So I am probably giving them a more generous rating since they are so close to my house. Out of sheer convenience I've been going there to have a place away from home to study at. Their staff is generally pretty friendly. They seem to have a decent selection of cookies, pies and other sweets to nibble on. Their PB and chcolate bar is really good. I tend to get white mochas, chais and lattes, so I can't comment on the quality of their drip coffee. I have had a few bitter drinks, but I don't know if that is because their espresso has a bitter quality or if the baritas are pulling the shots wrong. It is a much better studying/work environment during the day. We went the other night and the place was full. Most of the outlets were being used and their was a very annoying group of people using up the couches. It's not that I minded that they were hogging the couches the whole night but it was the fact that one guy in particular was a real "know it all." It must have been some type of group meet-up, and I know that it's common at coffee shops and they usually don't bother me at all. But this guy was loud-- he kept raising his voice and talking over other people and it was obvious he loved the sound of his own voice... this went on for hours. And the crap coming out of his mouth was enough to make you roll your eyes and gag in his general direction. Never mind all of the people with books and laptops who are obviously there for a quiet environment and some coffee, right? I am pretty sure they are locally and independently owned, so I would much prefer to frequent them over a chain or corporate place. read more

If you're going to close early because you're short staffed, I'm not unsympathetic. Truly, I've been there. BUT a sign on the door warning customers would have been appreciated (since it was something the gal said she knew about ahead of time). I am now stuck outside on the patio waiting to be picked up. Java Hutt is quickly becoming a place I will be avoiding (because this isn't the first I've been ushered out the door before the posted close-time without warning) which is a shame. Great atmosphere but the coffee wasn't great. One batch was lukewarm and the other had a strange after taste. The good thing is that their food options are pretty good for a coffee place and they have a great location. They have wifi but stress it and the restroom are for customers only, which is not a problem but the multiple signs come across as unwelcoming. read more

I think that the atmosphere of this place is terrific. They have good homey treats and a decent selection of lunches -- sandwiches etc. The coffee is OK, nothing amazing, but good nonetheless. The outdoor patio is great. Staff is friendly, for the most part. It's odd how they served me my iced coffee in a Styrofoam cup, though. The one thing that I didn't like was how their WiFi is totally broken. Java Hutt is one of my favorite hangouts, and I've built up some wonderful memories over the years. The seating is as good as it can be in the small space, and the staff doesn't seem to mind if you move tables and chairs around--if you want to stretch out, the couches are incredibly comfy. There are plenty of outlets for your laptop, but the WiFi is kind of spotty in my experience. The drinks are tasty, if not exemplary. The coffee is good, the blended drinks are definitely better than Starbucks, and the loose-leaf tea is of solid quality. There's a good assortment of pastries and snacks. The menu has been upgraded in the last couple of years--it's nothing amazing, but decidedly suitable coffeeshop food. The sandwiches are fresh-made. I wouldn't go here specifically for lunch, but if I'm hanging out here I know I have some decent options for food. If you're looking for somewhere to hang out for a few hours and not spend a ton of money, this is the perfect place. read more

Java Hutt is an OK coffee shop. It reminds me of many of the middle of the road coffee shops around the country. It's not trying to be hipster and it's not trying to be fancy... it's just a decent place to work and drink coffee. The staff were great people and the coffee was on point. The seating was worn leather couches for the most part that were comfortable, but that you felt like you could catch something from (which isn't atypical of coffee shops). This place is a solid 3 stars. I would go there if you want a kick from coffee and don't want to be ignored and have to listen to the loooooong conversations of the baristas a bit down the street at the Red Hook. read more

I'm sad. I had high hopes for Java Hutt. I used to love it back in it's Birmingham days, and I was looking forward to trying it out for the first time in Ferndale this weekend with my bestie. I will say that I am torn with the rating. if I could give 2.5 stars, I would... for the coffee alone. This location, unlike the old Birmingham location, is ultra modern feeling, with very little comfort appeal. There are 2 comfy, yet out of place looking, couches. One had a rather large man sleeping on it, so we avoided that area. The two people that we were working were exceptionally unfriendly, and seemed as though they had no idea how to properly manage the place, because one of them took our orders, then they both were preparing one of the drinks at the same time. On the other hand, my cafe au lait was great, and my friend's SF raspberry latte was great. We had some sort of quinoa energy bar that was pretty good too. The food didn't look like what it was before, but they're not a restaurant, so you take what you can get, I guess. Will I be back? I'm not rushing back, but if for some reason I'm in Ferndale and find myself having a craving for java, I won't rule out Java Hutt. read more

