I call my experience, "Sorry to interrupt your conversation, but can I buy some coffee please?" That's basically the sum of what happened. I was in line twice when I was here, and each time, the person working the register was deep in conversation with the person who had purchased coffee to the point that a line started to form behind me. Come on. You're a great coffee shop, but shut the hell up and sell coffee. I don't care what's going on in you and your friends' lives... nor do a line of people behind me... and I would think that the owner would want to sell more coffee instead of free conversation. The oatmeal cookie cream pie thing was also a bit on the heavy side... the filling is a cheese cake type of stuff... a little too much on the heavy side. As others have noted, The Red Hook is a HUGE upgrade to what Pinwheel was doing. I will save you the trouble of reading the below thesis and say that it's a great cup of coffee, made on a fantastic machine, by someone who knows what they are doing and is glad to be doing it! ***Business Hours have changed: Open at 7 or 7.30 am and closed on Sunday. Pinwheel entered the espresso coffee business at least a year into it's existence, and did so halfheartedly with poor results. In the last year, as more and more items were added to Pinwheels' menu (soup, espresso drinks, ice cream- I think) it became obvious that Pinwheel was floundering. The Red Hook is a timely partnership. The front of the house is no longer run by the baker / owner (who did a great job, I thought but was stretched thin) or the spacey inept staff (staff has been an issue for a while). They use Stumptown Coffee (stumptowncoffee.com) on a La Marzocco machine! I honestly have not had as good a coffee since I was in Italy. They have revamped the interior (color scheme and furniture) with a definitively less 'day-care' feel, and less child seating too! Sorry, not a parent. I need caffeine before I am confronted with whiney kids that do not share my DNA ... WiFi - Not sure they have it for personal use. I hung out there on a Saturday not too long after they opened. There was no available wiFi at the time, but I have since seen people on laptops when I stop-in during the week. A major plus is the new opening time, 7 or 7.30 am. They are really opened too, unlike the Pinwheel sorta-kinda-but not really open at 8am. read more

I've been coming here every so often for over a year. Never fails to disappoint. I usually just get a latte or an iced coffee but they always taste great. Surprisingly never tried the food but it always looks amazing and has lots of vegan options (I mean it is Ferndale but still). normally i am really intimated by cute coffee shops that play music i might like if i knew anything about music and serve coffee that everyone says is good. but i wasn't! this was a great place to work, have an americano, and just hang out for a bit. there's not too much room but it's good when there is. i liked their coffee just fine, but i don't know too much about coffee (just need the caffeine), but anyone who likes coffee probably already has an opinion. the best was their snacks!! i had their bread pudding in the form of a large cupcake and it was amazing. i was scared it'd not live up the the sacred name of bread pudding, but despite not being drowned in boozy sauce, it was definitely bread pudding. they offered to heat it up for me, so the outside was crunchy from the melted sugar on top and the inside was gooey and super moist, not cloyingly sweet, and buttery and just excellent really. my mouth is watering just writing this review. my only complaint would be that i also got a lemonade and while it was not country time or anything, it was bottled, which meant i couldn't water it down like the lemonade control freak i am. i'll definitely be back and i want more snacks! read more

The Red Hook is a small coffee and bakery located in the heart of Downtown Ferndale and while the space to rest and enjoy your joe is extremely limited, it is still worth stopping in. They carry quality coffee here and a latte I can appreciate. Truth be told if ALL the coffee joints in the area had daytime hours I wouldn't be stopping in here so frequently but I digress. The barista provide consistent service and a consistent product however you may find yourself witnessing different levels of happiness depending on who you get face time with. Do a quick stop in while you browse the shops nearby and unless you want a more sugary junk coffee boost (sometimes this is what I'm after) stay away from that which is across the street. read more

