Wow! Our family had an outstanding dining experience last night at The Switchboard!! Stephen took great care of us, delivering such unexpectedly excellent cocktails and food. We enjoyed craft cocktails with a local theme and yummy kailua pork fries, Brussel sprouts, New England clam chowder (an excellent broth base and incredible clams and veggies), Korean bbq beef lettuce wraps, the Hawaiian lunch plate, island fried chicken sandwich and delicious banana lumpia for dessert. The wait staff did an amazing job considering there were only two of them. That said, they could benefit from a third person to maybe limit their stress. (I mean, unless they prefer that.) Cute little spot at the bottom floor of a hotel in Oceanside. Came with my parents, hubs, and two toddlers. While the location isn't exactly built for toddlers (only 1 high chair and tables are high and seats too low) the hostess/ waitress helped us make the best of it on their couch. There is a children's menu which we did not order off of. We had a few spills and requests and the Waitress was very kind and accommodating! We ordered a number of dishes off of their menu: loco moco, poke bowl, Hawaiian plate and chilaquiles and unfortunately we found their food to be mostly salty and underwhelming. Highlight was probably the PBJ smoothie. Taking another look through their reviews seems others find the food salty as well. Hopefully that message gets across and shared with the cooking staff. Oh my gosh, this was definitely an *experience*, to say the least. It's a bit of a squeeze when you get seated inside but it adds to the intimate environment and atmosphere. (I can definitely see this as a great spot for dates.) I didn't realize that this restaurant and bar had so much history and I love that the owners embrace it. Although it can feel a bit upscale and trendy, I thought the prices were fair to what was being served. Fresh ingredients and the quality often warrants a higher price. By no means is this a casual spot for a quick fix. But the food and special ambiance are well worth the visit. Whether it's the burger or loco moco, the wagyu beef they use is delicious and oh so soft. I had the Korean Loco Moco and I loved the amalgamation of sweet and savory flavors. The portion is pretty decent and the rice does help with filling you up. But I'd recommend ordering some appetizers in addition to the loco moco for those who regularly eat bigger portions. Location is great and right down the street from the beach! My friend and I met here for dinner as a halfway point. We didn't realize it was apart of a hotel until we got there, but the decor inside was very cute. Drinks were tasty and refreshing and the added flowers were a nice touch to give the Hawaiian feel. I would say the food was okay, 9 for presentation & 5/10 for flavor. I say this because it didn't really taste authentic like a usual Hawaiian place where the Mac salad is rich and meat is juicy. They don't claim to be authentic, but it's definitely aligned towards American style. The highlights: the draft Booze Brothers 1-800-Tropics hazy IPA and the Hawaiian plate- Korean beef bulgogi. Our waiter said there was veggies in the vegan fried rice. There were only some green onions on top...but it was still tasty. The A'a & Pahoehoe (fish & chips) was a real let down. Apparently it's usually better. The fish wasn't fried crisp and the halibut itself wasn't flakey. It was very dense like a limp chicken finger. We mentioned to our waiter, Chris, and he offered to take it off our bill and bring us another protein. We opted for the Korean beef (again, that was delicious). So that worked out. Thanks Chris! We also ordered the Teri Huli chicken Hawaiian plate and that was tasty as well. The jalapeño ponzu on the fish and chips was delicious. We used it on everything. The spicy togarashi fries were good too. I'd ask for them extra crispy next time tho. The grilled pineapple remoulade was yummy on the fires. I wouldn't recommend the fish. However the man sitting next to us (clearly a regular) got what appeared to be crispier fish and 3 pieces instead of our 2. Interesting! The Hawaiian plates were served with Mac salad which we had to take home due to being so full. For pupus we got the seared ahi wonton crisps to share (worked great!) They were fine. The kimchi aioli was lacking taste for me and was too mayonnaisey. The dish needed salt. We wish we had the jalapeño ponzu for on top! I had been wanting to try the switchboard for awhile and so glad we came on a Sunday afternoon. The food here is excellent. A little Hawaiian, a little Korean, and a little Oceanside. The ingredients are fresh and the dishes are well craft and plates. The flavor? Chef's kiss! The price point is a little high, but understandable given the quality of meal you are getting. I would recommend the switchboard for a date night or date day. We splurged on everything from drinks to dessert. I loved the Mr. Oside Cocktail. We also had the pineapple creme brûlée for dessert, but wasn't able to grab a pic. I am looking forward to heading out for happy hour from 5-6 M-F where the bill will