An updated review is needed for this place, to which I have dutifully returned and now love. Was it a fault of my own, or a fault of the menu at the time? Regardless, a 5 star is necessary and earned. Why? Caviar tater tots is (partially) why. These tots are dressed lovingly with diced and sauteed red onion (an amazing addition), caviar, and an unassuming blob of creme fraiche. It is served in a bowl with adorable wooden skewer forks. This, with a glass of ice cold wine, is divine. Normally my ultimate guilty pleasure is a chilled glass of white and a "french fry salad" (also known as a plate of fries). However these caviar tots are classier, tastier, and a welcome addition to my life that I never knew I needed. Brunch & happy hour are my two favorite times to hit this spot up, and they have earned this star upgrade. The service is also great, location can't be beat, and the decor remains charming. Ate her tonight for the first time and I have to say my boyfriend and I were blown away. We really don't go out very often anymore due to Covid, but was in the area and really wanted to give this place a try ... it did not disappoint! Our server Erin was absolutely amazing ... so friendly and attentive (without being overbearing) and very knowledgeable about the menu and wine to pair with our entrees. The bartender Dan was also wonderful ...he was chatting it up with some folks at the bar - it was so refreshing hearing laughter and being "normal" in these strange times. He noticed my boyfriend's drink was almost empty and came right over to ask if he wanted another or a recommendation. Everything we had was absolutely delicious: Drinks: Maria Maria / Wood & Whitlock Apps: The tempura green beans (not greasy at all and perfect coating of tempura / Burrata salad (nice to have it paired with something other than tomatoes!) Pretty disappointed in the overall experience. We came here last night to celebrate my wife closing a big deal at work. I called ahead of time and asked if celebratory drinks could be placed on the table as we arrived as a surprise for my wife. We got there, got seated and then had to wait 20 minutes before our waiter came over. Once he came, he asked us if we would like anything to drink. I told him I had called ahead and asked for two drinks to be on the table when we got there but that it was all good. He then went to check the list of reservations, came back to the table and apologized for the mistake. The drinks were then brought to the table but it was not the drink I had asked for for my wife. The waiter again apologized and my wife ordered a new drink. The food was fine but the entire experience kind of rubbed us the wrong way. At the end of the meal, the waiter still charged us for all of the drinks despite the mistake. He offered us a free cappuccino which I don't think comes close to what should have been offered. Have been dying to try this as I am a huge fan of the Cookery. I went tonight and was extremely pleased. The warm welcoming space was filled with guests at tables and the bar was hopping. Our server was an extremely nice young blond man who could not have been more enthusiastic about the menu, recommending several entrees, apps and desserts. We are THRILLED this opened in Katonah and wil be back many times. Our food was awesome! We had the tots and the tuna tartare....the addition of watermelon was divine. And both had the gnocchi with pea pesto (I know, but couldn't resist having the same entree). Desserts...amaaaaazing. Shut up with Confetti cake bread pudding! Just might go back this weekend. The Whitlock's staff is friendly and attentive enough. The proce is in line with its competitors so have no complaints about that Wish I could say the same about the food which was a huge disappointment. Tuna tartar was tasteless so it went back to the chef who tried to spice up tasteless tuna. The mussels were mediocre and the French fries tasted like bland, unbranded frozen fries. Perhaps we ordered the wrong things at The Whitlock? Based on our experience it doesn't live up to other restaurants in Katonah! read more

Wow, this restaurant is great! I got the scallops as an appetizer and the cauliflower steak entree - both were delicious! The menu has so many good options it was actually hard to chose. The wine was also great and my mom got the mojo to which she said was very refreshing. I can't wait to go back and try more! read more

The service and ambiance was lovely. The tots with caviar were great but needed more creme fraiche. The biscuits were not hot or flaky, and the jam was just okay. The latkes Benedict was fantastic, but the lobster roll with bacon should have omitted the bacon. There was a ton of lobster which was great. The cheesy grits did not taste like grits at all and the char on top was offputting. The Dutch baby was way too dense and very little flavour of lemon ricotta. I drove quite a bit to get there and will not make a return trip, but if I'm in the area for something else, I'll just have the tots. read more

We tried it last night. The good: The drinks are good. The waiter we had (don't remember his name) was very very good, knowledgeable and supervised pretty good service. The place has lots of locals on a Friday night. The Bad: The menu and food itself is standard fare, and nearly every dish was very salty. The person who took our reservation for a party of six was at best "snippy" and not very "hospitalible" almost like they were doing us a favor to take the reservation and they have some kind of penalty of charging $25/head for parties that cancel or are "no shows"; not a great policy at all but when they tell you on the phone it could be in a more friendly way, not like scolding a child. Last, and this is nit-picky but we hate it when bus staff starts clearing the table before everyone has finished "are you done", "are you done"? It's just annoying, bad training and bad form, I don't care if it's a teenager in his first job, train them better. Probably not going back. read more

