After a trip to Kah-Nee-Ta Resort, we decided to stop for dinner. The Tollgate Inn looked inviting from the road, so we made the decision to stop. The restaurant was pretty kitschy...lots of knick knacks to gaze upon. I hadn't had chicken potpie in forever, so this was my choice. Boy was it really delicious! Either that, or I was starving! I especially loved the crust...so flaky. And the chicken filling was creamy...mmm...I could really go for that right now! The portion was huge, so I brought home enough for dinner the following evening! I was pretty disappointed with the accompanying salad. Looked like something that came out of a bag. Took my girlfriend for dinner, I had the beef barley soup and the cobb salad, and she had the chicken pot pie. The soup was very hot and delicious with lots of roast beef in it. The cobb salad was large and I've never had one with so many different ingredients lol I don't know if they didn't know how to make one or they just got creative but no worries because it was awesome!! My girlfriends pot pie was like a piece of art work, you can tell the bakery on site had a hand in it. She really liked it. This was thee best chicken and waffle breakfast ever!... the bacon crunch in the waffle was a surprise and big plus... perfect texture... The chicken was amazing... lightly breaded with a spicy sauce and an ample portion... Food has always been decent, but inconsistent hours and rude staff have kept me away for awhile. It's like they don't understand the people coming off the mountains from night ski, want somewhere to go and they are directly turning them away. Also, made a comment about a month ago that their hours posted online (Apple) do not match what I am told at the counter....As of today no change, which is why I am upset and writing this. Every time I try and go here the hours are different and they don't really seem to care how it might affect others, especially when I have literally tried to be accommodating and we left the snow resort early. read more

Came in straight off the airplane, let me tell you, we were HUNGRY and this place was great. Very cute interior, almost like a Cracker Barrel but more small town feeling to it. Old time Sandy business. I stopped in at 11:45am to grab breakfast on a Friday, but they stopped serving breakfast at 11:30am. The restaurant is quaint, old style but very comfortable place to eat. Plenty of seating available and the restaurant was pretty busy. Parking lot was full. I went with lunch, Grilled Ham and cheese sandwich. Really tasty, plenty of delicious ham, and the bread was a perfect compliment. I had a salad as my side. Some might complain portions are small but not me. Service was friendly. It was our wedding anniversary - 22 years! Yah! And we couldn't have asked for a better server. Ali did an amazing job of making us feel at home. Yes, the food was comforting - I had that enormous pot pie - so big and rich I had to take 1/2 home. My salad was as salads go - a salad with dressing and random "things" included. The wife had a steak with onions atop, sauteed veggie and a baker with all the trimmings. She also had the soup which was flavorful and good. I've been going to the Tollgate Inn for years and not much has changed - the same place mats with stories of the old west, the funny pamphlet on the table "What were you doing in 1945" , the pioneer decorum, and the menu for the most part. Unfortunately Ali was not so pleased with a newly acquired chef who seemingly omitted items from the menu of which we inquired and I was okay with it. But she seemed a bit negative regarding the change so that was a bit of a downer. Seriously - customers don't need to know the inner workings or conflicts in the kitchen - we just need to know what's available, what's appetizing and what's going to make or break the bank. As our meal winded down, Ali and her daughter (a hostess) surprised us with cake, candles and a song. Definitely not a place that is high on my list to revisit. Came in during off hours for dinner while we were seated quickly it took a bit for the server to come over. Ordered drinks and then she left and took awhile to come back for the food order. The food came out and was dropped off. I got the chicken fried steak. It was covered in thick almost congealed gravy. The flavor reminded me of a pork sausage. I had two bites before deciding it wasn't for me. A Ruben was also ordered a long with a burger. It was just alright. The only really good thing was the clam chowder. It was homemade and had really good flavor. The server never came back to check on us or to see if everything was up to par. They only came back to drop the check. It was disappointing. The decor was super cute. Little shadow boxes of vintage products adding to the rusticness of the restaurant. Breakfast, lunch & dinner is served 7 days a week and like they themselves say "We've got everything from strawberry waffles to fresh-baked cinnamon rolls, mushroom Swiss burgers to hot roast beef sandwiches, and shrimp fettuccine to prime rib." And that's no lie, the Tollgate Inn menu is ginormous! We were with friends who are regulars at the Tollgate Inn (on our way to the Sandy Arts & Crafts Festival) and stopped to have breakfast. I had the kielbasa sausage & eggs ($10.50). And three eggs are the standard by the way. It came with hash browns or home fries, toast, pancakes, or fruit. I got my 3 eggs scrambled, an English muffin and fruit. It was OK, nothing special. Husband got the ham steak & eggs ($10.50) with home fries and swirled rye toast. Same OK, nothing special. Our two friends got the house-made sausage patty & eggs ($9.50) with hash browns and biscuit. Fortunately we had already had our morning quota of coffee before we got there and our friends warned us not to order any. Weak and watery, like our parents used to drink. ROFL. Service was friendly and quick. Food came quickly too. It is a great place to look around since the décor is Americana-like. I saw toys displayed on the shelves I used to play with as a child! The old school book readers, kitchenware, plates, dishes, etc., really amazing. The restaurant is clean too. The Tollgate Inn is also a full-service, made-from-scratch bakery, offering everything from seasonal fruit pies to muffins, bear claws to cookies, and cannoli's to cupcakes. If you can't find what you want here, it probably doesn't exist. There's also a gift shop and they carry lots of the old-fashioned candy some of us remember from childhood. Tonight I had the worst meal I've ever had at Tollgate. I ordered the Yankee pot roast with mashed potatoes and gravy, a roll and sautéed zucchini. The zucchini was barely warm. The mashed potatoes which were incredibly mediocre were also barely warm, as was the roast. I RARELY complain about the temperature of my meal but this was ridiculous. I stopped my waiter and told him the meal was cold. He took it back and 15 min later, I got another plate that was barely hot at best. The potatoes were dry and flavorless. The roast was so tough I could barely chew it and left most of it on my plate. The gravy, also barely warm, was out of a can or a package. Plus they put a skimpy amount on the meat and potatoes. How could a once grand restaurant serve food like I got today? I gave it 2 stars only because of the good service. read more

