Parked my car in front, and I didn't have change for meter, cop was standing there, said I will run in and get some quarters at Java Hutt, my intended place to Eat and Drink, the Unprofessional girl at the counter said NO Change, Only with Order. I am writing my obituary for Java Hut. Gotta let you go. The wifi doesn't work, the food, particularly the scones, are stale and hard, and to add insult to injury, you charge a minimum for using a credit card, more than likely a violation of your credit card agreement. I've patronized you for quite sometime, heck even gave you several positive reviews. But the truth is management doesn't care anymore, so why should I. While I do always enjoy their coffee, everytime I go in I can't help but redesign the entire space in my head (maybe just the decorator in me). This place could be soo much nicer!! Needs a good paint job, floor refinishing and new furniture and art. Also, the ambiance would be helped with some cool music. Again, while the coffee does it's job, they have very few choices for food. They could make a killing if a little effort was made in this area. Java Hutt is fine. But the wi-fi, although free, is a nightmare most of the time. They might as well not even advertise it most nights since it's so slow. I'm a glutton for punishment I suppose, but I just sat here to see how long before I could open my email. 50 minutes before the page finally opened. Beyond that, the place is fine. The coffee is only A-Okay, but where Java Hutt really wins is in their service. Man, their employees are like the nicest people in the world. I've gone there on a bad day specifically to be cheered up. Again, their coffee is definitely nothing to write home about: more like Starbucks than Red Hook across the street, but Java Hutt has ALL THE ROOM IN THE WORLD to spread out and enjoy your food and drink. Couches, good Wi-Fi, lots of tables, the Hutt is a fine fine place to spend a few hours working without distraction. And, again, they are mad nice there. Java Hutt is essentially a utilitarian kind of coffee shop. It's open early and late, they have bagels and sweets in addition to all the liquid stuff. I do run into cool people I know there, but it's not as much of a "see and be seen" place as Bean & Leaf in Royal Oak. And not as nice inside, either. The couches are pretty beat, you kind of fall into them rather than sit in them. Plus, the wi-fi is a little unreliable. They may have fixed it, but when I used to go there a lot, I'd have to get up sometimes and say, "Um, I think your wi-fi is out," and they would always groan and say something along the lines of, "Well, I'll check..." Great place to pick up a coffee and bagel and grab the free papers, though. read more

There are a couple friendly baristas, but they have a couple cashiers that I always hope not to deal with when I come there. Pudgy girl with lopsided blonde hair has the most unpleasant personality, and behaves like a mute. There's another one that seems almost mentally disabled, weird wig. Expensive for the quality, service and vibe. The chai that I got was ok, but the service was not great. This is one of those places that has a, "I work at a coffee shop and I am better than you," vibe. The barista makes it seem as though you are inconveniencing her by ordering a drink. They drinks are all served in hot to-go cups, which might jot bother all, but really threw me off drinking an iced chai. if I am going to spend that much for a cup of coffee (1.80), I would rather go somewhere where the service is good like AJs or even Starbucks. read more

If you hadn't noticed, recently Java Hutt came under new leadership. The place is WAY cleaner, and generally has a more friendly and warm appeal than it has had in the past. If you wrote if off a while ago, it's probably time to pop in and give this place another chance. Subtle changes have gone a long way for this place. Owners are around working, and making your coffee almost every morning. Nothing says, "We are invested in our small business" more than being present. read more

This is not the best coffee joint in the world, but it's certainly not the worst. I only ever get a Mocha or Tea, and both are acceptable. The staff is friendly enough. The cookies are ok. The muffins look like Costco. I study here whenever I'm taking a class. There's a steady stream of locals, and some of them appear a little whacked in the head. They tend to hang out in the front and smoke in the summer. Don't hate it - don't love it. read more

I go here pretty regularly with another friend that works from home, and it's nice and quiet to work during the day. After about 6pm it usually starts getting louder with a lot of group meetings or get-togethers, but it's never been all that loud during the day. Usually just a few work-at-homers and students. I like all the staff, they're friendly and don't take long to make anything. Their iced coffee is my favorite, a large keeps me going all day. I've had quite a few baked goods to nibble on from here and I've liked them all. I've noticed a lot of people getting sandwiches, which look pretty good, so if I ever decide to try one I'll post an update. read more

I guess I can't complain! Java Hutt has coffee and they have it fast! I'm not a really big fan of their soy chai tea (it was a taste that I wasn't expecting) but overall it was very pleasant overall. They have not only soy milk, but almond milk too which is really nice. They also have vegan cookies. The people are always really nice who work there too. Have gone here a ton over the years and like others want to support a local business. But cannot anymore. Two e this week was in and the Internet, which I'm sorry you have to have hear days was spotty at best and unusable. So my purpose to do work was shot twice. Like everyone else, I want to love JavaHut. I mainly use coffee shops for studying, and if I don't feel like hiking over to Royal Oak, this is literally the only viable option. Ferndale is in some SERIOUS need for a nice chill coffee shop. JavaHut fulfills that sometimes. But other times, I have been extremely annoyed. It gets loud, and big groups gather up. One time, a group was celebrating a birthday there. in a coffee shop. Seriously? The atmosphere is completely hit or miss... I'd much rather go to Bean & Leaf to study. I've never had a problem with a coffee, but then again I'm not too picky about it. I love the wide mugs. The food is nothing special, and I'm pretty sure the soup is from a can. Whatever. The service needs help and/or social skills. I try to be friendly, but I usually end up feeling awkward....... read more

