This coffee shop on the main drag in Ferndale is a nice place to stop, relax, have a coffee and perhaps get some work done. I also like the hours as it is open into the evening on Fridays and Saturdays. We walked in at around 8 PM on a Friday at which time the place was surprisingly empty. We got coffees, juices for the kids and a thick piece of Banana Coffee Bread to share. The service was very good, the seating area was comfortable (we used the sofas which featured plenty of padding) and the coffee and bread were satisfying. Prices were what one would expect. Ferndale has a handful of coffee houses...I'm pretty sure Java Hutt has been here for an eon. It's comfortable and quiet, mostly dependent on the time of day. I like that they give you actual mugs if you're staying at the Hutt to enjoy your drink. The staff was friendly too. read more

I hardly ever write reviews but I felt compelled to write one for Java Hut. And not for good reasons. The customer service was terrible, the lady who took our order was rude and unfriendly. The food was half-assed and dry. My wife and I ordered the spinach feta egg wrap and it came out with 90% raw spinach, a dousing of dry egg, and a sprinkle of feta. A part of the disappointment could also be from the expectation that the ingredients would be cooked and incorporated together. Or at least the way other vendors do it. Even Starbucks does the bare minimum with it by cooking the ingredients together in their offered food selections and it's primarily known for it's coffee... Lastly the coffee. We ordered mocha latte and a chai latte - the chai was decent but the mocha latte was horrible. There was no sweetness to it, only bitterness. And we saw that there was a large powder residue at the bottom of the cup as if cocoa powder was added and then the coffee without stirring. It's completely inedible/undrinkable. Overall: if I could give zero stars, I would. But I guess I can suffice with 1 star for the mediocre chai latte. Don't go here if there are other options for available to you. read more

Can you believe this is the first time that I've been here?! I reserved the couch area for my group. I love the couches and it's coziness. It's perfect for a group discussion or just hanging out so your back doesn't hurt. There are also little tables to the side and along the wall. It wasn't that packed and it was quiet. Great place to relax in downtown Ferndale! My boyfriend and I spend the day walking around Ferndale and stopped in here for a drink. My boyfriend got the hazelnut iced latte and asked for light hazelnut. He said that it was perfect and not too sweet. I ordered the French or Italian soda (I can't remember which) with orange flavoring. It was great! Tasted like a dreamsicle! I don't see made to order sodas very often on menus. Ahh Java Hutt, the memories this place has for me are many storied over the years. I've launched businesses here, taken countless meetings as the place where East meets West and someone just HAD to meet-up. Needless to say i've made a living at little places like this, and this place in particular. The coffee is really good and the Chai is great. I have yet to enjoy a Bubble Tea, but I hear they are oddly satisfying. As a side note, that was the Wi-Fi password: bubbletea. The layout of the Java Hutt is cozy, with overstuffed couches and table/chair combos on the outskirts. Here I go again, reviewing a coffee place, and I don't drink coffee. But I'm digging you, Java Hutt. The atmosphere is comfortable, lots of table seating and big comfy leather couches. Parking is metered which is to be expected in downtown Ferndale. The baristas are nice, while not always consistent on the beverages. The Chai Latte is pretty solid. I like the hot chocolate too. I've tried a few of the baked goods and they've been decent. My wife digs the coffee (although she has told me that their coffee doesn't reheat well). They have lots of loose leaf teas to choose from. I haven't tried any of their sandwiches yet, but they look tasty. Nice people, good teas. What else could a non-coffee drinker need? read more

