OK, I know this is just a dive bar. And I've been here before and it's been what you'd expect. The food is kind of like a diner would have... Which doesn't mean that it's bad. I've had some decent burgers and some palatable fish and chips here. Today however was a different story. It was around 4 PM when I arrived. I hadn't eaten lunch so I was really hungry. I sat down and the female bartender came and took my order of a Seapine IPA and a bacon cheeseburger with fries. The place was "lightly" occupied. There were a number of people seated at the bar and some guys playing pool, but it was a very chill atmosphere. I didn't see anybody eating, just drinking. For some reason that I can't fathom, and certainly not due to any kind of rush or busyness, my food took a really long time to get to me. The kitchen wasn't cooking for anybody else so I don't know how that happened. I heard the bell ring indicating an order was ready, which I assumed was mine, and looked forward to my meal arriving, but my server didn't show up until at least five minutes later, after a second bell. And, horror of horrors, though no surprise, my food was cold. The french fries looked like they had been cooked over and over again and they were cold. The burger was cold. The place wasn't busy, no other food was coming out of the kitchen, why was my food cold? I wish I were the type of person who would say, nicely of course, it's cold please get me a fresh one or whatever, but I'm not. I'm glad sites such as yelp exist where you can talk about your experiences without a big confrontation. The bartender, my server was a very nice lady. She was super sweet and friendly and I liked her personally. I don't know if she went AWOL when my burger was first ready though, but she definitely let me down with the cold meal! 11/14/2019 I revisited The Sloop with some friends, despite my unfortunate experience the prior visit. Although the place was popping, we were happy with the service. I decided to take a chance and order the fish and chips (I chose waffle Fries). Everything came out hot and delicious! Hooray for dive bars! Theres no way you can not like The Sloop Tavern. It's not the biggest bar, but they make best of their space. And of course you can't forget the famous sloopersize beers! I've been here quite a few times, its usually at the very beginning of a long night stumbling around Ballard. They have two pool tables, one dart board (that breaks sometimes in the middle of a game), golden tee and my favorite...big buck! At first I thought, "How could I not have reviewed the Sloop?" and then I realized that the Sloop is just that-- forgettable. No full bar here, fellow lushes. Just a questionable selection of wine and some beers. I am not a beer drinker, so I will not comment on that selection, but WOW. If all you are going to sell is beer and wine, you should probably stock a little more than Sutter Home and Chateu St Michele or whatever other crappy stuff I was forced to swill here. They do have a lot of pool tables, which is cool, some video games, and a very laid back vibe. If there is one thing in the world that I love, it is a good dive bar. As I was cruising in Ballard my eye was instantly attracted to this little joint. My small little group agreed we should hit up this spot after lunch. If I could box this bar up and take it with me, I would!! I loved this place! My friend told me we had to get the "Slooper." Giant "Sloopersized" mugs of beer for $4-7?? I'm getting thirsty writing this review! The Sloop is a great casual bar, slightly off the beaten path in Ballard. Although that just makes it easier to find parking. But I'd suggest leaving the car at home all together since driving anywhere after you get your hands on a few Sloopersized beers is not advised! On top of the great beer prices, the place actually has pretty good food as well. I recommend their burgers, quite good. They've also got a decent number of TVs for catching a game, darts, buck hunter, and pool tables. My one complaint would be that service can be spotty... ranging from great to you'd need a flare gun to get any attention. Obviously, this is usually a product of how busy it is at the time since they usually only have one or two people working. Also... don't go in expecting to get a margarita or a martini, the Sloop is a tavern, meaning BEER. And that's just fine with me. read more

