I've been meaning to try this place for a long time. Ordered the vegan sub and it had plenty of cheese and toppings, but the bread was kind of stale and not very appetizing. There are a lot of customers coming in and out so I know this place has been around a long time and has good food. I might've just had bad luck. I've been a student at UCR for a while now and this was the first time ever at the Sub Station. This definitely has to be something you try before you graduate. They really know how to make a good sandwich experience. I decided to do the sub special and would recommend. You get a side, drink, and sub for $12! Great deal. I loved the meat to veggie ratio and I loved the side of banana pepper and carrots. It definitely elevated the experience. I really liked the potato salad as well. The service was great! The worker really went over the first menu with us, telling us what was recommended, and that was all great but when we received the sandwich, there was hardly any meat in it. First off I would like to say that I've been coming to Sub Station for years, and the food and service is always great. I haven't been there for a while and I was craving it. I ordered my usual, a small big dude. For my wife I ordered a tuna on wheat. The tuna made my wife sick and the big dude sub had one slice of each meat. The service was just ok. Definitely not the same caliber of students that have previously worked there. I will definitely come back due to the fact that I am a loyal customer and I've always had great food and service there. The only con about this place is the service. I have been going here since I was in college at UCR. The sandwiches are always good. However, the workers can either be courteous of juvenile. Ok I have to say the service was good. Honestly, we didn't know this sandwich shop was here. The reason I came across to the business is by IG feeds yup and that's when I told my husband let's go check it out. So we did today Sunday Jan 26 2025. We got there around 10am or so. We walk it and we were greeted with is a plus always. Since it was our first time we mention that and the guy behind the counter right away gave us some good options about sandwiches. My husband and I agree to get " The Big Dude" 12 inch. We were very pleased. Flavor is there, fresh and tasty. The ambiance is a good welcoming and the space is good. Seating is great. Now some suggestions maybe have some upgrades in the kitchen ordering area. That will pump I think a better feeling. The seating area is clean. They have outside seating. The Sub Station is a Riverside classic, walk inside and you'll find swag alongside sandwiches. It's right by UCR and usually pretty busy but don't work there is plenty of seating indoors and on the patio. The subs here are pretty big, I usually have leftovers if I order the medium size and the large could easily feed two people. I love ordering the hot pastrami with cheese and my husband loves the big dude which comes with all the meat and all the fixings. They also offer vegetarian options. Stopped in a few days ago with my husband for a sandwich, it's been years since I worked two doors down at Dan Martin & Friends. This was our go to for lunch at least once a week and my favorite was the Kinsmen so I ordered it and the young man had no idea what I was talking about! I laughed and said that's okay so I ordered a turkey & cheese with avocado and my husband got the steak and cheese. As we waited for our food I ran into Richard and we talked for awhile about the old days when I worked at the Salon, then I told him that when I was working downtown Riverside we would have our lunches catered by Sub Station and everyone just loved the fresh bread and ingredients in the sandwiches. I have lived in Riverside for many years and I have eaten here many times but hadn't in a while. Overall my goal was just to grab a quick sandwich for lunch and I think my goal was met. Food: I got the turkey, cheese, and avocado sub. The guy that took my order seemed a bit rushed and didn't hear me when I asked if there was wheat bread available. When I asked if I could have bacon in it he said it was not available. I was a bit disappointed because I was kind of craving a turkey bacon avocado sandwich. I accepted the sandwich as it was prepared and paid for my order. I got some extra yellow peppers to go and I took my order home. The sandwich was not as good as I remembered. The bread was a bit stale and the avocado seemed more like guacamole. There was very little turkey and mostly lettuce. It came with two little sticks of dry carrots. I needed to put salt in it to give it more flavor. Overall, I was sad the food was not as good as I remembered it. Service: The cashier seemed rushed because it was peak lunch time. The steak & cheese is another highly recommend. If you prefer lighter meat options then go with the turkey avocado. It gets a little messy but it's amazing. Not only the best subs in Riverside, but literally the best subs I've ever had. Quality and delicious flavor remains unchanged the last 33 years I've been coming here. Every sub I've had there is delicious. Today I had my original favorite turkey and provolone. I always order a whole so I can share or have leftovers. I haven't measured but I think it's well over 12" with plenty of turkey and the most delicious dressing. It was $14 and a bargain at that. Generously feeds two, feeds four for any non-gluttons out there just wish they stayed open until at least 5 instead of closing at 3. Worth planning ahead though. read more

We first started going to the SubStation when my mom was in college in the early to mid 70's and we lived down the street a few houses down from D'Elias, but hated going there. What can I say. This place is a staple and legendary for the city of Riverside and def for the UCR community. Sandwiches are awesome, I love getting the Big Dude. Service is great and polite, they mainly employ college students and what seems like high school students so not always the most attentive (usually don't get customizations correct, ie add extra mayo, add avocado, etc). I have been coming to this place since as long as I can remember. Hands down the best submarine sandwiches I have ever had. There are lots of sandwiches to choose from, or you can create your own. They have this special Italian oil/dressing they use that is amazing! If you can't decide what to order, the staff is great at helping with suggestions. Parking is right in front of the restaurant, they require all customers and staff to wear masks and they are currently doing outdoor dining due to the COVID restrictions.
