We flew all the way from Cali to get a good plate of home cooked Southern food. Growing up in the 'Sipps, I really missed my Fried Chicken & collard greens. We each got the Mama Todd's dinner plate. Loved everything on it, & I asked for sweet butter to slather on my cornbread + half and half of the Sweet Tea. I also got the Lima beans and mac and cheese for the side. Service was pretty quick for a party of five, and we were seated within 20-30 min at most. Grabbed a Pinot Grigio and a beer at the side bar while we waited. They brought out hush puppies when we sat down, & those lasted about 30 seconds at our table :) The staff was simply wonderful; We also asked the hostess to help us take a family pic outside before we left. They have a cute shop where you can pick up a t-shirt as a souvenir- which I had to do because I LOVE THIS PLACE. If this was close to me, I would eat here every weekend. The prices are reasonable, the food is wonderful, and the staff was kind and hospitable. There are many places to eat in Myrtle Beach, but we love supporting local businesses that are family owned. Update: The Shack is one of my favorite restaurants for home cooking. We got there around 1 pm and waited for over 30 minutes for a table. That's how popular the restaurant is! I got the chicken and dumplings with three sides: one side was peanut butter pie which was delicious. The lunch meal also includes a beverage and bread corn bread or a store bought cold roll. I've been driving by this spot for years and it's always been packed... not regular packed but people parked in the street and the road trying to get in packed. This Thursday I was heading up with the wife to buy some fish and we decided to go for it. Of course there was zero parking with a parade of cars in the parking lot waiting to pick up food, when my wife noticed a pick up truck right in front of the place about to exit. She sped right next to the spot and jumped in before anyone realized it. We're in...or so I thought. We strolled up and there were about 35 people sitting on benches and rocking chairs under a tent right in front of the place all waiting to get in. I figured this is not going to be easy. I went up to the hostess station and asked how long for a table for two and she said 35 minutes or so. I looked at my wife and gave her my name. I had to find out what all the hub bub was about. In about 30 minutes they shouted my name and I sprinted to the front door...I wasn't about to lose my table. In we went and we're shown a nice size table in the middle of the place. It kinda reminded me of a beachy mom and pop diner. The friendly waitress came to the table right away, gave us our menus, showed us the specials board and took a drink order. The menu was simple but had some choices on it. While we were thinking, she came back with our drinks and we quickly ordered an appetizer. In this case, onion rings. A few minutes later my wife settled on a crab cake app and a salad which she asked to be combined. I went for the soup of the day(NE clam chowder) and one of the specials...pork chops(I took my grilled not fried) with 3 sides, Lima beans, okra & tomatoes stewed and green beans. The meal came with a choice of cornbread or roll. I opted for the cornbread. In a flash, the onion rings came out followed by the soup. Now I do love me some onion rings and these were fantastic. Crispy, flavorful and not stringy. The soup was home made. Creamy with bits of clam and chunks of potato. No salt or pepper was needed as it came out steaming hot and perfect. It was a meal in itself and I ended up taking 3/4 home with me(something rarely do). After a few minutes, the main course came out. My wife dug into a very large homemade crab cake, chock full of crab meat and very flavorful. She loved it. The salad was fresh and crisp. My pork chops came out and the size of the plate shocked me. Now, I almost never talk about price but my plate was $12.49 and I got two large perfectly prepared, juicy pork chops with a healthy helping of the best okra and stewed tomatoes I ever had plus absolutely delicious green beans and tasty lima beans. What a deal! The only thing that wasn't above average was the corn bread which was a tad dry and plain. Most of the regulars opted for the home made roll(and the fried chicken which was being served at every table!). I was stuffed and had trouble finishing my plate. My wife who said she was full, managed to save enough room for dessert. Now everyone was eating the homemade peach cobbler so I suggested that. My wife never had it before and was thinking about the Oreo pie, but I persuaded her and she was glad I did. Instead of the usual whip cream she wanted vanilla ice cream with it and it was a fantastic combo. The cobbler came out piping hot and crumbly with sweet chunks of peaches that paired well with the cold vanilla ice cream. She attacked it so fast that I couldn't get a picture. I broke my own rules and dipped in for a few spoonfuls and I'm glad I did. It was heavenly. The bill came and I couldn't believe how reasonable it was. Now I know why you can't get into the joint. We paid our bill and gave the super friendly waitress a nice tip and were on our way. We will absolutely be back and will try to time it a bit better so we can find parking...or we'll take an Uber...it was that good. read more