be a little nicer to my pocket book. We had the Dirty Dolphin and the Drunken Hombre. Drinks were well made and actually tasted good. Gave us a good morning buzz. The bad: Loco moco 1/5 - the large patty was extremely dry. It was cooked well done. This is the main part of the dish but wouldn't recommend it to anyone. The only good part of this dish was the gravy l. Poke Salad 1/5 - the seasoning used for the poke was extremely salty. It was so salty, we had to avoid any of the items touching the sauce at the bottom. Cheeseburger 2/5 - not much to rave about except it's basic. The fries were good though. Hawaiian plate 2/5 - pork was extremely soft which I liked but it seemed to be missing a little bit of that Hawaiian sweet sauce on the side that gets drizzled on. This place had a lot right but unfortunately, they also got a lot wrong. Went in and ordered food to go, my wife got a glass of wine and I had the Tequila Gulán, añejo. The ambiance, the staff, the drinks, all on point. The real hiccup came I can only guess from the kitchen but then again, when your a special order kinda people, I always get nervous when they don't write it down. The girl that took the order did not write it down and when we got back to the house with the food, everyone had things that they asked not to have. Salad with no onions, had onions. Salad asked for with no to,stores, had tomatoes. A couple of other food additions or subtractions were also missed but I had given up paying attention at this point. The wine and tequilas were delicious, that made the whole experience a little more palatable but I do hope they either write special orders down in the future or work on the kitchen staff paying closer attention to the input from the server. We learned there is new ownership and new chef... they are now a part of Hilton. Super bummed out to hear this. Food quality totally went down the drain. The only thing is, I got a lot of bones with my meal. My husband got the fish and chip and he really enjoyed his food too. I saw photos on Yelp which ultimately drove our decision to eat here. Everything looks like plates we'd get in Hawaii. They were good, but not as authentic as the local plates you would get there. We did like the Korean fried chicken and waffle dish the best. The fried chicken was battered and seasoned well and was complemented by the gochujang sauce. The waffle was a little dry and crumbled in some parts. It also had lots of bits of sugar which I normally like, and was just a touch too much for my liking. But overall, it was our favorite dish. The fish and chips were also very good. The dipping sauce is very original and was the perfect sauce. The loco moco was okay. Something about the rice, maybe more Uncle Ben's and not the stickier rice we are accustomed to. The patty was a little bland but overall the dish was okay. My daughter seemed to like it. The kalua pork had good flavor. The mac salad sufficed but not the same as Hawaii. Kalbi was fine. Coffee is really good. Overall, it's not as authentic as Hawaii, but I don't think thats what they're claiming to be. It was good for what we needed that day and actually surprisingly good for a restaurant in a hotel. First time here and we came in a group of 6. We sat at the patio since we have our dogs with us, but we had a long wait before we were able to place our orders as they were quite busy -- given that it was a Friday night. Our food came out much quicker though and the staff compensated by making sure that they are able to attend to us & they were really nice. The inside was clean even the restrooms, they have a few interesting art pieces with quotes from famous people in the cafe area. The food was good but could be better. The sliced orange and pineapple had a funky taste. The chicken and salad were good, and I would say that the chicken was done right - juicy & tender. If you don't know what kimchi is, it's a staple in Korean food and they had hints of it in their menu as well as a side of it. We had the Fin drinks (vodka, slightly fruity but not overpowering) and all of their signature drinks looked great to try. Avocado tower with gochujang sauce was great! Gochujang is a Korean sweet and spicy paste but they way they used it here was genius. This is coming from a girl who grew up (and still eats) on Korean food. If you're okay with a little kick, then you'll like this for your table to share. My friend got the KPOP spicy chicken sandwich and I got the Salmon Poke bowl had all the different ingredients I love-- jalapeños, greens, raw salmon (you can choose ahi tuna if you want), corn, avocado. The Salmon poke bowl flavors together was good. I recommend going for all salad instead of rice. I did half and half. I was contemplating on KPOP and the poke bowl so my friend let me try the KPOP sandwich. I liked the Poke bowl but the KPOP sandwich was FABULOUS! Okay, where to begin. I've been to Switchboard 3 times and it honestly gets better and better! I would go more often but before I make my way I have to make sure the bartender who served me the first time is there. I believe his name is Stephen. The steak was