Made a visit to The Tavern during graduation weekend! We made a reservation for a party of 9, our table was ready when we arrived, and the hostess was very welcoming. Our waitress greeted us and offered drinks while we waited for the remainder of our guests. The stars of this dinner were the tikka masala hummus and shrimp dip appetizers! The hummus was seasoned with curry and other spices *chefs kiss! You know it's good when 2 guests said they don't like hummus, tried it, and we're fighting for the last spoonful! The shrimp dip is served hot w/ toast bites and all I can say is we should've ordered 2 servings of both appetizers. For entrees most of us ordered the tavern burger, steak, and fish of the day. The only little concern was the entrees came out lukewarm and my hamburger bun was cold; not a deterrent to return again. Part of the McNellie's Group, I've reviewed several of their restaurants, including Bull in the Alley, City Hall Steakhouse, and Mr. Kim's, the latter being a favorite. On the recommendation of Adam Green of Mac's Barbeque and accompanied by Rick Shaw, I was eager to see what chef Austin Plumlee new fall menu had to offer. Bacon Popcorn This elevated popcorn features a wonderful salty sweet caramel-esque crust intermixed with delightful tiny bits of bacon. The sweet/salty combination is delightful and a great replacement for traditional pub snack mix. Tikka Masala Hummus The hummus dish features curried chicken, cilantro lime yogurt, chili crunch, and grilled pita bread, offering a unique and delicious twist. The initial flavor notes include warm spices like cumin, cardamom, coriander, and cinnamon, which blend seamlessly into the nutty chickpea middle. End notes of chili, cooling yogurt, and spiced chicken complete each bite. This exotic take on hummus highlights Chef Plumlee's expert balance of spices, ensuring all components work harmoniously to elevate the dish. It's a well-executed and flavorful offering. Roasted Beets Beets are coated in a blackberry vinaigrette, paired with horseradish labneh, and topped with pepita dukkah for a delightful contrast in flavors and textures. Tavern Burger The vaunted Tavern Burger features a challah bun, Stilton cheese, mushroom cognac cream, and shoestring fries. Cooked to a perfect medium-rare, each bite begins with the bold, funky notes of Stilton, giving way to rich beef and earthy mushroom flavors, complemented by the soft, slightly sweest challah. The burger is succulent and hearty, though the fries were a touch too salty. One criticism: the Stilton occasionally overpowered the beef, however overall, this is a beautiful burger that lives up to its reputation. Roasted Chicken The chicken, sourced from Prairie Creek Farms, is cooked to perfection and served atop a rich duck fat gravy, accompanied by gnocchi, parmesan, and a drizzle of charred onion truffle oil. The crisp chicken skin and smoky onion notes evoke comforting flavors, reminiscent of Thanksgiving. The gnocchi adds a dumpling-like texture, similar to chicken pot pie. However, the gnocchi was slightly overcooked and tough. Despite this, the dish is an embodiment of fall, with warm, hearty flavors shining through. Seared Scallops The U10 scallops were expertly cooked and served atop butternut risotto, complemented by bacon marmalade, pepitas, and chili crunch. The flavor profile is distinctive, with sweet scallop notes transitioning into the savory, slightly sharp taste of bacon, and finishing with earthy sage. The combination of scallop, bacon, onion, and sage creates a unique experience. The creamy risotto provides balance, while the pepitas add a satisfying crunch. However, the risotto was slightly softer than ideal, lacking the desired al dente texture. Charred Broccolini Chef Plumlee achieved a wonderful flavor profile with this side dish. The broccolini, slightly bitter and perfectly charred, develops an almost smoky, beefy flavor that elevates the vegetable. The charred exterior adds depth, making the simple ingredient taste rich and satisfying. It's a fantastic combination that brings out the best of the broccolini, showcasing chef Plumlee's ability to turn a humble vegetable into something extraordinary. Tres Leches Carrot Cake This fall dessert, crafted by chef Audrey Long, is a decadent delight. The moist carrot cake is soaked in tres leches, topped with a tangy frosting and cream, while bits of walnut add the perfect texture to avoid a one-dimensional dish. Each bite coats the palate with notes of cinnamon, nutmeg, and the essence of fall. It's a wonderfully balanced and delicious dessert, capturing the warmth of the season. Final thoughts The Tavern absolutely lives up to its reputation and more, offering pub fare elevated to the realm of fine dining refinement. Each dish was dynamic in both flavor and texture. While some elements were slightly off, the flavor combinations were incredible, with highlights from the Tres Leches Cake, Tikka Masala Hummus, Chicken, and Broccolini. The deviled eggs are delicious, and at our last stop we tried the new Queso Birria which was very good! You can't go wrong with delicious birria meat on top of gooey cheese! Also, the poutine is great- it's made with thick hash brown patties topped with shredded and tender beef and brown gravy with green chilies and cheese curd. The atmosphere is masculine with leather and books, but also romantic softer touches here and there. It's classy, yet comfortable. The bar is extensive, and the drinks are flavorful. Our server tonight was named Lucky, and he was the perfect blend of attentive, but not overbearing. My husband and I shared an appetizer, and each had an entreé, and a cocktail, and before tip, our bill was $90. We started with the Deviled Egg Trifecta and the Bacon Popcorn. Both were delicious. The Sriracha DeviledEgg is pretty amazing. Jacob and I decided to split two meals. Way to go Jacob. He had the Pumpkin Campanelle. Wow! The creamy subtle pumpkin flavor with the pungent smooth goat cheese...and that sausage. He didn't want to share after having it. lol. I had the Bone In Pork Chop which came with collard greens, cassoulet and mustard seeds with the tiniest jalapeno cornbread muffin. That pork chop really packed the flavor. The mustard seed on top really was a nice accompaniment. The collards were super, a little crisp and fresh but yet not bitter with a nice flavor. I honestly didn't have terribly high expectations checking the menu online (was afraid of a hoity toity overpriced concept with nothing to show for it) but BOY was I surprised. I had the tavern burger and it may be one of the best burgers I've had in my entire life. It was understated and mellow how the flavors of the mushroom cream sauce and Stilton complemented one another but it was stunningly good. The salt level was also surprising; it was salt forward without being too salty, in my opinion, which just brought out all the flavor in the excellent meat cooked a perfect medium. And the fries were my favorite skinny style. All around, I was a happy camper. My aunt was with me and she made a meal of the poutine appetizer (made with filet mignon y'all). She was very, very pleased. And the staff was so friendly and sociable. I felt incredibly well taken care of and very comfortable. The manager, Cameron said sorry and that someone was probably unaware that they were assigned to my table. I called him on it, because several waiters had walked by without any kind of acknowledgment. If I had seen someone sitting by themself with an empty glass, and the menu set aside as if they're ready to order, I would stop by and ask if there was anything I could do to assist them. Per our waitress's recommendation, we started our meal with the Birria Queso. Both Grant and I were a little worried when we first saw it, but ended up being over the moon for the dish. The savory meat placed in the piping hot, delicious cheese dip was almost addictive. It was really fantastic and was served with house fried chips! Our entrees were also fantastic. Grant enjoyed the pork chop, which had a really nice barbecue glaze on it, and I had the beef stroganoff.