I've been loving this place since my first visit in 2011,but we have had a disappointing experience today. Before we were seated,I asked if it was ok if we sat in that bigger and brighter room,the hostess said it is a different section and took us to the dingy looking room with the fireplace I personally don't like. I thought maybe they just wanted to keep all the customers in one room for the waitresses' convenience,but when I passed by that big room,I saw quite a few customers sitting there hmm I had requested where I'd like to sit before and it was never an issue. I ordered what I like on the menu the most-an impressive looking and delicious French toast. Well,today it was pathetic,a shadow of what it used to be. Here are some pictures for comparison. I hope it was a bad toast day and they haven't started cutting corners... I used to really love the food at Tollgate. For years, I have counted on coming here to get my chicken fried steak fix. The last two times that I've been here, it has been unappealing to say the least. The first time I thought that it might have been because of an off day. But tonight I realized that it will probably continue to be like this -- kind of greasy and very fatty, not seasoned properly at all. The mashed potatoes are super dry. I did not complain, as I realize that doesn't change the fact that it will never be the same. The wait staff is always pleasant and helpful--I've never had an issue in that area. read more

If you want a sandwich....you might as well get the best available and that's at the Tollgate. There is a restaurant and a deli that allows you to purchase lunches to go and the bakery goods. Reasons to get your lunch here: -They make their own bread -The soup of the day is excellent -Bakery goodies here are amazing!!!! -The staff is incredibly nice and helpful. The deli also has expresso and teas available. I go here because I have to go here for work regularly. This review is specifically for 2 Mike's Saloon, part of the whole Tollgate Inn complex. When I peeked in the restaurant it was all old people and crying babies and just not my scene, but the saloon is really cool. It's dark (not in a shady way), with lots of wood and a handful of booths, clean, and decorated with sweet, old school sports memorabilia. There are some impressive flat screen TVs in there as well. The people all seemed friendly and it was pretty quiet and relaxed even though there were quite a few patrons in there. My favorite part of 2 Mikes (both times I went) was the grub. I LOVE that they use fresh baked bread from Tollgate's bakery with all the burgers and sandwiches. It definitely bumps up the quality of the food in a big way. I got a cheese burger and there was nothing about it I didn't like. The onion rings are BOMB. They have a full bar and some tasty cocktails too! If you're ever on a road trip and passing through Sandy / Gresham skip out on the fast food and hold out for 2 Mike's. It's worth it. read more

