I really like the thinking cup... it is big enough that there is always a place to sit, and there is a nice ambiance. The servers behind the counter are nice and considerate. Really cool tables with old newspaper print on them. It is expensive. A small macaroon cost three bucks or something. But if you don't go everyday, it is not a big deal to pay a little extra. Plus, you can always grab a pastry elsewhere. But it was a damn good macaroon. Personally, very glad they don't have wifi. I don't like to be around people who are constantly plugged into the internet, not cool. It's one thing to be on your laptop at home, but everywhere? It's not a computer lab. Early in their opening, they played the music a bit too loud for my taste, but the last couple times I've been there, it has been really cool and mellow, they played Zero 7, which brought me back to my college days. Before heading over to line up for dinner at Giacomo's I needed some place nearby to charge my phone for a bit after a day spent walking around town. I saw on Yelp that there was a Thinking Cup on the North End and figured that was a good option. I've been to the busy Boston Common location on a previous trip and remembered that it wasn't too hard to find a seat. I think this one was even more spacious. I sat down at a table before moving over to the counter by the wall where I could plug in my phone. I don't think this is a great spot for reading unless you can block out all the noise. But it's definitely good for a breather, to people-watch, grab a bite to eat and/or enjoy some good coffee. I really liked my CORTADO. read more

Meh... The Stumptown coffee wasn't anything special. I don't know though; I think my body is starting to reject coffee. I can never seem to finish a whole cup lately. Anyway, I like the ambiance and decor, as well as the brick wall and the dim lighting. A cafe that is named Thinking Cup ought to offer free wifi, however. At the very least a couple of free hours! I can think and write brilliant papers without the web, but definitely do not get as far as I potentially could without the help of my ridiculous random google searches. We came to study a bit and it's not too loud of an environment to study in, but we didn't have any outlets where we were seated so it made it inconvenient. Super cute cafe with a good selection of espresso drinks and eats. They have a variety of pastries (croissants, muffins, fruit tarts, eclair, etc.) and breakfast and lunch options. They brew Stumptown coffee roasters! Plenty of two seater tables and a bar counter top for seating. Not sure if they have plugs to charge laptops but the atmosphere is really nice. Absolutely phenomenal coffee shop. The barista Cabel knows what the funk he's doing. Found he won 1st place at the NYC coffee fest this year. Grabbed an affortona - the espresso was bangin. Also got a nice little Syphon pour of the yirgacheffe from Cabel -- had a great clean feel with unbelievable citrus flavors. The food was great too. Got a grilled cheese sandwich custom made with everything that was on my mind like white cheddar, aged manhego, pickled jalepenos, coffee BBQ, and some applewood bacon. Excellent spot to grab a pick-me-up. The coffee is flavorful and the homemade syrups are impressive and unique. I went with the hazelnut, but there are other more unique options if you're up for trying something different. The overall atmosphere is very chill (as a coffee shop should be), with modern touches amongst old school decor. Lots of seating, both tables and bar-style. Though we didn't have any food this time around, I was really intrigued by their unique sandwich offerings and their pastry display was impressive. What a great find in Boston! My favorite coffee in the public market was out of what I usually get, so we ventured to the nearest shop outside. They carry stumptown coffee from Portland, Oregon, which is arguably the best coffee in the US. They had a nice variety of pastries, sandwiches and cannolis to order. Skip the donut shop coffees which are on every corner and keep walking on by the other chain because the Thinking Cup brews a good bold cup of coffee that is not burned or bitter. I love almost everything about Thinking Cup except it's a bit dimly lit and has no wifi. Maybe it's not meant to be a coffee shop for working? I have tried the coffee, sandwiches, quiche, juice, and desserts here. If you are into it, the house coffee is supposingly Stumptown coffee from Portland, OR. Not too bad. In terms of food, my favorite would be the Greek sandwich and the quiche. Cute cute cute cafe located in the heart of the North End. This area on Hanover is known as Little Italy and the street is lined with eclectic Italian restaurants. This cafe was such a gem. Many students were actually studying and visiting with their friends. It does not carry a Starbucks feel, its more of a small cafe feeling with character. The employees have great customer service and want to make sure you leave happy. My wife and I came here to charge up oursevles and charge up our phones. What we found was a very nice place with lots of good pastry treats and my wife enjoyed a latte. We each had a pastry and enjoyed both of them, plus the place was very clean and nicely run, I liked the atmosphere and the bathroom here. Not gonna lie I was disappointed I didn't my latte art in my foam with my chai tea. Chai tea was good not amazing. I ordered a small chai $3.50 Got the chocolate cake and it was very boring, not moist with very lil flavor. I would come to the assumption that it's frozen cake that they thaw to serve and is most certainly not made in house and if it is....well maybe I got an old piece... Ice coffee is a must and this place has it. For a medium it was $2.75. The price is good. But what I like about their ice coffee here is its cold brewed! Cold brew coffee is less acidic and better for your health! It's advertised right on their menu, "Cold Brew." Lot's of places to sit. A little bit dark inside, but I believe its part of the ambiance. I've been here a handful of times now and it's 90% of what I'm looking for. The barristas are pleasant and professional. There's typically seating available. There's reasonable food, and tasty pastries, and they have pretty good tea. But the coffee is what matters for a cafe... The latte foam/texture is excellent. I'm always haranguing cafes about their foam/texture because the majority of them do a poor job and it's a big turn-off. Well Thinking Cup has no issue there and it's pure pleasure to slurp down some latte and let the microfoam infuse my mouth. What's supposed to happen is that the texture-pleasure fades into flavor-pleasure, unfortunately the actual coffee flavor is rather lacking. I've been considering some other drink (e.g., pour-over or french press or plain espresso) to get a good feeling for the flavor profile they're trying to hit without interference by the latte foam, but since it's so hard to find good microfoam (even in Boston) I haven't managed to convince myself to get anything but a latte yet. read more

