Been coming here since 1976. Still the best in Riverside! Large Hot Pastrami (#14) is my go-to! They close at 3 pm and on Sundays which makes it difficult to enjoy as often as I'd like! Extremely disappointed with the service today. I waited 30 minutes (in 100 degree weather) for a two sandwich order, only to learn that the order was lost. This error caused myself and another party to miss lunch entirely before returning to work. Notably, the restaurant was not busy. I called and spoke with the manager to voice my complaint, as I have been a loyal and local customer for years, only to hear various trifling attributions. It is my belief the manager hung up on my call, as I did not finish voicing my concerns. I'm hoping this feedback is used to support improvement in customer service and management for a staple restaurant in the riverside community. read more

Unlike some of the local eating institutions of this area, Sub Station has never dipped in quality or service. It is the same since I was a kid, teenager, young adult and now. Okay I have mixed feelings about this place. I got a vegetarian avocado and cheese sub on my first day at UCR and it was pretty good. I would have been happier if it didn't give me food poisoning. Great place for sandwiches I tried the number 11 as well as the big dude and thought they were both amazing. There was a great amount of flavor and the sauces really complimented the subs very well. Staff is extremely friendly and there certainly is a very nice atmosphere for the place. As a college student it is on the pricier side of things but it is definitely worth it. I hate to write this review because I've been a loyal customer of sub station for years now. I sent my younger sister to pick up sandwiches for everyone at home and as she walked up a homeless man asked if she could purchase some food for her. As any decent person would do, she chose to help this man and purchase something for him to eat. Unfortunately the owner of substation would not have this! He repeatedly berated my sister and made some pretty horrible remarks telling her "to leave those kind of actions for the church." and "You can't feed them." That it's, "kind of like when you go to the park and you see the signs that say don't feed the birds. Because once you feed one of them they go back and tell their friends and next thing you know you have 30 homeless people asking my customers for food." he also told the homeless guy "I'm not making that sandwich for you, I'm giving her her money back." He then continued to tell her that he couldn't have the homeless man harassing his customers all the while harassing my 17 year old sister who is after all a customer. Needless to say the owner left her shaken up and that is no way to treat a young customer or someone who is hungry! I can no longer see myself supporting this establishment. Richard M. Ordered lunch online...time to prep was 15 minutes. We got there within 25 minutes but still had to wait an additional 10 before the order was ready. No reason given by the staff. The food itself was delicious: we had the Big Dude, BBQ chicken sub and 1/2 steak and cheese. Everything was well seasoned and had their own personality. Worked here 21 years ago and came by this way after so many years and stopped in for the most delicious subs with my family. Richard remembered me from way back when and was a delight to see. He taught me so much about work ethic and customer service as a young woman. Now as a middle aged woman I got to see the tradition carries on and he's still producing delicious sandwiches with a smile. The 7in. subs are still super filling and almost impossible to finish. I was visiting UC Riverside, I did not like the campus at all whatsoever. Just didn't like the area and it was sort of depressing for me at the time, after that long drive and the campus wasn't even nice. I was starving so I decided to give this place a try, it honestly was the best decision of that entire trip. First the atmosphere of this place is so amazing, they were playing Abbey Road in the back with The Beatles posters everywhere in the restaurant. My favorite album and band of all time it's like they knew I was having a bad day and was trying to save it. After sitting down listening to "She came in through the bathroom window" I got my delicious pastrami sandwich that I ordered. It was mouth watering and just so delicious. They have different options for both meat lovers and vegetarians alike. The portions are perfect and the flavors just hit the spot. Each sandwich is also accompanied by a delicious side of crunchy carrots and sweet peppers. My go to is the Veggie Avocado and Cheese sub. I'm a huge fan of Avocado on all my sandwhiches, and the one they offer here is exactly what my cravings need. There is much history to be seen all around the walls in their photographs. This is where the commuter students from the Inland Empire fresh out of RCC who attend UCR, that University of California Lite that collects all the smog that blows inland from UCLA, stuff their faces with a mouthful of delight. The decor is a bit of a turn off, however, being hard wood tables and little bench stools that looked like they came form Woodworking class at the local John North High School, "home of the Huskies". It's difficult to enjoy when your rear end is sitting on that hard wood too long. But the special salads are tasty with a sweet, tossed, creamy mixture. And those foot longs are huge, so much so that they are served in a wax paper hammock and held in the middle by one hand, so it dangles precariously but securely so none of those big mouthfuls spills out before it gets into your pie hole. I must say this place is WAAAAY better than the Subway that is down the street. It's tucked away in the plaza right across the UCR campus. This place has been here forever, and you can tell by the super old pictures of the different staff that use to work here. The staff are really nice and friendly, and patient with my indecisive self. There is a pretty good amount of different subs/sandwiches here to choose from. I normally get the Big Dude or the Pizza-wich. The Big Dude is a big sub that has some various kinds of Italian meat inside of it, so if you're in the mood for a cold sandwich, get that one. If you're in the mood for a hot sandwich get the Pizza-wich! It's basically a pizza on some french buns. The Sub Station is a very unique but very familiar type sandwich shop. I have only been to this shop a handful of times but I can't say enough good things about them. The shop is no frills but huge on taste. I am creature of habit so most of the time I get the Turkey and Provolone (Lettuce, Tomato, Oil and Vinegar and Pepper the Sandwich is Basic with the exception of this peculiar sauce they use, has everything texture of cream cheese but a slight taste of Mayo. It's probably something very simple but whatever it is It's Good!! I always get a deli dill pickle which is sliced into quarters and adds Eve perfect tang to the Sandwich. Sandwiches are good, but the vegetarian options suck hardcore. Just because there's no meat on the sandwich doesn't mean it should be lame. I got the avocado and cheese sandwich hot, which I was excited to try. Definitely sucked because the Italian dressing soaked my bread, the avocado and toppings were mushy so the entire sandwich just was "one note" as my roomie put it. At least at Subway I can put on as much veggies as I want. I had to buy a bag of chips to stick in my sandwich to finish eating it. So. If you're a meat eater, definitely give this place a shot and you'll probably love it(minus the price). I always go for "The Big Dude," which has ham and the Italian meats, cheese, lettuce, and their special vinegar dressing which is what gets me coming back on a French roll.