Ok, so....My son and I are French Onion Soup enthusiasts. We try it wherever we go. Westchester Magazine recently awarded the Whitlock's FOS as the best in Westchester County. Naturally, we had to try it. Was it worh the 30 minute drive? The Whitlock's French Onion Soup is somewhat unique in that it has a bone sticking up from the middle of the bowl and the broth is supposedly suffused with marrow, adding to the flavor. Aesthetically, it's very impressive. The gruyere covered crouton topping was definitely tasty. However, the deciding factor for us is always the broth. That was the soup's downfall. It was too salty and lacked the full bodied onion tinged beefy flavor we have experienced in France and other restaurants in New York. Perhaps the best was found in Greenwich, CT at Le Figaro--may it rest in peace. Anyone who experienced the soup there found it unforgettable. We have often found the restaurants recommended by Westchester Magazine to be sub par. Our family jokes about it. I would not label the soup at The Whitlock sub par. It's OK. However, it is not the "best in Westchester County." I'm sure that we haven't tried the FOS in every restaurant where it is offered in the county, but, hands down the best we've enjoyed is at Ruby's Oyster Bar in Rye, NY. BTW, it's a smaller portion, but only $10. I think the Whitlock's $16 is excessive. As an aside, a real bargain for very good FOS for those of us who consider ourselves part of the proletariat can be found at Panera Bread. No "baked on" cheese, but, the broth is surprisingly good. Our main course was the (Market) salad, one with salmon, one without. They were fine. In conclusion, we won't be running back to the Whitlock for the French Onion Soup and encourage those who relied on Westchester Magazine and have had the soup at the Whitlock to compare it to the soup at Ruby's. read more

I went for lunch with my husband and mother. My husband ordered the French onion soup and it was quite possibly the best onion soup I've ever tasted!! The serving was enough for a meal in and of itself!! The three of us shared it. My mother had the chorizo and shrimp burger - beware it's spicy - but oh so yummy! I had the prosciutto and burrata sandwich - also a very good choice. But hubby's lobster BLT stole the show. Simply Devine. Really glad we came here for lunch. We'll be back for sure. read more

Met friends for dinner last night. They don't take reservations so there was a 35minute wait (which wasn't terrible) since we had drinks at the bar. Maria-Maria martini is excellent... so good I had two! Restaurant is a bit on the smaller side but nicely decorated and very cozy. The staff is very friendly too! Once seated, we ordered a few appetizers which we shared: octopus (excellent), buratta (good), artichoke dip (good) and tuna tartare (too salty). My husband and I both had the branzino special for dinner (portions were nicely sized) and flavor was great but too salty. I'm not sure if the line chef went a little too crazy with the salt shaker but definitely would recommend easing up on that a bit. Split the brownie for dessert which was good but not blown away. Friend had the apple crumb which she enjoyed. Overall, good but not great. read more

I was really looking forward to dining at this restaurant, but I was really disappointed by the food. We ordered the French onion soup with marrow bone, the burger and the chorizo and shrimp burger. Presentation of all of the dishes was great and looked very instagrammable, however it all looked better than it tasted. The soup had tons of gruyere, but not much marrow in the bone. Also, the broth was somewhat bland, really missing that beefy, depth of flavor that you'd normally get in a good French onion soup. The burger was serviceable and charred well, but again, lacking in flavor. The fries tasted like McDonalds fries, and are certainly not worth the $8 they charge for a side. Luckily the fries came with our meals so we did not have to pay that insane price for so so fries. I actually wished I had ordered the salad on the side rather than the fries - and I normally love fries! Not sure if it was an off day but definitely felt that while the menu items all sounded great, the execution was way off. Don't think we will be returning. I will note that Service was good and our waitress was very friendly and accommodating. read more

Omg I made an account just so I can write this review. I've been eating here maybe 2 years so far and by far the past few months the food has just gotten so much better. The specials have gotten very pretty and creative and even the waiters are so much happier than I remember. Especially the hostess, I remember having to wait at the door all the time . It's so good to be able to be seated instantly Even when it's packed (which is almost always so make a reservation!!) They must've all gotten a Halloween raise cuz they really improved after October. From food to atmosphere everything is improving, even the smell lol. 1000/10 Great place!! I got The french onion soup and Tots! 2 items if I saw identical somewhere else wouldn't even consider ordering. Then I got the Elk Chop as a special and it was divine. So The Whitlock took over and renovated the spot where the old Willie Nicks was. The entire menu was revamped and Chef Matt Safarowic and his wife Christina have done an amazing job. One of the things that make a restaurant great, is the quality of the ingredients. Of course, the chef needs to be able to cook, and Matt more than delivers. For lunch, there is a pork, broccoli rape and provolone sandwich that would make you cry it is so good. Seasoned to perfection, it is a favorite go to for my wife and I. The Pork Chop is amazing; the flavors from the Berkshire pork is extraordinary. Pasta is another winner, and Chef Matt knows how to do it right; he is an alum of The Cookery in Dobbs Ferry, which serves extraordinary pasta. Katonah benefits from that. Finally, do yourself a favor and try the brunch. The biscuits are old school, crispy and flaky. One of the great brunch entrees is poached egg and bacon on potato latkes. They are addictive. Finally the bar is amazing, ask for Mark or Kandace to mix you a Expresso Martini, or their signature Whitlock drink (hint, it's smoked). Great experience and fun has kept my family and I as regulars. read more

A random first time trip to Katonah to watch the live action Oscar short ended in a late night bite while waiting for the train home. The service was impeccable, the barman was absolutely the nicest and very knowledgeable of the menu and dietary restrictions. We ordered the tater tots which were so damn good - freaky like only home made will, and topped with caviar!!! We also got, by recommendation, the shrimp and chorizo burger which, after literally wolfing it, I don't understand why isn't a thing everywhere??!!! great experience which made me want to go back to this town/village I've never heard of before yesterday just so I can try the rest of the menu! read more
