I have not been to the sample room in years and went back because we wanted a nicer dinner experience in NE. I forgot how great this place is, and it has flown under the radar while maintaining a loyal following as other places have come and gone. The interior is comfortable, with a huge craft cocktail bar and beer list, both booths and high tops. The menu changes all the time. I had cheese curds, olives, and then a salmon dish. All were very good, and everyone in my group liked what they ordered. There was one klutzy server that dropped 2 drinks, a set of silverware, and a main dish while we were there to the frustration of her fellow servers, and to the point where we were cringing a bit (luckily the only mishap at our table was that I wore part of a glass of water that she knocked over). Serving tables might not be her calling! Anyhow - I definitely recommend giving this place a try or repeat visit if you haven't been here for a while. As a plus - private parking lot! read more

DON'T HESITATE--GO THERE! Their menu has a variety of Tapas, so it's a good place to sample things. And they also have basic sandwiches, some with their special twist, most quite good. But what's REALLY WORTH going here for is--(not kidding)-- their French Fries! They come as a choice with the sandwiches, but it's actually worth ordering them even on their own. They are hands down the best fries I have ever had. Not only are they done just golden crisp, etc., but they put a mix of fragrant fresh herbs and finely chopped garlic onto them. And then they put a bit of freshly grated parmesan cheese over that. Yum! As if that weren't enough, they make their own homemade ketchup, that is better than any "gourmet" ketchup I've ever tried. Dipping these fries into it is close to a transcendent experience. Unless you only like things completely un-embellished, these are likely to be the best fries you'll ever have. Wow!! Such a treasure we found! I believe this is the best place to date, I've eaten. It looks like an average little bar / Restraunt but no! Every item is a true wort of culinary art! The fish and chips is soaked in something that gives it a slightly sweet taste, cooked perfectly, flaky and moist, I actually peeled batter off to enjoy the put delicious fish. Fries have 3/4 different flavors, mix in spiced ketchup and a 5 star cole slaw and your taste buds are wondering what is up? I should have returned but was too embarrassed to as the staff was so nice. Service was fine. They have a $15 sample plate to celebrate their 15 years of being open. Right now it's a nice combination of salad, crab cake and broccolini, which individually are delicious, but an interesting mix of things to present on a plate. The crab cake was great and the heat off the broccolini was a little aggressive, but in a fun way. I tried the fish and chips - we liked their fries the best of all the things that came on the plate. The fish and slaw were all right, but nothing to write home about. My girlfriend had the beef tartare, which came highly recommended by the server. Honestly though, if that's the yummiest thing on the menu, I would never come back. The truffle oil was a lovely, subtle touch, but the cut of the beef was just off for me - the typical dice / mince size for tartare is usually like 1/4-1/8 inch, and this was easily double-triple that. I don't even think it would have thrown me, had it not been that it was a tough cut of meat too. We had a pretty bad experience here. The salmon served on the salad was literally refrigerator cold in the middle. The server came off as condescending when he confirmed that it wasn't us just thinking it was frigid. While waiting for a remake that seemed to take forever, I finished my burger which was quite good, however the pork belly is just unnecessary. I love this little neighborhood gem. Whenever I come here, I feel comfortable and at home in their cozy, dimly lit alcoves. Despite being in a busy area of town, its amazing that they have a parking lot to make my life a lot easier. The staff are always friendly and happy to see you. Plus, I love that instead of a sports game or the news, they play classic movies on their TVs (my absolute fave). They offer a wide variety of dishes and a lot of them on the smaller side so its great to get a couple to try out. Compared to most establishments, I think their pricing is pretty fair. My go to light snack is the truffle bacon fat popcorn...I cannot stop eating it! Of course, you can't go wrong with their beautifully prepared charcuterie boards. They also have an awesome variety of vegetarian dishes (I have heard amazing things about the caulilini tacos). Often their main dishes are on a