The food service and atmosphere are excellent . There are many dietary choices for the vast menu and all the food is cooked fresh and with an amazing array of tastes and sensations! This place was found by accident and it appears I struck gold in the culinary universe ! The menu has a wide variety of soups salads and main dishes in my case I chose the Mulligatawany soup which was amazing and order or Gobi Manchurian with Grilled vegetables, Bombay calamari for the table . The orders of Bombay calamari hit the spot as did fish tikka(Marinated salmon with aromatic spices etc.) Make it a point to experience this place and enjoy! read more

What a delicious surprise! This restaurant has apparently changed ownership very recently, and is now Indian/Punjabi fine dining, not traditional American/seafood. The waiter mentioned they should have a buffet soon; that would be nice to be able sample a bit of all the dishes they serve. As of this writing the Yelp page has not been updated so this is the correct website: https://www.therivergrillnewburgh.com/aboutus Ambiance: It's attractively furnished with cloth tablecloths and napkins. but still has some of what looks to be decorations from the old owner. The view of the Hudson, Newburg-Boson bridge and small boat port was lovely. The bathroom was clean. Food: The menu is extensive. Three of us ordered the lentil soup, malai kabab, chicken tikka salad, vegetable samosa (2), chicken tikka masala, garlic naan, papadums and the waiter recommended karson ka saag. It was a lot of food and we took some home. The samosa came first and was a desert size plate heaped with a delicious filling of chickpeas, curry onions, peas over two crisp fried samosa shells. The flavor was a wonderful creamy blend of spices and we all devoured it. Highly recommended, however it has cilantro and 2 of our party didn't like cilantro. Several dishes had cilantro, so for people who can't eat it--just request that they withhold it. The lentil soup (Mulligatawny on the menu) was spicy, heavy on cilantro and delicious. Garlic naan was delicious, papadums crisp and flavorful. The chicken tikka salad arrived after several dishes had been served and was a desert plate size of iceberg lettuce, tandoori chicken, onions and some other fresh veggies. It was fresh, but not special. The malai kabab was tandoori chicken served with mint and tamarind sauce and fresh onions, and other veggies. It was ok when warm, but a bit dry after it cooled. It was the least memorable of the dishes. The chicken tikka masala was traditional, spicy, creamy and delicious. The best dish was the vegetarian karson ka saag recommended by our waiter. I looked up the recipe afterwards and it's a blend of 4-5 fresh greens, garam masala, I could taste curry, ginger, garlic, onions and it was the hit of the meal. We ordered another to go and looked up recipes. Yum!!! Service: they weren't busy and service was good, we were not in a hurry and enjoying the view and sitting outside. We decided to take a drive up to Newburgh for lunch with a river view and then a nearby casino visit (Resorts Hudson Valley). We were greeted quickly and brought over some water. We were told when we walked in that they were in some type of ownership transition and they did not have alcohol available at this time, which was fine. It took a while for the waiter to come over and take our order. My husband order some type of turkey sandwich (had avocado and bacon and other yummy things) and I ordered the shrimp tacos , we both order it with a side salad. We started with their white bean and vegetable soup, it was just ok and lacking in beans and veggies, not enough. My husband said his sandwich was delicious , and huge, , he took half home! Although tasty, my tacos were over saturated with what ever the topping was and was very difficult to eat. Literally fell apart in my hands, the taco shredded immediately, less topping next time. Great place! Well lit, plenty of space, and good food! Fancy-like off the Newburgh waterfront. Lol Food/Drink: Really well cooked, decent variety on the menu. Great private event brunch and buffet style for wedding showers and funeral hours. Typical sandwich, burger, flatbreads, and salads. Appetizers: fried calamari, artisan pizza, and much more. Bar: Whole Bar! Complimentary bloody Mary's, the girls love em! alcoholic drinks were well mixed and not overpowering. Bar was clean, and well lit. Dinning Area: Average size, open concept. Limited seating!, but beautiful picturesque landscaping and overlooking the marina. Prices: pretty penny but you pay for what you get. Parking: A few mini lots, a large lot at the end. A few street spots on a weekday not too