Yet another suggestion by a co-worker. This one was a no brainer since I went up to Sundance multiple times while in Provo on business. In fact I was really looking forward to it since it was going to be the one good meal of the week. The Tree Room is the smaller more formal restaurant in the Sundance Resort. It has a tree growing through the middle of it (hence the name). The Tree Room room only has a few tables and on the night we went (a Thursday in January) there was only one other table in use. Even though I did know my dinner mates that well it turned out to be a fun night. The wait staff was really fun and once the other table left for the night and we were the last patrons in the restaurant they really loosened up. As would expected with a small restaurant the menu is limited to a couple of entrees. However, no one in our party complained about their meals. We all got dessert and the wait staff gave the whole table an additional dessert as well. One of these days I am going back to try it again. We have made a habit of going to Tree Room. For nearly twenty years, it has been a treat my friends and I look forward to to celebrate our birthdays. We have done dinner and then a Sundance play, been excited when we have seen celebrities there (including the obvious one), and sometimes just eaten. But what we have always been the most excited about was the food; fresh, tasty, well-prepared and fresh. That is the hallmarks of our dinners at Sundance. We were VERY surprised when we went two years ago, and the experience seemed, well, normal. The food was good but pedestrian. The excitement was gone, and our annual B-Day Dinner seemed just ordinary and passe. So much so that we skipped our annual b-day dinner at Sundance last year for Grand America. We decided to give Sundance another look this year, more out of habit than anything. I am sure glad we did- the magic is back. The food is exciting again. The service above what we expect (and we expect a LOT from TR). The live guitar is a GREAT touch! Our dinner lasted 4 hours, but it seemed like only an hour. It was one of those special nights again, where it all just flows, and is so enjoyable. The chef made me a special dish for my birthday- something I requested beforehand. It was wonderful! And all our regular menu items were fantastic. If TR seems to have lost its magic recently, give them another shot. Its back! We just wish they would bring back the Garlic Mashed! read more

Wow. After having had long time reservations so excited to visit this iconic restaurant. Started out w great service for our drinks in a sexy secluded booth. But within 10 minutes another family was seated next booth over and we never saw our server again !! Oh yeah we heard him, in fact we heard him explain the entire menu drinks to then apps to entrees to this RUDE family for 30 minutes and there's no exaggerating. Now granted as a server it's terrible to be put in this position but he should have said "one moment " to the rude family and turned to acknowledge us thereby signaling to rude family that they weren't the only diners in the restaurant. Instead, after them chatting ppl that worked there (a question asked by rude daughter who worked at Zooms) he LEFT without so much as a glance or even a nod our direction. So guess what ?? WE LEFT !! Yep we were going to asked to be moved to another section but the tail end of "who knows which employees" was the coup de gras!! Instead we explained to the hostess the entire situation and headed over to the Foundry which we had eaten at the night before. And had another GREAT meal w our same awesome server from the night before. Tree Room shame on you !!! You don't seat 2 tables beside each other within 15 minutes w the same server at 8:45 at night !! For sure I will be passing this along to the manager at Sundance. Might be best rated restaurant in Utah County but on a slow Tuesday late August night they could not get their act together. In retrospect, I'm super sad as I had looked so forward to dining here our last night before returning to Florida and had read all about this and the art collection. The ambience and our booth was perfect until this one misstep in judgement by the hostess in the seating proximity (when the restaurant was wide open). And then further compounded by the inept server that did not know how to side step rude guests that are usurping his time. Oh well, maybe next time I'm 3 years when we get to visit again will be different. And kudos to the Foundry for picking up The ball that the The Tree Room dropped. read more

The Tree room is a must dine experience when visiting Sundance. The food is 5 star, white glove service, yet the vibe is mountain casual. On some nights they have local performers providing background dining music, which is really nice. It's a great place to celebrate a special milestone, however, there is a minimum age requirement to dine in this venue ( I believe 12), which we appreciate as the other dining venues are family friendly and sometimes lively. read more

The Tree Room is fantastic!! My wife and I had dinner here on Friday evening and it was such an intimate setting, where we enjoyed a beautiful view in a cabin-style dining room. It's quiet and perfect for a picturesque and cozy. Our waiter was polite, professional, and knowledgeable about the menu. The service was exceptional. My wife had the pepper steak and I had the crab-stuffed Sole, and both were delicious. Their is no shortage of talent in the kitchen and everything on the plate was cooked beautifully and complimented well. Definitely a Forbes Four Star restaurant! 10/10 read more