When I lived in Ferndale, this was my Saturday morning ritual (after Steven B's Barber Shop when my hair needed some fixin'). It's very cozy, a place to enjoy the local comfort. Most of the patrons who stop by make it their morning routine and acquaint themselves with the staff behind the counter. I understand people want to grab their coffee and run, but I think this place provide a sense of community. Over the last couple of years, ownership has changed the layout of the place by placing more tables for people to sit. They've definitely made it 'seating friendly'. A line might form at the counter, but that's to be expected in a little place like The Red Hook; but take a moment when you walk into this establish, feel the heart and soul that have fueled the business - god I'm sounding like a total hippie - it's a good feeling they're still around given the other competition around town. I love Stumptown Coffee. The first time I had it was when I lived in Seattle. A distant memory I can visit every time I sip their coffee. read more

As expensive as the coffee is, I used to love the lavender latte with soy! It was worth the $ to me and it was such a treat. It didn't matter which barista made the coffee, it was always on point. I love the pour-overs and the cortado, and the affogato (espresso over vanilla ice cream) is more like "ohmygoddo". DO IT. Yes, it's got a tiny seating area. Yes, it gets loud. Yep, there are a bunch of laptop folks who often sit for hours, and some of 'em are kinda dicks about taking up tons of space and throwing their backpacks on all available chairs. I'm sitting in one of the Red Hook's fabled window nooks as I type this. On the blue-painted wall to my left is a cunning display of live plants in tin cans. The sill to my right is covered in potted succulents and in the display window behind me are stacked old cloth-covered books, more potted plants and cacti, orchids in straight-sided glass vases, and a small stuffed owl. My butt is cradled in a whitewashed captain's chair (yay armrests!), my laptop is plugged into an outlet right next to my two-top table (no tripping over cords!), and I have just consumed - nay, inhaled - a hazelnut scone fresh from the Pinwheel Bakery case at the counter. And, oh joy, the delicious coffee I ordered - a free refill, I might add - is steaming in an old-school thick ceramic mug. The staff is incredibly friendly, the atmosphere is cheerful and warm, and the other patrons are a widely diverse and universally friendly lot - I've seen several people get up from their seats to open the door for moms with strollers, people juggling multiple coffees, etc. Nobody is sitting around looking disaffected or sullen or too cool for the room. But who could possibly be in a bad mood at the Red Hook? read more