bad, on a weekend almost no parking. Bathrooms: Bathrooms were clean and small in size. Atmosphere: Awesome, quiet, quant, and comfortable. Staff/Attendants: Waitress was Great and highly motivated, very nice, and relatively attentive. Bar tenders were great, he really did it right. Manager was very involved and attentive. Fantastic Indian Food! our appetizer was Paneer Tikka, delicious and the paneer and vegetables grilled perfectly. Main meals were lamb Saag, lamb Gazab ki Boti (which I never had before) and Shrimp Curry. All were fantastic! The lamb saag and the lamb Gaza's ki Boti enhanced each other. Allow me to start off with some positive notes. Our server Mary was fantastic, extremely warm and welcoming. The bread that came out with an oil and vinegar mixture was an exciting first step that fell short of ever taking off to any spectacular. The bread itself was decent. The olive oil and vinegar were clearly to different qualities and served in a bowl that left you with a sopping and soaking piece of bread with little in the way of balsamic vinegar. In this case less would have been much more, as a business owner they could have cut some expenses and improved customer experience a solid win/win if they were paying attention. Our calamari was so greasy it left a pool on the dish. And while this is largely up to one's preference we prefer a crunchy outside for a breading. This, like the bread, was extremely soggy and reflected the texture of the calamari. As far as what they got right. The Mac and Cheese was stellar and almost redemptive. The tomatoes and caprese was also rather excellent. All in all the visit was like going to the airport, you go with hope and expectation but your experience is entirely ruined by TSA, you might go back or you might try another airport - but you recommend to everyone to never travel through there again. Gourmet is not (not that it's striving to be). But edible it is. Service is way up a 5- so are the cocktails! Food? Ok- but it isn't cheffed up or anything at this marina-front spot in Newburgh. In past, pre-Coronavirus summer days, we'd always sit inside with the AC- but during the pandemic, hubs and I opt for outdoor dining. Wait was minor so grabbed drinks at the bar and headed outside while our table got set. My guy Jake made a powerful and tasty revamped version of a Piña Colada while hubs got a too-sweet Long Island Iced Tea. Service from Brandon was on point and pleasant the entire time. Caprese salad was good and Mozzarella was fresh- as opposed to the commercial stuff you get at the supermarket. The slight heat in the fra diavolo sauce in our Mussels was tasty and great for dunking our bread. However, some of the mussels had an off taste. Hubs' steak tip sandwich had a nice helping of meat- but said it was bland. My Portobello+ Fresh Mozzarella+ Roasted Peppers on Ciabatta sandwich tasted good with a side of sweet potato fries. And second round of cocktails were better this time especially hubs'. My biggest issue aside from all this is, although servers, bartender and host had masks on, tables weren't spaced out at 6'. Much worse, the two tables diagonally to the left of me facing the marina, were at earshot and arm's length from me. Mind you, prior to sitting, hubs and I shimmied our table at least 1/2 foot away from theirs- which goes to show you, we were still close enough. Thank God no one was sitting to my right! Really nice spot that lives up to their claim of 'fine dining in a casual setting'! May I add that their are more than 'casual' in that I find their spot elegant, cozy and relaxing. It is charming and comfortable while overlooking the gorgeous Hudson River and Beacon neighborhood. I highly suggest enjoying it in the fall on their terrace they equip with gas heaters for added comfort on chilly Autumn evenings so you can admire the leaves. We came by real early around lunch time and parking here was not a problem, there is plenty of parking around the river area specially at lunch time. The staff was pretty nice and friendly. The place looked amazing with a great view of the boats and the marina right in front of the restaurant. I am a firm believer of day drinking so I went ahead and had on of their artesian mules. BANNERMAN`S MULE- this was a great choice, specially for the day time, it was refreshing and fun! had some shaved coconut on top and it gave a great sweet flavor and a entertaining item to pick on while I waited for the meal. BREAD BASKET - they brought us a nice bread basket with our meal and had not only the butter but also olive tamponade to enjoy. it was pretty great. LINGUINE CLAM SAUCE - this was my meal and I could not have made a better choice, the