Have been here a couple times for breakfast. Chorizo burrito once and then the Kielbasa Hash. The food is good and a lot of it. The table also had the strawberry French toast reported as really good. Both times I have had friendly, accommodating servers. More creamer, more whipped cream... we got it! The place itself is a step back in time. Historical building where there used to be an actual toll to go up to Mount Hood! Be sure to go to the bakery afterward, or just stop by the bakery on your way through. I always love coming here. I was in the area today and took the opportunity to have lunch. Today I ordered chicken pot pie with a side of tots. Both were good. The chicken pot pie for me was missing vegetables. They were a little slivers and Bitz here and there, but for the most part, it was chicken soup in a crust. The tots were fresh and hot very very tasty. In fact, I threw some tots into my chicken pot pie and it was amazing. A whole new dimension. My server was great, so friendly and welcoming. read more

Busy. Don't bother with their online table reservations if you're going around dinner time- there will be a wait list anyway. We arrived at 5:30 and the kitchen was behind so we were not able to be seated until 5:40 and our food didn't come until 6:40. But they were very nice about the service, and as we had to leave before 7:30, a free slice of cake came after we paid the bill. Excellent food! Excellent price. It will be part of our Memorial Day Tour in the spring. read more

What a fun place to stop and have a meal! Along with delicious food from a fairly large menu and super attentive service, there's a bakery & gift shop adjacent to the main dining room. My stop here was made with a big group of people (14 of us in total) and even though they didn't have any prior notice that we were coming, they were gracious and welcoming, setting up two large tables that accommodated all of us. Each table had its own server which made ordering and being served our food so much easier. Kudos to Tollgate Inn for the accommodation! I ordered a tuna melt and upgraded the fries that came with it to onion rings with a side of BBQ sauce. The sandwich was perfectly grilled, the onion rings the best I've had in a very long time, and the BBQ sauce was super tasty. After lunch, I was hoping for a croissant from the bakery but they didn't have any... so I opted for some Cracker Jacks instead. The bakery/gift shop is full of lots of things to look at, little things to buy for souvenirs or take-home items, and of course, that bakery case is full of delicious-looking taste treats. Tollgate Inn is a fun place to visit - check out all the things they've hung on the walls over the years. My family and I saw the Conestoga wagon out front and were hooked! Went into the bakery...OMG and got some chocolate, then met my adult children for dinner outside on the patio. Delicious Cobb Salad and conversation, despite the normal traffic interruptions from the "race car drivers" who wanted our attention. Doing my camping adventure traveling the Pacific Northwest from California I celebrated my birthday this past Monday with a hike at Mount Hood and lunch at this gem. I ordered the French Dip with a side of Tater Tots and it really hit the spot. The food, quality, price and the amount of what you get is a plus in my book. The waitress was friendly, down to Earth, had great customer service and most important amazing. I traveled to the Pacific Northwest very often to visit my friends and family and I will be sure to stop by this place again for the food and the staff. P.S. I had biscuits and gravy: my guest had the chicken fried steak breakfast with "home fries". We were surprised the gravy was so dark when it arrived. it had a funky taste. As a former cook, I calked it up to "drippings" gravy as it can be a little darker than regular gravy or gravy from an instant gravy mix. The home fries were cool to the touch and soggy. We did get some regular hash browns. The chicken fried steak was fresh and not frozen. today I am suffering discomfort in my stomach. I can only suspect that it's from the gravy that I had at tollgate Inn. If you go to the tollgate Inn do not have the gravy if the gravy is dark. do not order the fries as they're not traditional fries and the ones I had were soggy. read more

I grew up going to Tollgate, and it's sad to see how much it has gone downhill over the years. Some of the staff are still wonderful and give great service, but others seem less invested, which makes the experience inconsistent. Unfortunately, the food has been the biggest disappointment--it just isn't what it used to be, and each visit it seems to slip a little more. I really hope they can bring back the quality and consistency that made this place such a favorite in the past. read more