I'm the type of person that no matter how tired I am, I will make the drive for a damn good cup of coffee. I will park my car, feed the meter and walk a block or two for a damn good cup of coffee. If I lived in NYC, I'd take the subway (even into a different borough) for a Damn Good Cup of Coffee. Had I a bike...well, you know. That said, I'm pretty fortunate that such damn fine coffee is close to home. Sure it's a long walk or a short drive, but who cares. When I want to go out for the best coffee in Ferndale, I head for the Red Hook. Tasty, tasty stuff! Hot or iced. Pairs very well with one of Pinwheel's excellent sweet or savory pastries. Oh yeeeeah, Pinwheel. Let's talk about that. On any given day you will find quite a selection of extremely tempting baked goods. I've sampled their rosemary/cheddar scone, berry galette and blackberry muffins. All were very good but I must admit that scone was beyond awesome. Savory and *just* a bit sweet. Bakeries tell the soul of a city, each pastry strand a story of the patchwork of races and ethnicities which create a greater whole. Delicate Greek baklava, Algerian orange blossom water-infused almond pastes, or German cupcakes all have their own stories to tell. Ferndale is blessed by providers of baked goods, more the merrier as far as I'm concerned. The Pinwheel Bakery at the heart of downtown tried to fill a niche with vegan-friendly products and updates on classic recipes like shortbread, tarts, and cookies. I think it fell a bit short of the mark, but recently hoisted new sails (and awnings) to mark out a different direction than the one taken before. The result is a promising venture for a good coffeeshop. The Red Hook sails in on a fragrant wave direct from the nabob empires, its hold full of fine Stumptown Coffees, and a skilled navigator at the wheel of the espresso machine. I'm no black coffee connoisseur, preferring tea and coffees infused by chocolate and more, but I approve of the presentations here. When all these elements come together, good things are sure to happen. The crew staffing the counters seem to run smoother than they did at Pinwheel, though not with perfect polish quite yet. A different atmosphere rocks the house that replaces the aimless, head-in-the-clouds vibe I got before from my visits coming in for various pastry goods. Are there changes in staff or a different approach? Either way, prompt and direct service by enthusiastic people is sure to bring me back to this ship more regularly. I enjoyed Pinwheel Bakery's window displays for their whimsical humour and creativity, but I am happy to see the interior received a much needed update. Like captured vessels of yore, sometimes the old girl needs a new coat of paint and reconfigured decks to meet the times and needs of the new owners. Gone are the pastel walls and hand-drawn signs for a more mature palette of tones, and thank the powers that be taller chairs exist! Especially on busy days when other tables are occupied, this makes an enormous difference. I have a 35" inseam. Little plastic chairs made for tots are pure torture on my legs. I don't go to coffee shops to be folded up according to some ancient origami-yoga technique, and crammed in front of a little rickety table. The adult-friendly furniture comes as a relief. So too have the menus and bakery cases seen a much needed revamp, shrinking back to a manageable list of treats: muffins, scones, and other complementary sides for a cup of coffee. Vegan friendly options are still prevalent. Before I set sail to other climes, a few parting notes. I'm sad they aren't open on Sunday when I usually get out for a walk downtown. Why be shut on one of the prime shopping times in the city? I don't understand that move. Parking can be a bear at rush-hour and it's all metered, so try parking up a few blocks and taking a nice walk. I don't know whether they have WiFi here either. read more

Came here only because my friend's husband is apparently a total coffee snob and will only go to the best spots - and apparently this is one of them. I would've been perfectly content to get my usual holiday selection from a local Starbucks, but I'm glad I checked this place out. My chai tea (which I got with 2% milk; whole milk is the default) was decent, but the vegan peanut butter chocolate chip bar was delicious! Super impressive, since vegan stuff - and vegan desserts in particular - are pretty hit and miss, in my opinion. We were there around 3-4PM on a weekday, and the place had pretty much a nonstop long line the entire time. Don't let the hipster'y vibe deter you, the staff is super nice and the baristas put pretty designs in your latte foam -- I'm a sucker for that. The use Stumptown coffee and it's delicious. Speaking of delicious, please do yourself a favor and order something from the bakery. They have breakfast pastries, cookies, and savory goodies, as well. I'm starting to make this coffee thing a habit.... Been here a few times and this is now my second endorsement of the place here on Yelp. I wouldn't normally do this, especially since my first review was already a good one, but I am very pleasantly happified to discover that they have upped their game even more. Again, from a snob standpoint, my definition of "upped" in this case is perhaps going to be much more subtle to the average Joe (see what I did there?), but I'll say it anyway. But what's as clear as early morning sunlight, is that they have taken a real interest in making the best coffee and espresso around, not just by using a high end coffee bean (Stumptown is in that category), but also by using top-skilled baristas (I won't say "baristi", which is the correct conjugation, but sounds too snobby even for me). Do not be afraid to order any espresso drink, including the ever-challenging macchiato, the cappuccino, and the, um, espresso. Refuse the spoon, and drink it straight up. No addititives. You will be back. Despite the lack of water service (again), I still award them with all five stars. It's just that damn good! read more