sauce was a bit liquid for my taste but regardless I enjoyed every last bite of it. it was a. well cooked pasta and a very nicely seasoned seafood. we had to ask for a parmesan side but besides that it was great. We also had some sorbet for desert: COCONUT SORBET - tasted home made and had some shaved burned coconut on top and some fruit, it was a pretty good sorbet, It definitely tasted homemade. Not a pleasant experience at all! Came with an 8pm reservation for a party of 7. We were told it would take 45 min to seat us (despite us stating we had a reservation) but upon reiterating our reservation time the staff sat us in 10 min. We were given such stale and rock-hard bread as a complementary starter. I asked the waiter if he could bring bread that is not stale / hard, he said "I can try to find some". It took 3 bread baskets before we ate bread that didn't taste stale or hard! The menu wasn't vegetarian friendly but the waiter was able to provide me with a pasta primavera dish. The dish came with a garden salad to start. The salad was mediocre and the pasta was tasteless. The sauce of the pasta was literally as thin as water. Wouldn't come here again. Every time i've attended here for dinner, it has been nothing but a warming experience. I enjoy more intimacy from my waiters and this place has never failed. During my last dinner here, my fiancé ordered their brisket and before Carlos left after giving us our food, he asked to see if it was cooked to my fiancés liking, it wasn't and was taken back to the kitchen for a quick minute, then returned perfect. My husband and I went to the River Grill on August 21, 2022. For our first time because our niece had a party at the River Grill to celebrate her Parents 50th Wedding Anniversary which is actually on August 20, 2022. The food that we had was very good also the Jacks and cokes that we had was very good. It was good spending time with family and friends for the time that we were there. There is a reason this restaurant has a poor rating. Horrible service (like, really horrible) and mediocre food. We arrived around 6pm on a Sunday night and asked if we could sit on the patio. The hostess told us no but we could sit inside. We pointed out the empty tables on the patio and she said no again. We sat down inside but could not stop being bothered by all the empty tables outside! When our waitress arrived my mother asked if there was any way to sit outside to which she said, "oh sure, we can do that!" As she went outside to get the table ready the hostess rushed over to her and talked to her. We still were moved outside. Worth noting that there were empty tables all throughout the patio throughout the evening where they just left empty glasses. Our waitress was nice, the only saving grace in the experience. But our food took almost an hour to come out! And we had hungry kids with us. There's been other bad reviews on the hostess. If it's the same hostess, why isn't she being properly trained? We had one of the worst meals we have ever had at The River Grill last night. We What is he called little sandwiches should have known when we walked in for our reservation on a Saturday night at 7 PM and there was only one other party in the restaurant! The appetizer was actually acceptable steamed clams, and small lobster salad sandwiches. However, the main meals were atrocious. Where do I start. My seafood with pasta included pasta that was overcooked with plain water, and no salt in the cooking water, therefore no taste! Seafood was piled on top but not cooked with the pasta - again, giving no taste to the pasta. Worse than that, the mussels tasted old, and possibly turned. Same can be said for the other seafood in my order - nothing tasted fresh! My husband got paella which included the same quality seafood I had but rice that was clearly pre-packaged as we recognized the taste from quick cook boxed saffron rice we have purchased at the grocery store. Nothing unique or tasty. And NOT paella! VERY disappointing and horribly tasting meal with a total bill of close to$150!!!!! We actually did not eat more than a bite or two of our meals and did not pack anything to go. I wanted to inform our waiter, who was very nice about the quality of the food, but my husband did not want me to do so. Frankly, the meal should have been gratis. It was awful. My friends and I chose this place for dinner after a day at the orchard. This is our first dine-in restaurant experience since the COVID lock down. Being quite vigilant, I'm glad we were seated by the water, spaced out from the other patrons. Our orders were taken promptly and were served in no time. The gap from the salad to the main course was quite