This place feels dirty so I left after trying to stay for half an hour. The patrons were quite the variety. The tea was good. The food was okay, but the uncleanliness of the tabletops and chairs creeped me out so I couldn't help but wonder how the food was put together. Did they wash the spinach? This is a perfect stop in the middle of downtown Ferndale. Whether you want a cup of black coffee or a latte of some kind, it's going to be perfect at the Java Hutt. The only reason why this wasn't a perfect 5 stars is that I usually have to go across the street for better vegan baked goods. As far as atmosphere goes, this is all you could ask for. It's pretty quiet (no matter how crowded it is), they are usually playing some solid music, and they have plenty of seating (some couches, even). I've spent a handful of afternoons doing work there, and the staff welcomes it. Free wifi. During summer, they have a patio with tables and chairs. When relaxing with my dog, they'll bring out a bowl of water for him. During the winter, they don't hesitate to invite my dog in while I place my order. Java Hutt has evolved from a 3-star cafe to a gross little place with terrible coffee and mediocre food. I used to hang out there quite often, but since discovering The Red Hook across the street, I've vowed to never return. On one of my last visits, I got a large coffee to go and wound up dumping it out in a parking lot because I just couldn't drink it - way, way too strong, and the beans aren't that good anyway. The last time, there was a different barista behind the counter, so I was hoping for something I could actually choke down. Alas, I got about four tiny sips in before giving up and asked for an americano, which wasn't any better. Also: their bathrooms are totally disgusting, which is never a good sign for what might be going on in the kitchen, and there are almost always tiny flies near the uncovered bagels on the counter. I could go on and on about this place, but instead, I'll just recommend walking across the street for a much better cup of coffee at The Red Hook. Nice coffee place with a hipster feel. The medium roast coffee had a strong aftertaste, but this dissipated after a few sips. It wasn't exceptionally hot here, but there didn't seem to be a lot of airflow circulating. I only mention this because the room was stuffy, making it a little hard to breathe. My fellow Michiganders with seasonal allergies will understand my pain. They do have a nice outdoor seating area which was nice. Came here while my car was getting serviced. Like others have mentioned its okay. They did offer boba which did peak my interest but it was way too cold for that. I ordered a mocha. It was pretty good and the service was decent. I parked myself on one of their four black leather couches. It was comfy considering I don't own a couch. The couches does look a bit old. Does need a touch up. Overall, it was pretty quiet and it was a quick hour that I passed here. read more

Huzzah for consistency! Java Hutt employees consistently take my order in a friendly manner, deliver the delicious goods, and make pleasant banter... even on my "rare form" days. I love sitting at a table next to the wall while drinking a steamed milk and making my business happen via laptop. Some things to note: 1) You need a key for the bathroom. 2) You need a passcode for the WiFi, but it's free with purchase. 3) The hummus is delicious, as is the tasty turkey. I recommend getting both and splitting with friends. 4) There are limited plugs, but the table all the way in back and two tables up both have plugs for sure. Otherwise do a good search or come with a charged battery. 5) Check out the awesome community wall in back. Find a gardener, a yoga class, or a civic expo posted. Leave a business card. Grab a free magazine. It's rad. Edit: I should mention that I'm allergic to coffee, so I can't judge their roast. However, I've had EVERY non-coffee beverage they have and I give it two thumbs-up. This place is bomb. I haven't had a bad drink here but I'm always coming back for their Americano. Which to this former barista means they use a mean espresso bean! Hot drinks are hot here, not lukewarm. And cold drinks are solid cold, not "I poured you a hot drink over ice so now it's iced." The crew is nice. Everyone has their own style and personality which feels refreshing in a hipster town. The customers are the absolute best, filled with great smiles, greetings and stories! Found PLASTIC BITS in my apple pie and my Cinnabon bun was RAW on the inside. The mocha frap just tasted like you took a normal frappe then watered it down. Very strange. My first time coming into Java Hutt, I came through the back. The bathrooms to the left and a few two person tables on the right. The narrow ally leads to the more open space in the front of the coffee shop. There are 4 wonderfully comfortable couches, around 10-15 two top tables and a few 4-5 top tables. There are outlets scattered around the place and it's not too hard to find one to plug in. The Wi-Fi is fast during slower hours. When Java gets to it's full capacity the internet does slow down significantly. The people are always friendly and overall, the vibe is a really chillaxed, enjoyable one. Sitting down and reading a book for a few hours. Prices are reasonable and the guests it draws in are all very awesome. read more

One of the worst coffees I've had in a long time - from a coffee shop or otherwise. First off, we were only there because Red Hook wasn't open and I really wanted a latte. Nothing super fancy. It was so hot I could barely hold on to the cup, even with a sleeve. When it finally cooled off, I found it was a café au lait, which would have been fine but the milk was burnt. I like the atmosphere for the most part. It's cozy, no one is invasive or loud or whatever. The music is laid back, standard coffee shop medley. It's a chill place. The coffee is great. I love the white Mocha. Great coffee, no complaints on the fare. However, the darn internet is the worst. I have been coming here randomly for the last year, and I enjoy sitting down and getting some work done on my laptop in a coffeehouse. But there is no way to get work done when the internet is VERY slow, and then drops the signal out of nowhere if I am simply opening my damn email. This is not a one time thing either. Nor is it my computer, because this computer works fine right now on GOOD internet and everywhere else. Also I have brought 2 different laptops there and the outcome has been the same. For whatever reason, the management doesn't know how to upgrade their internet to a commercial status that is definitely strong enough to satisfy the capacity of its customers, even if the house is full. Come on people! I really like coming there, but I'm not going to sit there for an hour restarting my computer, internet connection, and going to the counter to ask you to restart the modem every damn time I come in there!!! I'm coming in there one more time, and if it happens again, which it will based on mathematical probability, I'm done. Seriously, call Starbucks and ask them about their network. Walk up to the barista, ask what kind of coffee they have. She says an Italian dark roast, a medium house blend, something decaf, and something vanilla. I clarify, "No, like what kind is it?" She says, "You mean where does it come from? Or what company?" I say either. I like you though and visit you fairly often but there are simply things about you I wish were better. Service here is pretty straight forward, no frills. Honestly, I think some of the employees here must stick to decaf because their excitement over being a barista is fairly minimal. I have no idea what being a barista is like but I'm assuming not very fun at Java Hutt since that is the the air they give. Don't get me wrong I don't mind and am not hurt or offended that employees here don't seem like they've been waiting to meet me their entire life, but any establishment is going to have a hard time pulling five stars without going beyond the call of duty. The coffee is decent. I like their normal brews and with specialty beverages prefer their cold drinks over their hot. Free wifi with purchase, but if you come late don't expect to be able to get much studying done because this place gets hoppin'! If you are looking for a chill moody atmosphere to dive into as you feel awakened by your beverage of choice I would search elsewhere.