Sloop it up to experience, but in my "elite member" opinion, this place has gone a little down hill- just slightly, people. I still love it.. but I liked the old crowd better- the longshoreman, the sailors.. the LIES! In the last few years, it's become a refuge for white hats- the frat crowd. It's not too terrible, but it becomes that way on weekend nights. Big Buck Hunter, a decent Juke, and pool.. pretty great for crowds- you can usually find a table. Stick to the weeknights and the uber cheap 32oz beers for $6 (microbrews- $4 for the cheap 'uns). I haven't eaten here- and I never will. If you've ever been in, you'll see why. I'm a fan of a good dive bar, but would say this one is just alright. The service was pleasant but slow. For example, when we came in and sat down, it took awhile for her to come over to our table for the first time. The food was priced great. The food itself tasted good, but wasn't food that would bring me back. We got the fish and chips as well as the nachos. Fish and chips was mostly good, one of the fish pieces was soggy, not crunchy and the tartar sauce was not very good. I like that they use wild cod, and the ones that were crunchy were good. The nachos were pretty good, and were not skimpy on the toppings. My complaint with the nachos is that I wish they had house-made parts like guac and salsa, otherwise they're something I could easily throw together at home. Was fine that we went, but I probably wouldn't be back since the food was pretty basic. read more

Absolutely amazing service here. I'm not sure of the male bartenders name but he was a white guy, very accommodating. The drinks are good and they've got a good selection too. I have decided the Sloop is my new lover. I am so enarmored I don't care how he'll treat me as long as I can bask in his glory. Service is slow, the food dirt cheap, greasy, and bad for you, and best of all drinks the size of your head. Its filled with young folks and old grumpy regulars. The booths are not attached to the floor so after a few of those "Sloopersized" beers your ass will be on the ground. There are two pool tables and video games. The Sloop looks like its been around for a while. This is a bar you respect because of all its encountered. Take your pretentiousness and holier than thou attitude somewhere else because it is not tolerated here. There is a small yard attached where homeless men like to hang out. On my way in I heard one chastise the other because he got one beer rather than a six pack that had been requested. I love you, Sloop. read more

Getting my ass kicked at pool is more fun at The Sloop. I swear, if my Lady never scratched on the break, I would never win a game. She's not that great at the game either, just better than me. But we really love to play and find ourselves more often than not at The Sloop. The bartenders are cool. They usually bring us our NA beers at the pool table without having to stop at the bar to order. The place is usually half full on weeknights, mainly with the older male variety of human. Weekends are a different story. I stay away. One night we were hungry, tried a burger, and were pleasantly surprised. Nothing fancy, but very good. We eat there more often now. One night as we approached the front door, there was an older man standing outside: white hair and beard, yellow rain slicker, boots, pipe in his mouth. I thought he was a statue. He was the perfect Ballard fisherman right off the packaging for frozen lemon cod fillets or something. So you may get something like that if you stop in. read more

I'm sincerely surprised "sloopersized" isn't on Wikipedia yet, as it's a phenomenon that I link to all beers served in mugs 32 ounces or larger (regardless of the location of where I drink said gigantic beer). The food is pretty decent and not too spendy, and the beers won't set you back too much either. A couple of pool tables and variety of video games will keep the ADD kids in your group occupied, and there is always a game on one (or all) of the tvs. To quote my guy friends "the bigger the beer . . . the bigger the good time, " and I can't say I disagree as I've never had a bad time at The Sloop. read more

