This place is a chill restaurant at the bottom floor of a hotel. Having lived in the area my life, I never thought to come here until my friend visiting from out of town decided that we should go, and I'm glad she did! Very cozy and well decorated, the folks who work here are also very sweet and helpful. The environment was chatty and my friend and I had an espresso martini and I had one of their kombuchas, which were both solid. I got the fish tacos and my friend got the pork fries, and honestly I feel like the food was just okay. The portions were smaller than anticipated, the fish tacos and chips were both very dry. This has taken me a couple of days to think about because I wanted this to be a hit. We just finished watching Lilo & Stitch so what perfect way to follow up the movie, but a Hawaiian lunch that wasn't fast food. However, due to a few things, I think there's potential to improve. 1. The space - its awkwardly small. The bar takes half the space and I'm really unsure how they handle a busy Friday night. The Fin hotel had a lobby, the switchboard restaurant, and then a coffee shop. The restaurant has 3 tables, plus bar seating. 2. Entrance - no one greeted us. We didn't know where to go to get seated. One couple was eating at a table, and another pair of guys were at the bar. My partner eventually walked to the coffee shop to check where to get seated and someone came out to help us. 3. Seating arrangement - at first, my party of 3 was going to be seated in the corner, awkwardly next to the old couple who was already taking up the table snuggly right next to it. We asked if we can sit at the table by the window. A third chair was pulled up and I sat partly in the walkway space. 4. Brunch menu - great selection of food, but limited in vegetarian options. I was excited to see that tofu was an option for the Hawaiian plate. In fact, my whole party of 3 ordered the Hawaiian plate, but we each chose different proteins - tofu, Kahlua pork, and bulgogi beef. I eat tofu A LOT. I cook tofu A LOT. This tofu was WEAK and I was UNimpressed. It was literally cooked on a flat top with maybe a tsp of soy sauce? I couldn't taste it, if thats what made it brown (although it could've been oil). How could you serve 3 slabs of tofu with a touch of furikake and call it $23? It needed more flavor (like teriyaki) or it also could have been made crispy with some cornstarch and panko and turn it into tofu katsu. So much potential! I had a taste of the bulgogi and kahlua (i had hope for this spot), and they actually had flavor. The Hawaiian mac was the best part of my plate. The fried rice was fine; I added the hot sauce they provided. 5. Service - was OK at first, but he didn't ask any one of us if we wanted white rice or fried rice with our Hawaiian plates. For some reason, all three of us got the fried rice. We didn't think anything of it because maybe we misread the menu, but here comes the bill and a $2 extra charge times 3. So they seated us outside in the lobby next door, which was shared with the Fin Hotel. It was quiet. Service was pretty quick. Food was pretty good. Came here on a Saturday around 3:50pm- was happily surprised they still have happy hour on the weekends but it ends at 4pm! The server was nice and gave us the heads up to put in our orders asap to get the deal. We ordered the crispy dumplings, the kalua pork fries, and the switchboard burger. I went by Yelp reviews and a bit nervous about picking a restaurant I never heard of without a recommendation. We swung by here sometime in February on our way from LA to SD. Kiddo was getting hangry and couldn't wait to get to SD to eat. Interesting spot, small and located inside a hotel. There's only a couple tables in the restaurant but they were open to seating us in the hotel lobby, which worked out better for kiddo to sit and eat. We ended up ordering Kalua Pork Fries, Hawaiian Plate with bulgogi. Everything was tasty! The bulgogi was a little salty and the fries were fried crispy well. However, let's talk about the macaroni salad-this was not your traditional Mac salad except that it was cold. It was basically cheese Mac w/curdled cheese and no flavor. The concept of the Switchboard is super cool, with the interior completely decked out with switchboard-like decorations. The service here was good and our server was super nice and gave us a rundown of the specials they had for that day. Unfortunately, I wasn't really impressed with the food. We ordered the edamame, which was $8 for a tiny portion. And I didn't really love the sauce and salt it was covered in. We also tried the Salmon Tartare, and again, I wasn't a fan. I was excited to try Switchboard as it had such solid reviews. Unfortunately our experience was not the best and the issues pretty strange. Firstly, the service was quite unusual. Our server left several times in the middle of taking our order. Such a strange approach and she did it seemingly randomly. One person would order, then she'd leave for a few minutes or so and come back with not explanation. She also forgot drinks as a result, very strange approach to waiting on a table. The food was also not great. The spam musubi was extremely dry. Our burger and chicken sandwiches tasted like Salmon (I guess they were grilled on a spot that had recently had Salmom grilled on it)? I love Hawaiian food so expectations were already up going into this place and thank goodness The Switchboard didn't disappoint. The Teriyaki Chicken was very juicy, the sauce wasn't overly sweet and paired with the fried rice, it was very enjoyable. The Korean Loco Moco was quite the hearty dish that will leave your tastebuds with a warm pleasantry with every bite. The gochujang gravy is a nice twist and adds a subtle spice to the dish. This dish is more on the savory side but not overly savory where you're searching for water after every other bite. As for the fries, perfectly crisp and the spicy seasoning works very well with all the dipping sauces they provided. It's smaller than I expected and connected to a coffee shop and hotel lobby, but I was able to grab a table and get settled in for a bit. I started