This is my favorite coffee shop to go to for lounging or getting work done. They have lots of seating and comfy couches. The baristas are always really friendly, and the food is good too! I've only had the soup so far but it's really scrumptious and they have a lot of options. They also serve tea (they have glass bins so you can smell first), bubble tea, and yummy desserts. The vibe is super laid back, which I am SO into. Some people are into uppity hipster-type atmospheres, which you won't find here. It's more down-to-earth and approachable. Plus they have a really nice patio during the summer, where the people watching is unmatched. I love all the plants in the windows. Found this place while looking for a spot to grab a coffee and perhaps a dessert. Shouldn't be so hard to find coffee shops that are open after dinner, but it is. So, we were happy to find Java Hutt. Many permutations of coffee drinks available, from straight-up black cuppa Joe to fancier lattes, cappucinos and the like. Small but tantalizing selection of desserts. I enjoyed my banana walnut bread. Also - appreciated the employee's honest appraisal, which helped me choose between the banana bread and another type of bread that was available. Ferndale's Java Hutt is ok, but it's no Cafe Con Leche (my favorite and the model all cafes must conform to) During it's downtime, JH can be a really excellent place to read/study. It gets SUPER quiet and there's lots of good indirect light from the big front windows, while the overhead lighting on the smaller tables near the register are also very good. During peak hours, and especially at night, this place gets nothing short of rowdy. People are hollerin' to each other from across the room, there always seem to be large posses riding in, and everyone's having a grand ole time - unless you're me and prefer drinking coffee by your lonesome cuz you just wanted to get out of the house. The service is quirky, but generally good with a little non-personalized sass on the side. If you can ignore it, the servers do what they do quickly and with skill. They sell bagels. The first few times I went in for bagels, I would point to the everything-bagel in the display case and ask for one of those. The staff would tell me, we're all out. At first I thought this was some kind of passive-agressive FU that left me in utter confusion. So i insisted, this one right here, I can't have that? And then the staffer explained, "those are only the display bagels, we're all out of everything-bagels today". So i felt MUCH better about the interaction I just had, but that feeling of relief was followed by the heebie-jeebies trying to understand WHY a coffee shop would have DISPLAY BAGELS? kind of gross, no? They have some of the better decaf coffee in the suburban area if you need that resource (which I do, often). Their outdoor patio in the summer is not that great. It never gets any direct sunlight and its super cramped. If summer patio coffee is your pleasure, head to AJs up the street for more leg room and TONS of neck-singeing sun. read more

Ferndale benefits from four distinct coffeeshop models -- the slick (Torino), the chain (Tim Horton's), the bohemian (AJ's), and the modern (Java Hutt). Java Hutt delivers without any surprises. It represents pretty well everything you might come to expect from an independent coffee place: a selection of specialty drinks, a few baked goods, free wifi, lots of tables and a few comfy couches for long-term loungers. Menu boards list out the day's offerings and the prices are strictly average. Employees dole up cups of joe and tea in large mugs or takeaway cups. Posters on the front window advertise local events and plug Ferndale activities, a definite plus to get to know what's around time. The view onto 9 Mile can be an inspiration for a writer or a distraction from a book for a reader. Java Hutt has two very different faces, as noted in previous reviews. The quiet Hutt is a nice place to curl up for a few hours and get some work or web surfing done. Facing a wait time to visit the doctor or between work and play? Stop in and those moments fade into a pleasant hum of life at a nice pace. The smaller tables give space without leading to the dreaded table-sprawl which has turned the Caribou at 13 Mile and Woodward into such a nightmare for me; two tables shoved together equals less space when one or two people occupy them. Java Hutt's setup is nicer. On the other hand, show up in a weeknight or a mid-Saturday, and the evil Jekyll Hutt is out in full force. There's scarcely room to move, the plug-ins are full, people turn into barnacles on seats for hours, and local meet-up groups dominate matters at 80 decibels sometimes. I've given up on finding a spot for other, greener pastures. When the activity between Java Hutt and AJ's Cafe reaches a critical mass, there's no where to sit on this side of Woodward until you reach Oak Park, I swear. The drinks in Java Hutt are good and no one complains if you've been there for a few hours. I've met some of the chattiest people in Ferndale here -- students, activists, regular folk interested in the novel I'm writing while staring out at the Rust Belt Market. It's a breezy place to be. Just note: paid parking all around, so be prepared to plug the meter or deal with a ticket. read more