rotating menu so its always fun to go in and discover a new and tasty surprise. I am a person who gets easily bored, and The Sample Room has never disappointed me and my ADD appetite. I love coming here and seeing some old favorites as well as many new innovations on their constantly-rotating menu. I also love the tapas format, so I can "Sample" a bunch of dishes, rather than committing to just one (I swear I only have commitment issues when it comes to entrees - I love you, Jon!). The ambiance of The Sample Room is dimly lit and intimate (sexy). High-backed booths line the perimeter, and there are several tables and a beautiful bar. It's a great restaurant to bring a date, or a friend to just cozy up and consume with. Some of my faves: The Charcuterie. You can't not get this. It is so beautifully created and presented. Every single thing on the plate, from the mustard to the cured meats, are all thoughtfully made in-house (except the bread). I believe their pasta is house-made too, so you should probably try it. The scallops are always perfectly cooked medium-rare with a crispy sear. I was very impressed with the cauliflower fritters too - they are packkked with flavor! I was an immediate fan of this cozy little restaurant that my Minneapolis host Sarah P and her hubby, Per P, took me to last night. We sampled (yes, pun intended) many different items from the menu and everything was fabulous: cream of mushroom soup artichoke gratin green beans sea scallops rare tuna bratwurst pork ribs camembert goat cheese Now before you start oinking at us for eating all that food I should probably mention that the portions are pretty small that is besides the 2 extremely large sea scallops- each one was about the size of my fist! Per went to town on the pork ribs and bratwurst while Sarah and I attacked the rest of the food. Per did mention that the pork ribs were a bit on the bland side, but that didn't stop him from polishing them off. Everything I tried was unbelievable- my favorites being the giant scallops, artichoke gratin, and camembert (i love my cheese). The service was just ok. Our waitress seemed to keep wanting to get away from our table (I promised i showered beforehand!), but the delicious food more than made up for the mediocre service. read more

I love the idea of the Sample Room, of the place where you go with friends or lovers to linger over shared plates of food and flights of wine or scotch (!). And I always warm to see the sweet, solid building with its elegant sign. I go pretty regularly, especially on half priced wine nights. But the food has never been excellent. It's all good. I like the cheese selection and the meats. I've had some disappointing veggie plates like a flavorless veggie tarte. Still, the whole nibble-and-share philosophy keeps me coming back (I've found the entrees to fall flat.). And the bread is good. One thing I don't like but try to understand is why the wall art is comically bad. Here we have a romantic, candle-lit room, full of murmurs of conversation and good smells, and the paintings staring out from the walls are unsettlingly out of place. I have to say my last visit to sample room was utterly disappointing. They removed their steak tartare from their main menu and moved it to the specials menu so it changes all the time. I almost cried as that is the reason I go to the sample room. We ordered Daily beef tartare- it was disgusting. We had to send it back. Cauliflower fritter- was pretty good Sweet potato and mushroom risotto- tasted like dirt it was gross Moroccan chicken wings with cilantro gel and yogurt- the wings all by themselves were good. The sauce was terrible and they had candied something or other and that was soooo hot it burned the crap out of my mouth and stuck into my teeth so I had to down a glass of water. I usually love this place but I was so sad to have such horrible food an honestly leave hungry. read more

This place is a gem hidden in plain sight. It deceptively looks like a local pub from the outside. That's not what it is at all. It's so much better. We went here for a team lunch and ordered almost everything on the menu. This is a great place to go with a group. You can taste multiple things. Some of my favorites were the cheese curds with sriracha sauce, the roasted beets, duck confit pasta and the scallops. Tried The Sample Room for the first time and our experience was good. Not wowed but would give them another try. The space is very small and intimate. You will be able to hear your neighbors' conversations in great detail. We walked in and had a short wait. We were seated, and then two more tables were sat after us. I think they were short-staffed the night we dined