Not appetizing food wasn't all that great and neither was the service. I don't recommend this place.

They sell excellent tasting sub sandwiches, albeit more pricey (over $8 or more) than Subway or Jersey Mike's because of the higher quality ingredients used. My favorite cold sub sandwich to get here is their ham or turkey. The cold subs have a good dosage of sauce and they add vinegar with salt 'n pepper as the final touch! Also, they include a few pepperoncinis and carrot sticks with every sandwich. It's located in UCR's Bannockburn apartment complex (across from the softball field and adjacent to the Alumni Visitor Center) and has an ample amount of seating both inside and outside. read more

Consistently good. Excellent taste, the prices have climbed over the years, but the freshness, flavor and variety can not be beat. My familY loves the big dude and it satisfies with all its meaty goodness, but when I'm in a lighter mood, I order the avocado (no cheese) with a couple sides of vinegar and all is right with the world. I have been coming here since childhood and it is good to see it is still delicious and the owner is always friendly when he is there. read more

My mother started bringing me here as early as I can remember. I have been eating here since I was 3 or 4 years old since I lived right up the street. Now I bring in my kids and it has become their favorite sandwich shop. Sub Station uses high quality ingredients and have consistently done so. The sandwiches come in small or large (half or whole). You can add chips, pickle and a drink with your sandwich. Inside and outside seating allows many seating options. If you choose to sit outside you will have a view of the UC Riverside softball field. If you are ever in the UCR area, make sure to bring your family to Sub Station, they will thank me!! read more

Essential, venerable and home of 'The Big Dude' for forty-five years is an impressive feat of sandwichery! If it's $10.99 today for the full size cut into quarters, I wonder what it cost at its inception in 1972 dollars? (An enterprising fellow Elite just told me that would cost $1.88 back then). Substation is one of only a few restaurants on or near enough to be intregal with the UC Riverside campus. I was first introduced by a friend who attended years ago and was impressed. However, the biggest limiter always and always will be eligible parking without fear of being ticketed or towed. Nevertheless, if you happen to land one of those coveted spots (read the damn signs), you can count your blessings and ducats dedicated for an amazing sub experience. Cold sandwiches dominate the menu but now I'm curious to move into a warm type (hopefully grilled, not nuked like other places). Consider the signature or any other full-sized sub for $10.99 and think how much sandwich you get at, say, Jersey Mike's. Not much, right? The "regular size", so this is a great value in an age of escalating food costs. Plus, there's the added benefit of supporting an established private enterprise over corporate taste and lack of personality. IMHO the Big Dude is loaded with ham, cheese, cappacolla, salami, pepperoni, lettuce and tomato. There's a tangy vinaigrette and pepper too. I recall liking the turkey subs in the past and daily specials augment the usual choices. I had mine with chips and bottled water. While full, the quality of the ingredients let my sensitive insides know that I consumed quality materials without preservatives and other nasty things. If you're a student or pretend to be one for a day, check out this hidden gem in Riverside's corner pocket. read more

It's been 20 years since I graduated from UCR. Yet, I still drive te 10 miles past several other chain sandwich places, anytime I have an urge for a sandwich. And I try to go every year on February 16th for their anniversary party ! It's always a good time and it reminds me of the good old College days. I'm giving this place a negative review simply because of HORRIBLE customer service. My wife and I were deciding on catering and this place was recommended. We decided to order from them with a pick up date they happen to be closed. However, the "owner" said he would come in and complete the order just for us so we were happy about that. wife ordered 3 long subs and 2 veges trays for son's birthday party about a week before event. did not have to prepay nor deposit. Showed up the day of and all's ready. helpful and friendly staff helped to load them all up into my sedan. juice bottles provided separately so the subs stay dry until serving; great idea. the sub... @ the party, great tasting and again ordered way too much. guests were happy to take some home to enjoy and we were left some subs also. got them back and after 3 days, we were still having them. The Subs are MASSIVE!! Food (3/5 stars): The 10 inch sub is so big! I split it into 2 meals. I like how they cut the Sandwich into 4 pieces so you can eat each section without everything falling out. I tried their sandwich with Dry Salami and Cotta Salami (not on the menu bc I customized it). The taste was good but nothing too special. They put so much lettuce in it and not too much meat! But it very simple and you won't get sick of it too quickly. I would come back but not too often. Finally got to try this UCR hot spot...I got the steak and cheese sandwich. It's a hot sandwich so it takes time to come out but it's well worth it. Each sandwich comes with a modest portion of carrots and peppers. They pair SO PERFECTLY well with the sandwich that I believed I uttered some French phrases when I first had them all in my mouth. I wish they gave a little bit more but I'm not complaining. Nothing more to add to the review but the prices are a bit steep. I got the smaller size and it was almost $10. Surprised that it's such a hit with poor college students but guess taste trumps all. read more