People always mention this as a great place for breakfast and I've been here but it's been a while. My girlfriend and I went, I ordered a Shack Special I think it was called, it had pancakes, scrambled eggs, bacon, and grits. My gf had an omelette. My complaint here is as soon as the dish was put in front of me I noticed how dark the pancakes looked. They were warm, not hot and looked to be slightly burnt. The edges were actually crispy. I think they must pre-make a batch of pancakes then throw them back on the griddle for a minute when someone orders them. They were maybe the worst pancakes I've ever had. My gf's omelette was perfect and my eggs bacon and grits were good. The service was good. I paid $33 all in for breakfast for two, I expected freshly made pancakes. We came when it was raining, but it was still really busy. My little kids enjoyed playing in the sand pit in the back searching for shells. We got seated after about a 20min wait and everything on the menu looked good. I really appreciated the complimentary hush puppies with honey butter. They were delicious. The littles got shrimp with Mac & cheese and a hamburger and fries. They each really enjoyed their meals. The older kids and I each got the Mama Todd's Dinner Special (meat & 3). I got the fries chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy and cornbread. One of the older girls got the fried chicken with fries and Mac & cheese and the other one got the grilled chicken with fries and Mac & cheese. Stopped into The Shack (finally...lol) for lunch today as I have been wanting to get here for quite some time. Their lunch special is $11.99 (which includes a drink) and the amount of food you get is totally worth it. I got the fried chicken lunch plate with squash casserole and mac n cheese and peach cobbler for dessert. The corn bread tasted under cooked to me which bummed me out. The food was so good and I had plenty of leftovers to bring home for the hubs. My friend got the grilled chicken lunch plate with Cole slaw and green beans and peach cobbler for dessert. She was very pleased with how juicy the chicken breasts were as they can be so hit and miss. Service was mediocre and only saw our server when she took our order and dropped the check off. The food is wonderful. No doubt, and the collards are sweet and the chicken sandwich was good but the onion rings are made there and dang if they aren't the best. The ambience is pure Myrtle beach... old Myrtle beach... the location is small so when it's busy, it's busy. We were there around noon and it was pretty full. The service was ok, nothing to write home about, honestly. The ladies (the waitresses were all women) moved about and checked on things. Everyone was so sweet and friendly! (We went with some lunch combos via to-go ordering and our food came in +/- 7 minutes) The "Chicken Bog" is incredibly tasty & filling. The fried chicken is what Chic-fil-A wishes it could be. The collards and mac & cheese are both top-shelf recipes ... to the point that my 6-yo - not usually keen on either - ate more of them than his french fries (which were also good). The peach cobbler and banana pudding weren't pretentious by any means, but they were definitely elevated compared to the average blue plate sweet course. I absolutely love this place. It's hard to find places to get good vegetables at but this one definitely has it rockin. Their menu lets you do the classic meat and 2 or 3 while also offering platter type choices. From the road it's not much to look at but surprisingly the interior fits more people than the outside lets on. I love their rotating specials where you can get southern classics or fish. I've haven't had anything where I thought "it's just ok". The service and food is great! Be prepared to wait for a bit to be seated though. This place is not a well kept secret. The steak on the surf and turf was suppose to be medium but was rare in most spots on the steak and it was heavily seasoned with pepper which was off putting to myself and husband. The turf part of it was 2 jumbo scallops and baby shrimp which I wasn't expecting. Being by the water I was expecting larger shrimp. Really really tasty home lovin' FOOD! The staff for one are all so sweet, & welcoming. We got sat pretty late because we were driving around trying to find a place to eat. The shack is straight up good. The honey butter hush puppies are so fun and a different type of hushpuppies then most are used to. Liked that they were complementary. The seafood was very fresh and battered wonderfully, not too thick and great seasoning. The shrimp and grits are divine and so home cooked, tasted like your grandma cooked them. Must go to this place! Definitely a place where locals go, and try to get there early normally a line. Also! In the summer they are OPEN PAST 8.