I have passed this place so many times going to Mount Hood and have always wondered about it. Kind of breezed by it because of the mediocre reviews. Had the day off through the week so decided to stop because it didn't seem excessively crowded. Was extremely surprised by the quality of food! All the tastes were spot on. Chicken and waffles, biscuits and gravy, and cinnamon roll. Was on a All-carb diet that day, obvi, haha! Waffle had cheddar cheese so it gave it an interesting Sharp contrast with the sweet real maple syrup. The chicken was juicy and the breading with seasoned perfectly. My only complaint was the chicken portion was very small. The cinnamon roll was much better than it looked. Very soft and fresh and the icing was delicious. The star of the show for me though was the biscuits and gravy. The buttermilk biscuits were very fresh and probably the best I've ever had. The gravy was absolutely amazing. I think also the best sausage gravy I've ever had. Service was very very slow, however, although friendly and accommodating once they got around to greeting us at our table. Sat for about 15 minutes before anyone even came over to ask if we wanted coffee or anything. Then goes to it again for another 20 minutes to take our food order. For the biscuits and gravy alone I will give them all the passes for slightly less than par service! The prices weren't outrageous either so all in all I would say definitely worth a stop and dealing with slow service. read more

Think of Cracker Barrel without the gift shop for atmosphere...clean and kitschy place. Service is friendly. Food is just okay nothing special. Home fries are wedges vs small chunks which was good. Ham slice slightly undercooked but generous. Eggs cooked okay but on the small side. Toast was basic. Nothing arrived hot...just warm. Coffee tasted good but it was a small cup. Refills limited while eating as service was intermittent..not crowded so it was a trade-off. Price reasonable for the meal. I would go back and try something different next time. read more

My biscuits and gravy were delicious and the biscuits clearly made in house. My husband was impressed by his Chorizo Crunch melt. Add to that very reasonable prices! The decor is fun (we like historical things). Indoubt the avocado toast crowd will appreciate Tollgate, but we surely do. I highly recommend Tollgate Inn for breakfast. read more

My friend and I have been coming here for years for their vegatarian meatless burgers. They now use "Impossible" patties and charge $3 more. The patties were very small and tasted of meat grease. The tater tots also tasted of grease. I started getting nauseous driving home and kept a barf bag by the bed all night. Still have a queasy tummy today. Can't say we won't be back but will not be ordering those "burgers" again. Boca Burgers are so much better! The wait staff are always great here. And of course the place has so much memorabilia from the Oregon Trail. We recommend for that reason alone. The gift shop and bakery are great. read more

We came for the cute vibes - but the food was very tasty and our server, Kelli, was so lovely and attentive. I ordered chicken fried steak and was pleasantly surprised - the patty wasn't just a regular hamburger (you can tell by the texture of the meat) and the gravy was very flavorful, but not too salty. The cooks know what they're doing! Wrapped up the meal with Settlers Sunrise cake a la mode - the zingy lemon and raspberry jam really hit the spot. On our way back from a camping trip, we decided to stop for lunch somewhere along the way. Starting in Bend, I had intentions to hit up one of our favorite places, only to find it was closed on Tuesdays. Lame. Oh well, I had a short list of four other restaurants that we loved, or that I wanted to try, that were all on the route back home. And as we pulled up to each consecutive restaurant, in order, we found that they were ALL closed on Tuesdays. Every. Single. One. Well, except for the Tollgate Inn, which was the last one on the list, and the closest to home. Still, I was happy to finally make it out to the Tollgate. This pioneer-themed, family friendly (and dog friendly! yay, patio!) restaurant, with attached bakery and saloon, had been on my radar for a while, reasserting itself in my memory every time I drove by it on some road trip or another. But today was the day! We arrived at that awkward interval between lunch and dinner; the restaurant was basically deserted, but despite the immediate lack of customers, the hostess seemed a bit befuddled and bumbling, but eventually managed to help us find a table, despite having nothing else to do. Once we were seated, our server, Vanessa, conversely proved to be incredible, especially in comparison to her co-worker: she was fantastic in all aspects of service, from start to finish, as well as being personable, patient, and on top of everything. More servers need to be like her! Having struck out on multiple restaurants on the way back home, plus an unexpected delay on the highway due to construction, we were all famished by the time we ordered. Each of the boys ordered off the kids menu, while my wife ordered the wedge salad, myself the Steak Frites, and the Totchos (tater tot nachos) to share around the table. Everything arrived swiftly, with the appetizer landing first, and the entrees maybe 5 or so minutes behind. The totchos were...alright: my wife remarked that the cheese and meat both seemed artificial, almost like vegan substitutes, but that didn't seem to phase anyone from clearing the plate. Each of the kids meals went down without complaint (and anyone who has kids knows how difficult THAT can be!). My wife enjoyed her wedge salad, although the pickled onions were a bit much for her sensitive pregnancy palate (more for me! woot!). Sadly though, I was less than impressed with my Steak Frites. The fries were great, but the steak itself was a little undercooked for my taste (and I like 'em medium rare), and sadly lacking a sear of any kind. It says "cooked to order", but I don't remember being asked for my preference. The meat just felt limp and cold. The spinach didn't help do much for the experience, and the red wine gastrique was nearly undetectable. The bleu cheese was fantastic, and helped salvage the experience, but there wasn't nearly enough of it. Overall, we were a little dissatisfied with the meal itself, but the experience overall was just fine. I'm sure that if I'd ordered something else, I probably would have had better things to say, because other than some lazy missteps in the kitchen, or perhaps a lack of attentiveness on my part, the Tollgate did things competently, in all other facets of our visit. The price to feed all five of us was definitely reasonable, and helped soften the blow a bit. With a little more effort and quality control, I'd be willing to pay the toll again for an upgraded experience. read more