A great find in Boston after wandering around North End. The decor is great. Very retro and with lots of room to sit down. Check out the old newspapers that decorate their tables. Unfortunately, they have no Wifi. They are the only place in Boston that uses Stumptown beans. They even have cold brew on draft and pour over and siphon coffee. However, I think it might be a while before they can get better at these advanced techniques. I was excited to get a siphon made with Ethiopia Mordecofe, one of my favorite Stumptown beans. Unfortunately, the barista was a little bit unexperienced and the resulting coffee showed. Definitely underextracted and missing the wonderful fruity, citrus, fully body of a good Mordecofe made with full immersion techniques. For coffee snobs, maybe hold on the thinking cup but a great place for a casual expresso or baked goods. read more

I am from Seattle, so we're known to be coffee snobs. I liked the atmosphere of this place. It can get pretty crowded, so don't count on immediately finding a place to sit when you come in. However, the pastry selection was amazing. I came in to two different Thinking Cup locations while on vacation in Boston, and I had quick and friendly service. The pastry selection is pretty great, and I tried the pistachio macarons and loved them. The hot cider was perfect after trekking around in the cold, and I even got to customize my own grilled cheese sandwich. I felt drunk with power! I made my sandwich with smoked gruyere, caramelized onions, and bacon with sourdough bread. I created a masterpiece, dare I say. If I lived in Boston, I would come here often. Come for the cider, and stay for the grilled cheese and pistachio macarons! read more

I have been to both the Thinking Cup on Tremont and on Hanover, and the Hanover location has won me over! The North End location has a different vibe - less college students, a better layout, and much quieter. From the street, the Thinking Cup on Hanover looks tiny, but walk in and you enter a coffee lover's oasis: a counter long enough to accommodate lines without disrupting seated guests; dozens of tables, booths, and barstools for those who want to relax with their coffee; and rich, warm, luxurious decor that invites you to take a seat and stay awhile. The cafe has a very old world European feel with its espresso-colored decor, silent films in the background, and tables covered with old newspaper clippings. The Stumptown coffee is robust and smooth, and the lattes are divine. I've especially enjoyed the hazelnut latte, honey cinnamon latte, and the regular latte. The drinks, while expensive, are always delicious - handcrafted and brewed to perfection. Many complain that there's no Wi-Fi. I have been to this Thinking Cup 100 plus times. Overall is a really great coffee shop that offers a great food menu and offers Counter Culture coffee. Atmosphere: A great sized cafe with lots of seating. If you have a large party, you will be able to all sit together and drink great coffee and have some awesome deserts! If you are trying to work on your laptop, the outlets are limited but there are some. The biggest down side if you are working here is there is no wifi. Product: The consistency for their beverages is about average. Sometimes the Chai is not as strong as it usually is or the espresso is lacking in their latte's, which is why I am taking off one star. This happens probably every five visits. Their desert selection is amazing. Try their chia seed pudding for a superfood desert! Their sandwiches are also amazing.