My new favorite place for a classy date night. Make sure you arrive at Sundance well in enough in advance of your dinner reservation to spend some time at The Owl Bar. The staff there is awesome, and they have some great drinks. We hung out at the bar for about 30-45 minutes before our reservation, which seemed to be the perfect amount of time. For appetizers, the scallops reign supreme. Handily beating the octopus and the hamachi. Don't hesitate, don't second guess, don't develop any fear of missing out, and just order the scallops. The seasonal soup was a vegetable bisque and had that sort of consistency you wish you could make in your own kitchen, just shut up and enjoy it. At this point, if you didn't notice already, the staff is ridiculous. Your server is probably hypnotizing you into ordering whatever dish they describe in beautiful and minute detail. Ham it up with them, they are working and look for chances to have fun. Salads are good, but what do you expect? That's the easy stuff for a place like this. Do yourself a favor, load up on some appetizers and a soup and skip the salad. Also, you will notice that the menu does a fine job of pairing every single dish with a drink. You could die tomorrow, you could have a heart attack leaving the restaurant, hell you could fall on one of your trips to the bathroom and end up with machines keeping your brainless body alive... Take every opportunity to pair the drinks with the food, you won't regret it, unless you are driving, which you should not be doing if you are drinking. The Elk Loin is fall and autumn, it is everything delicious you wish you could consume in the beauty of nature. It's the ski lift to the top of Sundance in the fall. It's gamy, it's amazing. The Tree Room Pepper Steak is the steak you will wish you were having the next time you are having steak if it isn't at the Tree Room. Order it rare, or medium rare and shake your head almost off your shoulders when you bite through the peppercorn crust and into the tender, tasty flesh of some incredible beef. The Halibut is what someone orders when they want to be healthy, but they look at the folks eating the red meat like a sad dog under the dinner table. Sure, you will give them pieces, and turn down their offer to trade you a bite of theirs, but they almost sabotaged their evening by not picking Elk or Steak. By dessert, you want to hug everyone. The drinks have been coming faster than the dishes, but you soldier on. Go for the cheese plate and some port if you want to remain decadent, I recommend that you do. read more

I now wish I would have never given anywhere a 5 star review except for this place. It is the perfect set up for me... quant it only seats maybe 40 or 50 people. I have heard mixed reviews on the food. However, I would say to get the recomendations and go from there. In this case the Pepper Steak was one of the best meals I have ever had. I also had the scallops, some kind of salad and a french pastry for desert. I just recently moved to the area but am quite happy with this place. 15 years of living in California and I have only met B list want to be actors. I move to Utah and who sits next to me my first week at the Tree Room? Thats right the Sundance Kid. But unfortunately the table that we we're seated at was the one table that was in the middle of the restaurant, next to large parties and in the traffic lane where busy servers kept running by. We were on our honeymoon and my husband had made a point of speaking with the staff early in the day in person and specifically asked them to please take care of us as this was a big night for us. But we got no love. No love at all. Our table was so awkward and large. We couldn't sit next to one another, hear each other speak or even hold hands. The tables next to us were boisterous in their conversation. All the food came out lukewarm, as if it had been sitting in the window waiting. Even our after dinner coffees were barely warm. Sundance Resort isn't all that big. The ski slope is small. There are 2 restaurants, a bar, a deli, and a gift shop. And that's exactly why I love it - it's not huge, but everything is incredibly well-done. We came down with my parents for a weekend. Spent the night in a cabin, and did dinner here one night. I've been trying hard to scale down my restaurant ratings, make 5 stars mean a little more. Nevertheless, this place qualifies for me. It was a flawless dining experience. Very comfortable chairs, cozy and unique ambience, excellent service, fantastic appetizers (scallops), just enough wine, and excellent entrees. Though everyone was lusting after my dad's peppercorn steak, our entrees were also great. Definitely worth a trip. If you're looking for a weekend getaway, try to snag a cheap room, and stick around for the Sunday brunch at Foundry Grill (wow). read more