We easily got a table on a Saturday morning with no wait, the service was fast and friendly, and the ambiance was cozy and classic. Don't let the casual country interior fool you, the food is high end 5 star quality. I had the calamari and blackened salmon salad. Horrible food. You know it's bad when we you have to go to McDonalds afterwards. I've enjoyed the calamari strips many times, but this time they weren't strips and were badly overcooked and burnt, making them inedible. My partner's Rueben was not toasted or grilled and bread was a soggy mess. They make good cocktails, but we won't be back. read more

(Minus the roll, but the food was so good, we didn't want the rolls anyway) Our server, Shane, was a great fan of the food he served up and was so personable. He seemed genuinely happy to work there which says a lot about a place IMHO. Our travels take us through Sandy fairly often and although we Joe's Donut Shop, we were very happy to find a good place to get a great meal. We stopped in for a quick dinner between seeing different Christmas light displays and reindeer. We ordered mozzarella sticks as an appetizer, the center was still frozen. Sent them back, when get them back, they were over cooked where almost all the cheese has dripped out, so we had hollow mozzarella sticks with marinara sauce. I ordered pulled pork loaded nachos, the cheese was room temp and the pulled pork wasn't even warm. I sent the nachos back, 5-7 minutes later, my nachos came back. The cheese was hot, the pulled pork wasn't, it was just above room temperature. I could hear the cooks in the back complaining that the nachos were "120°". There's absolutely no way, when my toddler can touch it and say, "this isn't warm dad". I am not interested in potentially getting food poisoning or anyone at my table getting sick. I am not what sure what happened, this used to be a great place to grab food. Now, 3 different times and they couldn't get food hot, let alone warm enough to where I'm comfortable eating it or letting my family eat it. Definitely, will not be returning anytime soon. read more

I am a first time visitor to Sandy, Oregon and was really looking forward to The Tollgate Restaurant --- and possibly they are struggling as they are looking for a cook. I had a great Cuban sandwich, and Hubby had a realllly disappointing Chicken Fried Steak (first attempt burned on one side and turned over....did you think we wouldn't notice?).....poor quality meat beaten to a pulp to "tendorize" and 2nd attempt was falling apart along with being stringy meat. How about not serving this when there's a known problem. The good points were service and the fabulous bakery next door to this restaurant. read more

We got Brussels sprouts for an appetizer and they were delicious! Bacon and blue cheese crumbles made these very tasty! I had the chicken fried steak. Very tasty. Homemade. Always a plus. We had breakfast here on a fall Sunday. Huge fireplace provided warmth and ambiance. Not a huge selection on the menu, but enough variety in choices to make everyone happy.