there, because it took a while for anyone to greet us and the tables seated after us were actually greeted first. Server was nice but seemed a little overwhelmed. Great wine list and menu looked great. Ordered the fried Brussels sprouts and didn't care for them. Too much fried taste, not enough Brussels taste. Then we had the Bottineau Burger and it was good, if not exactly memorable. Loved the texture of the meat and the bun, which was great. I'm not a pork person by any means. I like meat as much as the next person, but there's just something that freaks me about an animal head staring at you as you dig into it. So, as traumatized as I was when our waiter brought the pig's head to our table, I have to reluctantly admit that Anthony Bourdain and Andrew Zimmern were right about this place. That was some damn good pig. Our waiter was so nice and such a cool guy that he laughed hysterically at my expression when I saw the pig head staring at me. "Can you just turn it around so it's not looking at meeee?" I yelled at him and he responded that the pig didn't have eyes-- it had olives or something so it technically wasn't staring at me. It was hilarious. He got a good tip. :-) Since I'm not a pork aficionado, my friend had to explain to me which parts to eat. I'm not a fan of the really fatty parts of the pig, but the pig cheek was DELICIOUS. It tasted like crispy pork belly and it was so juicy that it just melted in my mouth. Of course, my stomach was not happy with me but I didn't care. I just kept stuffing my face. (TIP: the pig's head is not on the menu. You have to ask for it.) But it didn't end there. Oh no. There was ginger infused vodka. GINGER VODKA. Our waiter really liked us (I think he felt bad about my pig head trauma) that he brought us some sample shots. And of course I loved it so I ordered some ginger vodka cocktail in addition to the awesome beer flight that we had had previously. Needless to say, i was pretty drunk by the end of the night. Drunk off of too much pork and too much vodka. What really made this place memorable for me was TRIVIA NIGHT! My friend and I won second place (there weren't a lot of people that night) and as a prize we got a $10 bar credit. Well, it was happy hour (I think it was past 10) so those $10 went a really long way! I'm going to take responsibility for some of this, as some of this is my fault. Namely, getting the 'small' portion of mussels when there was an option for a larger order... However, you really never know - some place's "small" is another places "whoa that's a lot!" And, I had ordered a Caesar salad too, so I thought I'd be fine. Boy, did I think wrong. The mussels came half-opened, ie, they needed to all be cooked longer. They also came in a "coconut red curry broth with Thai sausage." The broth was OK, not as exciting as I'd anticipated, though the sausage had a nice, if almost chorizo-esque, bite and flavor to it. The Caesar was sadly rather lemony tasting... So... What happened there, exactly? If you know me, you know I'm all about sampling foods... but for $8 and 6 mussels? That's a bit steep, guys. C'mon now. My husband got the short rib philly sandwich and enjoyed it well-enough. It came with "peppers, onions, mushrooms, and blue cheese sauce on ciabatta." IDK. Maybe if you knew what you were getting into (we didn't, our kind hosts took us here b/c we are 'foodies') and want to blow a lot of cash on small portions (we didn't;) then maybe this is the place for you... But if you're a snob about Caesar salads, and find yourself thinking, "I've had three times the amount of mussels in NYC cooked correctly and better" - than this might not be the place for you. Went on a Sunday at Noon in January for brunch. It's a small place and it was packed, so no tables available. We sat at the bar which was fine. It was comfortable. It's a very cozy spot. Like you'd imagine a little pub in Europe might be. We were helped right away. Bartender was great and very hipster, in a good way. They state on the menu it's a scratch kitchen and locally sourced when possible. Love that! The had a chalkboard with specials that all sounded so good. We both got the farmers breakfast: basic eggs, bacon, hash browns and it came with a small portion of French toast. It was all perfection! The hash browns especially were so good. A little on the peppery side which I don't usually care for, but it was okay because otherwise they were dreamy. Eggs done how ordered, bacon crispy without having to ask. Did not have one complaint. Don't know why we haven't gone there sooner, but we will be back!!! read more

