. I picked up the glass a couple times and it would stick to the cocktail napkin, I finally looked and there was disgusting sticky food on the base of it. I told the bartender so that he would bring me a new glass of wine and he was rude, unapologetic and seemed irritated to have to get me a glass of wine in a clean glass. The rest of the meal was fine, except for the waitress forgetting to bring my husband his soup and not asking the kids if they needed refills in their small kid glasses. But the disgusting dirty wine glass and rude unapologetic bartender may be the final straw on us trying this restaurant periodically. read more

We had lunch there yesterday. The biscuits they delivered to table were a nice free addition but they were so dry n crumbly u couldn't eat them. The service was good. The appetizer spicy shrimp I sent back. It wasn't very tasty , seemed like it wasn't cooked enuf, the shrimp was not white but opaque. I reordered the coconut shrimp. It was good, not outstanding. My son had a steak. He rated it a 7 out of 10. The sauce was very good on it. I like the atmosphere here. We will continue to go back but I think they could be better. We have visited Thunder Bay a lot of times over the 13 years they were in business. We especially like the Sunday Brunch. The food is great and the service even better. I held my daughter's bridal shower in a private room at Thunder Bay this past weekend and I have only great things to say. Before the event, the communication was efficient and I felt as though they went above and beyond the call to ensure the day would be flawless. The food buffet we selected was delicious, the waitresses were attentive and on top of everything and everyone with orders. The manager went over and above accommodating us with games on the patio, going so far as to have a family member deliver the lawn games, and everything was efficient and orderly. The restaurant is connected by a covered outdoor walkway from the Holiday Inn hotel so was convenient. I was staying at the Holiday Inn for a couple of weeks during winter in January so I dined at the restaurant some nights because I didn't want to have to get in the car and look for something else in the weather. I've had the chicken jambalaya, the Chicken Alfredo, and the Three Tomato Pasta at different visits. I couldn't really eat any of it because it was sooooo rich and salty. By the third visit I decided to get the tomato pasta because it was a vinaigrette sauce hoping it would be lighter since it wasn't a cream base but it was overpowering in the vinegar. I couldn't take more than two bites before pushing it away. Their cloth napkins STINK! I don't know what they wash it in but it is not pleasant to wipe your mouth with. I didn't even use it. Yes all three times I dined there the napkins were just as nasty. I know that everyone has a different pallet but the chef or owner there must not have any taste buds or sense of smell. How can a restaurant provide napkins that stink so terribly to their guests and food that is so overpowering? Perhaps I have a sensitive nose but I've never encountered anything like that in a restaurant before. I also had appetizers during my visits. I had the shrimp cocktail and that was again extremely salty. They told me that the shrimp was fresh, but it was frozen. I also had the french onion soup and that was disgusting. The cheese floating on top looked like it was floating there for days. I went to lift it up and it came out like a flat hockey puck. It was luke warm so the cheese did not melt in the soup. Tasted like something from a vending machine. I only had one sip of it. I think I gave this restaurant enough chances. I will not return. Tonight when the waitress asked me how the food was, I told her it was very vinegary and hard to eat. When I asked for the bill she even acknowledged that I didn't even touch my food and asked if I wanted anything else instead. I said no and she went to get the bill. I was surprised to see that they still billed me for the entire meal. No biggie but I would think that if a guest wasn't happy with the food at least deduct 10% off or something. But whatever. Don't waste your time eating here. We waited more than 30 min for a table when the whole back of the restaurant was empty. Everyone around us got their food faster than us and left before our food was even on the table! Our fish tasted like they charred it and then threw it in the microwave because they forgot about it. It was so dry that we couldn't eat it. The waitress was very nice about it and took it off the check. I defiantly recommend not to come here. It was a waste of our time for very gross food. Terrible service! Our server certainly did not deserve the $40 tip added onto our bill. Server was disrespectful, came to our table twice throughout the night. The food was not worth the money. You can get same quality food for less at other places. NY Strip steak ordered med done and was served well done. Oh, the manager came out and said it was cooked perfectly, but did you try the dry steak, sir? The Sirloin steak ordered med rare and was served well done. Appetizer wings tasted weird. my family has been dining here for almost the entirety of our 20 years in WI, as it is one of the few nicer restaurants in Waukesha County that always has seating for larger groups. the quality has really declined in recent years, w/pretty unforgivable repeat offenses like forgetting (or not caring) to season entrees and cooking them inapppropriately (well dones for rares, etc), while prices continue to climb. the weekend AYCE brunch is still a great deal though, and the only thing i'll come for anymore read more

Bartender service could not have been worse - we were ignored, until we got up, and bartender strolled over to pick up our tip. I wanted to ask where the hell he was the rest of time. Look around.