One of my favorite things about the Tollgate is that when you walk in you know it is a friendly atmosphere. My favorite things to order here are the french toast and the omelets. Both are good sized portions and are yummy. They also serve a eggs benedict that satisfies the appetite. If you have some spare time, stop into the little giftshop/bakery that is next to the restaurant. They sell old school candy, make delicious pastries and desserts and their sandwiches are good too. If you are ever in the Sandy area, it is worth it to make a stop at the Tollgate. This is definitely one of my favorite breakfast places. read more

I come into the restaurant to have a relaxing day. I sat down in the booth. I looked at the menu and I wasn't extremely hungry, but maybe something light so I told her I didn't want to pay a lot of money and waste the food because I don't take home leftovers. She said nothing. She mumbled as she was walking away very fast and then came back with a children's menu and it kind of threw me back a little and I looked at it and I said I don't want anything on here. I don't want tater tops and french fries She threw her hand back and said then go somewhere else and ran away from me. I sat there with my mouth open as I have never been treated like that before never I'm 83 years old. I got upset and I had the fork and napkin in my hand, and I threw it on the seat and called her a name and I couldn't believe that anybody a waitress would treat you that way . Then I went next-door to the bakery part as I was walking out the door a customer said go over there they have sandwiches and I said oh that's nice. I will go over there so I go over there being upset and the girls I told them about it and they were sympathetic with me and I said well let me talk to the manager and you know I don't think it was the right thing to do so I waited a few minutes and he came out and I told him started to tell him what happened and he says well I would've done the same thing to you were very rude to her. He did not want to hear my part of the story whatsoever I was extremely upset, and I did carry-on, because it was my worst nightmare that I ever had and I just lost control of yelling. And some man customer come up and he got right in my face and was pushing me. It was so horrible thing. I'll never forget. I will tell everyone about this. she took her bad day out on me. Just had the absolute worst experience at the tollgate inn. Normally i love this place but after waiting 45 min for our food (which was luke warm) it comes out and my moms bacon is completely raw. Like disgusting. We're on a time constraint so we asked to have the bacon comped the waitress said she couldn't do that but cooking the bacon right would only take a second. We waited 5-10 more mins. Already had the check but no food. We went up to the front to pay because we had to go. We have a funeral to go to today and the waitress comes up to the counter and throws the food the check and my card at my mother. Absolutely disgusted with how this waitress acted today. Wont EVER be giving them out business again. Update :was responded to this by a family member of a worker attacking me stating "she remembered us and to get over ourselves" oh I remember you too you sat behind my mother with your unruly children and the staff (waitresses and cooks) kept coming up and sitting with you guys. You complained we got our food first well yeah because Y'all were more worried about talking then ordering. Oh and let's not forget we got our food RAW. Our server was Meagan, and she was friendly, attentive, personable, and professional. I ordered the Asian salad and a bowl of gazpacho. Both were excellent - especially the soup. I was so disappointed in our meal Sunday. They left the bacon out of the meatapalooza omelet and cut back on the toast. The Rueben sandwich had three chunks of corned beef that were half an inch thick and you couldn't bite into it. Looks like they are still working from a scaled back Covid menu too. Other than a terrific waitress the experience was not a good one. I called to talk to the manager this morning and she was not helpful at all. As a longtime customer I would have appreciated her listening to me instead of being dismissive. We spent a hundred dollars for six meals and left a great tip. Not the waitresses fault the cooks messed up. The restaurant was not busy either. We were the only ones on the non fireplace side. It is embarrassing to many people to make complaints during the meal so I thought it over and decided to call today. I honestly think a gift card was in order to show they gave a darn. read more