When someone calls a place a "dive," I just want to yell, "Hey Buddy! What?! Do you think you're Donald Fuckin' Trump or something??!" I mean, really, if its too "divey" then what are you doing there in the first place? Okay, that's my little rant. Anyway, the Sloop is an awesome dive in downtown Ballard (and I say dive with affection). They serve multiple sizes of beer, including the schooner (really, what's the point), the pint, and the super-sized litre (I think it's actually a 32-ouncer). It's kind of an eclectic crowd, with migrant workers brushing up against working-class Ballard folks and the stray group of obnoxious frat people. Last time I went the 32-ounce Raineer was pricing at $4, I think, which is a pretty good deal. One word of advice. After multiple 32-ouncers it's not really a good idea to switch to cider from Raineer. My "friend" got too drunk and deserted me at the Sloop once. I had a full Raineer in front of me, and he left me with a full cider. With friends like that, who needs friends? As far as food, the Sloop makes surprisingly good fish and chips, and on St. Patty's I had some excellent corned beef and cabbage. They're usually pretty understaffed, so you just have to be patient and wait your turn. Once after the Syttende Mai (17th of May) parade in Ballard I went to the Sloop and there was a huge group of clowns that came walking in after the parade. They all started ordering shots of whiskey and trying to pick up middle-aged women. It was amusing. Odd that a place called The Sloop, with a case full of sailing medals, has staff that doesn't seem to like sailors. On the other hand, I'm not sure that the feller serving us liked anyone really. One of the folks in my party: "Hey, just double checking that we're getting the seasoned fries?" Server: "Yeah, unless he's dropped them [in the oil] already." Zoiks! I feel like we picked up a Saint Louis south city dive bar and brought it on vacation to Seattle with us. When we walked in the door, we both got a whiff of smoke and looked at each other in surprise. A green, trendy, coastal city like Seattle surely must have outlawed smoking in food pubs long before St. Louis! Come to find out there is no smoking, but the carpet and place in general is just old and just a little funky. That fades about halfway through your first beer, so no worries. The place was hopping when we arrived, and we grabbed one of the few open tables. The waitress, a no-nonsense but friendly type of barmaid, warned that service might be spotty due to the crowds and we might have to go to the bar for additional beer. Fine with us, but it never happened as it did lighten up a little while we were there. Beer= cheap Rainier lager on tap in frosty mugs= delicious and keep 'em coming. Food was burgers and fries, again just like a south city joint. Big, but not overbearing. Greasy, but awesome. Traditional toppings only, and everything comes in one of those plastic baskets with the paper lining. Love it! There are pool tables, darts, and other games. The crowd is young, urban hipster mixed with a few sailors still there from getting off their boats in the afternoon as this spot is in Ballard right by the locks and port. The Mariners were on TV and the music was classic rock. This is a basic beer and wine only kind of place, no full bar. I really got a kick out of the fact that they have Almaden wines on their list. I haven't heard about Almaden wines in about 25 years, so it took me back. Ah, the days of bad wine: Riunite, Blue Nun, Paul, Masson, Ernest & Julio Gallo. Good times. read more