I almost feel bad giving the Tree Room only three stars based on the service we received but I have to take into account the food and price. I had my heart set on trying the famous Tree Room at Sundance as soon as I arrived in Utah. I had read the yelp reviews and looked at their website extensively. We called for a reservation and we were easily accommodated. Our dinner was set for 8:00 p.m. on a Tuesday and we showed up promptly. The hostess was fantastic, taking our coats quickly, and leading us to our table. The entire wait staff is impeccable. They run a very tight and orderly ship; I was impressed with the service which is very hard to do. The food however, was less then mind blowing. Don't get me wrong it is okay but not over $100 per person good. I feel like a dinner at that price should blow your mind. The food is presented and plated beautifully but the flavors are not there. My table of four consisted of 3 foodies and a professional chef and we all agreed; you pay for the location and the service more then the food. Last night I ate in the private dining room at the Tree Room. the service was excellent and the wine was fantastic. we started with the scallops w/ chorizo and they were amazing. they were perfectly cooked and a tad spicy from the chorizo. next we had a salad. i don't remember what it was called but it had herbed goat cheese and currants and was very light. for dinner i decided to have the pepper crusted steak. i had heard that it had been on the menu for years and years and figured i would try it. it was AMAZING. i made sure every bite had steak, potatoes, spinach and the mango chutney, what a perfect bite. the flavors were right on. for dessert i had the berries in cream which was very nice, but by that time i was too full to appreciate anything. dinner took 4 hours so don't come to the tree room in a hurry, but definitely try it! read more

AMAZING! We had the pleasure of celebrating my MIL's 70th Birthday with a small group of 8 at The Tree Room last night. The staff, service and food were impeccable. It was a surprise for her, she thought it was just the 4 of us, her my FIL, my husband and myself. As we entered the hostess politely asked if we would mind waiting in the library while our table was prepared. As MIL entered the library(where the had arranged our dinner party) she had a great surprise of the other 2 couples that would be joining us. The private room was not requested but arranged by the staff at The Tree Room. As the group was mingling and taking pictures the staff quietly poured/served wine. It was very nice to have time to chat and catch up with all the guests without being rushed to take our seats at the table. Once we sat down and settled in for a fabulous meal our waitor Tyler came in and formally greeted/introduced himself. He was spectacular, he really made the experience comfortable and relaxed for all the guests. As a vegetarian I did pass on the red meat amuse-bouche the thinly sliced extremely red meat placed in front of me had NO appeal! But my husband loved it! I had the heirloom tomato salad to start. Really good but how can you do tomato's and mozzerella wrong! My husband enjoyed the Shrimp and grits. The grits were not your typical southern grits they had rich bacon flavor. For an entree the Steelhead was amazing. It had a soy glaze but not to heavy as to overpower the generous filet. My husband had the pepper steak that has been on the menu for MANY years and he did say it was possibly the best he had ever had. Everyone was very pleased with their entree and the portions are appropriate so that you don't leave hungry, I even had a little left over to take home. The service was spot on, the staff coordinated the delivery so not one person was waiting to begin eating. No one's beverage wine or water was ever empty. They came and went without even noticing they were there. I can't even count how many people served us throughout the evening and Tyler was always there at the perfect time to check on guests to share personal moments. By the time the meal was complete we felt like we knew him for a very long time. It was a pleasure to be so comfortable in an upscale restaurant. So many times upscale restaurants can be so cold and uptight. They chef had personally called my FIL in the week prior to us coming to check in and make sure he knew how to make the party comfortable. Becuase it was for a birthday party he asked if we wanted to bring the cake or should they make one. My FIL had the chef prepare the cake. It was great. It was a beautiful chocolate icing with fresh fruit decoration and probably 4-5 1/2" layers of vanilla cake. Which they delivered with dimmed lights and candles lit after everyone was comfortably finished with theirs meals. It was the lightest not overly rich/sweet cake. I cannot say enough about how special The Tree Room made my MIL's 70th Birthday dinner. I don't think the party could have been any better. This is a hard group to please having lived in SoCal and going to some very swanky restaurants but they were all impressed. Hmmm . . . . this is a place we've meant to visit for quite a while and we finally got around to eating there last night. The atmosphere and service were absolutely wonderful, but I was underwhelmed by the food. First of all, kudo's to our excellent waiter who was able to recommend the perfect wine to compliment both my swordfish entree and my husband's Elk Loin. No mean feat! The decor and architecture were also spot-on and added a lot to the overall experience. Unfortunately, the food was uneven and that was pretty surprising considering this is supposed to be one of the premiere restaurants in Utah County. We ordered the Goat Cheese Tart as an appetizer - so far, so good. However, things went downhill from there. The Spinach and Frisee' salad was way overdressed, to the point that I wondered if they had dunked the greens in the vinagrette and then scooped them on the plate. The Elk was good, but not spectacular. My swordfish was overcooked and, again, swimming in way to much of the accompanying sauces. At that point, we decided to skip desert. Maybe I'm spoiled from eating at some of the other great places in town and in Vegas, but I was definately expecting more. At this price point, your really need to bring your 'A' game. read more