long but we had the fresh air and views to fill it in. We got oysters, paella, seafood pasta, lobster sliders, and french onion soup. I really liked the soup because it was not salty. The cheese on top was divine. The pasta with seafood was pretty good! The calamari was tender and not chewy. The 1/2 lobster tail in it was also cooked perfectly. The paella, however, was not cooked authentically. It was rice-and-soup in a plate. There was another family behind us who heard that they were no longer seating and also walked out. We all briefly discussed what other restaurants were in the area because we all had hungry children with us. Passionate post alert! We had a reservation for 8pm. The hostess told us the kitchen was backed up and it'd be a 45 min wait. For a reservation. But that was resolved quickly thanks to another staff and we were seated in about 10 minutes. Appetizers didn't come until 8:56 and not all of them were brought out. I didn't get my soup or the salad that comes with the entree. Everyone at the table enjoyed their apps though. My salad arrived before my soup at 9:06pm. Then my soup came later. The food came at 9:27pm. But I will say the food was really good. The soup was flavorful and had plenty of seafood pieces. The lobster ravioli was so flavorful and the seafood was cooked really well. The sauce it was all in was scrumptious. Unfortunately, everyone else at the table thought their food was okay and that the chicken Caesar salad was overdressed. Overall service could have been way better because there was sarcasm and a tad rudeness. The ones who refilled water were nice though. I got the chocolate tort and that was good for being flourless. It was compt and he knew why lol, which makes this review valid because we didn't even say anything about the service to them. If I do come back it'd be to order food to go. read more

UPDATE: Thursday, July 2nd 2020 This is an update to my previous review. We decided to give The River Grill a 2nd chance after the kindness displayed by the owner (Mark) and his promise that he will change what my previous review pointed out. We went again as a re-attempt at our previous engagement dinner as recommended by family. I would like to point out that- Mark told his staff we were VIPs because the staff SAID "we were told you were VIPs." Truthfully, all customers should be treated as a VIP as I'm sure they normally are at the River Grill but just because someone writes a bad review doesn't mean they need specialized care. HIGHLIGHTS: -The staff was more attentive. The staff worked together. The star of the show was our busser/runner. The server & coworker made sure to give us great service. -The Raw Clams & Calamari were great. -Mark made a DELICIOUS dish that he call "Shrimp and Scallop with Lemon Wine and Pesto". I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS AND THAT THEY PUT THIS ON THEIR MENU. LOWLIGHTS: -The glassware was still dirty. Water glasses were filled with particles from the towel that was used to dry them. I understand that the glasses may have been cleaned and sanitized, but you should always make sure that only the glass remains and not particles from the rag. -The steaks were sent back 3 times. Not even going to add photos. The steaks ordered Medium Rare/Medium came out under under done. The 2 were 'black and blue' and the other one was medium rare. -We asked for Mark multiple times but being the head chef, he was busy. Understandable. However, he not only mentioned the previous review we posted aloud but very loudly spoke to us so that the other 3 tables, as well as his staff could hear the issues we had. It felt as though he was trying to make us seem like stuck up people. We asked him about the steak temperatures and showed him and he brushed it off as if to say "I gave you what you ordered and you're not happy". He offered to cook the steaks again (a third time) which he did. The reason for calling you over was to address the issues in person rather than having to write them out. However, he made us feel like a simple situation escalated, then offered a discount and dessert platter as compensation. *He spoke to me last time (last review) and said "I gave you a discount on your meal (not to our knowledge) as compensation so I hope you can delete the review" which I replied: "I will give you a second chance and then I will change my review based on our experience". I gave him a second chance...