If you need a great cup of coffee and a pastry to go, this is absolutely your place. The coffee is carefully brewed for quality, the small selection of specialty drinks are made well, and the iced tea is refreshing and tasty. The pastries are incredibly good and seem to be fresh-made, with a wide and seasonal selection. I've had savory pastries, English puddings, brownies, cookies, and macarons, and they're all great. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, always on their A game. If you have questions or a special request, they're very willing to engage. Unfortunately, the space is small and crowded. I frequently feel like I'm in peoples' way when I'm just standing in line or trying to put sugar in my coffee, and I definitely find it hard to sit down and relax with a cup or a cookie. Coffee was great! They serve Stumptown, so you know you're getting the good stuff. I tried one of the single origin beans as a pourover and was very pleased. They share space with a bakery, and had a large selection of treats available, but I didn't try any this trip. They looked delicious though! I didn't see any sandwiches or more substantial food offered, so this isn't a place for a meal. Decor is cute, pretty typical of a lot of independently owned, urban coffee shops. Employees seemed friendly enough, though we didn't really have much of an interaction, so I don't know how knowledgeable or helpful they are if you have questions about the coffee. The space is small so seating is limited, and there were no options for more than 2 people to be seated at any table. Tables could be moved together, but there was at least one person at every table, so it's just not great if you want to gather as a group. We were there mid-morning on a Monday, and I would be curious to see what it's like during a busier time of day. read more

Highly recommend! The staff was fast and knowledgeable. Their nitro was really smooth. On a 90 degree day, I tried the mocha on ice with a shot of rosemary vanilla and I could have had at least two. It wasn't overly sweet and the rosemary was a nice touch. read more

This was our first time here. My wife saw a post in Facebook about the nitro cold brew and we had to come over and try it out. It was fantastic, but the winner was the gluten free Mexican Chocolate Cake. Paired with the cold brew it was unbelievable. The staff was nice and very helpful. We'll be back. read more

Came to have a chat date with a friend and almost walked past it because the sign is pretty small! Ordered a cold chai with a vegan lemon sugar cookie while my friend ordered a (?) cookie and an iced chamomile tea. The coffee shop is small but very cute and a pretty nice to place to meet up with someone if you score seating. Loved being able to chill here for two hours and I believe wifi is free. The desserts look pretty tempting but I'm glad I stuck with just one cookie! It was enough sugar to last me for a while! read more

Whenever I'm in Ferndale, I do my best to get some delicious coffee from Red Hook! I've been going to this location for years (when it was strictly Pinwheel.) I myself am gluten-free, so I don't tend to get any baked goods. However, the Stumptown coffee is wonderful. I've lived in and traveled around Europe, so it's such a joy to be able to get a real latte. I feel the baristas take their craft serious and I thank them for their skills. I've had lattes in places like Vienna, Austria, so my standards might be a bit high. I felt the Red Hook is good at delivering though. Side note...I especially appreciate being able to get almond milk as a person with a real dairy allergy. Also, it was so amazing to be offered regular or vanilla flavored almond milk! So wonderful! I was a bit disappointed during a recent visit, however. I bought a latte and a bag of coffee for home brewing. I was very happy, almost blissful about my order. (I'm a simple girl, what can I say?). The young man who chatted with me was kind and friendly. However, the gal who rang me up was quite dour, unfriendly, and seemed perturbed by my enthusiasm and happiness. I get that working in customer service isn't always fun and has its own set of challenges. (I myself have worked in the service and food industries, so I understand). I really feel that most folks like myself are looking for a little extra, tender loving care when we make an effort to frequent an indie, local coffeehouse. I mean, I could've went to a coffee chain, but I didn't. I expect to have friendlier service, especially when my bill is over $20. Something as a simple as a smile or a "how are you today?" goes a long way. I will give the gal the benefit of the doubt. We all have bad days. Moved back to the area and decided to check out this coffee shop with my boyfriend. We both ordered a small americano and their roasted red pepper, garlic and goat cheese tart each. The americano was fantastic and lived up to the stumptown reputation, the tart was lacking flavor but I'd be interested to try one of their sweets. The service was fast, overall very cold in mood. The layout is a bit strange with one cream option by the register, bus tray on chair behind a table and merch for sale in the hallway that you would only see if using the restroom. The aesthetic is nice, but lacks good old fashioned hospitality. read more