Conveniently located between hipster downtown and the Ballard liquor store next door, the Sloop is kind of a combination of that -- divey, cheap alcohol with folks in overalls, except here the folks in overalls are authentically fishermen. Don't expect too much in terms of decor (think: darts [though plastic], pool tables, Big Game Hunter, lots of yacht trophies with great names on the wall, pull tabs behind the bar), but expect a lot in terms of beer sizes. Slooper-sized beers are large and cheap, clientele is interesting to look at if a little scary to talk to, but everyone is nice and drunk, so nothing to really be afraid of. The Sloop is all about bang for the buck to me: 33.8 oz frosty mugs of microbrew for under $6, excellent 3pc fish & chips for about $8, and 50 cent pool tables. That's about as good as pub value gets. If you need still more buck-bang, they also have Big Buck Hunter. I don't usually pay much attention to the crowd (which may say something about the crowd), but one night my roommate and I ran into a couple of decent-looking cougars there. One of the reasons why I love this place is for its convenient location, since I live a stone's throw away. Sadly, I can't seem to scale over the barbed wire fence separating their back yard from mine, so I have to walk *all the way around the block* in order to order me up a sloopersize mug of beer. Don't forget your ID. Even if you fancy yourself a regular, those sometimes loveable and always curmudgeonly bartenders can't distinguish you from the throngs of other pretend-blue-collar-hipsters, and won't think twice before kicking you out for not bringing proper identification (or for looking at them the wrong way). So be nice and polite to your bartenders. Even if they might lack any patience with you and won't begrudge you the merest hint of a smile (isn't that part of the Sloop's charm?) ... The more sloopersize mugs of beer you have, the less you'll care that the bartender isn't showing you any love. Go cry in your beer, hipster! Your big, beautiful beer. Jabs at the ever increasing number of non-blue collar patrons aside, yes, it does seem less of a true fisherman's bar than it used to be. But we were here a few weeks ago after a regatta of some sort, and by the end of the evening, the bar was packed with nautical ruffians of all kinds - and it was awesome and authentic (if you ignored us pansy-a&% pretenders in the corner). The food is greasy goodness. Well, it's honestly nothing to write home about - just standard dive bar fare, with moderately okay fish and chips, nachos and burgers ... but after one (or two, or three) of the aforementioned mugs of beer, everything will taste delicious. Woe that I rarely seem to catch the kitchen before it closes. I could be wrong, but I think on summer weeknights, the kitchen closes by ten (no ifs ands or buts about it, and begging and pleading with the bartender doesn't help either - and crying just makes them laugh at you). I've had my share of good times here. I've enjoyed some $4 sloopersized beers. I've enjoyed a LOT of the $6 sloopersized beers. I like the BLT and chicken strips. But sometimes it takes a public confrontation with a drunk geriatric stranger to remind you that while we all love dive bars because of the cheap drinks and thinly-veiled potential for shenanigans, it's not as cool when it actually happens. I've been an irregular visitor of The Sloop since I started racing sailboats out of Shilshole Marina in the mid 70's. It was the perfect spot to spend the last night with bandmates before I got married in 1990. And now that I have moved to the Kitsap Peninsula in 2015, I try to make it a point to visit The Sloop whenever I visit friends in the city. I came here for one thing...to start an old fashioned bar fight in a ancient fisherman's drinking cove, and once I realized everyone was nice, I opted for the other mythical item served at this location, the double cheeseburger with seasoned fries. First off, I couldn't believe the quality of presentation on this burger. It looked like an advertising photo! Let me start off by saying that I don't even really drink beer. I'm the kind of gal who usually prefers getting dolled up and sipping on a lemondrop while chatting to my girlfriends. If the bar's swanky and hip, I'm there. I'm more than supportive of any boyfriends frequenting a dive-bar or tavern, talking sports and playing pool - but it's usually just not my thing. Last spring, however, I signed up to play adult-league kickball in Ballard. And my kickball team was sponsored by the Sloop. Which meant every Sunday after our game, the entire team headed to the Sloop for beers and a re-cap of the game. And I LOVED it. I drank cider and ate greasy bar food (which is exactly the way bar food should be). The guys on the team loved "Slooper-sizing" their beers. We played various games and chatted with Ballard locals. God, I love this place. The Sloopersized beers (and before I drank beer, hard cider) have NEVER let me down, and the turkey sandwich is, for my money, the best in the city. The BEST. It's, like, real chunks of turkey breast carved off an actual (presumably dead and cooked) turkey, served with shitloads of mayonnaise and cranberry sauce on squishy, squishy white bread. This is hands down one of the best dive bars around Seattle. The beers are big, cheap, and really cold! We became acquainted to the Sloop back in the day when we used to play Underdog Kickball at the Ballard play fields. The Sloop was a great place to grab a cold one and celebrate our wins (oh and losses). And the Sloop still is a great place to hang out. Their nachos are some of the best in Seattle too. Any place where the average age of the patrons is 60, and I can get a beer the size of a Big Gulp is A-ok in my book. I love the Sloop and it's sort of oddish charm. Seemingly random bar decorations, the sweet, and helpful staff, and the strange banter you can have with other bar patrons. Going to the Sloop is cheaper and more entertaining than most movies I've been to in the last year. Plus, beer is delicious. Food's not to shabby here, and beers and munchies are of a pretty fair price. I love the Sloop. I've been going here for years for the Slooper-size beers, which are less than $6 for micros. But the atmosphere keeps me coming back. Everyone from huge groups of college kids and softball teams to solo old men enjoy this bar and are welcome. Food is good, not great, but certainly good. A note on the service: For some reason, the management of the Sloop only ever see fit to have one bartender for the entire place. This results in no table service sometimes, curt repartee, and the occasional misunderstanding when they are serving dozens of people on a busy night by themselves. They are all good people who will take the time to remember you after a few visits, if you do them the favor of being patient and pleasant. read more

Sloop rules! I brought my Aunt and Uncle here when I feared the Duchess Tavern was TOO divey. Though I was wrong about that, they loved the Sloop and claimed that it was the perfect dive! They loved all of Ballard based on the Sloop alone. I had a good burger, Chris had the turkey sand, and my Aunt and Uncle both had the fish and chips. $41 bucks for four lunches, a side of fries, one diet pepsi, and three Slooper-sized beers. Not too bad. My only weensy complaint was that service was slow because one poor guy had to do all the serving himself. The place was pretty busy for a Sunday afternoon too.