cooked perfectly to a medium rare with a slightly thick sauce or glaze? on top. It added a ever so slight touch of sweetness. It complimented the meat beautifully. I remember liking the vegetables but I was so enamored by the steak I cannot tell you much about them ahaha. My most recent visit was last night and it did not disappoint! I wasn't planning to stop by in as dinner was already planned out at home but I saw the awesome bartender working and couldn't resist! It was packed when I got there and only one seat was available at the bar. Despite the busyness, I was greeted right away and got my drink order in. I ordered the fish and chips per Stephen's recommendations and was pleasantly impressed when it came out! Instead of a big piece of fillet, the fish was cut up like chicken tenders. The Switchboard sets itself apart with its Hawaiian influenced menus and the embrace of its historic location. Service is a team effort, but it's a small team. All of the staff were both incredibly friendly and helpful, but stretched thin; so adapt an island attitude and don't be in a rush and you'll have a great experience. My wife and I were downtown looking for a place to eat and she saw this place advertising Hawaiian food. I got excited because I'm always looking for good local food. I am a native Hawaiian, so I know what it is supposed to taste like. The only reason they get two stars is because the staff was very friendly. Also, if you're going to serve "Hawaiian" food, make sure you actually consult a Hawaiian or two. We got two "Hawaiian Plates" with the chicken, an order of the musubi, and bulgogi lettuce wraps. Let me just say that price vs portion is ridiculous. Way over priced for an extremely small portion of food. Now for the food ~ The "Hawaiian Plate" - There's absolutely nothing Hawaiian about it. The entire plate tasted as if it was from a cheap Chinese takeout. The Mac salad which is the easiest thing to make was disgusting and had no taste. The chicken had a weird texture, and no flavor, and the fried rice was hard, dry and also had hardly any flavor. "Musubi" - First of all $10 for two small, poorly made musubi is a crime. The flavor was fine I guess, but it was made sloppily, and was extremely basic. No sauce, no egg, barely cooked spam, no nothing to justify it being $10. "Bulgogi Lettuce Wraps" - This entire dish is a joke. 4ish little pieces of meat, 2 slivers of bell pepper over a mangy piece of lettuce. It comes with 4 pieces of lettuce total. I do have to say that the flavor of the bulgogi was good, but the portion size for $17 is atrocious. All in all 0/10, we won't be going back. read more

I'm literally sitting in arms reach of you listening to you talk crap about your co-worker's serving abilities while not serving me or being particularly friendly? Probably should have just bailed at that point. Narrowed it down to the Hawaiian plate or chicken katsu sandwich. Asked the (non-manger seeming) girl which I should order and she said 'oh, the katsu sandwich! It's delicious!' so I took her advice and ordered it. Took quite a while to come out but once it did it looked really good. This was the best experience of the lunch. When they set that sandwich in front of me and it looked really good-at first. Thick grilled bread, looked like a good amount of chicken, lots of fries that looked tasty. The bread was good but the chicken was overcooked, bland, and really dry. Like you could look at it and see that it was too dark and had been overcooked. This should never come out of the kitchen. Pretty consistent of the whole vibe of the place though. The manager girl asked me 'how's everything tasting'. She had been to each table asking the same and I was her last stop. She didn't look at me or stop moving really when she asked so I just said 'eh, pretty good'. My delivery, while polite, was very obviously unhappy. She said great and moved on. I ate half and asked for a box for the rest. I should have said something or sent it back but I don't do that.. So, I've got half of an overcooked chicken sandwich waiting the requisite couple days in my fridge to be tossed out. The place is really cool. Like the décor, it's walkable to my place which is cool. Full bar with some decent sounding cocktails and good beers. Not sure I'm willing to give them another shot though. It is attached to a historic hotel that has recently rebranded as "the Fin". During WWII the hotel was used as a communication center hence the name Switchboard. Cute switchboard decor, and vintage style lighting. Service: friendly, efficient I arrived in the sweet spot between breakfast and lunch, I chose to have the lunch menu. I sat at a small table facing towards coast highway, the bench seat was cushioned and had cute decorative pillows. It really is a cozy little place. As I looked over the menu I enjoyed an iced maple latte. Sweet and flavorful, served in a cute tall glass. There were so many options, I took my time reading over the menu! The menu has Hawaiian/Korean/Asian fusion choices meshed with American food staples. I chose the Kalua pork fries, so good, flavorful, fresh and crispy.