The pepper steak medium rare was perfect and the mango sauce with the potatoes were delicious. As for the dessert- the berries and custard was amazing! The lady we were renting a house from suggested The Tree Room and said she had dreams about the Pepper Steak - so naturally we had to order that. They have a relatively limited menu, but that is because everything on there is cooked to perfection. The space inside is beautiful and looked like there were even outdoor seats for the summer. I spent the weekend in Sundance with the boyfriend and my parents to celebrate my dad's birthday. Dinner at the Tree Room was one of the best parts. The parents went to dinner here Friday night, but because the boyfriend's flight got delayed, we weren't able to make it. Their dinner was so good that they agreed to go again on Saturday. With how expensive this place is, that's saying something. All of the salads we tried were good-- the crab one surprisingly wasn't our favorite, but the panzanella was great. The boyfriend had the coconut curry soup and it was one of the best things I've tasted in a long time. My mom liked the pepper steak so much she ordered it both nights. She wasn't a huge fan of the mango chutney so they made her a brown sauce for the second night, and she said it was incredible. Everyone else went with the hangar steak. It's Wagyu beef, so you really don't have to say anything else about it. It's fabulous. We also tried the strawberry soup dessert, and even though it's odd, I'd definitely recommend it. Note: we didn't try any, but the menu has been updated to have some vegetarian-friendly options. Not sure about vegan. Overall, one of the best places I've been in Utah, or anywhere, period. We when to The Tree Room. I told the waiter, we want something different. After returning from the kitchen he said "The chef would be happy to prepare for a you a five course meal. Each course will be something the chef has been experimenting with to possible put on the menu in the future." Sounded perfect. I don't recall the dished but our server took the time to explain what were about to eat. Most of it we liked. Our server actually took the comment back to the chef and subsequent dishes were altered to better fit our tastes. After the meal we met the chef and complemented him on his service and skills. While you can't always get this kind of personal attention for a Chef it was well worth the extra cost and time. read more

Once again, the customer service is what always sticks out as the real success of any good restaurant. If the service is bad and the food is great, you still won't go back. Bad service is bad service. If the service is good and the food is just so-so, you will probably give it another try. Well, with this place there is no need to fret, both service & food are excellent. Somebody has done their training and listened to what constitutes a good business model. Even the coffee is excellent - - which doesn't happen often in Utah. This place is not just a restaurant, but a destination. I haven't written any reviews for a while because I've been wanting something special for my Review Number 100. What the heck, this place will do fine. I've been in the Sundance area several times in my life and even attended a conference at Sundance 15 years ago. But I believe that I had never been to the Tree Room until last week when I drove up from Provo with three other people. We arrived with a jute bag that contained three bottles of red wine, and all of it got consumed! Given that the designated driver didn't consume much, and given that I was drinking more than my share, it's clear that I put down more than 750 mililiters of (excellent) wine during my dinner. It's amazing that I remember anything of my meal, and it's amazing that I felt fine the next morning. The wine really was good; that's probably the explanation. The Tree Room is about 10-to-the-10 times better than anything else that I've been to in Utah. If you remember that most people in Provo think that caffeine and alcohol are the work of the devil, you can see why. This place is elegant and potentially a bit fussy; I withheld the fifth star because the ratio between price and quality was a bit higher than I'm used to. Also, my cheese plate (two cheeses, some local organic honey, and baby almonds kissed by angels) struck me as a bit pretentious and over the top. (One of the cheeses, a baby fog of some sort made by the people who make Humboldt Fog, was less good than the Humboldt Fog that I'm accustomed to.) For the record, I had an onion tart as a starter and then the braised short ribs as a main dish. Braised short ribs are on everyone's menu these days, but the idea of adding foie gras to the plate struck me as wonderfully decadent (but almost surely not as original to the Tree Room). There's a whole bunch of Robert Redford stuff on the walls and on the shelves of a waiting room near the reception area. The receptionist told us that RR wanders in from time to time and that he's a great guy. I've never met him, but he did stop by during the predecessor to the conference that I attended. He wished eveyone well and expressed the hope that the attendees would have a happy and productive time. The Tree Room is worth a detour if you're even vaguely in the area. It's not cheap but you'll get an excellent meal. If you bring your own wine, make sure that it has Utah tax stickers on it -- otherwise the staff will not allow you to drink it on the premises. read more