This could be a 3.5 but I'll give it a 4. Not terribly busy while I was there 5-8 but I imagine it could fill up quickly. You can call ahead (60 min) but you can't make a formal reservation. The environment is good - dim lighting and lots of wood makes for a very homey feel. The food options are decent. They do have sandwiches and single plates but it's also a great place for sharing dishes. For 6 people bill was 180 and change. I would recommend the sprouts, pork, and pretty much any of their cheese plates. They do a solid job with their charcuterie. Also - they have a solid diverse list of drinks and the wait staff can make decent recommendations for pairings. Dessert options were limited but quite tasty. Check out the pictures but honestly - the best way to do this is to go with friends and try to order as much as you can and share. As a resident of NE, I've passed this place many a time, and I now can say I should've come in sooner! The place is cozy, though pretty loud with tables pretty close together. You probably don't need a reservation unless you have a larger group or are going at prime time on the weekend. We highly recommend the oysters (the sauce is decadent), and the fries. The meatloaf was rich and tangy, but came a la carte, so be sure to order a side if you would like one. The small salad felt large and hearty when topped with grilled chicken. Be sure to wash it down with their wine flight--3 hearty pours for $11! Came here last night for date night. We were sat promptly and very surprised with how nice the outdoors patio was. Loved the deep low seats and flame heaters! Nice ambiance in general. Our server Chris T. Was very knowledgable and kind. He also was timely on checking in with us throughout the course of the meal. The food: some of the best Brussel sprouts I have ever had! I've worked in a ton of kitchens and restaurants so I was thoroughly impressed by this! I ordered the philly pork sandwich which was very good, of course anything slow cooked is! My boyfriend had the 3 meat meatloaf and loved that as well. The barbecue sauce was average. Our drinks were perfection as well. And we loved the banana cream pie dessert!! Let me review this place based on my 4 part brunch criteria: 1) Good Coffee, check 2) Good service, check our coffee and water was refilled 3) Great food and a unique dish. This is my second time to the Sample Room. The menu is always seasonal and sophisticated. If you are like me and like to try a little bit of a lot of things when you go out then this is your place. Tonight we had the cheese board, the arancini, the beef tartare and seared scallops. They actually had Left Hand Milk Stout Nitro on tap and I enjoyed the effervescent elixirs wine flight. All of the food was great! The staff was friendly as usual. There is a little bit of patio space that is amazing on a warm summer night as the restaurant property is located adjacent to the Mississippi River (no river view from the actual restaurant). We did have a slight mishap with the tables being so close to each other that getting up to use the restroom nearly caused a disaster. The staff was right there immediately to make sure that everything was OK, and it was, so the night went on seamlessly. read more

Almost Perfect Sat Brunch - we came in at 10:30 and snagged a table overlooking the park. Gorgeous sunny day in April. If it's a nice day, this is a fine place to grab some food then take a walk in the little park and enjoy the river. Food is excellent. Portions are ok, prices are fair for the quality of food. Six dishes, all excellent. Why not perfect? Well, service was somewhat distracted. And it was not real busy. And the bloody was...meh. Slammed it down and moved on to some excellent local beers. Lesson learned: never judge a restaurant by its name, as The Sample Room proved to be oh so much more than my expectations! They have a great drink menu in the sense that you have a wide variety of options to choose from, and if you're a cocktail lover like myself, they've got some pretty unique craft numbers that make it hard to decide on just one! I ended up going with the Haut Diggity Dog and loved every sip - light and refreshing, just the right level of sweet, and a slight kick from the pepper honey that gave it the unique twist it needed. Highly recommend this one if you're looking to stray from your usual vodka sodas or boring gin and tonics! Food-wise: I really, REALLY struggled to decide on my order, as way too many of the options made my mouth water. I finally decided on the burger, which was served with hand-cut fries. The burger was decent (good but not mind-blowing) but I think they might have forgotten the pork belly? (I don't recall tasting it at all...) What was more notable to me was the hand cut fries, as they were