with a drink and after some consultation, decided on the burger with fries. I was spending the day in the downtown Oceanside area and we decided to grab some lunch after going to a movie. After looking up places on Yelp I bookmarked The Switchboard since I was interested in eating some Hawaiian fare, just recently returning from the islands. Cute place attached to a hotel and coffee shop. Our server was friendly and attentive. The restaurant itself is cute but pretty small so they must seat people in the lobby area of the hotel during peak hours. Our table ordered the Hawaiian plate lunch meals with different proteins. Together we ordered the Kalua pork, the tofu and the bulgogi beef. The plates came with fried rice, mac salad and our selected protein. My bulgogi was very tasty although the portion sizes for the proteins were much smaller than what you get on the islands for the price. My daughter's tofu didn't have much seasoning on it and we all thought of many ways it could have been better prepared to give it more flavor. When the bill came they charged us an up charge for the fried rice when we did not request it or even given an option. I would have said something if I knew about this but I didn't find out about it until after we left the restaurant. My daughter treated us to lunch and unfortunately didn't say anything. All you need is a good story sometimes! I was impressed reading about local Marine vet Kevin Shin and his plans for a city block of goodness. His businesses rank high on my list of favorite places in our foodie City of Oceanside. A hotel, coffee shop, art gallery restaurant (all reviewed individually). My first visit to one of his establishments was here at The Switchboard, a Hawaiian inspired restaurant. We have visited for lunch and dinner and were welcomed with the dogs. The lunch was bold, but breakfast even bolder with fabulous offerings made with SPAM to the best chicken and waffles I have ever eaten The drinks are tropical and pair with the food. Today it was very busy. Switchboard has very few tables within the restaurant itself. There is seating within the cafe, in the restaurant, and in the hotel lobby. There is a bar and bar seating right as you enter. We were attended to immediately at the start. Initially, we got a seat at the cafe, but after that, we moved to the main restaurant once someone left. We ordered our drinks - greygoose cranberry for the hubby and a cappuccino for me. Hubby's came pretty quickly within 10 minutes. Mine took way longer. Trying to look for someone to let them know that my drink hasn't come was very trying. Each time someone walked past, my hubby tried to wave then down but was ignored. By the time we finally got the attention of someone, my cappuccino finally came. That said, cappuccino was pretty good. Strong coffee and delicious. Hubby's greygoose cranberry was weak for the first drink and over strong for the second drink. It was inconsistent. I ordered spicy pork kogi Hawaiian plate. And my hubby had bulgogi beef Hawaiian plate. My spicy pork kogi had very little pork. It had like 4 pieces of pork total. It was seasoned well but it was overcooked and dry. It came with Mac salad and I thought that was just ok. My hubby's beef bulgogi was just ok. The way it was seasoned- it had a very strong taste of ginger. It was overpowering for him. It was ok for me. Beef was cooked better than the pork it was juicy. He added eggs over easy and those were good. I also had an espresso martini. And that was really good. Coffee and alcohol was a good balance. When we tried to pay, it took awhile to try and wave someone down as well. Overall, it had very slow service. Food was not fantastic but has potential. Would I come back? We made a reservation for Mother's Day dinner and mentioned it upon arrival. A polite gentleman asked us to wait while he checked. Shortly after, another staff member approached us with a noticeably rude attitude. He said they didn't have a table but could seat us in the "lounge," which is the hotel lobby facing the front desk . I politely reminded him we had a reservation, to which he replied, "Yeah, everyone else here did too," while motioning to the other diners. He then walked away toward the bar without making eye contact or offering an apology. He resumed making drinks and made no effort to accommodate us. We've been exploring this side of Oceanside more and more and had a weekend afternoon of walking around and dropping in on bars for a drink and a bite to eat. This was our last stop of the afternoon and I was glad we finally made it here. I saw this place on Yelp and then we have passed by it many times making our way around other restaurants in the area. The place is cute inside and we were greeted immediately and sat down at the bar. I ordered a white tiger and my husband ordered a dirty dolphin (espresso martini). We loved both of these drinks. Then we decided to get some food: the banchan pickled vegetables (our favs were the pickled garlic and kimchi), spam musubi (amazing since I've only ever had this dish cold I thought I didn't like it but damn was it good) and the Kalua pork fries. All the food was so good. We finished off the afternoon with another round of drinks- I asked for something fruity with vodka and got a pineapple passion fruit mix from a previous cocktail menu- amazing. I loved it! I love that it's veteran owned and that it is in a historic building that during World War II was commandeered as a communication center in support of the war effort. Food tasted under-seasoned. I had the fried chicken and French toast. The gravy for the chicken I had on the side and I added a got amount of salt and pepper to have it taste decent. The chicken was rubbery. It had that taste like it was pre-frozen then cooked quickly. I didn't finish my food. read more

This is a good breakfast place. I liked the Korean Loco Moco, though the meat wasn't well seasoned. But the presentation was on point. I got seated quickly at the bar in this tiny restaurant. The bartender was nice enough. I'm not sure if the Korean flavors were really present, but it looked fine. read more