I Live not far from the JH and infrequently stop in for something hot .. usually the Raspberry tea which I am totally hooked on .... The Cashier/Servers can be a bit much at times but I think it's because most of them are really young and have a lot of responsibilities there (stock, cleaning, blah blah blah).. you remember how it was when you were young :) I would recommend it not only for the tea but for the comfortable leather couches read more

The prices are good and the coffee is fine.The owner however is showing signs of neglect with building maintenance.. Its a gem and Its slowly falling from grace. Wow. I am really impressed with not only the people that work there, but also the selection and quality of food and drink, and the music. The barista with the nose ring, glasses, and dreadlocks makes a great dirty chai every time I get one. I think she said her name is Nikita. Irrespective of that fact, I have been going there now for about three months, and I always have space to study, there are lots of electrical outlets, and the environment is rad. Please Red Hook, open up on Sunday, so that Java Hutt isn't the only Coffee House in Ferndale to go to. This afternoon's experience wasn't great, as I watched other customers having to have their coffee drinks made 2 and 3 times until it was correct. After my experience at Java Hut I decided that I would prefer it if corporate coffee places take over and put these little privately owned dumps out of business. Why??? Well... because the service was terrible. My friend and I waited in line while THE BARISTA TALKED WITH HER FRIEND FOR WAY TOO LONG. Then finally, my friend ordered, had her drink in her hand.... and the barista then talked to my friend for way too long... as I stood there without a drink, without my drink being ordered or in progress, and with no one talking to me. It went on long enough that I decided I am wasting my time, and I went outside to sit down. I got to the table outside and there was TRASH on it left from a previous customer, so I took it off the table and put in on the ground. My friend came out with her drink and sat with me, and I sat there drinkless. When she went back inside to use the wifi, and I stayed outside, that rude barista came outside and started moving furniture around and cleaning up.... THE BARISTA ACTUALLY ASKED ME TO PICK UP SOME TRASH OFF THE GROUND AND HAND IT TO HER. I said: "I don't work here." She said, "Well since you didn't buy anything, then you can leave." (The hole in her brain must be big enough that she forgot that I came there with someone who *did* buy something). I said to her: "I was going to buy something, but you spent too much time talking with my friend instead of serving me." THEN she said: "If you don't leave, I'm calling the police." ... Ridiculous. Call the police? Why? Because I'm not kissing your a$$? Seriously? The police don't care about that. And (P.S.) the police are not scary. I can accept, to some degree, bad service... but I can't accept that I , as the customer, must kiss the a$$ of the staff in order to get anything or be allowed to stay there. That is not a barista running that place-- it's a personality disorder. read more

My sisters and my mama stopped here after a charity event in downtown Ferndale. It was a scorcher, and we desperately needed to escape the heat. It seems like everyone else had the same idea, because 3-4 people followed us inside. This kind of sucked for the girl behind the counter, given that she went from 0 drink orders to ~7 drink orders in mere moments, but she handled it like a champ. Really, she was almost as sweet as the syrup pumped into the drinks. Only my French soda came out incorrectly (she made an Italian soda instead), but it was an easy fix (just add cream). The drink wasn't worth the calories, IMO, but it wouldn't stop me from trying Java Hutt again. The other drinks were fair. My mom's iced chai tea was the clear winner. The smoothie that was ordered by one of my sisters was too tart, and the frozen vanilla drink my other sister ordered was not as she expected (there was no coffee/espresso in it). I would stop here again to try out the coffee and espresso, but skip the frozen/fruity drink line-up. PS: They had a beautiful assortment of pastries and desserts, but the drinks were enough to satisfy our sweet tooth. read more

I'd have to say this place has definitely improved in the last couple of years. The music is no longer loud and annoying and the staff doesn't act like they're "too cool for school." As for the coffee...stay away from the brewed stuff and go for an espresso. I don't know why, but their house coffees have a burnt stale taste. I've been coming here for the last 5 years and it has yet to improve. I think the water temp might be set to high on their brewers.This is also a great place to tune out. It's pretty quiet as far as coffee places go. The crowd is little older than your other indie coffee houses which is great for someone over 30. read more

Java Hutt never fails. It's a great place to get work done, use the internet, and grab a bite to eat. It opens early and closes late. Food options are better than other competing coffee shops. Can't speak on the coffee since I don't drink much coffee period. For my needs not many coffee shops in the area can compete. read more

I started hanging out here a few months ago after moving to Ferndale. The coffee is really good (try the hot chocolate too!) and they have a good selection of teas. If you as for a for here cup you get a real mug which is cool. The staff is pretty cool and talkative and they seem skilled at barista-ing. A great cross section of Ferndale residents end up in here, and it can be pretty entertaining at times! :) Good for studying and just hangin' out. read more

I like Java Hutt. You can go there and relax for long periods. The food & drinks are pretty good. They could be a little cleaner, though.

Good study area- sometimes I take naps on the couches and they're cool with it.

Honestly this is a really awesome place. The staff is super friendly, the desserts are really yummy, and their coffee is not bad at all. I ordered a skim milk latte and then because I stayed for a while ordered a chai latte with soy milk and the gluten free coconut cookie! So yummy! The atmosphere is perfect for getting work done. Music isn't too loud, the AC isn't blasting, and although it gets pretty packed, quiet is always maintained. They also walk around and ask you to try their new pastries for free! Will definitely be coming back. read more