* I explained to Mark I want nothing for free. When a customer expresses an issue, you should fix it. He promised me 2 weeks but I believe it will need more time to fix. OVERALL: We spent $330 (with a discount already applied, graciously by Mark and we want to publicly thank him for that). We tipped appropriately and then some. I would like to say thank you to Mark and his staff. I am a firm believer on 2nd chances. I recommend River Grill for their seafood dishes and atmosphere. I do, however, and respectfully have to say that I do not believe the night was worth $330 by any means. It's a beautiful venue but did not hit the bar for us. June 18, 2020: I wanted to give it 1 star but we decided 2 stars was more reasonable. 1.The staff is rude, unhappy, slow, and have no manners. I came in with a good attitude and left feeling angry and unhappy. The staff is unsympathetic. The male busser literally rolled his eyes at me! 2.The staff is not helpful towards each other. I do NOT believe that this is a place that pools their tips. I say that because the other servers would look you in the eyes and walk away from your dirty dish filled table and not bat an eye. They wait for the bussers to do their job. 3.Glassware was DISGUSTING! I do not know who is "polishing" but it is not showing. I understand water spots, and the glasses can fog and be streaky, but having ACTUAL particles left over from the wash is just reckless and the fact that neither the busses, nor the servers could see this is incredible. After changing our water glasses out 3 times, then switching the plastic cups. Safety measures aren't not being taken and NO ONE CARES (our server served us this wine). 4.The food was ok. We ordered calamari, raw clams, and we both got the filet. The temperatures we ordered: MedRare and Med, both came out medium. Overall, the experience was awful and this was not cheap. $160 later I did not feel taken care of, or satisfied. These people that work there seem to hate their jobs, or themselves, or they might be going through some stuff. That honestly is no excuse. It's a luxury to go out and people go out to have fun, not cool dinner and be taken care of out. While you can have the absolutely entitled, rude customers, which I believe we were not. We came here for lunch and I enjoyed what I got, even though the fries were a little over cooked. I got the California grill (grilled chicken, chipotle remoulade, lettuce, tomato, bacon, avocado) and substituted the roll with marble rye. It tasted very fresh and I would get this sandwich again. Last night a friend and I visited The River Grill for dinner, upon our arrival we were greeted and told that there would be a short wait for a table outside which we were totally fine with; we were then encouraged to sit at the bar and a table would become available in 5 minutes. To make a long story short we sat at the bar for nearly 45 minutes, eventually the hostess came over to tell us that a table would be ready in 10 minutes. From that point we continued to wait all while seeing several tables open and available. Once we were seated we had to wait for over 20 minutes for water, and menus...we're still waiting on the bread (aka we never got it). The hostess came over to tell us a server would be right over but yet again we needed to wait; it got to the point that the bus boy came over to ask if we had just seated ourselves or if a hostess had seated us. The whole experience was way longer than it ever should've been which is a shame because the food was decent. I'd only recommend this place if you are looking for a good place to kill time...they're slow and understaffed. read more

Came for lunch. While the food was tasty, the service and ambiance needs some attention. We felt extremely rushed. Servers cleared dishes from table too soon, tried to take dishes with food still on them before we finished eating and they were already asking if we wanted boxes to take food home before we had finished the meal. They never asked if we wanted more drinks. Between both of these points, we could have enjoyed our meal at a standard speed and they could have had more business. We were done in under an hour and felt rushed out of there. Also, table near hostess area had employees eating their personal meals, hanging out and had their personal items and food spread out on it. Did not feel professional and looked unkempt. Also, they did not have enough cash to provide change for the bill and not much was even needed. Apparently under new management so hopefully these things can be addressed. read more

Ok the sangrias are strong. Too strong but i guess for what you pay for them, they better be. Stuffed lobster with potato croquet is amazing. That was the only thing worth the price. Raw oysters were fresh. Ahi tuna app tastes amazing- but you only get 4. Shrimp wrapped in bacon app again tastes amazing but you only get 3. Again food tastes great, but not worth the price.