I travel to Utah frequently for work and like to try new restaurants. The Tree Room was upscale without being uncomfortably so. In fact, I was amused by the double tables of Japanese tourists having a rolicking good time while I dined alone. I had a beet salad appetizer-amazing presentation on that, then a pepper steak with mashed potatos and mango chutney. Everything was cooked to perfection. And even better, my waiter comped my dessert. Probably because I was the only lone diner in the place and had that air of Steve Martin in the Lonely Guy. All in all it was a great meal & the only reason I haven't gone back is that when I submitted my expense report I discovered that there's a $25 limit on dinners. Oops! read more

Really liked this restaurant. I was on a business trip in Provo, Utah and we were told to head to Sundance. Sundance at first looked a little deserted but there are two small restaurants there. The Tree Room alone makes it worth the 20 min drive. The atmosphere was nice. There's a great view of the woods/mountain through a huge windows and the whole place has a quaint, rustic feel (it still felt modern though). The food was great. I had a Waygu Hanger Steak and Sea Scallops to start. The flavours were well balanced and the dishes were plated nicely. My only quip is that the steak i ordered came medium vs. the medium rare I ordered. If you're in the area, I highly recommend this place. read more

You must try the Sundance roll, a white roll with nuts and grapes that is served warm, the Seared Scallops, scallops seared and placed in a delicious sauce that reminded me of corn and curry, and the Peppered Steak was tender and cooked perfectly. The food was fantastic! It found it difficult to narrow down what to eat as an entrée. So I decided to have the Tree Room Pepper Steak Buttermilk Mashed Potatoes, Spinach, Mango Chutney. The Pepper Steak was amazing, If you like pepper as I, then you will enjoy a burst of pepper followed my a sweet flavors from the Mango Chutney that both compliment and mellow. I was told this is one of their signature dishes and that has been on the menu forever, according to Tyler (server). He said that they rotate their menu and when removed this dish, they received negative feedback so the brought the dish back due to popular demand. I am not a big steak eater, but wow, I would have a difficult time not eating this again, perhaps my doctor would prefer I order the Halibut next time. For Panna Cotta lovers, I recommend the Blue Cheese Panna Cotta Fresh Berries, Ewe's Blue Cheese, Hazelnuts, Aged Sherry Vinegar, Alanzia Olive Oil topped with micro herbs. I am intrigued by anything Panna Cotta and it did live up to my expectations. I also sampled some of the Heirloom Tomato Panzanella Salad and that was enjoyable. For chocolate lovers, I recommend the Warm Chocolate Truffle Cake Rocky Road Ice Cream, Almond Caramel Sauce with toasted slivered almonds for dessert. For wine, I enjoyed a glass of the 2007 DeLoach-Sundance Pinot Noir, Russian River with the entrée. Tyler, my server recommended that I sample the 2003 Altamura-Sundance, Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa and that would have been better with the Pepper Steak The service there was 5 star from the moment we arrived for our reservation, my guest and I were greeted with a smile start to finish. Tyler was most helpful and assisted us in narrowing down our entrée selection. My colleague has been to the Tree Room before and last time we were in town on business they were booked. Later, after talking to Tyler on what a wonderful we just both had and my colleague asking more questions about Sundance (Robert Redford's wine collection) that he has been serving there for about 14 years. I really enjoyed Tyler referring to Robert as 'Bob', since my name is Robert and my dad's name is Bob. I agree with Rachel M comments, that the servers"didn't interrupt the flow of conversation". Not enough can be said about this place. The ambiance is unique and breathtaking. The service is superb. The food is to die for. I've even eaten next to Robert Redford. Awesome! The pepper steak with mango chutney is what I order every time. You just cant go wrong. I have also tasted some of the most unique things here. Dandelion salad with pickled blueberries and melon. Sounds weird. Separately, the taste is odd. Put put it together and your taste buds go to heaven. The Tree Room is a dining experience. I have reserved it for special events in my life and I have never been disappointed. It's worth every penny. read more