Coffee is good. But the teenage girls who work at the counter clearly don't think anybody over 20 should come to "their" store. Service (they just make coffee) is bad every time I go there. If you are planning on using WiFi then be prepared for horrible performance. In one hour I had to ask them to reboot the WiFi twice-both times with an obnoxious response. I've been a pretty big fan of Java Hutt in Ferndale - Stopping in for a coffee was something I definitely do with a degree of frequency. I like the lived-in feel of the place - I like the artwork on the wall - I like the outdoor seating - I usually find the staff pretty friendly. There is always quite the eclectic customer base hanging out at JH- and I really enjoy that. Having said that - the past couple of times I stopped in there seemed to be some newer staff who were a little less helpful, made me some bitter-a$$ drinks, and a coffee that just didn't taste like it was supposed to... When I commented that my drink didn't taste right- they didn't really offer to do anything about it. It was kind of like - Oh well, not my problem. I'm not ready to totally write them off yet, but I'm disappointed. Hopefully this summer they'll earn back my thumbs up. read more

We stopped in just for a sec while we were conducting other business in downtown Ferndale - basically we needed to use a bathroom and one can always use a cup of coffee for the road. My husband reported that the coffee (roast of the day, Guatemalan if memory serves) was not extraordinary but about on par with Tim Horton's, so that's the reason for 4 stars rather than 5. It didn't seem expensive and he likes Tim Horton's, so I don't see the problem. I must say that I've never seen a cup of coffee make him so hyper! He fidgeted and chattered half the way home, it was hilarious! I just got a water and a cookie, and if I were basing my review on that, I'd give it 10 stars. That chocolate chip cookie was totally awesome!!! And I know my cookies! Plus I was impressed that they gave me a humongous cup with a lid and a straw for my water, and didn't even charge me. I'm so used to getting a dixie cup when I want water. At Quizno's they wouldn't even give me any because they were "out of water cups" - but that's another story. Anyway, the barista was bubbly and pleasant, the prices were reasonable, and the cookie was out of this world. I'll definitely go back and hang out when I have more time. C'mon Java Hutt. Get it together. You've got no competition, in terms of a "real" coffee shop, in downtown Ferndale, but you just keep screwing up. Each time I've been in here to order a chai latte, its tasted different. Ranging anywhere between good (not great), and downright awful. The mixture is all over the map. The last time I had one, I had to take it back up to the counter so that they could add chai into it (so it tasted like something other than steamed milk), and the girl actually ROLLED HER EYES. I am *not* a difficult customer. I realize people have bad days, are busy, etc., but the least you can do is make my drink taste better when you've screwed up. The atmosphere is good enough - standard coffee shop set up, and the patrons are a nice mix of hipster, professionals, and (gay) moms. I really WANT to like Java Hutt, and I'll keep going back occasionally to help support local business, but I just want them to pull it together. Insure some consistency, hire staff that isn't aloof and/or snarly, and make me believe you can get my chai right, for goddess' sakes! read more

So I am probably giving them a more generous rating since they are so close to my house. Out of sheer convenience I've been going there to have a place away from home to study at. Their staff is generally pretty friendly. They seem to have a decent selection of cookies, pies and other sweets to nibble on. Their PB and chcolate bar is really good. I tend to get white mochas, chais and lattes, so I can't comment on the quality of their drip coffee. I have had a few bitter drinks, but I don't know if that is because their espresso has a bitter quality or if the baritas are pulling the shots wrong. It is a much better studying/work environment during the day. We went the other night and the place was full. Most of the outlets were being used and their was a very annoying group of people using up the couches. It's not that I minded that they were hogging the couches the whole night but it was the fact that one guy in particular was a real "know it all." It must have been some type of group meet-up, and I know that it's common at coffee shops and they usually don't bother me at all. But this guy was loud-- he kept raising his voice and talking over other people and it was obvious he loved the sound of his own voice... this went on for hours. And the crap coming out of his mouth was enough to make you roll your eyes and gag in his general direction. Never mind all of the people with books and laptops who are obviously there for a quiet environment and some coffee, right? Came because there were exactly two places open Labor Day morning for breakfast. Super hipster vibe, which, for me, translates to an awesome atmosphere. The kids climbed all over the couches. We loved the living room atmosphere. There was a guy working on his laptop that set the vibe for the restaurant. Nice music choices! Regulars were obvious, everyone was laid back, and the coffee was dee-lish. Took away half a star for the Italian ice (tasteless, ice wasn't crushed).