actually pretty crispy (which is very rare for hand cut fries), which was such a pleasant surprise! Of course, I can't forget to mention our waitress - this sweet gal named Rachel who was beyond helpful with her elaborate explanations of the dishes and drinks, and her excellent recommendations! My hubby and I had a Dealstork coupon for The Sample Room that was about to expire, so we decided to stop by last night for dinner on the patio. Luckily for us, it was happy hour which meant $1.50 Grainbelts, $3 off all wine and cocktails, and $3 house wines. They also have select small plates on special including their Quarter Pound Burger. The menu is divided into the following sections: charcuterie, cheeses, vegetables, meats, seafood and pasta. After looking over the menu, we ordered 5 small plates for the two of us: Roasted Vegetable Torte, Meatloaf, Chicken Sausage, Shrimp and Lobster Cakes and Straccetti pasta. My husband also ordered two of the quarter pound burgers on happy hour. All of the dishes were tasty, but my favorites were the vegetable torte and the straccetti pasta. The torte had really great flavor from the goat cheese and tons of roasted peppers, cauliflower and mushrooms all stuffed inside a flaky pastry crust. I also really enjoyed the pasta which had a rich and flavorful balsamic tomato sauce and creamy parmesan cheese. My only complaint about the pasta was that the noodles seemed a little overcooked. All of the meat courses were excellent, espcially the sausage. It had a really well-balanced flavor and was perfectly cooked and served with a sweet compote. The meatloaf was good, but nothing special, the homemade ketchup made the dish. Don't skimp on dessert if you visit The Sample Room. Their menu is small, but all of the options sounded delicious like the Seared Rhubarb Cake, Chocolate Decadence and Peanut Butter Brownie. I wanted one of everything, but we ended up ordering the ice cream sandwich, which consisted of rich chocolate cake made with Fulton beer and homemade salted caramel ice cream. Lovely spot on the river in a classic NE neighborhood. We sat outside, which was very socially distanced, and being next to the river and the park was the perfect scenery. I was a huge fan of their cocktail list, which included an $8 French 75, which I thought was a very reasonable price for my favorite drink. We got the charcuterie board for a starter, I don't think it was called charcuterie on the menu, and it had the most amazing Creme de Citaux cheese. The only thing is that the charcuterie board was kind of small for the price. Nonetheless, the entrees were a nice size and made up for the slightly smaller appetizer. We got the Cuban and the BLT, both were delish and big enough to take home half for lunch the next day! Next time we will definitely try the truffle popcorn, and maybe skip the charcuterie board to try another app. read more

The red wine here is stellar-I would recommend the flights to get a sample of what they offer. We ordered beef tartare, truffle bacon fat popcorn, mussels, the bottineau burger, the fried chicken sandwich, risotto, and pasta carbonara. The prices were reasonable. The food was EXCELLENT. It arguably one of the best burgers in the Twin Cities. The service was wonderful and I even a received a $5 gift certificate for next time. My Aunt had the Sausage, I thought it was decent, but all you get is a sausage for $8.00. Another person at out table had the Scallops and stated that they were overcooked . The Sample Room has been around for at least a decade in NE Mpls. It is a dark, cozy place with great food. We have been there many times and today was even better than usual! We went in for a late lunch and had the smoked trout eggs Benedict and a side of Brussels sprouts. Both were excellent and the only downside is by the time they were delivered to us they had cooled down a lot. With that said it was excellent flavors in the smoked trout eggs Benedict and the Brussels sprouts were crispy and flavorful! My husband ordered the seared scallops which were raw. The texture was so off putting that he sent it back. The smell was also off putting and pretty offensive. The yuca fries were crispy but lacked seasoning and flavor. I ordered the cheese curds and the combination with blue cheese did not work for me. The service was good but when we asked our waiter about the raw scallops his response was that they are seared scallops. As to mean thats how they are supposed to be cooked. They were cold in the middle. I don't know if seared scallops mean something diffrent here. We were pretty disappointed with our meal. We have been to this location in the past and it was a let down for sure. read more