The best of this style of sub. Just about perfect. I usually get turkey with provolone, avocado lettuce and tomato. Sometimes I hold the turkey and do double provolone. Comes with little hot peppers which are excellent between bites of sub to cool them off. It is on the edge of the University. Been here for decades. read more

Time and time again, my stay here at UCR has always been filled with "hmm, I feel like eating out today but idk what." Usually whenever that happens, I'll want to go super local and since this is the most convenient spot for me, I do come here every so often and I never regret my decision. Food: The sandwiches here are super bomb. They're known for their "Big Dude" which is a cold cut sandwich with cheese, meats, pepper, tomato, lettuce, and I think vinegar dressing? Not sure. I just know that all the sandwiches here are super worth the price. Service: The restaurant is family-owned, and being right next to UCR, it's safe to assume that they employees are all college students. They're always really friendly and helpful and serve with a smile. Overall, I do very much enjoy this sandwich place. To find out that the food is just as incredible as the business motto...i was thrilled. Why has no one told me about this spot on UCR? I've been tortured with stale and horribly boring sandwiches from Subway thinking that was my only option. From now on, goodbye mediocre and hello delicious! I opted for their '12" Hot Pastrami Sandwich with cheese. You can choose from their 6" or "12 hot or cold cut sandwich. The sub was incredible and the hefty portion of pastrami with the beautiful composition of fresh veggies was a delight. They have both indoor and outdoor (shaded) seating and your UCR Wi-Fi will reach over there if you're like me (stuffing your mouth and brain with homework). Wow! Humongous sandwich! I tried the turkey avocado, and it was huge and hefty. The ingredients tagged fresh, especially the loaded guac! It was very well priced too. I like how they have a wide selection, and it feels more like a local, hip joint and not just another franchise. Been coming here since 1976. Still the best in Riverside! Large Hot Pastrami (#14) is my go-to! They close at 3 pm and on Sundays which makes it difficult to enjoy as often as I'd like! Talk about bad customer service I was at the counter ordering and the guy told me to wait picked up the phone and took 4 orders and I was in mid order for my food. Left me at the counter for over 10 minutes just standing there. Food was not good at all bread taste old and meat was thin and not a lot the sandwich was a mess and they got the order wrong. Save your self on the overpriced not good sandwich and get something else that does not cost you 19.23 for a sub drink and chips. Love their subs. Each sandwich is made with a lot of lettuce and with pickled peppers and carrots on the side. This business has been here for a very long time and is very much student supported. I really like the simplicity of their menu and the easy taste of their ingredients. I say easy because there really isn't any complexity to their subs. Additionally, there are many different subs to choose from. My favorites would be the club and anything with salami in it. Their cheeses are all the same and there really aren't that many choices for vegetables or cheese. This place isn't a subway, but if you compare their sizes than Subway would be a better deal. Additionally, there is a vegetarian section which is good for people who are looking for a vegetarian option while still being able to eat something that is good quality. I would recommend this place to someone who is in a hurry and would want to get something fulfilling really quickly. I prefer going to subway instead, but still the fact that there are a lot of students employed, the atmosphere, and the quick and easy menu is what still brings me back to The Sub Station. read more

Her favorite sandwich from this awesome place is the marinated cucumber with avocado added with the juice on the side (the juice being oil and vinegar).
